The Hall of Fame Update

With the 2014/15 season behind us and anticipation for the new campaign building, it’s time to reveal the latest update to our Live Hall of Fame standings and the Top 10 best managers amongst the Fantasy Football Scout community.

The Hall of Fame (HoF) is a ranking system which we apply to everyone who takes part in our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) mini-leagues – both the free and the members league. Basically, this tracks the performances of every manager over each of the seasons they have participated and awards a “HoF rating” accordingly – the “Career” version of the Hall of Fame is viewable to all via this link.

If you’re wondering what the HoF is all about, you can read the FAQ below for a quick guide. Alternatively, you can view this movie to listen to Mark and its creator, Chris Atkinson, talk you through it.

The Hall of Fame Top 10

Ville Ronka retains his spot at the top of the Hall of Fame after cementing 277th place in the overall FPL rankings in 2014/15. This was his fourth top-1,000 FPL finish – indeed, in his seven seasons as a FPL manager, Ville has never finished outside of the top 5,000. During 2014/15, he took just five hits as he once again justified his tag as FPL’s top performing manager.

Nick (aka Triggerlips) notched up his fourth top-1,000 finish in FPL with a rank of 592 at the end of the 2014/15 season. This propelled him from sixth in our HoF rankings at the end of last season to second this year. After a poor first three seasons from 2007/8 to 2009/10, in which his lowest FPL finish in the rankings was 223,632, his last five years have been nothing short of remarkable, with a rank of 35th spot in 2012/13 the pinnacle.

Another to finish in the top 1,000 in 2014/15 is Mustafa Bialk, who leaps from 11th spot in our HoF at the end of last season to third this time round. As with Nick, he is another to find the right formula for success after a slow start to his Fantasy management career. After failing to breach the top 10,000 in his first four years, a finish of 317th in 2011/12 lit the touch paper for success. Since then, his end-of-season FPL rankings were 1,002, 310 and 456 in 2014/15.

One of the biggest climbers in our HoF is Martin Button, who moves from 25th place to fourth after finishing in 266th place in FPL in 2014/15. In nine years, this was his highest FPL finish and his third top-1,000 rank. A blip in 2013/14 where he finished in 18,376 is the only time he has failed to make the top 5,000 in FPL since 2008/9.

Derek Simpson is another riser, moving from 17th to fifth after finishing in 593rd spot in 2014/15. In eight seasons, this was his third highest placing, after ending up in 38th place in 2012/13 and 500th in 2009/10.

The ascent of Simon Walsh is incredible. He moves from 82nd to sixth in our end of season HoF rankings after finishing 95th in FPL at the end of 2014/15. In his four years as an FPL manager, he has ranks of 711, 16, 103 and, incredibly, 38th in his debut campaign.

Alianto Henry shoots into the top ten in our Hall of Fame from 51st to seventh. His 2014/15 rank of 164 was his second highest in five seasons playing FPL. As with Simon Walsh he is another fast learner, having finished his debut 2010/11 campaign with a rank of 23.

In eight is Martin Gupta, who is another dramatic climber in our Hall of Fame, after finishing with a HoF rank of 53 at the end of the 2013/14 campaign. The 2014/15 season saw his third top-1,000 finish in four seasons as an FPL manager. Martin’s debut FPL end-of-season rank of 46th in 2011/12 is his highest finish so far.

Craig Johnson (aka Bouncebackability) moves from 71st to ninth in our HoF rankings. His highest end-of-season finish of 64 in 2014/15 after nine years as an FPL manager was the reason for his ascent. Since starting in 2006/7, he has six top-5,000 finishes under his belt.

In tenth is Jon Sumner (aka Jinswick), who gave the 2014/15 Champion Simon March a real run for his money on the final Gameweek of the season. His decision to draft in hat-trick hero Theo Walcott pushed him to second in the overall FPL rankings. This means he is our HoF top ten’s highest climber, having finished in 338th place at the end of the 2013/14 season.

Honourable Mentions…

Matthew Martyniak (aka “Spiderm4tt”) leads the charge for the former FPL Champions. He has done his upmost to dispel the myth of that “difficult second season” once claiming the crown: he sits in 15th spot in the rankings, having built on his 2012/13 title victory with strong finishes of 995 in 203/14 and 731 last season.

