Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 1 – Sunday

Jose Mourinho’s second stint at Stamford Bridge gets off to a successful start thanks to strikes from Oscar and Frank Lampard. Fernando Torres edges Romelu Lukaku to the Blues’ bench ahead of the midweek match with Villa, while a Roberto Soldado spot-kick is enough to earn Tottenham the points at Selhurst Park in Sunday’s early kick-off.

Lukaku Rotation Woe
As many of us were more than aware, Romelu Lukaku was Chelsea’s form player over the summer. The big Belgian was backed by huge numbers heading into the double Gameweek after racking up five goals and a pair of assists in pre-season – surely, we thought, he had earned the right to start at home to Hull as Jose Mourinho looked for a win in his first match back at the Bridge. Instead, Lukaku had to make do with a cameo off the bench as Fernando Torres got the nod as the lone forward, with a 15-minute run-out failing to come to fruition.

Given his form, it looks a certainty – barring injury – Lukaku will be named in the XI for Wednesday evening’s match but yesterday’s turn of events is already an indication of what we can come to expect as the year unfolds. Last season’s exploits at West Brom underlined his potential but Lukaku, even in his current form, clearly cannot provide us with a security of starts under Mourinho. His Fantasy owners now have the small issue of a trip to United followed by a blank Gameweek 3 and with his manager admitting post-match he could be primed to bid for Wayne Rooney once again, an exodus looks on the cards as we reluctantly turn elsewhere for more secure options for our three-man frontlines.

Jose Hints at Midfield Fatigue
Having seen his side completely dominate the first-half, the second period proved a little more frustrating for Mourinho. The Blues boss cited the midweek internationals as a reason why he felt his three attacking midfielders fell off the pace – a worry for owners of Oscar and Kevin De Bruyne ahead of the Villa match. Indeed, Eden Hazard’s owners may also be a little on edge for Wednesday’s game after the Belgian lasted the full 90 minutes. Mourinho moved to a 4-3-3 after replacing Oscar with Marco Van Ginkel on 85 minutes and it’s certainly a possibility that the same system could be utilised against Villa, with Juan Mata and Andre Schurrle offering fresh flank options for the front three.

“In the second half we had no physical energy or mental availability. The three boys behind Fernando in the first half were fantastic but in the second half they disappeared. All of them played national team matches [in midweek]. Kevin played 85 minutes against France, Oscar played 80 minutes against Switzerland and Eden played 70 minutes against France. When the creativity disappeared we lost the danger in our game. I tried to make a couple of changes but at that time the game was bad, we sat back but our defensive block was very comfortable. The second half wasn’t comparable to the first half but the first half was fantastic.”

Bruce Shifts Shape
The 3-5-2 formation utilised in the Championship last season looks to have been left behind after a summer of tactical tinkering at Hull. Steve Bruce continued with his new 4-3-3 formation yesterday – a move which has seen new roles for both last term’s wing-back duo Ahmed Elmohamady and Robbie Brady. The former, in particular, has suffered from this alteration; classified as a midfielder, he has been shifted to right-back by Bruce, though Brady – who was part of the central midfield three – did move to the left after the introduction of Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore. With forwards Yannick Sagbo and Sone Aluko handed the wing roles on either side of Danny Graham, Hull’s Fantasy options look to have lessened by this new approach; while Robert Koren remained the most advanced central midfielder in the shake-up, it remains to be seen what Bruce’s plans are with Huddlestone and Livermore in the first XI.

Soldado the New Spurs Hero
Regardless of reputation, there’s always the fear that most new arrivals need time to adjust to the Premier League. The breakneck speed and physicality of the English top-flight can sometimes bypass the best of them initially but, despite his manager revealing he lacks match sharpness, Tottenham’s new number nine still opened his goals account for the season yesterday. Roberto Soldado not only delivered the visitors’ match-winner with a calmly-converted spot-kick, he also grabbed the maximum bonus points in the 1-0 Selhurst Park win.

As Gareth Bale edges towards the exit door, the former Valencia man will surely begin to rise in ownership as Spurs prepare for a superb run of games that sees them entertain Swansea, Norwich, West Ham and Fulham in the next eight Gameweeks, in addition to trips to Hull and Villa. In the unlikely event the Welshman stays put, he will still remain the main Spurs asset but if, as expected, he moves to Madrid, Soldado, at 9.5, looks a real armband contender over that upcoming schedule. Bale already looks unlikely to make next weekend’s game with Swansea after Villas-Boas admitted post-match he is still nursing a foot injury.

