Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 20

The New Year heralded in a number of injury concerns earlier today, with treatment rooms around the country opening their doors to accommodate a host of new arrivals.

Arsenal
Mathieu Flamini missed today’s 2-0 loss at Southampton through injury, whilst Arsene Wenger has
confirmed Lukas Podolski was unavailable after sustaining a groin problem.

Aston Villa
Skipper Ron Vlaar was forced off during the first-half of today’s goalless draw against Palace with a knee injury. Post-match, Paul Lambert confirmed the Dutchman is set to be assessed prior to the weekend:

“I am not 100% sure but he’s thinking it could be the same sort of thing that he hurt in the World Cup. It’s his knee. We will probably know more tomorrow. He will go for a scan. Hopefully it’s not too bad. He thinks it might be similar to the one he had in Brazil. We will have to wait and see.”

Burnley
Sean Dyche is counting the cost of today’s comeback draw at Newcastle, after Jason Shackell (calf), Dean Marney (illness) and Kevin Long ((ankle) were forced off. The Burnley boss is sweating over the latter’s availability, with the debutant stretchered off in the 3-3 stalemate:

“Kevin is the big question mark. It needs to settle and the medical team will get on that over the next couple of days. We are hopeful Shacks is not as bad as we maybe first thought and Dean is just sickness. He was almost vomiting before the game and it is a strange one. ”

Everton
Kevin Mirallas started on the left of a front three away to Hull but was withdrawn at the break, with Roberto Martinez confirming:

“Kevin was feeling a little bit sore at half-time and we needed everyone to be 100% in order to be dynamic.””

Hull
Andrew Robertson is set for x-rays on his ankle and foot after a challenge from Everton’s Mo Besic forced him off on 23 minutes today. Liam Rosenior was withdrawn before the hour mark due to a hamstring problem, whilst Gaston Ramirez was subbed off at the break as a result of his ongoing groin complaint.

Leicester
Danny Drinkwater was replaced by David Nugent on 36 minutes after picking up an injury during the 2-2 draw at Liverpool.

Liverpool
Adam Lallana’s recent run of form was halted earlier today due to injury. The Reds midfielder was subbed off early in the second period, with Brendan Rodgers confirming post-match:

“He’s got a tweak in his thigh, so we’ll see how that is.”

Mario Balotelli missed out altogether after sustaining an injury in training.

Man United
Ashley Young could be set for a period on the sidelines, according to Louis van Gaal, after he was forced off during today’s draw at Stoke.

“He has a hamstring injury. He’s out for many weeks, I think. But I’m not a doctor so we have to wait for tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.”

Newcastle
The Magpies look poised to be without Steven Taylor for the remainder of the season. Caretaker boss John Carver confirmed the worst after the centre-half was taken off during today’s draw with Burnley:

“Unfortunately there’s bad news with Steven. It looks like he’s snapped his Achilles tendon – the other one (to which he injured against Chelsea in December 2011). It’s a fresh injury and I’m so disappointed for him because he got off to a great start. He’s a good character and he’ll deal with it. We’ll make sure he’s looked after and everything will be done properly.”

Southampton
The Saints’ in-form wide man Sadio Mane was withdrawn after scoring his third goal in as many matches in today’s win over Arsenal. After the 2-0 triumph, Ronald Koeman is uncertain whether Mane – who is soon set to fly to the African Cup of Nations with Senegal – will be available for the weekend FA Cup clash with Ipswich:

“I have to wait until Friday, I don’t know what happened exactly, we will know more then if he is available for Sunday or not.”

Sunderland
Santiago Vergini was withdrawn on 77 minutes after picking up a knock in the Black Cats’ narrow loss at City. Lee Cattermole failed to make the Etihad trip due to a groin problem, Gus Poyet has confirmed.

Tottenham
Erik Lamela missed today’s stunning win over Chelsea with a minor calf complaint, whilst Ryan Mason limped off with a hamstring injury in the first period.

West Brom
Craig Gardner missed the Baggies 1-1 draw at West Ham with a calf problem, whilst fellow midfielder Graham Dorrans was subbed off through injury late on.