This season’s champion, Simon March (aka “Dufflinks”), ranks next in 37th – his strongest finish prior to this past season was a rank of 3833 back in 2012/13.

The 2010/11 Champion, Chris McGurn returned a healthy rank of 4205 in the last campaign, boasting his HoF rating and climbing just inside the top 100 in 99th spot. Chris has finished inside the top 10,000 in every season since he was introduced to the FPL back in 2008/09.

Tom Fenley’s form hasn’t been quite so consistent. The 2013/14 champion famously committed Wildcard suicide this past season, a factor which contributed to an FPL finish of 11709, dropping his HoF rank to 737th.

Hall of Fame FAQ

How is my rating calculated?
The “HoF Rating” is based on your points scores from previous FPL seasons, with the latest season weighted the heaviest and each corresponding season weighted at roughly 70% that of the previous season. So, in other words, those who performed best in 2014/15 will receive a bigger HoF Rating boost from those who did best in 2006/07. The “HoF Ranking” even allows for those with missing years, adapting the formula accordingly to allow these managers to rank alongside the veterans of the FPL.

How do I join the Hall of Fame
Simply sign up to our leagues next season, either the Fantasy Football Scout Classic League or, if you’re a member, the Members Classic League – the code will available on the dashboard of the Members Area once the FPL game re-opens for registration.

How do I find myself in the Hall of Fame?
The search box at the top of the ranking tables allows you to search by surname or by FPL player ID.

What if I don’t want to be listed?
Either notify us via support@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk or simply leave the Fantasy Football Scout league and you’ll be removed on the next update.

When does the Hall of Fame get updated?
The Career table is available to all and is updated at the end of each season to display the latest rankings. The Live version of the Hall of Fame is updated regularly using the latest season data.

The Development of the Hall of Fame

Chris Atkinson, the creator of the Hall of Fame, has been working on some ideas to tweak the algorithm involved.

We’ve not yet implemented these changes and, instead, we plan to publish a follow-up article to talk through the proposals and gather your feedback.

Look out for this article last this week – we welcome your views.

A mention in an article is always good, I'm chuffed with that! (albeit not my posting name)

As for recent transfer activity, nothing jumping out at me. As for the potential of Ramos, a 7mill card magnet, no thanks. Ivanovic much bigger threat for me (even though he gets cards too). As a Liverpool fan I'm more concerned that if Ramos arrives does that mean De Gea more likely to stay?! I sure hope not, he's a top keeper.

Arsenal have a keeper for the firs time in years now, may they actually be a serious threat for the league this year? I don't think it will be a coincidence if they turn out to be.

Clyne could be a decent shout at 'Pool if they didn't have such a hellish start.

Most people in NZ seem to support Liverpool or Man U
Basically because they used to be the teams that appeared most often n the TV twenty years back

Man United because they were one of only a few teams that seemed to feature on TV in NZ. Was inspired by the rise of Ronaldo from a 17 year old show boater to a world beater as well.

Here in Ireland nearly everyone who follows football supports either Liverpool or United. When I started following football, which was 2009, cause thats the year I went to college and I was told it wasnt sufficient to just watch football without supporting a team. I use to just watch it without supporting any team in particular but was told I should pick a team in college. I didnt want to follow the crowd so back in 2009 City seemed a great pick. So thats how it happened for me.

I'm from the UK but don't support a team. I have a bit of passion for a lot of teams though, Forest being the main one at the minute - I seem to change every so often.

But about 6 years ago I started to support Houston Rockets, as they played Toronto Raptors in the first NBA game I ever watched. Followed BB for a couple of years after that.

Blackburn Rovers since 1992 when Rovers stand up Premier League. Why small team I don't know.
Some reason why I "choosen" Rovers. 1. Alan Shearer. He was my favorite player. And summer 92 he moved to Ewood Park.
      2. Rovers colour blue/white was then absolutely fine for me. Same colour what is Finnish flag.
For these reasons, I chose the Blackburn Rovers.

