James Wilson is Unitedโ€™s goal hero as Ryan Giggs makes eight alterations to the United XI in their final home match of the season. Robin Van Persie emerges from the bench to fire the Red Devilsโ€™ third, whilst Matty Fryatt ruined the hostsโ€™ clean sheet by notching for a much-changed Hull XI as Steve Bruce looks towards the FA Cup Final:

Giggs Bloods Youngsters
With only pride left to play for this season, and a new managerial reign potentially on the horizon, Ryan Giggs chose to showcase the talents of Unitedโ€™s academy last night. Whilst the likes of Juan Mata and Ashley Young found themselves consigned to the bench, teenagers Tom Lawrence and James Wilson both made their debuts in a United shirt, with the latter grabbing the headlines with two goals and a commanding display in the lone forward role. Adnan Januzaj was afforded his first start since a goalscoring performance against Newcastle back in Gameweek 33, and although he failed to pick up any attacking returns, the Belgian impressed throughout his 90-minute display and was heavily involved in the build-up to all three of his sideโ€™s goals, suggesting he may well keep his starting berth on Sunday.

Mata owners, meanwhile, now face the decision of whether to sell after last nightโ€™s no-show. In what has become one of the most disappointing double Gameweeks in memory so far, injuries and team selection leaving us filled with uncertainty and searching for alternatives as the final round of fixtures approaches. Ironically, David Moyes’ departure has lessened Mata’s Fantasy prospects – he’s started just one of Giggs’ three matches in charge, playing 96 minutes over that trio of fixtures.

Goalscoring Cameo for Van Persie
Whilst Wayne Rooney missed out once again for United with a groin complaint, Robin van Persie tasted action from the bench for the second successive game and rewarded the 1,200 managers to plump for his double Gameweek services with an 86th-minute goal and two bonus points. Although the Van Persie alternative has hardy proved pivotal across the Gameweek, those who took the ultimate gamble by investing in the Dutchman will be consoled by the fact that he outscored fellow heavy-hitter Sergio Aguero by eight points to five, and will hope to see him return to the starting line-up for Unitedโ€™s final game against Southampton on Sunday.

Whilst his owners will now likely hold after last nightโ€™s strike, Van Persie faces a tough task on Sunday at St Maryโ€™s. Given that Southampton have conceded a single goal in their last four matches, Rooney and Aguero owners are more likely to target Liverpool and City alternatives, with Daniel Sturridge and Edin Dzeko set for significant investment prior to their respective home clashes with Newcastle and West Ham.

Jones Exits Early as Vidic Waves Goodbye
As well as shuffling the pack further up the field, Giggs opted for a unconventional defensive line-up, with Patrice Evraโ€™s 11.4% ownership left disappointed by the full-backโ€™s omission from the squad and Phil Jones the only defender to survive from last Saturdayโ€™s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Sunderland. Jones, however, only lasted 21 minutes before leaving the field with a shoulder injury which could dent his World Cup hopes. Post-match, Giggs gave a tentative analysis of Jonesโ€™ condition:

“He knew straightaway he had done something. Usually when something like that happens it is not great. Hopefully he will be OK but it is too near [to the incident] to say.”

Owned by just 3% of FPL managers, Jonesโ€™ potential absence on Sunday will have minimal effect and will allow Giggs to freshen up the backline once again. If anything, last nightโ€™s teamsheet highlighted the fact that the Welshmanโ€™s next starting XI is likely to be equally unpredictable and with the rumours of Louis Van Gaalโ€™s installation growing stronger, investing in any United player at this point carries an unnecessary degree of risk. Many managers loaded up on their assets prior to the double but a mass exodus looks likely as we turn to more secure options for Sundayโ€™s finale.

