Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 37 – Tuesday

James Wilson is United’s goal hero as Ryan Giggs makes eight alterations to the United XI in their final home match of the season. Robin Van Persie emerges from the bench to fire the Red Devils’ third, whilst Matty Fryatt ruined the hosts’ clean sheet by notching for a much-changed Hull XI as Steve Bruce looks towards the FA Cup Final:

Giggs Bloods Youngsters
With only pride left to play for this season, and a new managerial reign potentially on the horizon, Ryan Giggs chose to showcase the talents of United’s academy last night. Whilst the likes of Juan Mata and Ashley Young found themselves consigned to the bench, teenagers Tom Lawrence and James Wilson both made their debuts in a United shirt, with the latter grabbing the headlines with two goals and a commanding display in the lone forward role. Adnan Januzaj was afforded his first start since a goalscoring performance against Newcastle back in Gameweek 33, and although he failed to pick up any attacking returns, the Belgian impressed throughout his 90-minute display and was heavily involved in the build-up to all three of his side’s goals, suggesting he may well keep his starting berth on Sunday.

Mata owners, meanwhile, now face the decision of whether to sell after last night’s no-show. In what has become one of the most disappointing double Gameweeks in memory so far, injuries and team selection leaving us filled with uncertainty and searching for alternatives as the final round of fixtures approaches. Ironically, David Moyes’ departure has lessened Mata’s Fantasy prospects – he’s started just one of Giggs’ three matches in charge, playing 96 minutes over that trio of fixtures.

Goalscoring Cameo for Van Persie
Whilst Wayne Rooney missed out once again for United with a groin complaint, Robin van Persie tasted action from the bench for the second successive game and rewarded the 1,200 managers to plump for his double Gameweek services with an 86th-minute goal and two bonus points. Although the Van Persie alternative has hardy proved pivotal across the Gameweek, those who took the ultimate gamble by investing in the Dutchman will be consoled by the fact that he outscored fellow heavy-hitter Sergio Aguero by eight points to five, and will hope to see him return to the starting line-up for United’s final game against Southampton on Sunday.

Whilst his owners will now likely hold after last night’s strike, Van Persie faces a tough task on Sunday at St Mary’s. Given that Southampton have conceded a single goal in their last four matches, Rooney and Aguero owners are more likely to target Liverpool and City alternatives, with Daniel Sturridge and Edin Dzeko set for significant investment prior to their respective home clashes with Newcastle and West Ham.

Jones Exits Early as Vidic Waves Goodbye
As well as shuffling the pack further up the field, Giggs opted for a unconventional defensive line-up, with Patrice Evra’s 11.4% ownership left disappointed by the full-back’s omission from the squad and Phil Jones the only defender to survive from last Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Sunderland. Jones, however, only lasted 21 minutes before leaving the field with a shoulder injury which could dent his World Cup hopes. Post-match, Giggs gave a tentative analysis of Jones’ condition:

“He knew straightaway he had done something. Usually when something like that happens it is not great. Hopefully he will be OK but it is too near [to the incident] to say.”

Owned by just 3% of FPL managers, Jones’ potential absence on Sunday will have minimal effect and will allow Giggs to freshen up the backline once again. If anything, last night’s teamsheet highlighted the fact that the Welshman’s next starting XI is likely to be equally unpredictable and with the rumours of Louis Van Gaal’s installation growing stronger, investing in any United player at this point carries an unnecessary degree of risk. Many managers loaded up on their assets prior to the double but a mass exodus looks likely as we turn to more secure options for Sunday’s finale.