So now I do not have team in PL. 🙁

IMO yes, Ayew is probably more of a wide forward

He performed pretty well when he was given a run of games after Bony left (and had complained before that about a lack of games)

Swansea have plenty of options but I think Gomis is one of the more secure ones

I like Smalldini but Ramos will be a nailed on starter and even if we don't sign anyone else you basically have Smalling, Jones and Rojo for 1 spot. If we do sign a CB then it's even worse

We do have a CL qualifier before the season starts so that may hold some info (assuming all our signings are in place by then)

I think Jones and Rojo were part of the problem last season. Jones just never looks composed and Rojo looks much happier raiding forward than working with a partner.

Do you think LVG is in danger of having too big a squad if he tries to keep too many players happy?...I'm a big fan of playing a settled team as often as possible (Chelsea being a good example)

I think Smalling is ahead of Jones for sure

Rojo is the issue as he's left footed, which LvG seems to prefer

Smalling is perfectly fine as long as he's not required to pass the ball more than 5 yards, that why we struggled so much without Carrick, Smalling could just give him the ball and relax. Without Carrick he didn't have that, a bit like Vidic

Rio was always more comfortable in possession

As for squad size, it needs increasing due to CL, but we're also clearing out quite a few, Cleverley has gone, Nani looks like he's gone, Hernandez, Evans, Rafael, possibly even RvP could be off

I'm still not confident that he's actually coming, so don't want to get too carried away. Ramos's goal threat and passing is very strong though so could outweigh that. Plus refs are more lenient than in Spain i think

Yeah, I think it may be an odd situation of Smalling benefiting from Ramos being the better defender...and the more aggressive one in doing that (see above). Smalling is no slouch in the opposition box either.

Name your teams for the following categories for the upcoming season:

    - Overachiever
    - Underachiever

I'm going to go for Overachiever - Newcastle (relative to last season) and Southampton being Underachiever

    1. Lucy.

      8 years, 10 months ago

Ok but when you say underachiever, what do you mean? Because I'm getting slightly bugged by people calling us underachievers when they expect us to finish 12th-8th, when many predicted us to be relegated last season. We massively overachieved in 2014/15 and I don't think people are taking this into account when making their 2015/16 forecasts. How can we go from relegation candidates to 10th being seen as failure?

Achievement is always based on way more than that. Otherwise you had an absolute stinker of a season, which I don't think you did. You lost Suarez. Not many expected you to challenge for the title again once he left.

Actually, his brackets came after Newcastle, and did not appear to refer to the post as a whole. There was definite ambiguity.

And I will say it again, achievement must be contextualised.

No, he clearly stated that Newcastle's performance was in comparison to last season, as emphasised by the brackets following Newcastle. Not the entirety of the post. Important nuances in grammar.

Its his question so any answer should cater to his question. It doesnt matter where he mentioned the comparison, just that its in the original post when giving his answer. Its quite clear, good grammar or not.

'Its his question so any answer should cater to his question' - that's a nonsensical point if ever I heard one.

It's evidently not clear or this whole debate never would have arisen. It does matter where he mentions the comparison because it actually, by the nature of the english language, changes the way the question is stipulated.

I met a woman in that industry who was buying sheets of steel. She could convert sqmm, sqinch, sqm, anything like that, in a matter of seconds without a calculator.

Man city underachievers. Kun to get crocked and them to finish outside top four.

For the previous season, name the following team for each category:

    -Overachiever
    -Underachiever

True Grit or Unforgiven (though The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is great too)

im surprised no prem team has been heavily linked with chicarito Javier hernandez. I doubt he would cost more than £8 mill and I think he's guaranteed goals. I'd still happily have him back a t utd. I know he's similar to players like defoe and Darren bent in that he doesnt do much else other than score but I still think he could score 15-20 goals a season in all comps. someone like stoke, villa as (benteke replacement) etc. at liverpool he could get a hatful with coutihno and firmino behind him

yeah he seems to have slipped under the radar. as lucy says he's probably on biggish wages but then even teams like Bournemouth will be flush now with that £5 billion t.v. deal, plus if he keeps a team like villa up then he will be well worth the money. he's arguably a better bet than someone like falcoa to score goals in the prem.

