Scout Notes – Gameweek 22 – Sunday

Santi Cazorla bags a goal and assist as Arsenal emerge victorious from the Etihad. Olivier Giroud also finds the net, whilst the Gunners’ defence keep Sergio Aguero at bay with a second successive shut-out. Earlier in the day, Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing are amongst the goals as West Ham register a comprehensive win over struggling Hull.

Cazorla Steers Gunners to Victory

The little Spaniard stole the show in yesterday’s stunning win at the Etihad by bagging a goal and assist in the 2-0 triumph. Whilst Alexis Sanchez had a rare off-day, Cazorla’s form continues to suggest he offers a viable double-up option alongside the Chilean in our starting line-ups – he’s now racked up five goals, two assists and 11 bonus points in his last eight appearances. Owned by just 3% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, the 8.2-priced playmaker has home clashes against Villa, Leicester and Everton, allied with trips to Palace and QPR in the next six, as the schedule smiles kindly on Arsene Wenger’s side.

Elsewhere in the Gunners attack, Olivier Giroud notched a fourth goal in five appearances to also come into contention ahead of the aforementioned run of fixtures. Also setting us back 8.2, the Frenchman is very much in the differential bracket, too – sitting in just 4% of FPL teams, he’s another who’s sure to come in for increased investment as Wildcards are wielded over the fortnight’s break from league action.

Arsenal Defence on the Up

It’s two clean sheets in as many matches for the north London side after nullifying the threat of Sergio Aguero and co. Given that last week’s home shut-out against Stoke was the Gunners’ first in seven attempts, little was expected from their defenders ahead of the Etihad visit but yesterday’s resilient display is sure to bring their backline onto our radars. With Mathieu Debuchy ruled out for three months, Wenger’s decision to select Hector Bellerin ahead of Calum Chambers at right-back is sure to pique our interest – at 4.4, he could be a real bargain if he can keep ahead of the summer signing, though David Ospina, at 4.8, also looks an option after getting the nod between the posts once again.

City Struggles in Toure’s Absence

With Vincent Kompany and Sergio Aguero back in the starting XI, much was expected of the champions – over 187,000 FPL managers drafted in the Argentine prior to the weekend deadline but his owners picked up no more than a single point, after he earned a late yellow card. Bearing in mind that City now travel to Stamford Bridge when league action resumes in two weeks’ time, the bandwagon may be temporarily slowed down until Gameweek 24. From that point on, Manuel Pellegrini’s troops host Hull, Newcastle and Leicester and also travel to Stoke and Burnley – by then, Aguero’s match sharpness will be fully up to speed and few will be willing to go without over such an enticing stretch of fixtures.

The champions have now failed to win any of their four league matches without Yaya Toure this season. Worryingly for Pellegrini, if the midfielder and new Etihad team-mate Wilfried Bony reach the Africa Cup of Nations final on February 8, they would likely miss the next three league matches, given that the Gameweek 25 trip to Stoke is on February 11.

Carroll and Downing Deliver

Sam Allardyce started with a 4-2-3-1 for yesterday’s clash against Hull, with Andy Carroll leading the line and Stewart Downing tucked in behind. A half-time switch to a midfield diamond saw the pair grab a goal apiece in an easy 3-0 win over the struggling Tigers – Carroll now has five strikes in his last eight, whilst Downing’s efforts took his tally to three goals and a pair of assists over the same period. Downing has now climbed into fourth spot in the FPL midfield standings on 116 points. but with showdowns against Liverpool, United, Southampton, Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal in the next seven Gameweeks, it remains to be seen how many of his 26% owners will keep the faith.

Tigers Toil Again

West Ham went into yesterday’s encounter with just a single clean sheet in the previous eight. With both their main forwards sidelined through injury, though, Hull were unable to take advantage of their hosts’ poor defensive form and drew yet another blank – alarmingly for Steve Bruce, his side have now failed to score in six of the last eight Gameweeks. Still stuck in the drop zone, Hull now have three vital home encounters (NEW, AVL, QPR) against sides in the bottom half of the table to boost their survival plight. Sone Aluko – classified as a midfielder in FPL and priced at 4.6 – led the line at Upton Park after recovering from a calf complaint and could offer Fantasy managers an out-of-position prospect, for those who believe Bruce’s side can profit from those upcoming matches.

    de Gea // Foster

    Terry // Cresswell // Caulker // Williams // Chambers

What changes would you make to this defence in the wildcard?

