The Promoted Clubs – Burnley

After Andy ran the rule over Championship winners Leicester City earlier in the week, we now turn to the runners-up, Burnley. Despite losing the previous season’s top scorer, Charlie Austin, to QPR just two days before their opening fixture, Sean Dyche’s men still went on to clinch automatic promotion in mid-April and return to the top-flight for the first time since dropping down a division back in 2009/10:

Impressively, Dyche’s achievement was all the more remarkable given that, of last summer’s 10 new faces, nine were free agents and the other, Michael Kightly, a loan signing from Stoke. It was only in January, when the Clarets boss acquired Ashley Barnes from Brighton, that he finally had the chance to splash the cash.

CS = Clean sheets
Burnley arrive in the top-flight having lost just five of their 46 Championship fixtures last season – fewer than any other side. The Clarets were particularly resilient in front of their own supporters and conceded just 14 times at Turf Moor over the course of the campaign; only twice did they ship more than one goal on their way to registering 11 clean sheets. Whilst they impressed defensively, Burnley scored just 37 goals at home – notching more than a single strike on 13 of 23 occasions.

On the road, they were relatively consistent in attack and scored only two fewer goals. At the back, though, Dyche’s side managed just seven clean sheets, conceding 23 times, with two or more goals against on six occasions.

The Manager

Affectionately nicknamed the “Ginger Mourinho” by Burnley fans, Dyche’s career started at Nottingham Forest where he joined the youth set-up whilst Brian Clough was still in charge. The centre-half failed to play a single match for the City Ground club and plied his trade with the likes of Chesterfield, Bristol City, Luton, Millwall, Watford and Northampton Town before his playing days same to an end in 2007.

Dyche returned to former club Watford as youth coach before being promoted to assistant manager under Malky Mackay. The Scot’s decision to leave for Cardiff in 2011 allowed Dyche to take the helm but despite steering the club to 11th spot in the Championship – their highest placing in four seasons – his time in charge lasted only a year before the Hornets new owners replaced him with Gianfranco Zola. After spending a month as part of the England Under 21 backroom staff, Dyche was named Burnley manager in October 2012 and led the club to 11th place last time around.

In terms of formations, Burnley tend to line up in a 4-4-1-1 system, though as Dyche explains:

“We like the two strikers to be up there and one coming off the shape. As regards to the players we’ve got, there’s no natural out-and-out striker. But it sometimes comes down to yardages and I’ve made it clear many times. Whether you use 4-4-1-1 or 4-4-2, you’re talking about 5-7 yards when one striker plays off the other. You can overthink these things, although there are no massive differences.”

The club’s defensive record, so fundamental to their recent success, has been down to Dyche’s determination to improve fitness and encourage his players to adopt a high pressing game:

“When I started out with Watford’s youth team, Barcelona were the best exponents of pressing their opponents to get the ball back. Everyone raved about their passing, but I thought their pressing game was unbelievable. When I took over, we looked at how they did it and felt that, as a group, we could do the same. It starts with Sam Vokes and Danny Ings up front, goes through midfield and on to the back four. Everyone has to do his bit to deny the other team space and get the ball back. It is just as important the players know the tactical structure we have put in place and the fitness levels and mentality that are required. Add a bit of talent and you’ve got a chance of performing.”

The Promoted Squad

Tom Heaton (46 apps) the former Man United youngster was Dyche’s first permanent signing for the club after arriving from Bristol City last summer. Nailed-on, Heaton played every one of his side’s league matches and looks nailed-on for the Turf Moor outfit.

Kieran Trippier (41 apps, 1 goal, 12 assists) the highly-rated right-back is likely to be our main focal point amongst the Burnley backline. A product of Man City’s academy, Trippier’s set-piece ability and delivery from the flank already have Arsenal eyeing up a possible bid as a replacement for Bacary Sagna. Dyche is keen for his full-backs to get forward as much as possible and one look at the statistics shows that Trippier is clearly the main beneficiary.

Michael Duff (41 apps, 1 goal) a veteran at 35 years of age, the centre-half played the vast majority of Burnley’s season, though it perhaps remains to be seen whether Dyche will scour the market for a more mobile replacement for the top-flight.

Jason Shackell (46 apps, 2 goals) an ever-present at the heart of the Clarets defence, Shackell was snapped up from Derby back in 2012 and has established himself as a key figure in Dyche’s resilient backline.

Ben Mee (38 apps, 3 assists) the first-choice left-back, Mee’s trio of assists is overshadowed by Trippier’s tally on the opposite flank and despite a consistency of selection, is unlikely to offer Fantasy managers the best route into Burnley’s defence.

