Fenley Wins FPL Crown

In what was the most tense and nail-biting finish to a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season in memory, Fantasy Football Scout member, Tom Fenley, has prevailed as champion.

Huge congratulations go to Tom on a day which saw him cling to his lead, having gone into the final Gameweek with a 13-point gap between himself and his nearest rival. Tom had that lead pegged by second-placed Borna Gamulin in what was a dramatic final day.

Everton’s clean sheet at Hull, together with bonus points for Daniel Sturridge and Samir Nasri saw Gamulin gain ground but, eventually, Arsenal’s clean sheet and Aaron Ramsey’s goal at Norwich proved decisive as Gamulin’s two Everton defenders were denied bonus points at Hull. When the dust settled, a single point won Tom the FPL crown.

While Fantasy Football Scout community members have won the FPL title on several occasions, Tom’s victory marks the first time that a member has triumphed. We’ll be catching up with Tom very soon to ask him to recall his season, the drama of the final day and just how he used our members area to help him over his campaign.

Again, our congratulations go out to Tom and to all the members of the Fantasy Football Scout community who enjoyed superb FPL campaigns. Special mentions go to Luke Weston, Veronika Solymosi and Eoin Maye who all sealed top ten finishes.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Hi guys, under League table filters, there are quarters 1 2 3 and 4. Any idea how to find out which gameweeks fall under which quarters? Thanks

Once hot topics disappear down the feed due to more recent hot topics shoving them down, are they lost forever? So it would take a lot of effort to see the older hot topics? Its a shame, there were some gems in there 😀

Do you mean you're in the camp of saying that Fulham never have good fixtures?

I do understand that position but I think you need to look at the articles less as "these are the only teams you should consider buying players from" and more as "just be aware that this is one factor in your decision"

The Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

The one key lesson learned is....

Every year I learn a new lesson which helps me do better (I've halved my rank every season so far). Two years ago it was to build team value at the start. in 2012/13 it was to take hits where necessary to get bandwagons and for doubles. T

This season I think it is to trust stats more. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but the stats told us that Suarez was in decline as an attacking force and that there were better options. Fear stopped me from putting the armband elsewhere. So next season my lesson learned will be trust in the stats and make the brave calls based on that.

What has been the key lesson you have learned this season?

Take less hits. Went a bit mad with them this season. Was 5 points away from my ML leader in GW 36, took too many hits for the DGW, and I lost any chance of winning as the gap went from 5 to 42 in 1 week.

Great work with your rank. I've managed to quadruple my rank from last season 😆

Watch as many games as possible.

For example, Yaya hasn't had the best stats this season, but anyone who watches City can see his influence and great attacking positions he gets into almost every game.

I say don't trust the stats...not blindly anyway

many years ago before we had Opta stats Mark was busy flogging the late Christian Benitez (R.I.P.)...and I had him in my team...he had lots of shots on target but I noticed that that they were almost all trundlers that the keeper could have picked up one-handed

ever since then I've made a point of watching all MOTD highlights looking for players who were unlucky not to score...I'm watching my own players as well as possible targets...so once in a while I trust my own judgement who to buy...but more importantly I often keep a player who hasn't scored points while other people are selling him

In my opinion THIS is how to get a differential in fantasy football

I've never taken as few hits as I have this season, and it has worked very well. Kept faith in the players I transferred in, planned the transfers, had some luck. Will jump on bandwagons earlier next season (missed Ramsey and got Yaya late).
A combined hits score of -28 pts the last four gave me a bad end to the season. Not saying hits aren't worth it cause I've had a few that has worked out perfect, but I fell for the hits galore in the last few due to DGW/injuries etc.

Be patient with players you've brought in, but know when to give up on them

oh and play the 1st half of the season like you play the 2nd (i've started badly every year for the last 5yrs!) - prob means being more willing to make bold moves early on.

      - Don't be afraid of early transfers and jumping on bandwagons, they pay off more often than not and gives you invaluable TV increase for spring season
      - Don't forget to look at the total score in addition to form - form and statistical distribution can be often be mixed up
      - Use your wildcard early if off to a bad start - but not before the in-form players/teams are clearly identified
      - Be careful to sign 3 players from same team - it may make it difficult to reshuffle to get in another emerging in-form player from that team (e.g. Lovren or Lallana in my case)

Team value really is key. I always knew to try and build it early on, but not jumping on Ramsey and Yaya early on, and holding onto falling players like Hazard and Soldado, left me finishing the season with 5.0M less in TV than a rival.

It's a pretty tough game when your opponent can afford Yaya to your AJ.

That said, I do think price changes need looked at, the game gets too easy for those with high TV at the end, even I could afford to have a strong team throughout, mostly consisting of top players.