I'd be happy with that. he would be a great 3rd striker for a top 4 team and further down the league he'd probably be in the majority of the teams first XI. he never seemed to get injured and was always sharp in the box, as proved with his CL atletico Madrid bernebeu goal (or ronaldos goal, according to henry 🙂

Its strange though because we just re signed Jones, Blackett, McNair and Smalling. Then there is Evens who is still there. I guess having an experienced campaigner in Ramos is the final ingredient. Although I still feel as if Jones and Smalling can be the main CB's for us going forward. At the moment Rafael is our only RB and he's on his way out

TBF Jones is probably of more use at RB even though he doesn't like playing there. In some ways a 352 still makes sense for United when you consider the balance of the squad. Thats not to say we are any good playing that formation of course.

Depay or ADM would end up as a striker alongside Rooney I presume which might be interesting. Valencia/Rafael and Blind would both make good wing backs as well. It wouldn't suit Young and Januzaj though. Mata might get his chance at #10 too which will be interesting.

We haven't been very United'esque ever since LVG came on board, although I think thats a good thing. We needed a proper shake up after Moyes tried to keep the crossing winger game but went a little too far with it.

Young actually did quite well as a wingback last year (others let him down). Adnan looks doomed under LVG.

Mata is interesting anywhere imo provided he is given freedom, something which LVG restricted for so much of the season

Adnan has to go out on loan anyway, I'd like to see him at a PL club, he could be very useful. Young had a great season last year and seems content to have to compete for a starting spot, it seems to bring the best out of him for when he does get a chance in the starting lineup.

Jones, Blackett and McNair just looks like such a rag bag army for a club the size of United. I can't see the sense in that. Mourinho plays with basically five defenders who can interchange positions and one youngster for back up...lVG could do a lot worse than learn from that,

Jones, Blackett and McNair wouldn't get anywhere near Chelsea's dressing room.

Smalling, Ramos, Rojo and then build on those three....

No it's not. I asked earlier if LVG is in danger of causing his own problems with too many players. You have to be careful if you end up with too big a squad.

I find it hard because I don't think it's possible to guarantee anything. There's always a chance that the 'guarantee' is wrong. This is also one of the reasons I'm against the death penalty.

But seeing as it's hypothetical. If it was possible to be 100% then I guess I would be all for it. But it would be an absolute last resort.

Apologies if it's out of context, just interested to see DZ opinions

I suppose authorities is a tough one

        Let's take both possibilities:

        1) Where 'authorities' are the FBI or equivalent department

        2) Where the 'authorities' is a citizen in the same scenario where there is not enough time for 1) to become involved

no he shouldn't. it would be wrong to preach about being a civilised society and bang on about democracy in the west and then at the same time waterboard someone 50 times. maybe if we weren't in Iraq/afganistan in the first place then organisations like IS wouldn't be so popular

@Ryan..Just whilst he's being mentioned. Phil Jones came out of the same junior leagues as my son's team and school football team in West Lancs. I now know quite well both his school and not school team coaches... HE USED TO PLAY STRIKER AND SCORED LOADS !!!!...crikey...

I still don't understand why he so wants to be a CB, he can offer a lot in attack and could be a very good DM or RB if he chooses to finally give up trying to be a great CB. He has some very good attacking instincts.

I have a lot of time for Phil Jones, he even said the greatest CB he's ever played with is Ryan Nelson, a New Zealander, I like that 🙂

When you compare him to Vidic and Rio whom Jones also played alongside its a big accolade. It also shows that Jones admires players with strong values and leadership, that attitude will bode well for jones in the future.

He has fantastic man marking ability- see vs Drogba, Bale, Fellaini. That skill is of far more use in midfield these days than at CB (at least at higher levels)

Peru player hoofed the ball and his leg followed the ball up and hit a guy who was trying to block the ball. I can see a reasoning behind the red card but not after Vidal was left off a shove to the face earlier

It will only get worse later as it decends into madness. You know it will! Was possibly harsh but left his leg up, Vidal should have been gone after 3 mins.

I don't know if you have watched their games but several suspicous incidents judged to their favor. From the start I took it as ref pressure but too much, too often, too obvious. If it smells like sh** it probably is...