    I was thinking Caulker // Williams // Chambers > Bellerin // Bertand // PvA

Keep de Gea based on fixtures and downgrade Foster?

That would give a nice defence.
Presumably Cresswell would be benched over the next 6 games due to nightmare-ish fixtures - so why not downgrade to an ultra cheap bench fodder and use the money somewhere else.

If you can afford it I think Ivanovic will out-score Terry over the season.

I've had Terry + Ivanovic for ages and it's probably the hardest decision of the wildcard for him which to drop.

  3. Costa with aguero = what midfield?

    Top 5, top fixtures.

City and Chelsea get out of the traps a little slow fixture wise over this coming period, simply as they face each other next game week.
I realise this is treading on the toes of frisking the fixtures; the strong a little, but I am not focusing on any teams outside the top 5, Sunderland have good fixtures for example.

As many of us Wild Card, we have been reminded of Costa's appeal, and for some, a little too late. Many tactics will have suddenly changed from a thinking of Kun upfront with 2 relative cheapie such as Kane and and Austin, (quite a wrestling tag team) to Kun and Costa with a cheapie and a mix up in midfield.

For those going for the big two upfront, you will inevitably have to lose a big hitter in midfield, unless you go for an uber defence. But who do we lose?

    Arsenal: AVL-tot-LEI-cpl-EVE-qpr
Sanchez is bang in form, and it would be almost unthinkable to drop him, but what about Cazorla? On Sunday afternoon he turned in a magical performance. He played centrally and ran the show; going on that I can see him keeping his place in the side and at 8.2m represents great value.

    Man Utd: LEI-whm-BUR-swa-SUN-new
3 plum home games and 3 ok away could see ADM rocket up the score board, but not if LVG plays him where he has been. I can't see him staying in that position, but he has frustrated over the last two.
Would he be one to consider dropping for those Wild Carding in the last week if he blanks against Leicester?

    Man City: che-HUL-sto-NEW-liv-LEI
Looking at the away fixtures here I could see Silva being one of the main candidates for being dropped. However it is very likely that City will seriously punish their home opponents, meaning Silva could be on for a few assists. It is also worth noting that they have their friendly run continue after these 6 games with bur-WBA-cpl by which point they will probably be very high on confidence.

    Chelsea: MCI-avl-EVE-BUR-lei-whm
Hazard's scoring form has dipped but it would very unwise getting rid of such an explosive proven PL player. He always seems to come good and he's just one of those season keepers.
Cesc ticks along as usual but very rarely chips in with something special points wise. In his last 9 games he has returned: 3,3,6,14,3,6,4,3,6 at an average of 5.33. Easily bettered by Silva (7.14) in just 7 games, although that is manipulated by his playing position over the Christmas period.

    Southampton: SWA-qpr-WHM-LIV-wba-CPL.
Everyone's little darling of the PL, Southampton have come through incredibly tough fixtures (which now face West Ham) still smiling and sitting pretty in third. 4 home games coming up in 6 and infact only face 2 really tough games until the end, I feel this is the team to invest in, somewhere.
Elia has just grabbed a somewhat lucky brace, I'm not sure thats quite enough to place our faith in normal circumstances, but to facilitate the frontline previously mentioned, he could be quite useful. Its just a shame the likes of Mane are injured and Tadic is too expensive.

So of Silva, Sanchez, Cazorla, Hazard, Fab, and ADM, which 3 are you keeping

I'll be going without ManU or Silva as I don't think they're consistent enough. Fabregas is but doesn't score enough goals for me to reconsider Terry/Hazard/Costa as my Chelsea. My mids will be Hazard, Sanchez, Puncheon, uber cheapie, and then undecided on last. Can afford up to 9.9m and am leaning towards Cazorla or Sterling with money ITB.

The other related factor is the investment made in one's defense. There seems to be competing strategies of 2 vs. 3 expensive defenders. With only 2 pricey defenders, one can more easily have Costa & Kun while also fielding 3 pricey mids.

I wc last week, and went with a strategy of 1 pricey forward (Kun), and 3 pricey mids and 3 pricey defenders. One week in, I am now faced with sticking or reconfiguring to have 2 pricey mids and 2 pricey forwards (Kun & Costa(.