I think one lesson I never really learned this season until it was too late to implement properly was the value of central defenders from the defensively solid teams due to the new bonus system. It is also better if their team doesn't score too many goals so that attackers don't steal their baps. I think the likes of Cahill and Kosc / Mert will be high on my wanted list next season from the start, assuming the bap system stays the same.

      be a dullard. 😉
Well anticipate every step of the season as Spidermatt did last season when transferring in a player looks the fixtures in blocks of 3-4 games and as Silva surfers demonstrated that don't be afraid to take hits as long it is sensible. (-4 to -8 is the limit). Trust your gut sometimes as well even though it maybe the most unpopular one (my Lukaku > Wickham worked as well as ditching Suarez in the final 3 GWs). It's sometimes wise to be unprepared during DGWs. Well there's a lot that I have learned this first full season so hopefully I'll win the Country league next time! 😀

Just wanted to add to the lesson you learned this year Jonty, i.e. trust the stats.

I monitor every single player in the league and I calculate how many points they earned over the last 4 weeks and how many minutes they played over the last 4 weeks.

I use performance indicators that tell me if a player is performing below average, average or above average for points and minutes played.

If one of my players is performing at an average or below average level then I add them to my out list. However, before I sub them out I will check if there is a reason for this dip, for example did they have really tough fixtures, was a key member of their team missing, etc. If I notice they had tough fixtures in this period but they have a nice run of easy fixtures then I may give them another chance. Otherwise it is out the door.

Doing this also alerts me early to players who are hitting form. When players are performing above average I add them to a list of potential signings and then I will analyse their teams fixtures and how they perform at home and away before making the decision on who to transfer in. If I notice there are 2-3 players who are bang in form and they have a nice run of fixtures then I will take a hit, assuming I have 2-3 under performing players on my out list as well.

I am currently doing copy and paste job from fantasy football site.

I add the data to tables I have in excel which sorts it. Once it is sorted in its correct format it is passed to other worksheets in my workbook.

http://tinypic.com/r/30crcox/8 - This is the main interface for your current team. You select the GW and players name and everything updates automatically for you. The N/A is only showing as I have not updated this weeks data completely so when it is looking for values they are not there yet.

I have different worksheets for different stats and I use these ones for comparing players.

Dont bring in players until theyve proven themselves in the hopes that they'll come good. Wait til they come good. It's worth missing out on one weeks points than a string of 1 or 2 pointers.

Dont try to be too clever with hits. Some hits work out but sometimes you're just playing with fire, where the hit isnt really necessary and it backfires.

Players who play week in week out without being rotated or injured are a joy going forward with your team and far less hassle than the flair picks who may or may not play

suarez more than stats proved fixtures are still the daddy for me. 19 goals in his first 12 games, then 12 goals in his last 21 games. the difference basically being liverpool had all their easiest home games at the start of suarez's comeback.
fixtures are why people thought arsenal had a chance of winning the league, it's amazing the illusions theys create in a 38 game season where rather than wait until january or ideally may we have to try and make conclusions every single week.
key lesson for me is probably jump on a set-piece specialist more even if it's the primary source of their points

When I realised I was actually in with a shout of winning my main ML, which has been running for several years, I went into meltdown so thanks to those who nursed me through the last two GWs.
Won the ML by 18pts, Rooney -> Dzeko for a hit before GW37 saved my bacon.

Also finished with a PB in the OR and the highest score achieved in our ML since it started out.

So thanks all, very happy today.

Should we exert a bit of community pressure on FPL to include more prizes?

I think at least 2nd and 3rd place should get runner up prizes and maybe a little something for the best performing manager of each month.

For the amount of clicks and page views they get from us they could really put a bit more effort into the prizes!

Re Fantasy World Cup Games, for the last world cup and the last euros I used a site called fsports.com which ran a great game where it was pick a straight 11 (no team limits) and after the group stages you had 5 transfers until the end, was good as you didnt have to constantly change it and there were no captains involved, but you had to be strategic and pick the best players.

Just visited their site, looks like they are only doing fantasy motorsports games now, tis a shame as I contend that that was the best game going.

C'est la vie - Mcdonalds and Sky games it is this year i suppose

My only regret this season would be finding this web site late.(I found this Website from the top leagues column on status page).Till that the damage had been done.I had used my Wildcard because 2 players had an injury which i could have solved by using hits.

And My wildcard team was made by friend who finished just outside 1k this season. He made my team as 5-2-3 only because he wanted to try something different. As I result I suffered for 2 weeks and then started taking hits to make it back to 3-4-3.

Guys over here helped me getting my january wild card team right and after that some green arrows came and I finished this season at 180k

    Thanks Guys for helping me

Just seen the transfer speculation linking Lallana & Shaw to Liverpool and Manchester United.

Vastly overpriced and slightly overrated comes to mind.

Ok Shaw is young and has scope for improvement but Lallana is no spring chicken and tbh I had never heard of him before this season.

Shaw is 18 and can only get better surely. Could easily get 15 years out of him. Worth the money I think.

Lallana is in the peak of his career at 27 so he has at least 5 years in him and suits Liverpool's style. Both good buys IMO.

      Totally over-priced.

