Moving Target

Moving Target – Wilfried Bony

Manchester City bolstered their forward options last week by snapping up Wilfried Bony from Swansea City. Arriving for a reported fee of £28m, the 26-year-old has signed a four-and-a-half year contract for the champions and will be available for selection once his Africa Cup of Nations commitments with Ivory Coast come to an end.

Manuel Pellegrini took time out to discuss his swoop with the club’s official website and cited Bony’s excellent record in the Premier League as one of the key reasons for his acquisition:

“He is very difficult to mark because he is so strong. He is an intelligent footballer who has skill and power. His goals record has been excellent since he came to England. He adapted very quickly to the game here and I think he will settle in at City quickly. He will be a very good addition to our squad. We now have four top-class strikers and I am looking forward to seeing them work together.”

The History

Bony’s career got underway in 2006 with Ivory Coast outfit Issia Wazi. Having failed a trial at Liverpool a year later, the target man made his way to Czech club Sparta Prague, where he racked up 22 goals and five assists in 59 league matches, in addition to scoring 11 times in 20 European matches.

The Ivorian was on his travels midway through the 2010/11 season after being snapped up by Vitesse Arnhem. Bony netted just three times in seven appearances over the first few months but, after establishing himself as a first-team regular the following year, he bagged 17 goals and eight assists from 32 league and play-off matches and followed that up with an eye-catching 31 goals and eight assists from 30 league matches in 2012/13.

Bony’s exploits in the Eredivisie persuaded Swansea to shell out a club record £12m fee for his services in July 2013 and he wasted little time in settling at the Liberty. The Ivorian bagged 26 goals across all competitions for the Welsh club last year, producing 17 goals and four assists in the Premier League, before going on to deliver nine strikes and a pair of assists in 20 top-flight appearances this time around. On the international stage, the 26-year-old has also appeared 32 times for the Ivory Coast and found the net on 11 occasions.

The Prospects

As we’ve seen so often in the past, a move to the Etihad can sound the death knell for many a player’s Fantasy fortunes and in spite of his goal-getting abilities, the jury is out on whether Bony’s career at City will prove worthy of our consideration.

At Swansea, he was the first-choice forward in a lone striker system, providing the power, movement and guile to lead the line with devastating effect – no other player matched Bony’s 20 goals over the 2014 calendar year. In all likelihood, City’s embarrassment of riches up front should allow Pellegrini to roll out his preferred 4-2-2-2 on a regular basis but with Sergio Aguero an automatic pick, Bony is set to battle it out with Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic for pitch time alongside the Argentine.

With a starting role looking far from certain, the Ivorian’s prospects are also dented by a likely lack of spot-kicks. Five of Bony’s league goals for the Swans were converted penalties but, again, you’d expect Aguero to remain at the top of the pecking order, whilst Yaya Toure could hold onto his role as back-up option, leaving his compatriot out of the running.

What may fall in Bony’s favour, though, is his ability to steer clear of injury. On too many occasions over the past couple of years, City have had at least one forward sidelined through one problem or the other – with all three unavailable last month, Pellegrini was forced into adopting a false nine system to cope. Given that Jovetic and Dzeko have managed just over 1,300 minutes between them, there’s hope that Bony could benefit if he can steer clear of the treatment room – City have produced the highest number of attempts on goal this season and, when on the pitch, there’s no doubt he’ll be supplied with chances aplenty.

With doubts over his minutes, though, it’s a case of “wait and see” with this one. Depending on his nation’s progress in the Africa Cup of Nations, Bony may not be back on domestic duties until Gameweek 26, allowing us to build our Wildcard squads and assess the Etihad situation at a later date. Providing Aguero can keep fit, though, it’s difficult to see how the new boy will surpass the Argentine as our favoured City striker of choice in spite of a far more budget-friendly price tag.

From a Swansea perspective, Bony’s move currently puts the 6.5-priced Bafetimbi Gomis in the driving seat as the lone striker. With one goal to his name, though, the Frenchman has failed to replicate his predecessor’s clinical strike rate, whilst his weekend television interview – hinting at broken promises from the Swans hierarchy – hardly suggests all is well. It may well be that Garry Monk turns to loan signing Nelson Oliveira to solve his dilemma up top, then, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson owners will be hoping the Icelandic international can take over spot-kick duties as a result of the Ivorian’s departure.

Shoe ins for the wildcard are Eden Hazard, Alexis Sanchez, Diego Costa, Sergio Aguero, Chelsea defender (John Terry), Southampton defender (Ryan Bertrand), West Brom defender (Andre Wisdom), George Boyd

Working around that, it starts to get difficult. I've got Harry Kane in the final striker spot, then Raheem Sterling I may persevere with given his advanced position, potential value and (relative) differential status.

Whilst it is quiet, I thought I would look at the DGW possibilities as I am seeing regular comments about 'saving my original wildcard for a DGW'

So far, every team has played 22 games, there has not been a single postponement so far this year. Last year we had postponements due to bad weather, tube strikes and the Super Cup. The weather usually gets milder in February and so the chances reduce further of postponements.

We know that the League Cup will definitely create a DGW as the final will take place on 1st March. The fixtures from that weekend cannot be rescheduled the same GW as there is a full PL schedule on 3rd and 4th March. The fixtures that may be affected are Leicester v Chelsea or Liverpool v Man City plus most likely QPR v Spurs (if Spurs beat Sheffield Utd over 2 legs), We will know this next week although probably won't find out any revised dates for a while especially if any of the finalists have any European commitments.

