Champions League 2014/15 – Fantasy iTeam Matchday 9 Picks

We’re now just a few hours away from the start of this season’s Champions League quarter-finals. Once again, we assess the Fantasy iTeam (FiT) Player Price List and assess some of the form players on offer ahead of Matchday 9’s deadline.

A free Fantasy football app, FiT is available on a number of mobile devices, including iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Android. Fantasy managers have until 10 minutes before the first kick-off in any given Matchday to make any final alterations to their starting XIs – this evening, then, that deadline is 7.35pm, ahead of Atletico and Real’s Madrid derby and Juventus’ home encounter with Arsenal’s conquerors, Monaco.

We’re supporting FiT throughout the competition and have an official Fantasy Football Scout League, with an iPad mini available to the winner. There’s also a VIP European Match Day Experience for two on offer for the overall winner of the Fantasy iTeam Champions League game.

Tuesday April 14

After scoring three goals in his last four outings, Antoine Griezmann now sits third top scorer in La Liga with 18 strikes to his name – only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have netted more. The Champions League has been a less fruitful endeavour for the France international – with two goals in seven encounters – yet his current form and Rojiblancos’ recent success against Real Madrid (a home win and away draw this term) render the 7.7-priced forward an enticing option for their quarter-final clash.

Beyond the obvious selection of Ronaldo (seven goals in last three starts), Karim Benzema (10.7) remains a strong route into Los Blancos’ frightening forward line for the Madrid derby. Among the players still left in the competition, only Ronaldo and Lionel Messi (eight each) have netted more than the Frenchman’s six. In his four most recent league starts, Benzema has notched two goals and assist and served as the perfect foil to his free-scoring Portuguese team-mate.

With four goals in his previous five starts in all competitions – including a brace against Borussia Dortmund in Juventus’ last Champions League outing – Carlos Tevez is the prime pick for The Old Lady’s head-to-head with Monaco. The Argentine leads the Serie A scoring charts (17 goals) and ranks third in the Champions League equivalent, yet can be snapped up for a relatively affordable 9.6. Locking horns with a Ligue 1 outfit that were comprehensively outclassed in their 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in the last round, Tevez is more than capable of troubling the scoresheet.

Priced at 4.5, Monaco’s Anthony Martial is a budget forward bursting with potential. The 19-year-old phenomenon has been unstoppable of late, registering six goals in five outings for the Ligue 1 club. Martial scored in every one of those fixtures and will be in jubilant spirits when he lines up on the left wing for Monaco’s trip to Turin. That being said, the fact that Juventus have recorded clean sheets in their last seven fixtures in all competitions makes him a left-field choice.

Wednesday April 15

Ricardo Quaresma (5.3) – who boasts three goals in his last two starts – is Porto’s form man ahead of their home leg against Bayern Munich. The Portuguese side face a tough task overhauling a Munich outfit that’s scored 15 and conceded two in their previous six matches in all competitions but Porto will be confident in scoring, having tallied eight in their last two matches. Quaresma played a bit-part role in their two-legged victory over Basel – clocking just 42 minutes of pitch time – but will surely be handed a start in light of his recent attacking returns.

Considering Munich have recorded clean sheets in all but one of their last six matches, their rearguard is certainly encouraging investment. Nonetheless, Robert Lewandowski’s five-goal haul in as many matches is too alluring to ignore. The Polish frontman will set you back a hefty 10.6 (0.8 more than Luis Suarez) but is undoubtedly in the midst of his best form since joining the Bundesliga champions, with nine strikes in their last eight league clashes.

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic suspended, Edison Cavani (8.9) will shoulder the responsibility of breaching Barcelona’s formidable defence. The Uruguayan is more than up to the challenge, though, having bagged a brace last time out against Bastia and netted six goals in this Champions League so far this campaign. Cavani is priced well below the going rate of a top-tier forward in the FiT league, freeing up funds for managers to bolster other areas of their squads.

Luis Suarez still looks a steal at a price of 9.8. The ex-Liverpool forward scored both goals in Barcelona’s first leg against Manchester City and looks well placed to test Salvatore Sirigu at the Parc des Princes, having recorded three goals in his last four starts for the Catalan club. Further strengthening Suarez’s case for inclusion, PSG have only shut out their opposition in one of their previous seven encounters in all competitions, shipping 11 goals in the process.

FANTASY FOOTBALL SCOUT LEAGUE

We’ve already set up an official Fantasy Football Scout league for you to join, with an iPad mini on offer to the winner – the league name is Fantasy Football Scout and the pin is 11155.

Last 3 games versus them at the Vicente Calderon, they were.

Keepers you have Buffon and Neuer, the most secure.
                Then its Oblak and Subasic.

For that price i would go Oblak. 4 CS in his last 5 games.

It’s likely that none of my 3 ‘benchers’; Ameobi, Baird and PvA will be playing GW33. As I also have Cazorla this leaves me with just 10 playing.

I already have my 3 Chelsea DGWers in place so thinking of taking a hit which will also release funds for three Liverpool in GW34:

    GW33 PVA > Toby & Cazorla > Henderson
    GW34 Eriksen > Sterling & Myhill > Mignolet

    Any suggestions most welcome
    Thanks

I don't see that hit for Toby paying off. Would just do Caz > Henderson and play with 10. If it's tactical in your mini league, ie spending points to block ML rivals...maybe that GW33 plan is ok. Otherwise I'd play with 10.