Dawson a Mid-Price Option
The return of Jan Vertonghen boosted the Tottenham backline and delivered an instant clean sheet at Selhurst Park. While the Belgian also picked up a couple of bonus points for his all-round exploits, Michael Dawson went quietly about his business and earned his owners a six-point return. Heading into the season, it appeared Vertonghen would miss out with an ankle problem, allowing Dawson and Younes Kaboul game time – yesterday’s selection suggest the Frenchman is still behind in the pecking order as he builds up his fitness after long-term injury. At 5.0, Dawson looks a decent defensive option in light of the above-mentioned schedule and with left-back Danny Rose classified as a midfielder in FPL, the centre-half currently represents the only mid-price route into Villas-Boas’ backline.

Palace Fitness Issues Ease
Ian Holloway rued his lack of starting options after the home defeat. The Palace boss fielded Aaron Wilbraham through the middle with summer signings Dwight Gayle and Stephen Dobbie on the flanks in a 4-5-1, but the hosts only improved after Kevin Phillips, Marouane Chamakh and Jonny Williams were brought on during the second-half. Holloway explained the reason behind the latter duo’s omission from the starting XI and suggested they, along with another new recruit, will be in contention for next weekend’s trip to Stoke as he looks to freshen up his options for The Britannia:

“Jonny Williams played on Wednesday night, a full 90 minutes and with his history you’ve got to be really careful. Chamakh should be able to train next week, Campana will have another week – he was out for two weeks – so we should be in a much better scenario for next week.”

Not going near the Coleman bandwagon personally... Think Everton will be a lot more unreliable for actual defensive returns under Martinez and he's not going to be assisting/scoring regularly to be getting regular attacking returns.

United's bid of £28m for Fellaini and Baines is frankly rude.

When he was Everton manager he said they'd never accept bids of less then £15m for Baines and Fellaini was around £25m.

Torres was ineffective. Mourinho wanted to give him a chance & build his confidence with a goal, but it didn't happen.
I am beginning to think however that at Chelsea, whoever plays the forward role their job is just to hold the ball up & bring the midfield into the game, not get 25 goals per season

A better player would probably end up scoring 20+ in that team regardless. Though I suppose it depends whether the team are allowed off the leash or if they're going to be as negative as they were yesterday in the second half.

They think it partly because they own him. Just like you don't because you don't.

      But also:
There is little to go on apart from pre-season form and he was playing well. He came on for Torres and was much more industrious. Torres blanked against one of the assumed worst defences in the premiership this season at home.

I imagine Ba and Lukaku will both get time against Villa. With the most prolific/hardworking being given the majority of time against Utd next week.

Why are you so biased against him? (I don't expect an actual answer)

It's worse in the sense that it's rewarding far too many players who nobody objective would ever put among the top 3 performances in a game, while completely overlooking the players who did put in the best performances.

If the bonus points system is intended to reward the best performances, then it is entirely unfit for purpose.

Even though I still don't think defenders actually will end up benefitting that greatly from it (they will get a lot of 1 baps, but not 2 or 3 very often), the system will still continue to fail to reward the best performances because it's a poorly designed system. Over the season things will even out, but on a game by game basis they will continue to seem ridiculous.

Will anyone do some analysis on the Bonus Points returns and how they were delivered (i.e. we can see the number of passes completed = points scored etc?)

I looked at the Bonus Points System scores; scored by each player that played > 90 mins
        the averages are as follows:
        GK - avg 5.3 BPs - Modal Group - 7 pts
        DF - avg 4.9 BPs - Modal Group - 6 pts
MF- avg 3.3 BPs - Modal Group - 4 pts
FW- avg 5.4 BPs - Modal Group - 2 pts

So in short that tells me that the most consistent groups of players to pick up the BPs look like they would be defenders / GKs as they have high averages and a good chance of hitting that level as well as Modal is high.

Whilst MFs, are the worst average and a low Modal -
        FWs are the most erratic.

Whats also interesting is that the defenders scored so highlight despite only 3 goals coming from Defenders & 3 assists (compared to MF 6 goals & 9 assists).

What I am keen to know is what stats the Defenders are picking up the points on ...

        cheers

I still think it's too difficult for players on the losing team to get boners. Like Begovic in Liverpool-Stoke, he was clearly one of the 3 best players for me, but I don't really have a huge problem with many of the allocations. It's a little too early for me to start basing transfers off it.

I love it because Soldado and Oscar got 3 each, but hate it because Sturridge didn't get any.

