The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Sunday

The Premier League’s bizarre shortage of goals continues as Sunday’s headline acts muster just two strikes between them. It saw both Olivier Giroud and Daniel Sturridge maintain their goal-a-game records, whilst at the Hawthorns, Swansea struck twice, leaving the Baggies without a goal in their three league outings.

The Game Changer

Giroud’s moment of quality proved the difference in a disjointed North London derby. A sublime flicked finish from a smart Theo Walcott centre was the Frenchman’s third goal in as many league games as he goes on establishing his top-flight reputation.

While we’re anticipating arrivals at the Emirates before the window slams shut, it’s fair to say that if a world class striker fails to saunter through the Emirates door, then Fantasy interest in the impressive Giroud will accelerate.

Currently priced at just 8.6 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Giroud is owned by over 13% of managers following an outstanding pre-season that saw him strike eight goals. He has taken that form into the season and is not only accepting his goalscoring opportunities with confidence, his all-round play as Arsenal’s centre-forward has undoubtedly improved. It remains to be seen if that’s enough to discourage the lesser-spotted Emirates chequebook from fluttering in the direction of the Arsenal attack.

The Underused

The fixture computer did few favours for Swansea’s Fantasy prospects over the opening two matches. A home clash with the champions and an away trip to Spurs returned just a single goal but, today at the Hawthorns, we saw Michael Laudrup’s side kick-start their season and remind us of the talent they have within the ranks.

Ben Davies was a member of our team of the season last term after a full campaign at left-back generated eight clean sheets, a goal and two assists for the initial value of just 4.0. Priced at 5.0 this time round, he’s been largely ignored but will end the Gameweek as the top scoring defender having cracked the opening goal in the 2-0 win over West Brom. Team-mate Pablo Hernandez failed to make the anticipated impact in his first season but promises improvement this time around. Goal and assist returns today will earn him a couple of bonus and see him rank as the top midfielder in the Gameweek; at just 6.0, the classy Spaniard – who has now played a part in all three of his side’s strikes this term – could yet be a prospect for those who cannot stretch funds to cover Michu.

With Liverpool and Arsenal at home in the next three, the tests keep coming for Laudrup’s men but today’s result reminded Fantasy mangers that we’ll need to monitor progress at the Liberty and be ready to pay attention once the schedule eases from Gameweek 8.

The Selection Poser

Kolo Toure’s absence from the Liverpool lineup through a groin injury was perhaps expected, although noises from Anfield prior to the match gave his Fantasy owners some hope that he’d be available. It wasn’t to be.

With the injury played down by Brendan Rodgers, Toure could easily be in contention following the international break. However, it appears he may be about to slip down the pecking order by then. According to reports and Rodgers himself, Liverpool have agreed fees for defenders Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori. The signing of Sakho from Paris Saint-Germain, looks particularly daunting for Toure owners. The 23-year-old is a French international and is said to have commanded a fee of somewhere in the region of £18 million. It seems unlikely that Liverpool have paid that kind of money to have him play second fiddle to Toure. Sakho can be deployed at left-back but with Aly Cissokho recently joining the club as back-up to Jose Enrique, long-term, it looks as though Toure’s position is under real threat. The former City man is currently owned by over 9% of Fantasy Premier League managers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

2 FT for QW4: What should i do? Keep RVP for the CRL game and strengthen midfield with one transfer (saving 2 for the frontline next gameweek) OR Strengthen forwards and get Sturridge+ 2 of Soldado,Giroud and benteke?

    Currently:
    Mignolet | Speroni
Lescott, Coleman, Terry | Mertesacker, Garrido
Koren, Lampard, Walcott, Downing | Snodgrass
    Sturridge, Anelka, RVP

Don't see this defender point surge keep up but it's enough to make me upgrade my defense a little during WC. Tinkering but may end on this:

    Mignolet (4.0)
    Coleman, Koscielny, Murner (Wilson, Chester)
Walcott, Michu, Nolan, Brady (Ward-Prowse or other 4.5m)
    RVP, Sturridge, Benteke

Looks somewhat similar to what I have (above). I went for it as I think RVP becomes deadly now that his fixtures are almost clear, plus I think there are some good budget out there that don't make his price that big.

Looks fine. Toure might be risky though and I think I'll be selling Silva for Michu myself.

