EURO 2015 UNDER 21 – GUIDE TO THE MCDONALD’S GAME

Beyond scrutinising a smattering of Premier League transfers, Fantasy enthusiasts have been resigned to twiddling their thumbs since the 2014/15 campaign shut up shop. That’s set to change with the imminent U21 European Championship and its associated McDonald’s game, presenting a perfect stop-gap before next season’s player lists are unveiled and the first drafts begin in earnest.

Our first article on the tournament focuses on the rule set before we cast an eye over the player price list in the coming days.

This year’s iteration of the youth tournament kicks off on Wednesday June 17 and runs until June 30, with eight teams duking it out across four venues. The most popular player in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) last term, Harry Kane, will spearhead England’s assault on the crown, highlighting the tournament’s scouting appeal. For those keen on sharpening their Fantasy skills over the close season, here’s a rundown of what to expect.

SQUAD SELECTION

Akin to the rules regarding squad composition in the FPL, 15-man squads are comprised of two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders and three forwards. In the group stages, just three players per team can be selected, but this figure increases to six (semi-finals) and then nine (final) as the tournament progresses.

A budget of €100 million is afforded to each manager at the offset, with an additional €5 million added to the kitty after the group stages. Like in the FPL, player prices change in response to the scale of their ownerships, ensuring management of funds is crucial to extracting the most value. The total number of formations you can employ (eight) is limited by the fact that a minimum of three defenders must be fielded.

SUBSTITUTIONS

Substitutions come in two distinct flavours: manager or automatic. The latter relies on the “priority” system that the FPL practices, whereas manager substitutions allow you to be proactive and tinker with your squad while the Matchday is still in progress.

With the first three Matchdays (group stages) split into two fixtures on each day, unlimited manager substitutions are permitted upon the completion of the first day. Save for players that were shown a red card, you can replace anyone with a benched player that’s scheduled to feature the following afternoon. Ultimately, this system appears to promote stocking your bench with players involved in the second batch of fixtures, thus diversifying your options.

This same principle applies to captaincy (a nominated player that earns double points), engendering an added layer of nuance.

For example, if we select a skipper from the teams that play in Matchday 1 on the opening day of the tournament (Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany and Serbia) and they deliver a paltry points tally, we could shift the armband duty to another potential big-hitter that plays for a side in action on the second day (Italy, Sweden, England and Portugal). You’ll want to source captaincy candidates from both groups, then, doubling your chances of landing a top scorer.

SCORING POINTS

For those familiar with the principles that underpin the FPL game, this scoring system will feel second nature.

Points for goals are awarded in an identical fashion, with goalkeepers and defenders receiving six, midfielders earning five and forwards bagging four. A single point is awarded to any player who makes the pitch, while an additional point is reserved for those players that clock over 60 minutes in a match. Clean sheet points are also tallied in the same way, with goalkeepers and defenders carding four points for not conceding after playing at least 60 minutes, and midfielders registering a solitary point. To pore over the full rules breakdown, click here.

There are a few subtle deviations from its domestic cousin, however, with the awarding of assists being chief among them. Assists are also worth three points, yet a player who wins a free-kick or penalty that is eventually converted won’t be attributed one, as outlined by the rules:

A player will be credited with a ‘goal assist’ when he delivers/plays the final pass, cross, header or shot, which leads to the goal being scored. This will also apply to set plays (i.e. corner, free kick, throw-in etc.). In addition, An attempt, which rebounds from the goal frame, the goalkeeper or a defender, can be considered as an assist, if it leads directly to a goal. When a pass, shot or cross by an attacker contributes to an own goal, an assist can be awarded to the attacker. Only one player can be credited with an assist per goal scored. No assist is awarded to a player winning a penalty or a free kick. No assist is given to a player who creates his own goalscoring opportunity (i.e. solo run/dribble).

Among the other key differences from the FPL, one point is awarded when a player wins a penalty, and one point is deducted from the player that concedes the penalty – regardless of whether the spot-kick is scored. Points continue to be calculated during extra time, yet saves and goals during penalty shoot-outs are not included.