In all seriousness though, it seems quite good so far - but it won't influence my transfers just yet, until there's a bit more to go on.

Good when Giroud gets his baps, bad when Ivanovic is the only Chelsea defender that doesn't. Also good when Soldado gets 3, and Studge/Lambert/Kasami get the same amount, combined. So, basically, good! I guess... my opinion changes after every game 😀

I still think there should only be 6 bonus points awarded per game - one 3, one 2 and one 1.
There should be additional stats in order to separate those who would otherwise share the same bonus points. Or the existing stats could be refined - e.g. if two players have exactly the same set of stats except that one has 81% pass completion and the other has 82%, then the one with 82% gets a better bonus than the other.

Last season there were too many cases of multiple awards in the most boring games where there were no outstanding performances. This season is even worse from that aspect, since the points are being shared around even more while other good performances are being overlooked, but at least defenders and goalkeepers are being rewarded better than previously.

Players who make lots of easy safe passes are being rewarded, but those who take risks may find that their rewards for making key passes might not compensate for their lower pass completion rates.

However, we have to play the system as it is, which probably means going for more goal-scorers and safe defenders but fewer creative players. However, we must not forget that BPs are not everything, they are only one component of a player's overall score.

There are at least 3 ways in which equal bonus points could be separated:
        1. Assign an order of priority to the criteria used to calculate the BPS.
        2. Refine the criteria, as suggested above.
        3. Add additional criteria.

There are of course also many other criteria that could be refined. e.g. 5 saves are better than 4, and a miss that hits the bar or the post is less bad than one that hits the corner flag.
The use of additional criteria would then probably not be necessary.

The system might not be bad for all creative players. Players who provide precision passes for assists might be OK, but wide players who put in lots of crosses, most of which are cleared by defenders but some of which provide goal-scoring opportunities, are more likely to suffer.

        Great point.

Put simply, if you have a game where most players are are 1, 2 or 3 for BPS, you will get lots of players getting bonus, whereas a game with lots of high scores is more likely to only have 6 points given out

How do we explain that Aguero got 3 bonus last night? Watching the live BPS score, he was on 10 behind others on 11+ as the game was finishing. Those players, Silva, Zaba, Lescott finished on 11, Toure on 12, and Aguero somehow leapt from 10 during the end of the game to 13 after the game. Does it factor in minutes played do we think? Cheers

If Chelsea can keep a CS against Benteke I'd suggest it would be wise to hold on to their defenders (if you can afford it). I'm giving serious consideration to keeping Terry at the moment.

So i know i am probably goign against the grain here but...
i bottled it Saturday morning and put RVP in my teamd, and whilst i ahve got off to a decent start it is purely down to getting lucky with Mignolet and Coleman picking up lots of points - rest of my team did little..... so am still thinking i would rather have an RVP'less team going forward but think it would be silly to change now i have him

Ok, pretty happy with my start. I have 3 potential transfers that I want to make but I'm not keen on an 8 point hit this early in the season. Anyone have any thoughts on which one(s) to do and why?

    Mignolet - (Boruc)
    Reid - Toure - Chester - Ramage - (Ivanovic)
    Hazard - Snodgrass - Mirallas - Coutinho - (Noble)
    Benteke - Lambert - (Lukaku)

Ivanovic > Coleman - can't see Chelsea keeping a clean sheet against Man U
Ramage > Shaw - want the Southampton West Ham partnership
Mirallas > Barkley - just makes sense on every level lol

Obviously I'd like to catch the price rises of all 3 so does that make the points hit more acceptable?

Ramage to Shaw looks a good transfer.

Colemans returns this week was a one timer. He's not going to do THIS well very often. Plus, if you're spending 5.0 on a defender, the least you'd want are cleanies which Everton hardly guarantee.

Barkley's a decent option for a 5th mid, but you've got Noble already.

There are some seriously disgruntled Arsenal fans out there.

I really hope they get some points quickly because I agree with the clubs core principles and think it's unfair that the fans have turned on their own club one game into the season.

On another day, Arsenal could have won that game; the second pen was not clear cut, the red was harsh, the third goal came because they'd thrown men forwards. And Villa are not a bad side, we'll give plenty of other top sides a game this season.

Wenger has done a miraculous job considering his net spend over the years and always remained in solidarity with the board. He is the best person for that job, especially one game into the season, with the window about to close - support him and shoulder the pressure if you love your club.

