Six Reasons Why Steven Gerrard Should Be In Your Team

For the last two or three seasons Fantasy managers have often overlooked Steven Gerrard, with excuses ranging from his age and withdrawn role to his often steep price tag. But with 205 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points last season and already a goal and five FPL bonus points this term is it time to admit he should be one of the first names in your Fantasy side?

HISTORY

To show just what a key player he is in the FPL game, in particular, where his goal and assist count is supplemented with bonus points, here is a run down of his history.

  • 06/07 – 180pts (10.5)
  • 07/08 – 200pts (10.6)
  • 08/09 – 216pts (12.4)
  • 09/10 – 159pts (12.5)
  • 10/11 – 88pts (11.3 – fewer than 1900 minutes played)
  • 11/12 – 75pts (9.4 – fewer than 1300 minutes played)
  • 12/13 – 185pts (9.2)
  • 13/14 – 205pts (9.7)

This averages at 9.4 goals and 8.8 assists a season and increases to 11 goals and 10.5 assists per season when you remove the 10/11 and 11/12 seasons in which he barely played due to injury.

Six Reasons To Draft In Gerrard

Here are my six key reasons why Steven Gerrard is still a force to be reckoned with in Fantasy Football.

  • His Record – As shown above, when given playing time he scores points. Lots of them. Also important is the fact that he rarely loses them as his low proportion of cards shows. He was one of the top midfielders last season and is only priced at 9.0 (8.9 as of writing).
  • 90 minutes – He rarely gets substituted and, whilst Liverpool are in the Champions League this season, he is likely to start the vast majority of Premiership games. Also, with his position in the Liverpool formation, and the attacking quality of the rest of the Liverpool midfield, he doesn’t have to bomb forward anywhere near as much as he did when he was younger, maintaing his fitness levels for longer.
  • Assists – Gerrard has a massive potential for assists. He takes free kicks and corners, has accurate long passes and posesses a sublime through ball. Whilst we rarely saw this for England, for Liverpool, especially under Rodgers, he sets up a lot of goals.
  • Penalties – These are more or less free points. According to the FPL history he has only missed five since 2006 which is an excellent conversion record. Nor is anyone likely to take penalties off him. Whilst the lack of Suarez has made many think that Liverpool will not win as many penalties as before, Raheem Sterling’s runs, coupled with the penalty-box presence of Daniel Sturridge and Mario Ballotelli, should still see a fair return from the spot.
  • FPL Bonus  – Whilst having been tweaked in a way that seems to predominantly favour centre-backs, Gerrard has shown that his defensive anchor role benefits as well. In three games thus far he has scored one goal and returned five out of a maximum of nine bonus points. Most telling, for me, are the Manchester  City game’s bonus points award. In a match where Liverpool were trounced and he neither scored nor assisted, Gerrard still picked up two bonus points. This suggests he will be a source of points even when Livepool struggle in matches. With most of the top sides playing attacking football this opens up returns that the likes of Sterling, who relies on goals and assists alone, will be unable to provide.
  • Fixtures – The next six fixtures for Liverpool are exquisite, with home games against Aston Villa, Everton, West Brom and Hull as well as away fixtures against West Ham and QPR. The potential for Gerrard to rack up a penalties, assists, goals and bonus points looks strong over the coming months.

There you have it. Steven Gerrard. Steady source of good points in Liverpool’s midfield. With an FPL ownership of just 5.5% and with hugely favourable fixtures over the autumn, Gerrard could be one of the best differentials in the game.

Tiggsy Defender of the weak, and all-around good guy.

I'm convinced. Gerrard is my kind of player and those fixtures are sensational. Sterling and Gerrard double up very much a possibility.

I'm not. It uses his record as an argument when A) The player is now firmly in how twilight years B) A means that Rodgers has vowed to rotate him in order to prolong his career, where CL football makes this particularly essential (and probably means 90 minutes becomes less likely as the season goes on), and C) The team has radically changed this summer with more diverse attacking options - assists can now come from several places on the pitch and Henderson looks more inclined to get involved, particularly as Rodgers has said he wants to see goals added to his game.