TRANSFERS

Managers are equipped with two free transfers prior to Matchday 2 and 3, with any further transfers deducting two points of your overall score. In appreciation of the halved pool of players in each subsequent Matchday, six free transfers are on offer prior to the semi-final and finals. As with the FPL, one free transfer rolls over to the next round if you don’t take advantage of your full quota. There are no price rises or falls, however; player valuations remain static over the entirety of the tournament, regardless of changes in ownership.

Notwithstanding the bite-sized nature of the tournament, each Fantasy manger enjoys the luxury of a wildcard, which grants unlimited transfers without points deductions prior to one Matchday. In terms of optimum strategies, most will want to activate it during the group stages, given the large number of free transfers available in the knockout rounds. Composing a team specifically intended to score big on Matchday 1 – with a view to activating the wildcard immediately after – has its merits; yet some might prefer to hold off until the landscape is clearer in the wake of Matchday 1, particularly when all but the most ardent football fans will have had limited exposure to the majority of the starlets on show.

SCOUT LEAGUE

We’ve set up an official FFScout league for those looking to get involved – the code is 2370146-686520.

This code and link to the game is also available in the middle column of the homepage.

I really recommend people giving this a try! I signed up on the last tournament and really enjoyed it. That tournament in particular was very enjoyable for me with Norway actually putting up a good fight. In addition both Spain, Italy and Netherlands had great squads.

Some of the big nations seem to be lacking this year, and I still have a week left to finish my thesis, so I won't be joining this year. But for all you others, go ahead 😉

I remember building up the talent of the young Norwegian back Hedenstad, even showing a youtube-clip of a brilliant free kick goal. I believe it was the Count of Monte Cristo in here who ended up captaining him in GW1. Hedenstad went on to get a red card in that game..

I don't think they're in a position not to sell him. Everybody agrees he deserves a move to a bigger club, or to a one playing CL football at minimum, and he has said he wants that move, so I don't think they can just refuse that transfer.

      1. Tomeister
        • 9 Years

He's too professional to 'protest' and not train if he doesn't get a move. And he had 4 years on his contract, Spurs have no obligation to sell him.

Indeed. He signed the contract. Still of course they will sell. This is just levy negotiating

He won't make much more than £10M from him anyway. It's just the fact that Spurs are reduced into a too small a club now. They lack success. Had they played EL final or something, they could ask more money from their players.

        2. Camp No No
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 10 months ago

Of course he will stay professional and train and play as expected, doing his best. I don't doubt that. But still, he wants to progress in his career and Spurs are not progressing, declining if anything. And he has made that as clear as he will ever with his stonewalling.

His professionalism is also a reason to reward him with the transfer: he's doing his best for the club regardless of how bad they do, having basically got (with Kane) a team who overall were low table material to EL. The club cannot offer him CL football, so they will agree to sell him somewhere, for sure. Maybe not to ManU, however, because if Spurs have ambition for CL, they will consider ManU as _the_ rival for that CL place.

But there will be other takers. PSG? That's CL knockout rounds assured with chance to go far. Dortmund? They're not even in EL this season, but nobody doubts they will return to CL next season and they can get far there as well. Depends on the new manager a lot, I don't know much about him. Atletico? Real, if they miss out on De Gea or change their mind about who they want. I think my non-PL options ran out there. AS Roma, maybe, if they have money, but I guess they don't. My personal choice of team would be PSG, particularly as Juve has been interested in Sirigu. Or then just directly Juve, if PSG keeps faith in Sirigu.

You seem to really hate Spurs..

Low table material? They're the fifth best club in the league. Even without lloris.

Reduced to a small club? Not really, arsenal went a long period with no success, did people suddenly call them a small club? Newcastle and Aston villa are 'big' clubs, and Spurs are much bigger than them.

            Declining?
Sixth last year, fifth this year. Thats improving.. During a transitional stage. Also the youngest first team in major leagues in Europe. The future is bright.

Still, I agree with your points regarding lloris professionalism.

He'd be an idiot not to.