West Ham
The Hammers have concerns over today’s scorer Diafra Sakho, who was forced off with a recurrence of a back problem. The Senegal striker will be hoping to recover in time to fly off on international duties in the African Cup of Nations next week.

“We have to have a scan on it and see what condition his back is in. Obviously it’s a similar situation to when he last came back from [international duty with] Senegal, so on Friday the lads will send him for a scan and we’ll see how it goes from there”

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Who is more of a priority to get rid off?

    A) Baines - Can't get any points
    B) Zabaleta - Fixtures turn and loves to score 0
    C) Rangel - Tough fixtures for Swansea, not 100% nailed

Other two defenders are Dummett and Hutton.

Would say Baines. A drain on resources. Zaba will eventually come good when City become more solid when Kompany returns.

Went for Lescott as Baines replacement. Probably most nailed-on defender under Pulis and big-goal threat.

    Thoughts, used my FT already.
    Foster (Guzan)
    Lescott Zaba Azpi (O'Shea Yun)
    Sterling Silva Sanchez Hazard (Boyd)
    Benteke Rooney Austin

Can't find a way to get Boyd into XI.

I have him and i'm tempted to keep until the LIV game. He always finds the net against them and historical performance is very important in this game.

How's this guys for my WC team?

    de Gea (Hamer)
    Cresswell - Terry - Zabaleta/Skrtel (Hutton, B.Davies)
Sanchez - Silva - Hazard - Sterling (Boyd)
    Kane - Costa - Jovetic

I know it's a bit daft playing it this early but i've ground to make up in my ML.
Allows me to get Aguero in quite easily with a downgrade from Sterling etc.

    Comments greatly appreciated.

For those flocking to buy Kane remember SiB = Goals...
And, over the last 6 games Kane's only managed 11 shots from inside the area.
In contrast, Austin, Benteke, Pelle & Costa have all bested 16 shots from close range.

I'm from Toronto myself but, got into the FPL through mates of mine when I was living in Austraila. (Long story)

Anyway, best of luck to you & a speedy return for your boy Walcott! I'm not a red but, he's too much fun not to have in the game.

        Flynn, seriously?
        You're better than this!

If a player is converting at a rate higher than their career average we'll suspect a regression to the mean, yeah?

You're not insinuating that Kane will manage 5 goals every 11 SiB are you?

        I mean, Kane's had 6 SoT & converted 5 of them...
An 84% conversion rate in almost double what RVP or Aguero managed in their best seasons.

Well, Kane's also behind or just tied with those other players in Pen Area Touches & SoT as well if that's what you're after?

But, I'd love to hear some more about the *other stats* you feel correlate best to determining who'll most likely score us some goals?

You don't even have to look to know he ain't worth the $ this year! (or last for that matter...)

He's the RVP price of 3 years ago & putting up Bony & Rooney numbers.

stats are hit and miss. You need to watch the matches to understand the quality of a player and his points potential. Stats are misleading.

            No stats are stats.
            Conversion rates are conversion rates.

It's us humans who assign oddball patterns to them & then explain them away through confirmation bias & trusting our *gut*.

            Henderson's your biggest worry, right?
He gets rotated & they've had him play at wing back recently too.
Not like before when he could bomb forward from CM.

I hope Mirallas is out for a bit again b/c I'd like to buy Baines for the Jan WC.

As for RVP, Utd have a nice run at the end of the month but, I think ADM, Falcao & Rooney are better value for money.

      Stats are all relative.

Sterling hits big numbers but couldn't hit donkeys ass with a banjo.

Kane looked like an assassin vs Chelsea.

The last 3 weeks, i've dropped from 47k to 320k in rankings because i followed some know-it-all FPL guru, who relies heavily on stats. Never again, no substitute for an eye for a player IMO.

        > Stats are all relative.

What? This makes no sense?! The numbers are the numbers... that's why their numbers.
I didn't pull out some wacky off the wall idea here.
SiB correlate directly to a player's ability to score goals.
        Fact.

