After assessing the Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders and Premium Defenders in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, we now focus our attentions further up the park.

Prior to our assessment, it’s worth noting the changes to the BPS scoring system this term. The decrease to the BPS for pass completion will hit those players who ply their trade for dominant teams, though in truth, that won’t hurt many budget attacking options hard – the likes of Nemanja Matic and Gareth Barry will be the chief protagonists in the cut-price bracket. There’s also the improved BPS changes for successful tackles, which will certainly benefit Matic, given that he made more (100) than any player in the Premier League last season.

We start off, then, with a look at what’s on offer at 5.0 and under as Fantasy managers scour the market for this year’s George Boyd or Matty Phillips…

Arsenal’s Francis Coquelin is, at the very least, a reliable starter at 4.5. Having been named in the first XI in 19 of the final 20 league fixtures, his defensive qualities afforded the Gunners a better overall balance last term, though given he failed to produce any attacking returns, you’ll be getting three-point returns at best here.

Villa’s new signing Idrissa Gueye has been priced at just 5.0 and boasts a relatively decent scoring record in 2014/15, arriving on the back of four goals and a pair of assists for Lille last term. Charles N’Zogbia and Scott Sinclair also come in at 5.0 but will need to force their way into the starting XI to have any chance of coming into consideration, with Jack Grealish expected to nail down one of the wide roles. Ashley Westwood sets you back 4.5 but with a single assist last term, he offers little prospect of attacking returns. With Bournemouth, Palace, Sunderland, Leicester and West Brom in the first six, though, Tim Sherwood’s side could be ones to monitor.

As mentioned in previous articles, Villa rotate home/away with Midlands neighbours West Brom over the 38 Gameweeks. Baggies skipper Darren Fletcher and Claudio Yacob (4.5 apiece) both started 15 of Tony Pulis’ 18 matches in charge last term and will at least offer security of starts in the centre of the park. Fletcher scored once after arriving at the Hawthorns, whilst James Morrison (5.0), who also started all but three of the fixtures under the new manager, produced two goals and an assist last term. New boy James McClean (5.0) could attract investment if Pulis affords the industrious winger a run of starts on the left flank – he chalked up six goals and seven assists in the previous campaign but faces competition from Callum McManaman (5.0).

Harry Arter could be an option for Championship winners Bournemouth – priced at just 5.0, he bagged nine goals and three assists last time out. Former Norwich man Andrew Surman looks the likeliest starter at 4.5 for the Cherries; despite sitting in the double-pivot, he managed three goals and six assists in 2014/15. Bournemouth have the kindest opening schedule over the first six Gameweeks, according to our season ticker – three strong home encounters (AVL, LEI, SUN) are complemented by a trip to Norwich.

Eddie Howe’s side rotate with fellow new boys Watford over the 38 Gameweeks, though the Hornets are currently undergoing a restructuring programme under Quique Sanchez Flores and it remains to be seen just how many of last season’s regulars will retain a starting role. The likes of Almen Abdi (5.0) racked up nine goals and two assists playing in “the hole”, while Ikechi Anya (4.5) proved to be a fine facilitator on the left flank, amassing seven assists. Etienne Capoue (5.0) and Valon Behrami (4.5) have already been drafted in and look the likely starters in the double-pivot in a 4-2-3-1, though the pair offer little in the way of attacking returns.

As mentioned above, Nemanja Matic looks set to be the chief beneficiary of the new BPS change for successful tackles. Coming in at just 5.0, he’s certainly very budget-friendly but his role in the Chelsea double-pivot produced just a goal and three assists last season – given we can only pick three players per team, few will be willing to turn to the Serbian as a viable option in the centre of the park.

Palace pair Mile Jedinak and James McArthur will set you back 5.0 apiece. The arrival of Yohan Cabaye places question marks over Alan Pardew’s plans in the centre of the park – should Cabaye be fielded in a deep-lying role, one of the duo look poised to miss out if the Eagles boss opts for a 4-2-3-1 set-up.