However, probably the sort of players Man U should target, those who aren't in Europe next season anyways and looking for a bigger club.

For all the talk of Kroos and Muller, it's just not going to happen.

Team balance is key. I've found most years that it is very hard to get a good team together with any more than three heavy hitters (9m plus players). If a player is £14m or more as Suarez will then that could come down to two.

If Suarez is 14m, Yaya 12m and Ramsey 9.5-10m then that means there is no space left for Chelsea's new attacker - whoever that is. Mata/RVP or Rooney for ManUnited's inevitable upturn. It also means there is no space for Walcott.

for me I'd be looking at two of Yaya, Suarez or Ramsey...possibly just one. I'll be getting a Chelsea defender and a ManU attacker as well as whatever striker Chelsea buy. For me they would be priorities. I think Strurridge could be a far better bet than Suarez. As we saw this year 14m is a tough sum to fit in.

Yes it is true. I swapped for Collins though so didn't suffer the double fate of ditching a good player. Goal threat, clean sheet...he had the lot...or so I thought. Can't complain though - first top 1,000 finish in six years. 🙂

I agree with you Jonty. Team balance is very important as you dont want to be stuck with rotating cheap defs or mids. I remember people were looking at bringing Anelka in as their third striker just to afford RVP!

I agree with much of this, although i would say that 14m can be done and if he was to score again like this year would be worth it.

However i dont think that is likely, particularly because we're unlikely to witness his 'perfect storm' of points again from gw14-17 (24,15,22,16 - thats 77 points, or 26% of his overall total in just 12% of the games played, astonishing scoring.)

With Europe there will be a decline in his performance. Depends on other prices, but I much prefer to have balance. Also premium centre backs - like chelsea's and arsenals will pay for themselves.

To not buy Aguero just before he has a midweek game. In fact to not spend weeks with 2-3 million in the bank waiting to get Aguero, spending transfers to get him in and then spending transfers to get him straight back out.

Next season should come with a "Aguero injury wildcard fix"

Great player he is though 🙂

GW12, brought in McAuley as WBrom were televised on MNF. It was him or Mertesacker, but I wanted a player in MNF. McAuley got 1, Mert 11. It signalled the end for my televised transfers. It was incredibly thick.

If you base your decisions on sound reasoning they are not really mistakes. Yes, sometimes our decisions don't work out the way we expected them to but we didn't know that at the time.

For example you might have Mannone and Adrian as your two GKs, Sunderland are away to Man City and West Ham are at home to Cardiff. The wise decision would be to play Adrian but it may be that West Ham lose 0-1 and Sunderland get a 0-0 draw.

Transferring Bony in for Lukaku in gw12. Bony got injured and Lukaku scored a brace. Dont really class it as a mistake though as Bony would have scored well in that period, but it is my biggest annoyance.

The 'crystal ball' and wrong captain, benched points mistakes don't bother me.
They were done for the right reasons in foresight.
If Aguero wasn't injured, I doubt Dzeko would have outscored him GW37.
(And I'd have finished top 100)

        It's the ones I knew were wrong at the time but still did them which bug me;
Taking out Adebayor for Negredo for a one GW pre-Wildcard punt, instead of getting Szczezny in as intended - cost -16pts in one day.
Not getting Collins when I intended, risking Bruce playing & saving FT - cost -20 pts in less than a week.
        GW 37 - let's not go there.
Oh, and twice getting in Chambers and seeing him imediately dropped - has anyone had points from him?

Lots of others - but must have done some things right.

Caroll would be as well off to go and standby a stud farm more like.

I finished 213th from an OR of 2.2m going into GW6 in my first season and I'm left feeling disappointed and it seems a bit of an anti-climax.
        My lowest score since GW7.
Was so 76th a week ago and so close to top 100 finish.
Didn't play GW37 well - had very poor luck but made some of my own bad luck.
And changed the palying style which got me there.

Maybe this game just keeps raising our targets for failure.
Imagine how Luke Weston is feeling

        (Well played Luke)

What's the best transfer or transfers you've made this season?

Think it's gotta be bringing in Yaya for the first time for DGW 31.
Then it would be Puncheon for the DGW and then Schurrle(C) for this last GW.

Highlights of a horrendous season 😆

Got Lallana, Eriksen, Johnson, Adebayor & Eriksen in just as they started hitting form and ditched them just before they lost form.

Also dodged the Silva bullet around January even though he was a popular choice on here as I could see he was performing way below average. Also got Koscielny, Fonte, Cahill, Adrian & Mannone way before they were on lots of people's radar as I noticed they were exceeding their key performance indicators.

Obviously having Yaya, Ramsey & Suarez for large parts of the season really helped as well.

        Coleman from GW1
        Suarez GW6
Ramsey GW6 (enabled a lot of other transfers)
        Aguero GW10
        Hazard GW11

Benching Yaya GW35 when a lot of people panicked and sold him - had him as a differential GW36 and moved up to 112th