They run a sustainable model at AFC, have good footballing principles and a wonderful stadium to show for what Wenger has delivered. You should be grateful for the success' youve had and the team you can support.

When teams start twatting 50m on players it makes it very difficult for a team like Arsenal to invest knowing that they could only stand to make a significant loss. There are very few who are actually worth a 50m outlay and the wages that go with it.

General principle: If the player aint good enough, dont buy him. If he's too overpriced, don't buy him.
Also, If they ain't good enough, don't keep them!

Suarez at 40m shows they are trying to invest wisely but unless you have a sugar daddy who wants to piss cash away, this window is tough - the toughest i can remember. PSG, Monaco, Chelsea, City, the list is growing. These sides dictate who can afford what. When they load a Napoli with cash, the 'not quite world class' players that are good enough then become overpriced too. See Higuain and Carroll, for example.

Surely, you'd rather Arsene bought good players with the clubs long term interest at heart? Would you really prefer him to go dick out on a bid for someone, like Liverpool did with Carroll, just to appease the fans' loss of Torres?

Or would keeping Chamakh and Arshavin fire you to Champions League glory? Come on. I hear too much complaining about 'x players leavevs x players in'. You know well enough that it ain't about making up the numbers. Those players leaving is a positive, so don't make it a negative.

Who is available with champions league pedigree? And I mean AVAILABLE, not players you'd be held to ransom over (like Suarez, Rooney, Bale, etc).

Take it from a Villa fan, whose side was nearly crippled by speculative spending. If it ain't in your budget, it ain't worth dreaming of. We are still paying for overspending but the club has had a good restructuring under Lambert and while we might not be in for more than a cup run, I'm delighted to have a passionate, exciting team that i know will last.

Arsenal have the capacity to challenge for silverware every year, even without a marquee signing. A squad depleted with injuries, with young players, needs support - why not get behind the team, take some of that weight off their shoulders and let them get on with the football.

When your team starts pissing its future away by overspending on players, playing poor quality football, loosing its soul, then you're right to revolt. When your club is in safe hands and going through a turn of misfortune with injuries, they need your support.

... and before you get all 'big club' on me, Villa have a European Cup to their name. Fans expectations are high. We just understand the nature of the game when sugar daddies get involved.

We should have bought Luiz gustavo and Julio Cesar. But they're not good enough apparently.

      Szezney is a clown.
      Tthe defence always makes mistakes.

If we had bought early we could have challenged for the title, but it's too late now.

Szezney is young. He'll continue to improve.

Luis Gustavo was a missed opportunity, quality player. I agree on that one, but like Utd found with Thiago - these players are highly sought.

I thought the money previously went to the stadium?

And I'd find it surprising if they came out and said 'we have millions to spend' and then chose not to spend it. It would make more sense to either not say it or try to spend it, which i think they're doing.

yes, this is the point. Just because you have 70 million, does that mean you have to spend 70milion on players even if you cannot acquire the ones you believe are right?

It looks like they are trying to spend on the right players (suarez bid was pretty serious), they've just not managed to negotiate a deal.

Been fed lies, you actually still belive them. Wenger has lost the plot. It's all his and the boards fault for not forcing him to buy players.

Szezney is nowhere near good enough
              Sagna - sloppy
              Arteta is average
              Gibbs is lightweight
              Mertesacker gets done too much
Koscielny is always making big mistakes in big games.
Podolski wenger doens't seem to play him
              Wilshere is highly overrated

Could go on, but these players need to be pushed by new signings. They are all too comfortable .

Disagree with a few of those.

Isn't Hodgeson pinning our world cup hopes on Wilshire? He's excellent!
Arteta was superb at Everton, a good side. He's plenty good enough.
Mertesacker, was never a fan but i think he's performed well.
Koscielny, big fan. He reads the game brilliantly. Has made a few high profile mistakes.
Sagna, was brilliant a few years ago but i agree, he needs replacing.

I'm unbiased, well, slightly pro Arsenal because they've played good football over the years.

I think Arshavin turned to tosh, Sagna has now lost it, Chamakh was worth no more than free. I see poor players (IMO) at Arsenal, like i do at all the other sides, i just dont think all those you've mentioned fall into that category.

What a load of old tosh, especially the Higuain remark. There have been a plethora of great buys this season, right through the whole league. With the sale of Gervinho, Arsenal have £90m to spend. Don't give me all that "the aint anybody good enough" for the 'mighty' Arsenal. What ever happened to the fabled Wenger scouting system, now other clubs have mastered it, and Arsenal have to go after them, like Michu for example.