I suspect he'd get £60m easy for the two, probably more if he sells them both to Man Utd. He could buy Austin or Berahino (or both) to replace Kane, play Vorm and have plenty left over.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

What was wrong with 2014/15 in Fantasy Football?

What needs to happen in 2015/16 to make fantasy Football better?

For me last season was typified by a lack of striker options. ManU, Arsenal (for much of the season) and Liverpool all had little to offer us in terms of striker assets. I would like to see all three draft in decent striking options to give the game more choice.

      • 10 Years

As much as we loved it, Kane was what was wrong.

In a similar way to Suarez, he cut the game down to squads of 14. Then he was so cheap, we could afford who we wanted.

It'll be a culture shock, but next season the game will be more interesting.. more decisions, less template. (in theory!)

Wrong: the second wildcard is unecessary and spoils the game. With limited choices in most positions, why make the game less appealing? I suspect it's to help the flagging casual but they've already given up anyway.

Needs to happen: a decent first prize for me to win.

Giving people ability to make transfers through the season is a complete and utter joke. So you mucked up your initial teamselection? Well fecking lump it, you've failed, now move on and let others play.

Its a joke, fpl are just making it too easy for people to rectify their mistakes. Even Stalin wasnt this pisstakingly sarcastic. I hope fpl towers take a long hard look at themselves and wake up and see the complete buzzwhacks that they are.

You are missing the point of the game from the Premier league perspective and the game developers perspective. Their biggest remit will be to get as many people to play as possible and keep as many players engaged as possible.

Setting up a game for the few will not do that....If anything I think you could probably expect it to go even further towards the "casual".

Rather than a January wildcard we should be allowed to have say 5 additional transfers to use over that period. Will mean that everyones teams are less template but it still accounts for any seasons where there are fixtures cancelled because of the weather as well as January transfer window moves.

To be fair I don't think much needs changing but I agree with the above. The winter wildcard sucks, as do the prizes. Fix these as priority!

Kane was the problem. The prizes also really do need fixing. There should be more things like a game week prize for top score each week and then like monthly prizes as well as rewarding the top 5 overall and not just 1st place.

      1. Spectrum-FFS Doubles Champ

A gameweek prize could be difficult, what if there are plenty of teams with the same score? Do you give prizes to everyone? It has been known also that people have created a team for a specific gameweek just to try to be top scorer, not fair on those who play the game properly

As always the problem is defensive mids scoring or rather the lack of them getting rewarded for their hard work.
It is a scandal that some of the best in the world at their possition is completely unplayable in this game and it makes the game smaller.

Feck em. The game is mainly about attacking. No need to over complicate what is a simple game by rewarding defensive mids.

When my missus picks her team it's a mixture of player from big teams and players she thinks will score goals. She won't have a clue about defensive mids. That will probably be the same for 1m other casuals.

And you're probably right. It's just that FPL is a game for the masses and things like that will alienate the majority. All of us on here would be fine with it, but not FPL players in general.

The winter wildcard almost makes saving wildcard meaningless, as even those who used wildcard early on can wildcard their team pretty late to the game. There are really more different strategies available with just one wildcard, and more variety in teams in spring time.

Nothing really...although I've been quite keen on the idea of the pts potential for defenders to mirror that of the attackers. It would only require a (potential) single pt per game rule change somewhere along the line.

I agree with the lack of striker options. Most teams had Aguero+Kane, with the last striker being Costa, Austin or Giroud/Benteke as the season progressed. This will probably be different next season, seeing as Kane wont be 5-6mill.

These last two seasons have been about Aguero+Suarez/Costa, Hazard, Terry, Arsenal mid, City mid, and it would be nice with some other options in this price range (for example from Man United).

The main thing for me is a re-examination of the defender BPS. I think out-and-out defending needs to be better rewarded than it is without this passing malarkey. Arsenal v Sunderland is a prime example. Sunderland did all the defending but, as they dominated possession, the Arsenal defenders hoovered up the BAPs, needs looking at IMO

Also, peno saves should be worth more in the BPs, they can be a worthwhile as goal in winning a game, again I look here

Migs v Palace - saves a peno in a 3-1 loss (rendering the peno save irrelevant) 1 BP

DDG v Everton - a peno save plus about 6 other saves in a 2-1 win (making that peno save plus those saves as vital as everything else that happened) - no BAPs.