Hull Strikers Blank Again
Having both notched in Gameweek 36, Hull’s forward duo Shane Long and Nikica Jelavic harboured a fair amount of attention going into the double Gameweek, but the pair ultimately disappointed. With the former only afforded 45 minutes at Old Trafford, and the latter an unused sub despite neither being eligible for the upcoming FA Cup final, the strike partners failed to make up for their blanks against Aston Villa at the weekend. Both sit firmly in the differential bracket and with Sunday’s opponents Everton conceding two or more goals three times in their last four fixtures, even a sub appearance could see Long or Jelavic get in amongst the points and give their owners that vital edge over their mini-league competitors. The only concern is that Bruce is now solely focussed on the Wembley clash with Arsenal and, as last night’s teamsheet showed, the Tigers boss may look to give his other forward options increased game time in preparation for the Gunners showdown.

It's been bad, I had a worse one last year, hard though it is to believe. I need to listen to myself more and the general pressure to get certain players less.

All comes down to your captain I would think. You need about 14-8=18 points from Yaya to be safe imo.
TBH it's an impossible question, he might win/you might win.

Is the whole "template culture" of FFS growing?

Is this a case of good analysis pointing us all towards the best players, or has it been easier to predict this year, or is it like this every year?

Seems to be very little in the vein of true differentials for most of this season, even the best cheap players are well known by most on FFS.

Does it annoy you and do you see it continuing or can it change back to being totally all over the place and everyone having different teams..?

A question I've been thinking about Jonty (not with the Scoutcast in mind, just generally) - with the changes to the way bonus points are now awarded, is the old adage about 'never take a hit for a defender' still as relevant? It seems like you have more chance of them paying off nowadays if it's for a defender with a good chance of a clean sheet and bonus points...

Go for broke or hold what you have?

As the season draws to a close many players have their eyes on a multitude of mini-leagues with various prizes.

If your still in with a shout you go for it I'm I right?

But at the detriment of securing cash?

              A question for Evs

After GW19 you were near the 1K mark. Why didn't you consolidate your rank since then as another top 100 rank was calling?

Agreed. Yeah Evs, why did you 'decide' to drop in rank when it would surely be better to head upwards instead? In my opinion it was a poor move to score less points, why didn't you pick different players and whatnot?

Evs' rank started to drop about the time of the January Wildcard.

Does he think this was caused by:
                poor wildcard choices,
                mistakes after the January Wildcard,
                bad luck,
                an insufficiently high TV,
other players' wildcards enabling them to catch up and overtake,
                a combination of these,
                or some other reason?

Question for Mark: I've noticed you welcoming injuries to template players so that it could give you a chance to catch up but in my experience it is better if these template players keep fit but revert to mean form leaving differentials for those trying to make up ground as injuries to the template players just means the those with the template players pick the players the chasers have. Basically what is your rationale when you welcome injuries to top owned players when all it does is reduce the available options leading to even more template teams?

Name the Man Utd team for the weekend!?

Top captain pick this week if you are trying to catch a ML leader?

                Biggest lesson from the season?

How much would you have to bet for you to prefer to win the bet, rather than for your team to win!?

              For everyone:

Obviously depending on prices and fixtures, could you see yourself starting next season playing 4 defenders as opposed to the traditional 3-4-3?

Why is our Fantasy Team of the Season still in 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 formation, when most of us probably prefer 3-4-3 most of the time?

It forces us to vote for an unnecessary 4th defender and to omit an excellent 3rd forward or 4th midfielder.

Repost of a defence of the Europa League from the last article:

The EL quarters had Juvenus, Benfica, Sevilla & Valencia. 2 giants of the European game and another with 2 recent(ish) CL finals to their name.

Most clubs take it seriously. More fool the English ones that don't

I think some people also forget, that there are players who specifically want to play in Europe, f.e. Van Der Vaart was quite angry when Spurs didn't play him in the EL.

For a lot of clubs its also the only chance they have to play in Europe as well.

Personally I prefered the Old system with the Champions league having actual Champions, the Cup Winners Cup dedicated to non-champion winners and the UEFA cup for the rest.

I massively preferred the old system. Gaining entrance to the CL was really special and only happened when you won the league. Where's the magic in qualifying every year (in some cases) and then playing the same teams all the time.

Yep, plus I think it should be renamed , as it isn't a Champions League anymore but rather a top 4 + less fortunate countries champions league.

