This week’s ScoutCast is a throwback – a return to the days when Granville moaned about his team of red flags and names like Robin van Persie and Yaya Toure dominated our thinking.

Granville and I slip into such subject matter like it’s a pair of old slippers, whilst assessing the Aguero fall-out, the Dzeko option, Ivanovic versus “Dave” Azpi and how I’ve modelled my Fantasy Football management style on Roy Hodgson.

We roll out the regulars and lament the demise of the ScoutCast team – eliminated in the opening round of our own cup competition. Some things never change.

Swim in nostalgia via this link or roll back the years via the player below…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Yeah, but who first ? 🙂 Want to get Silva in. Reckon City could pump Leicester more than Everton do QPR. Then Everton will find Soton away tough enough on the week after. Dzeko does miss a good few chances, but he may still get several....

I have just got in Lukaku, so him.

I'm waiting for tomorrow's presser to see if it's likely dzeko starts. If it looks that way, he's coming in too.

But yeah, as others have said, I think Lukaku over Dzeko just now

If Jovetic was injured, yes. But they'll share game time, and Dzeko isn't on form. Its important to pick nailed-on players now when there's alot of injuries, suspensions, and rotation

A historical analysis of Man City CS's and what it means for FPL:

Historical stats always need to be taken with a pinch of salt, but considering that City's defense has been largely intact for several seasons (i.e. Hart, Zaba, Kompany, Clichy, Kolarov have been there for years now) I think there is some validity in looking at historical data in this case.

Here is a breakdown of their CS's, sorted by home/away:

    2011/12
Home (11): SWA WIG EVE ARS STO LIV FUL BLA BOL WBA MUN
Away (6): bla wba wig avl wol new

    2012/13
Home (10): SUN SWA AVL REA STO FUL CHE NEW WIG WBA
Away (8): whm che wig ars qpr avl swa rea

    2013/14
Home (10): NEW HUL NOR TOT SWA CPL STO FUL AVL WHM
Away (6): sto new nor hul mun cpl

    2014/15
    Home (2): MUN EVE
    Away (3): new avl sot

As you can see, City have been very consistent in tending to get around 10 CS's at home every season. However, they have only got 2 so far this season, which can be explained by looking at the tough home fixtures so far this season:
    - LIV STO CHE TOT MUN SWA EVE

On the bright side, their remaining home games look very promising and ripe for CS's:
    - CPL BUR SUN ARS HUL NEW LEI WBA WHM AVL QPR SOT

With that in mind, I would suggest that having (at least) 1 City defender could be essential going forwards, and I turn my attention to Joe Hart:

    1. Despite the relative lack of CS's, Hart is still ranked 3rd among all GK's, and could very well become the bona-fide No.1 FPL choice for the run-in as the CS's rack up.
    2. Note that he picked up save points in most of the tough fixtures too (LIV ars TOTx2 qpr sot), and only got less than 2pts once.
    3. At 6.0 he is the cheapest (nailed-on) way into the City defense (Zaba&Kompany cost 6.4m), and could well be worth the extra 0.5-1.0m outlay on GK given the abundance of good home fixtures.

I would love to hear your thoughts, whether you agree/disagree, or just have general comments! 😀

They kept clean sheets against Stoke and Swansea in each of the 3 previous seasons at home, but not this season . Maybe they just aren't as solid at the back this season?

Stoke are a different beast this season, much more of an attacking threat than in previous seasons. Swansea are arguably better with Siggy too.

Look at those home fixtures they've had... its pretty obvious that they aren't just less solid

Swansea are far less attacking away from home this season and Stoke have failed to score in 4 games this season against the likes of Leicester and Liverpool. I wouldn't be surprised to see them concede goals when you least expect it

All teams concede sometimes though. I like what I've seen recently, and the stats also suggest they are tightening things up at the back.

      The problem is,
Are your wiling to "just" have 2 City spots available?
Dzeko (and then Aguero), Yaya/Silva/Nasri and Zaba/Kompany looks so much appealing…for that run of fixtures.

      1. rickardinho

I can't see myself ever wanting more than Aguero+Yaya in the outfield positions.