Hull Strikers Blank Again
Having both notched in Gameweek 36, Hullโ€™s forward duo Shane Long and Nikica Jelavic harboured a fair amount of attention going into the double Gameweek, but the pair ultimately disappointed. With the former only afforded 45 minutes at Old Trafford, and the latter an unused sub despite neither being eligible for the upcoming FA Cup final, the strike partners failed to make up for their blanks against Aston Villa at the weekend. Both sit firmly in the differential bracket and with Sundayโ€™s opponents Everton conceding two or more goals three times in their last four fixtures, even a sub appearance could see Long or Jelavic get in amongst the points and give their owners that vital edge over their mini-league competitors. The only concern is that Bruce is now solely focussed on the Wembley clash with Arsenal and, as last nightโ€™s teamsheet showed, the Tigers boss may look to give his other forward options increased game time in preparation for the Gunners showdown.

All comes down to your captain I would think. You need about 14-8=18 points from Yaya to be safe imo.
TBH it's an impossible question, he might win/you might win.

Is the whole "template culture" of FFS growing?

Is this a case of good analysis pointing us all towards the best players, or has it been easier to predict this year, or is it like this every year?

Seems to be very little in the vein of true differentials for most of this season, even the best cheap players are well known by most on FFS.

Does it annoy you and do you see it continuing or can it change back to being totally all over the place and everyone having different teams..?

A question I've been thinking about Jonty (not with the Scoutcast in mind, just generally) - with the changes to the way bonus points are now awarded, is the old adage about 'never take a hit for a defender' still as relevant? It seems like you have more chance of them paying off nowadays if it's for a defender with a good chance of a clean sheet and bonus points...

Agreed. Yeah Evs, why did you 'decide' to drop in rank when it would surely be better to head upwards instead? In my opinion it was a poor move to score less points, why didn't you pick different players and whatnot?

Evs' rank started to drop about the time of the January Wildcard.

Does he think this was caused by:
        poor wildcard choices,
        mistakes after the January Wildcard,
        bad luck,
        an insufficiently high TV,
other players' wildcards enabling them to catch up and overtake,
        a combination of these,
        or some other reason?

Question for Mark: I've noticed you welcoming injuries to template players so that it could give you a chance to catch up but in my experience it is better if these template players keep fit but revert to mean form leaving differentials for those trying to make up ground as injuries to the template players just means the those with the template players pick the players the chasers have. Basically what is your rationale when you welcome injuries to top owned players when all it does is reduce the available options leading to even more template teams?

Why is our Fantasy Team of the Season still in 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 formation, when most of us probably prefer 3-4-3 most of the time?

It forces us to vote for an unnecessary 4th defender and to omit an excellent 3rd forward or 4th midfielder.

I think some people also forget, that there are players who specifically want to play in Europe, f.e. Van Der Vaart was quite angry when Spurs didn't play him in the EL.

For a lot of clubs its also the only chance they have to play in Europe as well.

Personally I prefered the Old system with the Champions league having actual Champions, the Cup Winners Cup dedicated to non-champion winners and the UEFA cup for the rest.

I massively preferred the old system. Gaining entrance to the CL was really special and only happened when you won the league. Where's the magic in qualifying every year (in some cases) and then playing the same teams all the time.

Yep, plus I think it should be renamed , as it isn't a Champions League anymore but rather a top 4 + less fortunate countries champions league.

It just looses the competitive edge in a way, and teams don't value or cherish it anymore, its more a source of revenue than something to aspire for , at least for most teams.

It also doesn't help the non-rich footballing countries, where in the past they had a chance to surprise and get far, now it is much tougher.

I really did like the CWC competition, still my favorite one til this day.

Absolutely, it is killing the competitive edge. Seeing teams like Red Star or Steaua win, now that is more magic.

Also loved the CWC. Winning a cup if not the league gave even the biggest teams the chance to win something that they haven't won before, like completing the set in some cases. Ajax were delighted to complete the set with the CWC

precisely, the set completion was very important for some teams and it also gave an incentive to domestic cups as well.

Now domestic clubs in most European leagues lost their spark , even in the EPL, its not like most teams are even trying to win them, they see it more as a nuisance.

