Scout Report – Fernando

Manchester City made their second foray into the summer transfer market a couple of weeks ago by signing the defensive midfielder Fernando from FC Porto. Having failed with a bid back in January, the Premier League champions returned with an improved offer and finally captured the 26-year-old in a deal believed to be in the region of £12m:

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the move, the Brazilian was clearly delighted with his switch to the English top-flight, as Manuel Pellegrini attempts to win the title for the second successive season at the helm:

“I am so happy to finally be joining Manchester City. I’m looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and helping City to defend the title. It is a very exciting time to be part of this football club and I cannot wait to play in the Premier League. City fans can be assured I will give my all every time I play and I’m looking forward to many happy years in Manchester. I have enjoyed my stay with Porto and I thank the club and the fans for their support during my time in Portugal. Now I am ready for a new chapter in my career.”

The History

Fernando’s career kicked off in his native country with Vila Nova back in 2005. A couple of years later, having scored three times in 57 appearances for the Brazilian third division outfit, he was snapped up by Porto on a five-year contract. Loaned out to Estrela Amadora in his first season in Portuguese football, he netted once in 27 matches before returning to his parent club in time for the start of the 2008-09 campaign.

Nailed-on in the centre of the park, Fernando has been a key figure in a run which has seen his side win four league titles, two Portuguese cups, five Portuguese Super Cups and a Europa League title over the subsequent six seasons. At Porto, a total of 232 appearances over all competitions harvested five goals and nine assists for a player who is no stranger to incurring the referee’s wrath – over the course of his career, the 26-year-old has picked up 71 bookings and been dismissed on six occasions.

The Prospects

Nicknamed “The Octopus” due to his tireless running in the middle of the park, Fernando’s signing is a sensible one from Pellegrini. Last season’s acquisition of Fernandinho proved a masterstroke and laid the foundations for Yaya Toure’s best ever year in the top-flight – with the Brazilian situated in front of the back-four, Toure was afforded greater attacking freedom and served up 20 goals in City’s title-winning campaign.

It was noticeable last term, however, that City had no viable alternative for Fernandinho in the centre of the park. Indeed, in the five games he failed to feature, Pellegrini’s side drew blanks on four occasions (against Stoke, Sunderland, Chelsea and Norwich) as their swashbuckling ways were somewhat limited by the Brazilian’s absence, with Toure taking up a more defensive role as a result.

Fernando should offer City a like-for-like alternative to Fernandinho, then, and as Pellegrini look to overhaul the central midfield area, question marks will surely grow over the futures of players such as Jack Rodwell, James Milner and Javi Garcia, with Gareth Barry already leaving for Everton. Bearing in mind City scored in every game with Fernandinho in the side, his contribution – whilst failing to catch Fantasy managers’ eyes – was vital in affording Pellegrini’s attack-minded players the freedom to flourish.

If, as expected, the City boss continues with the 4-4-2 formation that harvested 102 goals in 2013/14, Fernando’s arrival merely strengthens the champions’ options. A lack of attacking potential means few will look to bring him on board but, as Fernandinho showed last term, the knock-on effect bodes well for the likes of Toure, David Silva, Samir Nasri, Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko further up the park.

As the article aluded to, City certainly suffered with their lack of depth in the middle of the park last year.

This signing will undoubtedly help better rest / rotate their midfield players; especially during those cold winter stretches with midweek CL commitments...

On the whole, a very prudent signing.

Fernandinho played nearly every match last season up to the final month. He needs someone to rotate with. Same reason Sagna was bought, he will help provide cover to Zab. City may not be buying as much as others in the league this summer but certainly buying smart. Hopefully will pay off in the coming season.

Excellent, Argentina on the drift. I can only imagine it's because the bookmakers got quite greedy last night (Germany @ 2/1 😯 ) and were subsequently absolutely hammered by the professionals. They're hoping to get their money back quickly but they've chose the wrong team to lay tonight. It's time for potential winners to show their hands and Argentina will be cosy victors against this bunch.