      Doesn't seem right to me

Making the January WC a 'second half of the season WC' would be much better. It'd prevent a January template team which will increase variance and strategy.

This is the best free fantasy football game full stop. That's because caters to "football people" and so it should. It needs to reward people who think about football and therefore all positions need to be able to contribute to your score in a meaningful way so defensive midfielders need to be able to score more points for you and the bonus system needs to reward overall performance.

Stop penalising own goals, which are almost always the result of bad luck. Instead penalise penalties conceded, which are often the result of silly defending.

Re: the post the other day suggesting Walcott and Sanchez will be forwards...

I think that's only because Arsenal classify them that way on their website:
    http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/clubs/profile.squads.html/arsenal
    matches
    http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/clubs/profile.squads.html/arsenal

and Hazard's still a mid because
    http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/clubs/profile.squads.html/chelsea
    matches
    http://www.chelseafc.com/teams/first-team.html

If Sanchez is a forward, Hazard would be too. So I wouldn't read anything into that.. it's not FPL's classification.

I'd rather not see them as forward personally, so that's promising at least. 🙂 I guess with only 3 forward spots, they don't want the pool of players to be too big. Makes sense to be mids, imo.

Further to the comments above...and this requires us to look at the game from the PL and game developers perspective...What could they do to ensure far more players stay engaged for the full season ?....I don't know what the drop out rate is but I'd guess it's about 50 or 60% with a further 20% flitting in and out...How could they improve that ?

Better prizes would help to sustain interest with frequent prizes for best gw score, best points tally for captain, regional prizes etc. Unbelieavble how bad the overall winners prize is. Pub leagues have better prizes.

It surely must have to happen. I have no idea what the long term plan is for FPL, or even of they have one, but a starting point of 3.5 million footfall offers an awful lot of possibilities for sponsorship of those prizes.

The way to do it is to make sure the game becomes more than just a Saturday game for the majority. I've always wanted FPL to publish price risers and fallers on their website in the same way that the likes of TotalFPL do...that would ensure a good chunk of people stayed engaged for the entire week.

          Yes.

This was used as the reason to pay a prescription because they had to pay the football League in order to be give permission to print the fixtures, such as in the season ticker.

To be honest with you, I can't afford it at the moment, have had to cut my Sky package right down to the bare minimum, so I don't know if I'll be renewing anyway.

I only really use it for the whole season ticker anyway so I'm not even sure its worth my while bothering with.

UEFA is a global brand, and they draw much of their revenue from outside Europe (I personally pay them through my satellite provider).

            They were cruelly parochial.

They sent me the following polite email:

        Hi Isaac,

Congratulations on winning the Russian League. Unfortunately according to the terms and conditions set by UEFA only players who reside within the UEFA territory are eligible to win prizes. Please see the terms and conditions found here http://en.user.uefa.com/account/TermsAndConditionsChanged (section 4.1.13) Apologies for any dismay this causes.

        Regards,
        Fantasy Support

        I'm still bitter about it.

I wonder if the prize got shifed down to the next places player or they kept it for theirselves.

                Sorry. Times are hard. 🙁

I was just having a look at their site. They don't even seem to have a terms and conditions page. Unless I'm just being blind?

I looked for it too. You're not blind (unless I am too).

The link they sent me in that email is invalid now.

It wasn't explicit the last time either. Which is why I celebrated so ... at first.

I hope it got shifted down.

Although the second placed person in that official ML might have been from India and the third from Nigeria.

I'm just glad I didn't "win" the 60 inch TV (it was a possibility right up to the last game).

Any newspaper that uses capitals mid-sentence... :rolls:

e.g. other stories on the site:
Chelsea 'target SHOCK transfer move for La Liga destroyer'
Chelsea would be MAD to do this transfer deal

Metro's video game writers (the core online ones anyway) are probably the best about. The rest of that site is a joke beyond words

Such a terrible, woeful joke. Agree the video game stuff (I've seen) has been good.