It just looses the competitive edge in a way, and teams don't value or cherish it anymore, its more a source of revenue than something to aspire for , at least for most teams.

It also doesn't help the non-rich footballing countries, where in the past they had a chance to surprise and get far, now it is much tougher.

I really did like the CWC competition, still my favorite one til this day.

Absolutely, it is killing the competitive edge. Seeing teams like Red Star or Steaua win, now that is more magic.

Also loved the CWC. Winning a cup if not the league gave even the biggest teams the chance to win something that they haven't won before, like completing the set in some cases. Ajax were delighted to complete the set with the CWC

precisely, the set completion was very important for some teams and it also gave an incentive to domestic cups as well.

Now domestic clubs in most European leagues lost their spark , even in the EPL, its not like most teams are even trying to win them, they see it more as a nuisance.

It just seemed , that in the past you had to deserve one of the European competitions and now it's like yeah, lets finish top 4 and then we have revenue for another season covered.

pressures of the modern game. tbh i dont have a problem with more than just the champs in the CL. for me 1st & 2nd was prefect, like in 99' when utd won the CL they werent the champions of england, arsneal were. to me football is about entertainemt & i'm entertained more by having more top teams playing each other than less but it was when third & fourth place were included it got to much, particularly when they had tow groupd stages.

anway the format isnt the real issue, if there was less money involved in the CL the other cups would've remained prestigious & noone would be complaining about formats & what not.

I would not go back to the original system of knock out all the way as I like the new format. However, I do agree with you that it should only be champions who are allowed in but we all know that it won't happen because of all the big clubs wanting the money.

Saying that I was pleased when Platini changed the way of qualifying, now champions of smaller leagues can only play other champions, which means a larger number of champions are guaranteed to play in the group stages.

I don't believe this. United didn't try for it as they were in a title race. Spurs don't try as they want to break the top 4. Chelsea won it didnt they? These European teams have had less and less to play for in their home leagues over recent weeks so could focus on Europa. Without the winner getting CL football, it's very hard to justify trying imo to the detriment of the league form

I did say that some English ones don't take it seriously. Good on Chelsea for trying. Many others don't unfortunately. It should be an honour to be in any European competition, this is not the Intertoto or Anglo-Italian (although I loved being in that one!).

Tottenham not trying in a European competition because they want to roll the dice and try to get into another is ridiculous imo. They would have more chance of winning the EL, and perhaps then this 'big club' would have more than 2 domestic trophies in their cabinet from the past 25 years!

Well, maybe I'm cynical but imo there's going to be far less in football about honour/glory and more and more about money. CL is the true money maker

it's a sad reality, but the least we can do is just not agree with the concept that it's better to come 4th every year, get knocked out in the groups or last 16 of the CL but keep banking the money, is better.

Knowing your club has a healthy bank balance and happy shareholders doesn't excite fans, well it shouldn't anyway!

Oh yeah, trophies and cup runs would certainly be preferable for fans, I'm just saying why I think the clubs don't try. They are businesses and the owners only care about the bottom line

Would Ramsey->Eriksen and Rooney-> Sturridge for -4 give me a relative safe starting 11 for last gw? Or should I also swap out Mata for Schurrle or Barkley or something?

It's not tougher than normal, but it's unforgiving, like if you missed out on Coleman, Ramsey, Yaya etc and the big players who kept their form, then you were severely punished for it.

I had my bad season last year but still managed under 50K.
Guess having a 1st season under 2K which was partly a dead team until WCing around Xmas makes me see it differently.

I'd say his Yaya / Ramsey replacements scored decent points maybe differentials even , whereas mine didn't.

This is my first full season of using ffs, and I'm 2k.
Irish and Aaron Ramsey are the two current users that seem to follow a mould of appearing for a few months, posting lots and advocating hits unlikely to be effective and then disappearing again.

If playing just for fun top 100k, if for rank top 10k.