    Thanks Paddy.

last night summed up luiz perfectly, and not the player but reactions of him. one bad game and being a player of the tournament previously is irrelavant. like when alan hansen used to have to wait 3 or 4 months to have a go at his defending then make out like it was a weekly thing.
luiz = neuer = lloris = 2013/14 kompany. they take risks above and beyond, and they're allowed to because they're amongst the best in the business. as a result they'll make a bigger howler than the average player every now and then though. the weird thing is luiz isn't treated the same as neuer, lloris and kompany

Luiz is an incredibly talented individual, I think he could potentially be one of the best defensive mids in the world, but he lacks the discipline for CB.

Kompany roams from CB but he always gets back in time, Luiz left Dante horrendously exposed last night and just look at how Luiz lost Muller for the first goal..

Great player but definitely a liability at CB.

actually think defensive midfield requires more discipline as there are greater distances to cover, CB is just a different pressure as there isn't the safety net of another line of players behind you

Greater distances doesn't mean more discipline, it just takes more work ethic.

At CB you can't let ANYthing past you, because if you do, they'll probably beat the keeper.

At CDM, you can let them past you and you can roam, so long as you do enough that your defence isn't overrun, you just have to break up play wherever the play is. David Luiz is excellent at this, and he always roams further up the field to put pressure on the opposition (on the front foot all the time) but when he roams forward, that's when Kroos loses Paulinho and strolls up into David Luiz's supposed position, unmarked, and then scores.

Thiago Silva covered Luiz's antics by being one of the best readers of the game around at the moment. Without Thiago, and with the much more static Dante, they were completely found out.

No don't get me wrong, the German performance was the reason for the 7 goals, they were awesome, but Brazil were also a complete farce defensively.

Watch the 7 goals again and just look at how much space every single one of them was left with when they scored. There's a reason this doesn't happen often, the defence normally stick to their men, Brazil couldn't keep their shape or stick on their individual men. It was embarrassing positional sense from Brazil

I thought Luiz was a disgrace last night personally. He completely abandoned his teammates in an attempt at self glorification. Surely he had to take on board that Thiago wasn't there and adapt accordingly. He was given the armband and showed no sense of pride whatsoever after they went 3 down. What he did to Muller when he ignored there was a match going on and instead ran at him with the ball and attempted to clean him out was deserving of a red and a ban if he had made any contact like he intended. One of the worst defensive performances I've ever seen.

Nobody, I just think he deserves the criticism he's getting for last night, I'd be worried if I just spent 50 mill on him, unless I had a plan for how to cope with his obvious faults.

He has so much raw potential but he needs to be tamed into something specific, because he's neither a CB nor a CDM at the moment.

To be fair I am not the only one who disagrees. Maybe you should take other peoples comments on board. It just seems you stand by your statements whether you know they are right or wrong just because someone else opposes.

no chance it was self glorification, that's absurd. being too desperate for brazil to win maybe, magnified by being the captain for once (probably not best suited to being a captain personality wise)

The system Brazil were playing seemed to have Gustavo's role as the man who was supposed to cover for the cb's when they went forward. Gustavo is a terrible footballer and although Brazil do need a player like this in cm I can't believe they couldn't find one better than him. He was anonymous yesterday and both his and Fernandinho's performance's were far worse than Luiz's imo.

I would somewhat agree that very often when he cocks up it is ignored but when he's good it is widely lauded. Somewhat different to Luiz in that regard, while I do honestly believe he did not have a good game, the daggers are out whenever he makes a mistake. I thought Marcelo and Maicon were worse or, at the very least, as culpable.

But what I will say for Luiz, the reason I love him, is that he is like a Brazilian of old. Incredibly passionate and fiery, loves the game, actually has a lot of talent and ability. I'm surprised he's never been given the role of attacking CM.

TBF both Luiz and Kompany are excellent defenders imo.

Defending has moved on since the days of Pallister and Bruce or Adams and Keown/Bould. Back then one of the defenders would attack the ball in the air while the other would cover behind whereas now defenders try and attack the ball on the ground too with the other defenders/def mids covering the runners should the ball break.