Was thinking Coutinho > HBA and Dzeko > Sturridge.
Then later on Toure and Adrian to cheapies allowing me to upgrade Wanyama/Morisson. Downing is injured so I think Morisson will stake his claim.

Baines is far from essential and he's only a bit younger than Evra, who has stepped up his game in the past 2 seasons.

Fellaini is far from the player that we need. We need a deep-lying playmaker, not a midfield enforcer.

Ok in a mood after pushing the WC button and selling Penaldo, so ready for some free tips to you all lads.

    1. Statistically the defense is always weaker/ concedes more goals/ less CS's after an international break. Something like they breaking the partnership and way of playing. CB/ RB/ LB play on a different level and in a different system for there national teams. Lads going 5 at the back will be disappointed in GW 4. After that strong defense could be worth it, but speaking about GW 4 only.

    2. Law of averages. Sturridge and Giroud scored 3 times in a row. Giroud scored every first goal for Arsenal and Sturridge became the first player ever to score 3 times in 3 wins 1:0 in a row. That means odd are really against them to score in GW 4. Again they could be good signings afterwards but don't make them captains. Just saying. I think I am gonna bet on Sturridge not scoring if I find good odds.

Caring and sharing by the Special One :Pn

      3. You can make as many transfers as you want. They will show you that points will be spent, but later you can use the WC and point hits will be removed. I did it. I made 5 transfers yesterday on my phone and than today WC. Just to know it. If someone isn't sure make 2 transfers and if needed you can WC later.

I hope you're not a gambler, because you do not understand the law of averages.

The odds of them scoring in GW4 are not lower because they have scored in previous weeks, their scores will regress to the mean, but scoring three in a row does not mean the next game will be a blank.

Your first point could be right though

I know almost all about probability. Had several exams on it at faculty. If 10 times the coin fells on a tail the 11th time still the probability is 50% or 0.5 as you want. That is true. But, one large but, from a stat point of you I believe in underlying stats. That was the reason I benched Benteke last week. He had 3 goals from 4 shots on target. People were questioning me and telling names, but guess what he blanked. They surely gonna digress with time. That will happen with Sturridge and Giroud IMO. And speaking about gambling I think it was PPower,( but not that important which bookie) who after RVP brace against Swans, offered money back if Persie scores against Chelsea. They know what they are doing believe me. The house always wins 😉

So I stand correct about Giroud and Sturridge. Its more possible for me, them not to score in GW 4.

I never understood exponential smoothing at college.

Oh it is certainly very possible that they will blank this week, but what i'm saying is that you shouldn't judge it on whether they scored or not in the previous weeks.
Basing it on underlying stats from previous weeks is fine.

Plucking stats from nowhere though, lets say player X averages 1 shot on target a game, and converts goals at 50% rate from shots on target.

The chances of him scoring in 4 games in a row is therefore 0.5^4 = 6.25%

But if you know he's scored 3 in a row, the chances of him scoring in the next game is still 25%, as the past occurrences don't affect the future (in reality this isn't exactly true, but y'know)
Your approach does seem contrary to the majority on here who follow the mythical 'in-form' players, though thats not necessarily a bad thing

Personally I think Sturridge will blank vs the Swans, but Giroud may well score vs Sunderland, as they are pretty awful, and my feelings are mainly based on the opponents, rather than the strikers themselves.

Sturridge and Giroud certainly won't score in every game, but in future they will certainly score in anything up to ~50% of games

Giroud still to score outside of London. And one man affected a lot of my thinking on this topic. Chris Glover. You should read his blog and see what I mean.

I've followed his blog for a while, disappointed he hasn't posted much this season really.

Giroud also has to break his duck outside of London sometime, and this Sunderland side are certainly as good as it'll get for him

Which one is better? , not on WC

    A Dzeko to RVP (-4)
B Dzeko to Sturrudge (his price is about to rise)

If B, I probably will get RVP in GW6

usually wait to do transfers with international week delay, injuries, etc..

but feel Mirallas to Brady is pretty easy. No real international worry here.

the piss off is watch Mirallas do something home to Chelsea. The Blues look very tight at the back but I still think Mirallas is more than capable of one (no big point haul in this one).

Oh I see Lamela is available now. RVP to him in the future. That is the benefit of having rvp, making a change is easier. Also handily a midfielder. In his debut he waved his hand for the ball, took it down, delivered a meek shot. It at least showed confidence.