Danny Lafferty (10 apps) started the season ahead of Mee in the pecking order but was quickly shifted to the bench and was selected just four more times in Dyche’s first XI.

Dean Marney (38 apps, 3 goals, 7 assists) snapped up from Hull back in May 2010, the central midfielder has netted nine times in the past couple of campaigns, though he has a propensity for picking up bookings and was sidelined through suspension on two occasions last term.

Junior Stanislas (27 apps, 2 goals, 3 assists) started the first three matches but was mainly utilised as a second-half sub by Dyche, with only another four of his 27 appearances coming courtesy of the first XI. On-loan Michael Kightly played 36 times on the left – producing 5 goals and 6 assists – and with rumours of a permanent return on the cards, Stanislas is likely to struggle for game time once again.

David Jones (46 apps, 1 goal, 5 assists) the former Wigan midfielder arrived on a free transfer last summer and immediately nailed down a regular role in the centre of the park. Jones also has a share of corners to boost his appeal.

Scott Arfield (45 apps, 8 goals, 3 assists) snapped up on a free transfer from Huddersfield last summer, the Scot was utilised as a sub for the first three matches before starting 42 of the following 43 league games.

Ross Wallace (14 apps, 3 assists) another player who rapidly fell out of favour. Wallace started the first three league matches but featured in the first XI on just two more occasions and was utilised as no more than an occasional late substitute.

Sam Vokes (39 apps, 20 goals, 5 assists) the former Wolves frontman suffered from a long-term cruciate ligament injury in 202/13 but started last term in fine form, with spot-kick duties helping him find the net 20 times. Vokes sustained knee ligament damage at the end of March, however, and is set to miss the start of the upcoming campaign – indeed, there are fears he may miss the first half of the campaign due to the problem.

Danny Ings (40 apps, 21 goals, 7 assists) after serving up just six goals in his previous two seasons with the club, the youngster stepped up as a key member of Dyche’s first-team. Voted Championship Player of the Year, Ings made his debut for England U21s in October last year and with Vokes sidelined through injury, looks set to be the Burnley forward of choice for those eyeing up the Lancashire outfit.

Ashley Barnes (21 apps, 3 goals, 1 assist) arriving from Brighton during the winter transfer window, Barnes’ first 10 appearances for the club came courtesy of the bench before injuries up front allowed him the chance to start each of the final 11 Championship fixtures.

Potential Targets

Whilst credit is due for achieving promotion with such a small squad, it’s clear that Dyche will need to expand for the step up to the Premier League. Already, the club have released four players – David Edgar, Brian Stock, Keith Treacy and Nick Liversedge – and are hoping to stave off interest in both Ings and Trippier ahead of the season kick-off.

Speaking with the local press, the Clarets boss admitted he’s prepared to be patient as he assess the market for options:

“It’s all about aligning everything. I don’t think we’ll be in a position where we go ‘bang’ and it happens. We’re obviously in a better position because we’re in the Premier League, we have finance to use, although not a bottomless pit. I don’t imagine we’ll be the biggest spenders in wages or acquisitions, but it will give us a chance to invest in good players. I’ll be looking for players that can affect the group – not at any cost, but certainly at cost, if and when needed. The players we have here know I’ll be pushing them and whoever comes in the building for more, because that’s what it’s going to take. We’ve moved up a division, simple as that.”

Plenty of names have already been linked with potential moves to Turf Moor. At the back, Newcastle’s Mike Williamson is rumoured to be interesting the Burnley boss, whilst in midfield, former Blackpool man Ludovic Sylvestre is allegedly on the radar. On the flank, Dyche is expected to return to Stoke in order to acquire Michael Kightly’s services once again.

Given that Vokes could be out for the first half of the season, though, rumours are rife over a number of forwards. Loan moves for Tottenham’s Harry Kane and United’s James Wilson have been mooted, as the pair look for regular game time under new managers next season, whilst Burnley can also look to bring back Austin if he fails to win promotion in the play-off final against Derby County this weekend.

As Dyche admitted, though, it’s perhaps best to take some of the names with a pinch of salt right now.

“We’ve been linked with everyone immediately, but I can assure you 99% of the names, there has been no contact, no link. Agents play their part, the one thing that is true is we have a small squad, it’s not rocket science, we are going to need to add to that squad, so if there are any names knocking about, people are going to link them to us, just because of our numbers.”