Wait for a fixture pile up and see whether it works out. I'm incredibly dubious.

He's been in my team for the last two seasons and was a differential compared to many of my friends. However, I've dropped him this year because of all these points that Lucy pointed out.

I could double up too. He could be my Lamela upgrade. If I don't decide to go Silva

Gerrard now plays in a more deeper role..his History is amazing no doubts..but then he used to play attacking as well...Now you hardly see him attack...I am Staying away from Gerrard..

I don't think the issue is whether he attacks Moin, he has enough set pieces and a great pass to offer attacking returns.
The bigger issue for me is CL rotation and No Suarez to assist/be brought down in the box.
He's definetly a good pick but I think I'd rather punt on Henderson to allow other heavy hitting mids and strikers in my squad.

    Here is my counter argument:

    1. I think Coutinho has taken some corners off him.
    2. Even if he lasts the 90, his recent scoring record from open play is terrible. The last one being the header against everton ( Means he didnt take the corner)
    3. Doesn't Have the potential to be nearly as explosive as the other liverpool options.
    4. Frankly, his new position in the liverpool formation means he is basically playing the role of the 3rd centre back. And spraying passes around. How likely is a long pass played out from the defence going to end up in an assist?
    5. Cheaper options in Henderson or Coutinho
    6. If a double up is on your mind: the combination of Sturridge and Sterling or Balotelli and Sterling has the potential to be much much explosive.
    7. The fixtures and history may indicate Gerrard to be a good be a good option, but I think there are much better options to spend money on in the Liverpool team.

Great Post. people get too carried away with punts like Tadic and Cabella when there are more solid options available.

It feels like we had all that "gerrard is past it and playing too deep" conversation this time last year so I was amazed to see that 13/14 was his second best season ever
I'm still not getting him but maybe we are all too blinkered by the shiny new things like Sterling and Bibotelli

One of the reasons I love this article is that it generates some really good debate. Yes Gerrard is past it, but last season as DT42 pointed out we were saying exactly the same thing as we watched those 205 pts rack up through free kicks, penalties and assists. Five bonus in three games this season alrready - one of which was a defeat. That Gerrard chap certainly has a certain something about him that makes him wonderfully divisive from a journalistic point of view. Great article Tiggsy.

i love gerrard. always did. had him in my team for long periods last season, but im feeling there are better options in the liverpool team this time around, with the current form of sterling and henderson, and the exiting potential of sturridge and balotelli up front, not to mention the impending return of lalana, who was also one of the cornerstones of my team last season which finished 1184 overall.

Currently on a WC and having some thoughts abour Rooney/Welbeck/Gerrard/Zaha Right now I have:

    Foster (Krul)
    Iva/Clyne/Chester (Wisdom/Hutton)
    Zaha/Ramsey/Sterling/Siggy
    Rooney/Studge/Costa

    I could also do Gerrard+Welbeck for Rooney+Zaha.

Thoughts? Rest of the team ok?

Would people double up with Sterling though? The Real Madrid fixture clash would also be a concern in terms of rotation

Love this article, and as Jonty said it has generated some great discussion.

All the reasons not to bring him in are exactly what everyone said last year and he ended getting his second best score ever.

He does exactly what Pirlo does, sits back and plays perfect passes all day long.

I think him and Sterling will end up on around the same points at the end of the season so a double up could be a very good tactic.

Hopefully his price will drop again then I would be very tempted to snap him up.

I got Sterling from day one so am happy to sit on him for a while and see who fairs better.

Galz mentioned the return of Lalana, that could have some impact on SG but we won't know if it will be a positive or a negative impact.

Three reasons not to pick him - Sturridge, Sterling and a potential 5.5 defender.

Playing The Sun game, where there are no assists and players are mostly scored on goals and The Suns match ratings they give players... Would you transfer any of Ramsey, Siggy or Fabregas out to get Sterling in?