I agree with this. Despite not having a grav I've been using this site for a few seasons now and this season has been my worst despite using it more than ever. I think it's been largely due to a smaller number of consistently high scoring players (and because of this the smaller number if players being selected as scout picks) and the lack of predictability of captains outside of Suarez. Also the fact that this site is bloody popular now and so everyone follows it's recommendations so it's hard to catch up if you get caught behind. Still of course my fault as I make the decisions but I have found in my mini league those have tried to push the boat out have been punished while those who have played safe have done much better.. There's also been a lot more injuries/freak cancellations (the man city Everton game being off due to strong wind comes to mind) and of course this week to contend with. Sorry this turned into an essay..

I don't think he is , I fin 1.5k last season peppered under 1k for last few Gws ,
                      I'm currently 177k but I blame myself totally ,
                      - Not playing Wc early enough
                      - Ramsey
                      - Yaya
I think around 100k is a good first season if serious.

I came 828,630 in my first season because I made something over 100 transfers I think.. Just learn from your mistakes, try to take less hits next season, and pay attention to this site 🙂

This is my first season and I did not start until GW3 and am currently at 29K (will be higher after tonight and my bench points are added) but I think I have a case of beginners luck.

My luck has been mixed this week but mostly bad.

                        Aguero, Rooney & Ramsey injured

                        Mata and Evra benched

The only piece of luck I got was captaining Yaya (assuming he plays tonight) and getting Barkley off the bench.

I started last year, finished around 108K and was quite satisfied about it.

Although found this place around the start of my first season and learned some stuff as I went along. However, right now at about 10K (will improve after tonight's game & bench points) and I am not happy at all

Maybe yes but I can clearly see where I went wrong

For eg Being impatient and shuffling through players costed my dearly in mid -season when I was being stubborn (told myself won't buy him) in not buying Yaya & was looking for differentials which work. Not focusing enough on getting my defense right except having Coleman. Being too punty with captaincy when Suarez was killing off other teams

Also Lukkaaaa captain...Never ever ever again

I managed 1,355th in my first season. Discovering this site about half way through certainly helped :-).

I would say I was definitely more of an FPL fan than footy fan, so plenty of analysis rather than actually watching the games helps me.

My first year was last year but I never cared about Overall rank and just did whatever the hell I wanted because I had sewn up my mini league very incredibly early on, finished around 200kish. This year I made an effort to not mess about and get as high as possible and I'm 7K. My aim for next year is to just get higher than last, we'll see if this season was just a fluke 😛

Using this site early in the season helps but I think many veterans over here feel that this season belongs the Season of the Casuals (correct me if I'm wrong). So maybe that helps newbies like us 🙂

I don't agree about this casual thing. You have to be able to adapt your strategy based on the type of season, but it isn't massively different from other season imo. I think it is an excuse to an extent.

Not sure if anyone would consider this as my first year but just got curious about FPL for the last 3 years and would say just a casual back then. This is my 1st year that I found FFS and was determined to win ML when the season started. Currently on top 10k and never did I imagine to reach heights like this. May not do it again but to determined to do better. 🙂

In my first season I got about 130k + in the world which I felt respectable. This being my second season I've tried to build on it. Currently failing though. Not jumping on several bandwagons early. However with my auto subs and 5 players left today I hope to get inside the top 100k finally. In gw 37.

first season i'd just be happy to do well in your main or favourite mini league, regardless of what rank that involves. then take everything you learn about that first season into the second season, maybe top 50k, or simply to beat the first season.
thinking back i dont think i ever took notice of rank until coming on this site, and the second i did it was quite intimidating on here as 9 out of 10 links you'd click on were much better ranks

I was all over the place in my first season and really didn't know what I was doing - only a big finish brought my overall rank up to 261k.

I discovered FFS just after the end of that season and, after finishing 5k in the Fantasy World Cup and 3,852nd in my 2nd FPL season, I thought that I had cracked it and that I was bound to finish in the top 1k next time. But it didn't happen and after two disappointing seasons I am only now back in the top 4k.