Well done Arsenal, congratulations and I am sincere. But!! For the select few bitter haters who cannot resist a pathetic stab at Chelsea because this is your first cup in a decade and somehow in your warped twisted minds you think this entitles you to bragging rights and a point of attack -- it doesn't equal our 4 FA cup wins since (when you last won anything significant) 2004, 3 Premier League titles, 2 Football League cups, 2 Charity Shields, 1 UEFA Europa League Cup, and of course, 1 Champions League cup. But enjoy your day. No doubt you're going to dine off this one for a long time..

      I'm not an Arsenal fan

This post seems out of character for you. You're normally more level headed.

Chelsea should have done better with their team and resources this season. Mourinho failed. He failed at Madrid with the resources he had too. The fact that Liverpool - whose biggest attacking investment was Aspas - finished above you is embarrassing when you think about it.

It's not to all Arsenal fans, I made sure I made that clear. Two members of my family are Arsenal fans, and I've always cheered them on when they play. This is to an exclusive section that have done nothing but be WUMs and attack Chelsea and it's fans at every opportunity. One trophy in ten years is really not the ideal soapbox. Also, finishing under a team that has Suarez and Sturridge up front, consistently banging in goals and managed extraordinarily well by Rodgers really isn't an embarrassment either. Liverpool in the 80's were the team that made me fall in love with football and take an interest in the sport as a young child from a single digit age. They also have a place in my heart 🙂

Fair enough. After this season, I feel BR is a better manager than JM, simply because he manages rather than buys.

Not so sure on that. BR is an excellent manager but his defensive management was one of the worst I've ever seen, let alone from a team challenging the PL. JM plays boring football in big matches (though the attacking stats for smaller games are better) but my days that Pool defending was embarrassing. My opinion on BR compared to JM will hinge on the next 2 seasons, if he can show this season wasn't an outlier, provide similar consistency and fix up the defending then he'll truly be right up there.

I think that was down to his defensive assets, rather than his tactics. Now they're in the Champions League, they can sign some quality defenders.

I think that's vastly naive. The same assets have been good defenders before, it was BR that benched Agger (the best CB at Pool) and insisted on playing Sakho to justify spending £18 million on him. I like the guy a lot, he deserves a lot of praise for how they went about the season but with that he must have criticism levelled at him and conceding 50 league goals was nothing but an absolute shocker.

Yet Mourinho beat Liverpool at the Bridge, and tactically outdone him at his own ground. Even Carragher and Neville agreed that Mourinho did a job on him. Sure you have your own opinion, but I'm rather inclined to agree with the educated opinion of two ex-professional footballers.

The more experienced Mourinho is naturally a better tactician at this point in time.

But he has a flaw in that he grossly underestimates some of the lesser teams.

Points dropped against West Ham, West Brom, Palace, Sunderland, Norwich and Villa cost them the league.

From my observation, he loses against the lesser teams because we are set up to hit teams on the break. But how can we break against teams and hit them on the counter attack, when we're camped in their own half, pinning them back, and exposing ourselves to counter attack? That has been the story against the supposed easy games. we do well against the big teams, because they do play to our strengths. They get in our half, and they play where we want them. Chelsea are at their worst when camped outside the opposition's 18 yard box, lifelessly passing the ball around like a hot potato, bereft of ideas. No one knows what to do, they cannot break down the defence like that. That is the problem against those teams.

I have a mad theory that what ultimately interests him on to be involved in the big games, plotting the tactics for days at a time, getting the finer details right and of course he likes the spotlight of the big games. He's like a general plotting his plan of attack for battle and he's damn good at it. I hated getting beaten at Anfield a few weeks ago but that game and their 1st leg against Atletico were tactical masterplans. The lesser teams don't float his boat so much.

Ferguson had no such problems with so-called lesser teams. You can't just be set up to hit teams on the break, hopefully Rodgers will learn this. Mourinho will definitely learn from it and strengthen his squad to allow him to go Plan A,B,C and beyond when required.

I agree with what you guys say. I just think that BR has managed his team better. He's made the players better. The improvements in them have been quite incredible. I can't think of many players JM has improved to the extent, say, BR has improved Henderson and Sterling. But JM is clearly an astute manager. I'd just like to see how he does at a club with weak resources. I don't think he's ever been in that situation, where you coach rather than buy.

I appreciate the nature discussion here by the way.

And I think you certainly have a fair point as well. I think, as I said, I'm reserving judgement until BR has had a couple of seasons consistently doing well and Chelsea have a new striker. I have a feeling a couple of Chelsea players would have actually done much better this season with a better front man.