It just seemed , that in the past you had to deserve one of the European competitions and now it's like yeah, lets finish top 4 and then we have revenue for another season covered.

pressures of the modern game. tbh i dont have a problem with more than just the champs in the CL. for me 1st & 2nd was prefect, like in 99' when utd won the CL they werent the champions of england, arsneal were. to me football is about entertainemt & i'm entertained more by having more top teams playing each other than less but it was when third & fourth place were included it got to much, particularly when they had tow groupd stages.

anway the format isnt the real issue, if there was less money involved in the CL the other cups would've remained prestigious & noone would be complaining about formats & what not.

I would not go back to the original system of knock out all the way as I like the new format. However, I do agree with you that it should only be champions who are allowed in but we all know that it won't happen because of all the big clubs wanting the money.

Saying that I was pleased when Platini changed the way of qualifying, now champions of smaller leagues can only play other champions, which means a larger number of champions are guaranteed to play in the group stages.

I don't believe this. United didn't try for it as they were in a title race. Spurs don't try as they want to break the top 4. Chelsea won it didnt they? These European teams have had less and less to play for in their home leagues over recent weeks so could focus on Europa. Without the winner getting CL football, it's very hard to justify trying imo to the detriment of the league form

I did say that some English ones don't take it seriously. Good on Chelsea for trying. Many others don't unfortunately. It should be an honour to be in any European competition, this is not the Intertoto or Anglo-Italian (although I loved being in that one!).

Tottenham not trying in a European competition because they want to roll the dice and try to get into another is ridiculous imo. They would have more chance of winning the EL, and perhaps then this 'big club' would have more than 2 domestic trophies in their cabinet from the past 25 years!

it's a sad reality, but the least we can do is just not agree with the concept that it's better to come 4th every year, get knocked out in the groups or last 16 of the CL but keep banking the money, is better.

Knowing your club has a healthy bank balance and happy shareholders doesn't excite fans, well it shouldn't anyway!

This is my team now, with Ramsey, Rooney, Aguero and Mata the ones not sure to start as far as I know

I agree with this. Despite not having a grav I've been using this site for a few seasons now and this season has been my worst despite using it more than ever. I think it's been largely due to a smaller number of consistently high scoring players (and because of this the smaller number if players being selected as scout picks) and the lack of predictability of captains outside of Suarez. Also the fact that this site is bloody popular now and so everyone follows it's recommendations so it's hard to catch up if you get caught behind. Still of course my fault as I make the decisions but I have found in my mini league those have tried to push the boat out have been punished while those who have played safe have done much better.. There's also been a lot more injuries/freak cancellations (the man city Everton game being off due to strong wind comes to mind) and of course this week to contend with. Sorry this turned into an essay..

For eg Being impatient and shuffling through players costed my dearly in mid -season when I was being stubborn (told myself won't buy him) in not buying Yaya & was looking for differentials which work. Not focusing enough on getting my defense right except having Coleman. Being too punty with captaincy when Suarez was killing off other teams

Not sure if anyone would consider this as my first year but just got curious about FPL for the last 3 years and would say just a casual back then. This is my 1st year that I found FFS and was determined to win ML when the season started. Currently on top 10k and never did I imagine to reach heights like this. May not do it again but to determined to do better. ๐Ÿ™‚
(P.S: Hopefully I'll have spare cash for a membership next season to just check it out.)

I finished somehwere around 450k first season. Didnt know much abot fantasy football or football in general at that point. J think the important thing is to learn and improve on however you did for the next year. As I tried to do

In my first season I got about 130k + in the world which I felt respectable. This being my second season I've tried to build on it. Currently failing though. Not jumping on several bandwagons early. However with my auto subs and 5 players left today I hope to get inside the top 100k finally. In gw 37.