Despite what you might imagine from reading some of the posts here, very few of us finish in the top 10k every season. Most of us have good seasons and bad ones, and even players who have finished in the top 100 in one season might finish outside the top 100k in another. So just do your best and try to improve, but don't give up if you start with a disappointing OR in your first season - and don't assume that if you get a good OR in your first season that it will be easy to repeat it next time either.

This seems about right, and is a balanced view.

I've moved from about 200k in my first season to around 2k now. I took it serious from around the end of last season, and have had a great run (a tad lucky at times) towards the end of this season to drag me up from 1.3M after week 11.

I tried just as hard in weeks 1-10 as since, but sometimes things don't go your way.

I seem to remember you promising to win it this year.

Top thousand in your first year is still an excellent start though.

Last season i joined in gameweek 2 and stopped/start many times last season, going through the entire first half almost without making any changes/transfers.

Perhaps with that bit of second half of last season's experience, I am currently ranked just outside 10k in my first "real" full season, (dropped from 8k after a terrible dgw).

Hopefully i can get some shrewd signing to get me to finish inside the top 10k 🙂

Just noticed that I will climb to second overall rank for players who started in GW3, assuming Nasri scores more than Silva tonight. 😀

In addition if Nasri and Yaya score high then I have an outside chance of catching person in 1st spot on the last day of the season. 😀

and it's funny how much that is overlooked. People are quick to call many players d*cks (e.g. terry) but he doesn't seem to get nearly as much flak for that as he deserves. Truly despicable.

Wait until you know all their status on Friday.

When deciding who to get rid off you want to make sure that their replacement is definitely playing and that they have 4+ points per game over the season or at least over the last 4 GWs and that they have a decent fixture. Doing this will minimise your risk of making the wrong choice.

While I accept that our defence blew it for us. Or at least blew our chance at it I kinda can't let the fact Suarez sarcastically clapped them on the pitch go. Sure, in the team everyone has a job but AS a team you take it together. Say what you want to them in the dressing room but don't berate your teammates for all and sundry to see. It's really grating on me tbh.

I didn't see this Damo, that doesn't sound good 😯

I think that the defence is going to get a lot of bad media, some of it deserved certainly but tactically the way they set out to play leaves them wide open to a strong counter attack. So tactically speaking I couldn't say it is just the defenders that should shoulder the blame.

You have a link for Suarez clapping?

Ok, after this disastrous DGW, I'm 30pts off leader in ML, so need the ultimate differential players from his team to mine and don't mind hits, so thinking
Mata/Evra/Rooney/Ramsey > Terry/Hazard/Gerrard /Lukaku(c) for -12 I'll keep faith with Aguero and have Yaya. Anyone I'm missing who could get me close?

But Evra, Mata and most likely Rooney too will be back for the Southampton game, and United play better away. Do Ramsey to Eriksen if you don't already have him

Have Eriksen also, worried about Evra getting a game and Mata come to that.

I think there's a massive chance both Evra and Mata will start, even Rooney. Maybe you could go Rooney to Sturridge for a differential captain. Lukaku is not really trusted around these parts, for good reason too

Haha 🙂 Maybe, he does have his moments. I actually captained him vs Liverpool when he outscored Suarez, by a few points but still 😛 maybe another last day hattrick against a Hull side who just conceded twice to James Anthony Wilson

I am thinking of the same - bringing guys like Lukaku and even Adebayor and captaining one of them. Rival, who overtook me because he didn't get players like aguero, rooney, mata and evra for this dgw, will be playing by the book I guess.

                          Manonne (Adrian)
                          Alonso Evra Azpi (Dann, Chester)
Mata, Yaya, Eriksen, Nasri (El Ahmadi)
                          RVP, Aguero, Suarez

                          1FT 0.2m in the bank

Going to try and avoid taking a hit this week and might just do Aguero > Dzeko.