And besides, I can reassess that at the Jan WC when Aguero is back 🙂

So you are getting Hart for Fabnsky?

            • 11 Years
            11 years, 7 days ago

Not sure. I've got Fab-Elliot and the two options im considering are Fab>Hart or Elliot>Panti and rotating. I'd probably suggest that you do Krul>Hart as otherwise you'll have 0.5 locked into Krul until the Jan WC I think, and Hart is the best single GK choice. I'm leaning that way myself as well

    6. Walsh
      • 12 Years
      11 years, 7 days ago

Nice post. I think Hart is the far and away best choice for those with the non-playing keeper conundrum with all these injuries. I still wouldn't touch any of their defenders due to concerns over rotation. Putting those home games they have had into context - wow were those tough. Can't wait to load up on City players with my January wildcard 🙂

        Cheers.

I don't think he's that far and away the best though, since Fab-Panti would be a great rotation 0.5 cheaper. But Hart is certainly a great pick too

I'm saying as a route into their defense right now. I would prefer to make just the one swap to him over getting one of their defenders. On WC is a whole different ball of wax.

    Evening all, quick one..

    Aguero & Cesc »»»»

    A). Costa & Yaya

    B) Dzeko & Hazard

    Both -4

£3.4m saved by doing B) allows me to upgrade chambers to a city Def next week and Marney to a better fifth mid for suspensions/rotations etc..

    1. Ludo
      • 12 Years

A, if you can't bench Cesc.

It's close... I prefer Hazard to Yaya, but not yet convinced on Dzeko's gametime or form, though I do like him as a player.

        Krul
        Duff
        Chambers
        Cesc

I'm actually tempted tbh. Lots of good home games coming up, and 5.7 isn't too much if you've got someone who can cover rotation.

The only worrying thing is that he gets subbed on late in alot of games though

I discuss City's defense above, you might enjoy that read.

I think its safest to stick to Hart, Zaba, or Kompany... and I only say Zab because he never gets subbed late so you can manage his rotation reasonably well.

Had a nightmare gameweek of red cards and injuries, and now left with ONLY the following players available this week:

    ----------------------- Courtois ----------------------

    --- Ivanovic ----- Bertrand ----- N.Taylor ---

    Sanchez - Eriksen - Sigurdsson - Marney

    ------------------------ Kane --------------------------

3-4-1 not ideal! Not looking so good...

Hutton's got a couple of good fixtures coming up Creswell will score more over next 10 matches. Depends how long you wanna keep? However, with Wildcard coming up I'd go for Hutton. Also, that way you can save some cash. He might rise due to goal last GW as well so you could make a bit in the short term then decide whether or not to ditch when WWC comes round

Thinking of my transfers for next GW, who would you rather have:

    A. Chambers & Clichy
    or
    B. Duff & Terry/Azpi

(the rest of my defense is Baines, Naylor, Yun)

I am getting twitchy in holding him at the moment...just don't fancy having him and Hazard the way Chelsea have been settling for two goals a game lately.

I'm going without Costa, so I'd like to have both the Chelsea midfielders. Fabregas, generally, gets you 6+ points a week. I'd like that.

I have Hazard and Costa, so it's too risky to triple. I just got the trio last week and boom ... The first loss in the league.

If Costa doesn't fire, I might see the way back to Fab.

As a non-Costa owner, I'm going with Courtois/Fabregas/Hazard. Consistency is key.

Was Kane saved for the weekend?

Just to check if he's not injured as he was not in squad last night.

I'm wondering if he will start behind Soldado again. There are pro & con for him to play that position. He involved more than Soldado, but less big chances he got

    Take -4pts for Kane -> Dzeko ?

    1. Walsh
      • 12 Years
      11 years, 7 days ago

Yes he was. I don't think that is a good point hit (coming from a Kane owner looking to get rid). I can see him actually getting a start as a lone striker in this one..or at least I'm hoping. Perhaps Poch will favor this route when they play on the road.

If we don't get rid this week, we will definitely keep him for next two gw too and missed the chance to get benefit from 3 City games. Dzeko could rise 0.9m if he bangs!