Got top 51k in my first season. With a dead ship in the last couple of weeks ๐Ÿ˜†

Horrible season this time round, currently in the top 200k. But, left the team alone for about a month, ( which is what I'm blaming it on ๐Ÿ˜† )

first season i'd just be happy to do well in your main or favourite mini league, regardless of what rank that involves. then take everything you learn about that first season into the second season, maybe top 50k, or simply to beat the first season.
thinking back i dont think i ever took notice of rank until coming on this site, and the second i did it was quite intimidating on here as 9 out of 10 links you'd click on were much better ranks

I was all over the place in my first season and really didn't know what I was doing - only a big finish brought my overall rank up to 261k.

I discovered FFS just after the end of that season and, after finishing 5k in the Fantasy World Cup and 3,852nd in my 2nd FPL season, I thought that I had cracked it and that I was bound to finish in the top 1k next time. But it didn't happen and after two disappointing seasons I am only now back in the top 4k.

Despite what you might imagine from reading some of the posts here, very few of us finish in the top 10k every season. Most of us have good seasons and bad ones, and even players who have finished in the top 100 in one season might finish outside the top 100k in another. So just do your best and try to improve, but don't give up if you start with a disappointing OR in your first season - and don't assume that if you get a good OR in your first season that it will be easy to repeat it next time either.

This seems about right, and is a balanced view.

I've moved from about 200k in my first season to around 2k now. I took it serious from around the end of last season, and have had a great run (a tad lucky at times) towards the end of this season to drag me up from 1.3M after week 11.

I tried just as hard in weeks 1-10 as since, but sometimes things don't go your way.

Last season i joined in gameweek 2 and stopped/start many times last season, going through the entire first half almost without making any changes/transfers.

Perhaps with that bit of second half of last season's experience, I am currently ranked just outside 10k in my first "real" full season, (dropped from 8k after a terrible dgw).

Hopefully i can get some shrewd signing to get me to finish inside the top 10k ๐Ÿ™‚

Wait until you know all their status on Friday.

When deciding who to get rid off you want to make sure that their replacement is definitely playing and that they have 4+ points per game over the season or at least over the last 4 GWs and that they have a decent fixture. Doing this will minimise your risk of making the wrong choice.

While I accept that our defence blew it for us. Or at least blew our chance at it I kinda can't let the fact Suarez sarcastically clapped them on the pitch go. Sure, in the team everyone has a job but AS a team you take it together. Say what you want to them in the dressing room but don't berate your teammates for all and sundry to see. It's really grating on me tbh.

I didn't see this Damo, that doesn't sound good ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

I think that the defence is going to get a lot of bad media, some of it deserved certainly but tactically the way they set out to play leaves them wide open to a strong counter attack. So tactically speaking I couldn't say it is just the defenders that should shoulder the blame.

You have a link for Suarez clapping?

Ok, after this disastrous DGW, I'm 30pts off leader in ML, so need the ultimate differential players from his team to mine and don't mind hits, so thinking
Mata/Evra/Rooney/Ramsey > Terry/Hazard/Gerrard /Lukaku(c) for -12 I'll keep faith with Aguero and have Yaya. Anyone I'm missing who could get me close?

Could not going for it become the new going for it?

Let me explain season has one week left so either for fun or make up ground players may take big hits and go outside the box with captaincy or player selection.

Surely ground can be made captaining Suarez when those who punt don't?

      Suarez (C) definitely.
Liverpool will put everything in that game hoping City will fail.
      I'm bringing Sturridge as well

He needs to outscore the players punted on. No guarantees. Suarez is the safe play for sure though.

Instread of letting Wilson try to get his third goal, Giggs subbed himself on and made some kind of a Giggs testamonial game out of it. That was maybe the most pathetic thing I have ever seen on a football pitch.

      RVP came on for Wilson.
Fergie brought Scholes on in the CL final as a farewell, Giggs is more than entitled to bring himself on in his final home game of his career in a nothing match for Lawrence(who wasn't all that on the night)

Hi guys! I'm off on holiday tomorrow (won't have time to look before the deadline) and I've already done Ramsey, Aguero, Rooney to Yaya Toure, Sturridge, Dzeko for minus eight. Somehow got 3.6 left ITB - is anything here worth the extra hit? Thanks!