Hazard has improved. Despite Mourinho's apparent criticism he tracks back more and brings others into play more. Azpilicueta is developing into a top class fullback. No mean feat to push Ashley Cole to the bench.

Hmmm, I can kinda see what you're saying, but Hazard was already pretty immense, hence the huge transfer fee. Azpil had already been solid for OM but has improved, but I'm unsure if it's to the same level as the transformation of some of those Liverpool players.

Both will be in Champions League but The Gunners won silverware. Forget the history lessons. I heard the dreaded Liverpool fans chant "FU Chelsea FC, you ain't got no history" witting in the Anfield Road end when Torres scored twice in November 2010. Chelsea were the reigning league champions at the time !!! History is for textbooks. You're only as good as you're next season.

Congratulations Arsenal and nice story that Ramsey scored the winner.

If you have no history, it's unimportant. If you have some, it is. No one is gonna convince either party that the other opinion is correct due to a little word called 'bias'.

However, when your club wins silverware due to being owned by a corrupt billionaire and money launderer, the victory can only feel empty. It's like playing Football Manager with the cheats turned on: all victories are tarnished by the fact it wasn't really a competition when you bought all the aces and left everyone else with the 3 of clubs.

My point is that history is important but it's not an excuse for LFC not winning the league in more than 24 years. And chanting that song to the Chelsea supporters who were the league champions at the time cos they were beating them , sounded pathetic to a Liverpool supporter.

And Arsenal were spending more than Chelsea in the early 90's when George Graham was a specialist in parking the bus. I couldn't care less about who has spent what, I support the team, not their bank balance. I've supported Chelsea since they came up from Division 2. Money wasn't a motive then, and it isn't now. I'm sure if Arsenal were taken over by a billionaire, your attitude wouldn't change. You don't just stop supporting your team because of something like that. It's a circumstance which is out of my control. I'm lucky enough to see the team I've loved for most of my life change and evolve, and have some of the best players in the world. To think I was excited when we signed Tommy Boyd, Vinny Jones, Andy Townsend, etc.. To come to what we have now.. It's astonishing. The child version of me would be overjoyed.

I think Wenger did deserve another trophy, so am happy for him on that part.

However the stabs at mourinho/chelsea are just unnecessary. Looking at mourinho...Yes, he didn't win anything this year or last year at Madrid - but Wenger had an 8 year run, and that's off the back of a team of invincibles. The right striker in the summer and chelsea could easily bring in a few trophies next season. I mean, considering we dropped two points from the top 4, we should have walked the league. Mourinho obviously should take a fair share of the blame for not seeing of smaller teams, and hopefully has learnt his lesson. Someone of managerial capability will always have something up his sleeve. But time will tell

Arsenal fans sprouted out of nowhere when George Graham won Arsenal the league in the early 90's. Pity you're too young to know anything about that, since you started supporting Arsenal since 2004 😆

You had a dog track around you pitch to subsidise your failing club.

You're the epitome of bitter, kid. You seriously think winning one cup absolves you of your bitter hatred and abuse that you've been slinging around all season to me and many others here? You're a joke. Tuck yourself in to your Arsenal duvet for the first time in ten years without crying or feeling ashamed. Enjoy it, as I'm sure you'll be back on the "Wenger out" bandwagon at some point next season at the first sign of trouble, just as you were throughout this season, glory hunter.

For what it's worth, I've said for years that Neymar is vastly overhyped 😉

Flashy footwork and great skill but that has come at the expense of substance. A lot of potential still there but Barcelona need to start working on him.

Burnley had the best defensive record in the Championship, and better than any of the previous season's promoted teams.

Don't know who's likely to be 4m though, or whether some of the promoted teams might strengthen their defences or lose key players

I've just posted below a brief overview of my opinion on Burnley, but can only see Mee & Duff as 4m (but pending on who Dyche brings in) these two (especially Duff) are at risk of losing their first team spot. Heaton will prob be 4.5, Shackell 5m trippier 5/5.5 (he'll prob be in everyone's team)

    Greenred,

    Regarding brakes.

I watched a step by step guide on YouTube. There's a few things that were different due to my car being made in France rather than Germany or something.... Which is what caused the issues as I'd noted everything detailed step by step from the video to ensure everything was fine properly.