Yes, Rupert (excellent article, thank you). Silva at Chelsea does not feel promising.

I do not like to reconfigure, and taking hits after doing a wc seems foolish, but if I move Silva, I may just go all out and using a trading floor mentality, cut my losses, get out of this position, and fix my team (as opposed to merely going Silva > Cazorla, for example).

      I've gone:
      2 x cheap keepers rotating;
      2 big (ish) defenders & 3 cheap rotating;
      Front 8 of:
      Fabregas, Sanchez, ADM, Downing (Boyd)
      Kane, Costa, Kun.

      And 1.1m in the bank.
Easy, no? Only dilemma now is whether to ship Downing or not.

Aguero, Costa and Kane for me. With Sanchez also a shoe-in, you have the three top scorers in the league. Kane I was lucky to get at 4.9m, so he is a no brainer to keep and obviously free's up value on having Eriksen.

I'm forsaking Utd attacking cover as the players are just too dear for hit and miss returns. I had RVP in between Aguero injuries and he did ok but not worth the money. I was going to sell Sterling to get ADM but have decided to stick now. With Fabianski's good run seemingly coming to an end, and Jonny Evans getting subbed on Saturday, I've decided to go with DDG in goal to cover what is now the third best defence in the league! Evans is now my last question mark, maybe Chambers will comeback who I sold for Debuchy only a few weeks ago!? Wisdom and Hutton rotate obviously for the third starting spot. Happy with that.

      Bertrand EVANS Wisdom Hutton Waswielski

Strongly advise against this. Ozil will steal a good deal of Cazorla's thunder (if not some pitch time too). Whereas Alexis is undroppable and plays consistently plays further forward.
Also Arsenal won't get penalties every game, or score from set plays every game!

In open play (FPL bread and butter): Alexis > Cazorla - by loads

If you're happy to play high risk and be without a 90% owned player in the top 10k who will likely be the most captained player two of the next three GWs. It's pretty easy to fit Sanchez, Hazard, Costa, Aguero, and Cazorla into a team.

Its very interesting. The problem is thats its just so risky. Cazorla has done everything in his power to not get benched, but with so much talent arriving back, its hard to see him not. Sanchez is Arsenal's best player, although on current form, Santi is running him close. I am considering both.

Can I get away without WC-ing this week with this team? On 7k. Have a FT and 2.5 itB to do any transfer that might be needed.

    Guzan / 4.0
    Terry / A.Bruce / Hutton / Naylor / Vergini
Silva / Hazard / Sanchez / Di Maria / Boyd
    Costa / Austin / Kane.

I have a really weak TV so I don't want too many rises, basically I want to avoid WC-ing but I might be forced to so that my selling value can stay somewhat ok.

Possible WC team, any thoughts welcome

    Panti Krul
    Terry Bertrand Wisdom Hutton Duff
    Sanchez Hazard Fabregas Downing Elia
    Aguero Austin Kane

Going to rotate Wisdom, Hutton and Duff accordingly and play Elia/Downing ahead of Austin when QPR are away

Good point, I would ideally keep 2 transfers rolling each week in the event of an Aguero injury. The I could swap Costa in and Fab out.

            • 10 Years
            9 years, 3 months ago

I have Kane in my team - only because he's good value right now. I don't know if he'll be a future star yet - we'll know in some time. He's done well, but it's only been a short period of time.

Giroud has 6 goals in 11 appearances this season (4 as a sub). That's fantastic.

He had 16 goals, 8 assists last season. 11 goals, 3 assists before that (he came off the bench a fair bit). Before that he was the top scorer in Ligue 1.

Suffice to say, Giroud is a consistent performer who seems to get better with each passing season. If I could afford him over Kane or Austin, I'd take him in a second.

Awful gameweek, and worse knowing that I could have easily afforded to wait on Kun as still have .4 mil in the bank after shipping Cost for him.

Any reason to panic though with this team?

    -----------------------------------Pants--------------------------------------
    ------------------------ Terry PvA Bertrand--------------------------
    -------------------Sanchez Hazard ADM Siggy----------------
    ------------------------- Giroud Aguero Kane --------------------------

    Subs: Mannonne, Lescott, Boyd, Hutton

    0.4 ITB.

Thinking of using the freebie to do Siggy --> Puncheon, then in a few weeks shipping ADM to Fabregas. Which of course, leaves me with no Costa... seems unwise.