I'm not passing comment on which is better but usually progress/evolution leads to improvement.

agree. he rolled the dice too much. the runs started when brazil went behind, losing 7-1 is no different to 2-0, brazil are out. he shouldn't have been forcing the issue as a centre back with 70 odd minutes still to go. it was wrong and it probably set the tone for the whole team to be too desperate. he probably needed another captain to give him a verbal slap and just do the job he'd been doing all tournament and trust the midfield and attack to make things happen (although would you trust fred, hulk and bernard?).
ahh, that last bit sounds like a fanboy retrospective comment plucked to aid. it was a horror game. that's the thing, it was 1 game, it was nothing like his other brazil performances as he's never been captain and they've never been losing by a couple of goals. that's the main difference, not thiago silva

I just think he has a tremendous naivety that a player like Kompany doesn't. Kompany may take risks, but they are calculated. I honestly think Luiz just acts off instinct and doesn't really think about the bigger picture most of the time.

he does seem very instinctive for sure, and on paper that's better suited to attacking players. the risks were stupid in hindsight, but say one of his runs made it 1-1 or pulled it back to 2-1, then he's a hero. (tbh the risks were probably stupid in foresight too, i'll give you that. this was a unique footballing & social situation i think brazil found themselves in so added to going behind & feeling like the captain/culprit/a senior player it was a recipe for disaster for luiz)
and yes to below the corner being a nightmare, i can't remember who it was specifically as i was too busy facepalming. this is sort of my point really too, i don't automatically trust when people have a go at luiz for a goal any more

But the very first goal was directly Luiz's fault, he was given the job of marking Muller, he failed, muller scored, then he proceeded to start running all over the place to make up for his own mistake, and that backfired into the worst result in history for them.

How do you read it then? Because the first goal was Luiz's man scoring from the 6 yard box from a corner with Luiz standing 2 metres away.

Great movement from Germany, great set piece, good execution, but Luiz lost his man.

Ah Gustavo was useless and invisible too, none of the defensive players had a good game, but I don't think Luiz even had a reasonable game, which was your original point.

I think Luiz contributed more to the defeat than anyone on the pitch, Maicon and Gustavo and Marcelo might have had even worse games, but it was up to Luiz to keep the ship steady in Thiago's absence, he was the stand in captain and in a game like that against someone as good as Germany, you cannot leave your post and abandon your teammates, he did exactly that on numerous occasions. Doesn't matter what his intentions were, he was absent where he was needed.

Fred and Hulk. Says it all. Don't think that I have ever seen such crappers at this level.

I think the whole thing comes down to personality really, the rest of those names still give off the image of knowing exactly what they're doing when they take a risky run etc. Luiz doesn't give that, it seems more like he's momentarily lost the head.

Running 50 yards forward, and then walking back, isnt a mistake stemming from high risk play, it is stupid, childish and selfish.

He makes far too many mistakes a it is, but last night he made about 100 mistakes.

        I'm in the "rubbish" camp
You could blame him on all goals, either positional or just damn right laziness

There was 1 example when he was on the edge of the penalty area literally watching what happened without moving

On going 1/2-0 down they needed a cool, calm captain and CB to steady the ship

        He couldn't handle it

I'm late to this conversation, but Focusing on any one player from that match instead of an entire organization's -- and nation's for that matter -- absurd deification of an injured Neymar is a bit unfair.

They came into that match with their reason for losing hash tagged and ready for sale, and they got just what they deserved. The players were merely props for a marketing campaign of martyrdom, which coming from the host country is one of the worst examples of hospitality imaginable. They looked as if they had signed up for a WC semifinal only to find themselves on stage at some bizarre benefit concert.

David Luiz played abjectly, but he bears little responsibility for that defeat.

Well said AB, it will be interesting to see how PSG do with Thiago and Luiz as their cb's in the CL next season.

        Nearly. 🙂

"When the moon is in the Seventh House
        And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars

This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius
        Age of Aquarius
        Aquarius! Aquarius!

        Harmony and understanding
        Sympathy and trust abounding
        No more falsehoods or derisions
        Golden living dreams of visions
        Mystic crystal revelation
        And the mind's true liberation
        Aquarius! Aquarius!"

      There are 5 steps
      1. Kneel down
      2. Clasp hands together
      3. Close eyes
      4. Pray
      5. Put your hands in the air like you are David Luiz

I thought Marcelo and Maicon had worse games than Luiz last night. But that doesn't play into the narrative as well for the media since Luiz is now a 40-50 mill player

As good as Cole defensively and with a similar trophy haul but with much more attacking threat and 33 goals. Try telling that to a Chelsea fan though!