I'm only 21 so if I learn these skills young, take a few risks, get the tools, I'll learn. I want to do a basic course for most skills, plumbing, electrician, mechanic etc just so I can attempt to do things myself. Plan to do them on the evenings and effectively just get to apprentice/A level standard for each skill

When I do accounts people pay £100/£150 each year for someone to submit a tax return, which is a 1 hour job, dead simple, if you invest a bit of time learning. Laziness costs a lot...

oh one thing about these scores, they are reflective of the first 90 minutes of the arsenal game and not extra time, therefore ramsey's goal isnt added nor is giroud's assist. (annoyingly i had him captain ;P) but it was agreed beforehand, extra time wouldnt be counted.

No, but I think it points that Suarez was less a reliable a captaincy choice this year than RvP had been the previous 2 seasons. Suarez got more big hauls than RvP but RvP could be relied on to get points on an overall more consistent basis and had a better record v top clubs. Also remember the changing of the BAPs structure, I do wonder whether this would have had a positive or negative effect on the RvP of the 2 previous years

I may not get him next season. It is my considered opinion that

            a) Knocking 2-3m off Suarez's price by going elsewhere and using that money in defence of midfield will more than compensate IMO

            b) People who think Suarez won't get rested before a big CL game are delusional. If Pool played say, West Brom, at home, on the Saturday before going to play Real away on the Tuesday, is Rodgers really going to risk Suarez? It's all very well saying he went all this season without injury but he certainly looked jaded at times and the lack of European football allowed extra time for rest and recouperation

Are people saying Suarez is overrated? Really? What more can the guy do? I guess score hat tricks against City and Chelsea? He tore Spurs, United and Arsenal apart, but clearly that's not enough. I really don't think these people saying this would be saying this if their club signed him tomorrow.

I never said he was over-rated. I said he was a flat-track bully. 50% of goals in matches v the bottom 4 is proof of that. I never said he was a bad captaincy choice either. Just that in terms of default captains he wasn't quite as reliable as RvP. I may have been wrong. Leaving out the first 5 games, Suarez blanked 6 times all season.

I think last season RvP had 4 or 5 blanks.

fair dos. My 2nd point still stands. Suarez will get rested for CL games or around then if a big game precedes it.

Liverpool were lucky with him not getting injured this season, hence why I think they'll be extra cautious with the added CL games thrown in

Same reason City are looking at Sagna. I think Zaba missed 2 games through inury last season, and was rested for one other. That will catch up with him, but with sicknote Richards they had no one to bring in. Sagna will allow them to rotate in the same way they do with Clichy and Kolarov

Being a flat track bully is surely good in a captain as you know when to captain him. I'd wouldn't have wanted to miss doubling 24 points v Norwich or 20 points v Cardiff.

I liked the idea of a medieval style TV series but all the gore, sex and swearing is just boring. I stopped watching after series one as I wanted Ned Stark to kick Jofrey's ass.

As for Breaking Bad, I've never watched it. An old dying man who starts making drugs just isn't my thing too many of my school friends died of drug use, so I'm a bit sensitive about shows that glorify drug dealers.

As a Burnley fan, i''ve been looking forward this article.

As the current squad stands (& Kightly I believe will be signing permanently)
He, Heaton, Trippier & Shackell will be the ones to look at for FPL team selection.
Dyche is no fool & can genuinely see us doing what Palace have done under Pulis, so getting the right defender would be key & the 3 aforementioned backline players (Heaton being our GK) will be first choice. In fact Heaton was in our top3 players of the season.

Attack wise, Kightly has done excellently for us, with his Premiership experience at Stoke, his quality should come through & would be the perfect 5th choice cheap mid, the Puncheon of this season just gone by.

What of Ings & Vokes you ask? Well, I personally don't go with two heavy hitter strikers & one cheapie, but if (unlike me) you would want a choice, I would avoid both & ironically choose our former striker Austin, if promoted with QPR.

I'd like to see Rafa developed and the only thing against Sagna is his age. Suppose I'm very reluctant to see us spend money on someone like Fellaini again, Sagna at least could do a job.

But ideally I'd like Rafa and another younger RB available.

they did, must have been nerves, and we was lucky with the corner decision, but there could have been 4 pens, i think 2 were stonewall and 2 would have been soft.

but what a game it must have been for the neutral.

                        Your 1st 3 seasons don't help.
You would have a rank around 100th on looking quickly.

Bit harsh that it counts those awful ranks. It's pretty obvious that anyone with a rank of 1 million odd hasn't been playing properly or have abandoned the game. But i guess it can't discriminate, so it's fair.

World Cup it's already in the air you can pick your 11 players and you can still make the team for the CL final. Of course Your CL points will be a crap because much people plays since GW1 but it's a good way to test the game, main difference is no baps and only 11 players instead of 15.