If Evra doesn't play Dann will come in. Mata is the only one I'm really worried about. Genuinely not sure whether Giggs will start him.

I think Mata'll come back into the team for the final game, Evra too. Aguero to Dzeko is a good move, considering it myself but don't wanna be trolled by a fit Aguero outscoring the giant Bosnian

I think aguero will be on the bench only in case of emergency. He won't want to risk himself with WC around the corner. If city win tonight they only need a draw.

Imo Wilshere's is the best, I preferred Suarez's other goal against Norwich too! Kasami's was pretty special as well

The close control and quick thinking shown in the Wilshere goal was like Spanish football, it was great play! I preferred Giroud's goal vs West Ham though, simply for his unbelievable control under pressure..

Ahhh now that's a quality goal, even more so when you consider Giroud is doing it 😛 Usually only Suarez, RVP and Mata can pull off touches like that

I'm very surprised Osvaldo's goal isn't mentioned a bit more. I think the technique it took to curl it that well and at that height was really something else. Not to say Rooney's wasn't extremely well done but I thought Osvaldo's was much more skilful. Maybe I just like my finesse finishes.

I like Shelvey and Kasami but Kasami probably edges it for me. However, it is not easy to pick the best from that lot as there a lot amazing goals.

The guy in my head to head league had been leading all season but last week I managed to overtake him.

This week is the semi final and it looks like he will get knocked out by 3rd placed team. He must be gutted. 😆

Could not going for it become the new going for it?

Let me explain season has one week left so either for fun or make up ground players may take big hits and go outside the box with captaincy or player selection.

Surely ground can be made captaining Suarez when those who punt don't?

Liverpool will put everything in that game hoping City will fail.

Instread of letting Wilson try to get his third goal, Giggs subbed himself on and made some kind of a Giggs testamonial game out of it. That was maybe the most pathetic thing I have ever seen on a football pitch.

Fergie brought Scholes on in the CL final as a farewell, Giggs is more than entitled to bring himself on in his final home game of his career in a nothing match for Lawrence(who wasn't all that on the night)

Giggs can be a pathetic man when he doesn't have a football at his feet.

                                    A) Rooney and Aguero -> Van Persie and Dzeko/Sturridge/Lukaku
                                    B) Rooney and Ramsey -> Eriksen and Dzeko/Sturridge/Lukaku

                                    Midfield and attack is now:

                                    Yaya Nasri Mata Sterling Ramsey

                                    Aguero Rooney Suarez

                                          Ramsey might play?

I would Defo look at Studge & Dzeko though, sorry to be boring.

Everyone is taking Rooney out, is he definitely out of the last game then? I haven heard anything?

Also, is Aguero definitely out too??

If so, it's Dzeko & Sturridge in for me.

Hi guys! I'm off on holiday tomorrow (won't have time to look before the deadline) and I've already done Ramsey, Aguero, Rooney to Yaya Toure, Sturridge, Dzeko for minus eight. Somehow got 3.6 left ITB - is anything here worth the extra hit? Thanks!

If they lose or draw tonight Chelsea come back into the race as well.

Even if they don't lose tonight, they can still lose on Sunday and Liverpool can win it.

FFS should buy a sister domain, RMT.co.uk...

I'm going to try and refrain from posting my team so no one knicks it. 😉

However, I may knick someone elses. 😛

I really hope there is a seperate area purely for RMTs. Pollutes the site and breaks up discussion when there's constant streams of them on the main threads.

And they say Rooney's goal was something special? 😉

So taking hits this gw should be avoided at all costs, but how do these sound:

                                    Rooney > Sturridge
                                    Aguero > Dzeko

                                    -4

Considering it myself, but not sure if I shall keep one of Rooney or Aguero and swap out Ramsey for Eriksen instead..

I was also thinking Eriksen but dont want to go overboard with hits

Same transfer i'm likely to do - may consider Giroud instead of Dzeko/Sturridge though.