        > Sterling hits big numbers but couldn't hit donkeys ass with a banjo.

        > Kane looked like an assassin vs Chelsea.

Exactly, & in a few weeks time the numbers will even this out.
Kane ain't converting 80%+ of his SoT for the rest of the year.
I'll bet $1000 to your $100 if you'd like to take that action? 🙂

I get that the higher your conversion rate the more goals you'll tend to score but, taking those shots from inside the box is the root of being able to slot those goals home.

        SiB = Goals
        http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/8118/

Notice a pretty simple pattern here? 🙂

        1. Caffeinatedsteve

I agree with you 90%, just pointing out that's half the equation. SiB is important and probably the primary indicator, but it's SiB * Conv Rate = Goals 😉

I don't think you can assume a single fixed conversion rate for shots in box for all strikers, all year, though:
          - players have different natural levels (take maybe Aguero vs. Welbeck as an example)
          - position in box, angle of delivery, pressure from defence all modify it
          - a striker's form can keep it elevated / subdued for a period before it reverts to their natural level

Do I think Kane will continue at that rate all season? Of course not. But having got him a couple of weeks ago, I'd be quite happy if it stays elevated (or even slightly reduces) for the next two easy fixtures before I WC 🙂 He'll easily be worth his price if that's the case

On the other hand, I think Sterling's finishing is just crap, so I don't see him reverting up and thus not interested in him until he proves otherwise (which will probably happen now I've gone and made this point...)

Oh, I think people felt I was saying Kane was a dog & that's not it at all.

11 SiB is still Top 10 production.
His sched is still very favourable.
If I had him, I keep him gladly...

Heck, I might even buy him during the Jan WC!
At that price, you couldn't ask for much more.

Overall, I think that people are thinking that Benteke is somehow not producing but, his underlying stats say otherwise.

Much like Kane can have a stretch where he converts at an unststainable 80% clip; Benteke can go through a stretch where he's just not getting the *luck*...

            1. Caffeinatedsteve
              • 9 Years
              9 years, 4 months ago

              Yeah, makes sense.

Question then is why Benteke is so low... just bad luck or Villa struggling to create the right chances for him? I don't watch enough to know. Almost went for him instead of Kane, keeping an eye on him for WC in case he does come good

Well, I'd never argue that AVL don't struggle for goals in general.
Although, a lot of that was due to Benteke being out injured / suspended.
Not to mention the other two RC's that the AVL suffered in the past few matches taking them down to 10 men.

In the end though, it's a million things that all come together & determine if you score or you don't.

Just the nature of variance / luck means you can have a run like Kane's where you bang in 5 of 6 shots or a poor streak like Benteke where you managed to hit the woodwork 3 or 4 times in as many matches.

By the end of the year, it should all even out for both of them...

Sorry, there's never just an answer, yeah?
(Shades of grey & probabilities is what it boils down to)

So, my *point* (if I even have one) is that if you're rushing to get Kane you may want to think again b/c the strikers you have may be doing just as good a job at the moment but, simply not managing to convert their chances.

In the end, if you've got a more pressing issue to address then I'd say fix it first... but, if you've got Bony up top then Kane's an excellent choice.

      Hamer
      Zab Azpi Wisdom
      Sanchez Hazard(c) Silva Sterling
      Costa Austin Kane
      Hart Evans Saylor Isgrove

1FT and 3.2 mil in the bank. I already did Kane (Contrary to your belief) in for Bony....

To begin, thanks for the kind words.

Next, Kane to Bony's a great move!
Bony's leaving for the ACoN & despite what I may have sounded like I don't *dislike* Kane... In fact, he's amazing value.

I just wanted to point out that the strikers a lot of us have are doing equally as well in the underlying stats dept. (SiB = Goals) but, just not managing to convert their chances like Kane is atm.

Your team looks pretty darn good though... I'd be happy to run with it until you use your Jan WC.

(PS. I think Utd & WBA defenders will be sneaky good in the 2nd half of the year & I've got my eye on Wisdom & Evans too 🙂 )