So what about the FA Cup ? Well in previous seasons we have had a plethora of DGW fixtures generated from this cup competition as usually PL clubs have PL games scheduled on last 16 dates.

This year though the dates are as follows.

Last 32 - Sat 24th Jan (no PL fixtures)
Last 16 - Sat 14th Feb (no PL fixtures)
Last 8 - Sat 8th March (no PL fixtures)
Last 4 - Sat 18th April (full PL programme however there are no midweek games scheduled following that weekend and so it is likely any games could just be moved by 3 days into the same Gameweek still)

The only complexities may arise if any PL teams need a FA cup replay but cannot find a date due to European commitments as FA cup games will usually take priority over league fixtures.

So in summary, I would sadly suggest that those still holding their original wildcard for a double GW are likely to be disappointed as I cannot see too many forthcoming right now this year. Sorry 🙂

I think there were 3 games moved last year because of weather and tube strikes. But the lack of any 6th FA cup clash of fixtures is more troublesome. On the upside, with masses of DGW you don't need a WC to get in players because so many teams have two games. With fewer DGW matches, teams won't adapt to much leaving the WC as a more flexible way of getting the right players.

I don't think FA Cup semifinalists will have their GW33 matches moved to that midweek since there's CL quarterfinals then. It would be rearranged to either GW34 or 37 as part of a DGW.

      Rearranged matches last season (2013-14):
1 match brought forward because of UEFA Super Cup.
2 unexpected late postponements in GW26 because of high winds.
2 matches postponed because of League Cup Final in GW28.
5 matches postponed because of FA Cup 6th round in GW29.
1 match postponed because of FA Cup semi-final in GW34.

The postponement due to the London Underground industrial action was the previous season (2012-13), and there have not been any clashes with the FA Cup 5th round (last 16) in recent seasons)

But as you say, there are likely to be far fewer changes this season, because there is no clash with the FA Cup 6th round (last 8). So, whereas last season it was good to save your main wildcard for a late DGW, this season it was probably better to play it earlier (unless you had such a good initial squad that you didn't need to!).

this is terrible news. In theory there could only be one, at most two DGWs? And that involving Chelsea who even dead teams have three players from.

I always use them to climb my mini leagues but this is a real step back. Mixed emotions about the weather in Feb now. I really want some postponements and DGWs. But on the other hand, my builders really need to hurry up and finish my house...

Regarding the FA Cup Last 4:

If 2 of Man City, Arsenal and Chelsea progress into the last16 of the Champions League the no top flight domestic football can happen on Tuesday or Wednesday, similarly if one of our teams goes through in the Europa then no top flight domestic football can occur on the Thursday.

There is a slight possibility that these games could be rearranged to Monday night but it is more than likely that they will get moved to a DGW instead.

How has your season gone so far?
What bad decisions have cost you a higher rank?

    For me it was:
    1. Not captaining Costa earlier in the season
    2. Not getting Sanchez in quick enough
    3. Persisting with Sterling for so long
    4. Having had vice captains with big hauls these last two weeks (Sanchez vs. Stoke and Costa vs. Swansea)

Better start compared to usual. Usually ranked about 150kish about now.

      1. Never having costa at all especially early on
      2. Probably could've had Sanchez a little sooner
      3. VC Austin for his hatrick when I had him capt all week (maybe some other VC's too)
      4. The benching of Kane vs Chelsea!

It looked very good, up at 1,000 earlier than I have been before, then I have had a streak of really rough luck + some bad decisions, sending me all the way down to 30K.

Selling Costa (C) for Aguero (C) last week was one of the worst

    3. FPL Blow-In
      • 11 Years

Selling rooney C for his brace to Giroud C for his RC was bad. Taking hits to get teams that done worse than my original has happened a few times

My last four captains and bench have cost me loads. No serious regrets though. Bit late getting Sterling, ADM and Sanchez early in the season. A few unsuccessful punts on Benteke, Bony etc. All par for the course though.

1.Not getting Aguerro soon enough and missed his 4 goals not wanting to take a hit.
      2. Not owning a Sot defender.
      3. Trading out Costa > Kun last GW in a rash move because of #1^.

Best Season so far, dipped into the top 100k for a good couple of weeks.

      1. It took too long for me to sort out my third Striker slot
      2. Kept certain defenders in my side too long.
      3. Tom Ince at the beginning of the season.

      1. Bottling Berahino on opening day (going for Bojan), when he scored a brace
      2. Being a little slow not getting on the Sanchez bandwagon
      3. Not getting on the Downing bandwagon at all
      4. Signing Giroud and captaining him the week he got a red for a head butt (while all my other big players hot double figures!)
      5. Benching Kane against Chelsea!!
      6. Having too many Captainable players and frequently selecting the wrong one

This sounds like I've had a disaster of a season, but I'm not doing too bad. Could be flying though!!

E if you're looking a value defender. Sakho, and particularly Moreno in his midfield role are great value at just over 5M. Liverpool are on the up (must declare that I'm biased)

Just contemplating the chances. I'd say both teams conceding two weeks in succession is around 20%. For weeks would be 4% which is just plain unlucky. Of course, if Baird owners are getting 6pts while I'm spending 6m for the same score, I'll be feeling sour. As it is, the controversial plan is still only in it's formative stage. It might never take wing.

Does anyone think punting on defoe is too much of a risk when kane is cheaper??

    1. Wolverine
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member
      • 14 Years

Not at all. Defoe focal to the attack, possibly on pens.

Kane has a good chance of being the link between the mid and strikers (second striker).

It's a risk in the sense that if Kane does well and you don't have him, your rank will suffer as he's owned by a lot of teams. However, go with your instinct