      GW34 plan sounds good

Okay. Thanks. Is it worth a -8 hit to bring in Sterling, Henderson & Skrtel?

        Currently have

        Panti/Hamer

        Toby/Terry/Cdawson/Bruce/Baird

        Alexis/Hazard/Silva/Chadli/Boyd

        Kun/Kane/Giroud.

Debating A) Giroud-> Murray, B)Giroud-> Remy or C> Alexis to Fabregas this week

        1. Shifty
          • 10 Years

The long term option would be K Davies. I suspect he will eventually make those points over Panti but taking a 12 pt hit in 2 weeks seems crazy!

I do that goalie tactic sometimes and it rarely works out for me. I was tempted to get Mignolet in last week for a hit which would have paid for itself straight away but I bottled it. I think I've had about 8 different keepers this season!
If you think it'll work then do it.

Wanted to write this just now in Heathrow but didn't have the chance (in Amsterdam now awaiting my flight back to Singapore!)

Anyways, I'll like to take the opportunity to thank several members of the community who has helped me in the past few weeks as I was planning to watch my first ever EPL game! Needless to say, without their help and guidance I would have found it tough to figure my way out with the tickets and the match day info! Special thanks to Guidinho, ANDY85SJK 42, Ruth_NZ and the many others that has helped out! Special thanks to Innsie and others who gave me advice for my team as I didn't have proper time to really fix my team! I know I missed out quite a few names but I don't thank the rest for helping!

Really appreciate all the help from the community, even for matters that are not related to FPL! Hope to come back to UK when I'm older to watch another game! This has really been a once in a lifetime experience.

Terry or Ivanovic for the DGW?

The extra 0.8m could let me do Kane > Benteke (if I have the balls to do it) and punt on a strong end to the season for Villa.

    Current GW34 WC draft

    Ospina Myhill
    Ivan* Skrtel* Clyne Alde PVA
    Hazard* Fabregas* Sterling* Henderson* fodder
    Kun Giroud Kane

Like the look of reverting to this front 3 (or with Benteke instead of Kane) on WC.

Would have Giroud, Ospina, PVA readyfor GW37 double.

If you are in a WC why not Kaspar instead of Myhill? Wba fixtures do turn ugly. Other than that the team looks solid tbh! I plan to have a somewhat similar team other than the front line which would be Kun Vardy N'doye with money to make the Giroud change the following week.

I would go with Terry. Cheaper though Ivanovic has a great assist threat.

Won't be playing Myhill from WC onwards. Happy to play Ospina til the end! Considered Schmikes as 2nd keeper - might still do it. Have to find 0.2m from somewhere though - hoping Giroud or Benteke drops 0.1 each by this weekend 🙂

That front line would be wayyy to punty for my liking haha. Also, I tend to try and save my FT right after WC. But that's my style!

Ah yes. I did realize now my strike force feels too lightweight and I don't need to make such changes if I just want to keep my position stable.. Have to rethink about that. Yeah I usually try to save a FT but with my suggestion that won't really work.

I forgot about Ospina fixtures till the end. I think they might actually drop 0.1m!

yea, btw just seen your rank - i dont think that front line is good enough to hold on to that lead or build on it tbh. wouldn't let DGW cloud judgement.

Yeah I did realize that. Guess I've to go back home and really revisit my team on my laptop and come up with a proper team for the game week. Thanks man! I just sold Giroud instead of Alexis so let's see how they plays off..

Sturridge is so injury prone I would be afraid to sleep with him if I was a woman.

    With that said;

    Heaton

    Clichy - Clyne - Ivanovic

    Hazard - Mané - Fellaini - Silva - Boyd

    Aguero (C) - Kane

    (Pantilimon - Sturridge - Naughton - Haidära)

    0.0 ITB 1 FT

    A) Save FT
    B) Mané -> Bolasie
    C) Mané & Naughton -> Someone & Someone?

So after new I'm ridding myself of Kane. Only way I can make up the 50 points on my mini league leader is to do something drastic. Think he'll trail off until next season. Opinions?

Why not. considering the same on my WC - though i'm leading my ML. Thinking of a Kun-Giroud-Benteke front 3 to see out the season barring injury.

Need to replace Naughton to field 11 this GW...I already have Terry and Haz for the DGW, so would you go with Ivanovic or Schlupp to replace Naughton? Is it more important to have Fab/Chelsea forward for the DGW? Thanks.

    So current team is :

    Myhill - (Panti)
Terry - Clyne - Dawson - Duff (Naughton)
    Boyd - Mata - Hazard - (Coutinho) - (Alexis)
    Kane - Murray - Aguero

    1FT. 0.0 ITB.

So, which of the plans do you think suits best. I am behind my league, no-one has WC and most people will have 5-6 DGWs.

    A) save FT. Then on DGW do :
    1 - Naughton to Moreno/Skrtel
    2 - Kane to Vardy
    3 - other move for -4?

    B) Do Alexis to Fab this GW and play 3-4-3 this GW.
Next week get in 1 liverpool defender.
Also get in either Vardy or another Liverpool mid (Henderson) and play 3-5-2 (benching kane vs Southampton)

    What do you think?

A3 - Naughton to Skrtel, Mata to Henderson. I think Henderson is a crucial player for the DGW - set pieces, pens, captain responsibility etc...