Everton’s Gareth Barry comes in at just 4.5 and started all but five of last season’s fixtures. Again, though, there’s uncertainty over Roberto Martinez’ intentions with Tom Cleverley adding an extra option in central midfield, whilst Steven Pienaar, Aiden McGeady and Leon Osman look far from certain starters at 5.0.

Claudio Ranieri’s arrival at Leicester may prove a source of frustration for Fantasy managers. Given that “The Tinkerman” is renowned for heavy rotation, the jury is very much out on Leicester’s potential regulars for the season ahead. Marc Albrighton staked a claim for inclusion with some strong displays at the end of last season – the 5.0-priced winger delivered two goals and assists in the Foxes’ concluding quintet of fixtures. The likes of Danny Drinkwater, Dean Hammond and Andy King are all 4.5 but we need to assess pre-season line-ups before considering any of them viable.

Liverpool’s Jordon Ibe is available at just 5.0 and was utilised as a right wing-back on a number of occasions during the latter part of 2014/15. With Brendan Rodgers keen to restructure, though, it remains to be seen whether the youngster can nail down a starting berth – right now, his acquisition looks too risky to justify.

Newcastle’s 5.0-priced Rolando Aarons will be hoping for a breakout season under new manager Steve McClaren. The fleet-footed 19-year-old scored and assisted in his second cameo last term, before succumbing to a hamstring injury that restricted him to two further appearances. Aarons has looked sharp in the close season, netting for the England U20s, though the arrival of new boy Georginio Wijnaldum could well restrict his pitch time.

Norwich ‘s Jonny Howson is available for 5.0 and produced nine goals and six assists from the centre of the park in the Championship last term. Wes Hoolahan (5.0) bagged five goals and ten assists, takes the majority of Norwich’s penalties and shares dead-ball duties with Nathan Redmond, though he’s less secure a starter – ten of his 39 appearances came off the bench. Graham Dorrans made 18 appearances (13 starts, five as a sub) after arriving at Carrow Road midway thorough last season. The former West Brom man – priced at 5.0 – bagged three goals and an assist and his top-flight experience could be key to the Canaries’ survival bid. Alex Tettey is cheaper at 4.5 but with 13 yellows to his name last year, may be best avoided.

With Morgan Schneiderlin now gone, Victor Wanyama looks a decent squad-filler at a price of just 4.5. The Kenyan struck three times for Southampton last time around, though his role in the double-pivot suggests he may struggle to replicate that goal-getting form, given he mustered just 28 attempts over the course of the previous campaign. Steven Davis (5.0) started 32 times in 2014/15 and although he managed just two assists, still produced 49 key passes for the Saints. Ronald Koeman’s side square up to three of last term’s top seven in the opening 13 rounds of fixtures.

Similarly, Tottenham’s Nabil Bentaleb and Ryan Mason are very budget-friendly options at 4.5 and 5.0 respectively. The duo offer little in the way of attacking output, though – Bentaleb chipped in with a pair of assists in 2014/15, whilst central midfield partner Mason managed a goal and four assists.

Sunderland’s spot-kick taker Jordi Gomez (5.0) had started to find his form under new manager Dick Advocaat before his previous season was ended by injury and could be worth considering if he can nail down a starting berth again. Lee Cattermole comes in at 4.5, though it’s fair to say he is more likely to produce yellow cards than attacking returns. The Black Cats have some very kind opening fixtures and face just three of last season’s top seven in the first 14 Gameweeks.

West Ham new boy Pedro Obiang is available for a cut-priced 5.0 – although he’s noted more for his tough tackling, he notched three times for Sampdoria in Serie A last term. The Hammers have four decent home matches (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR) in the first seven Gameweeks to heighten their initial appeal.

I would quite like a crack at a decent draft league this year. When do you think the best time to set one up would be? I am thinking a bit closer to the beginning of the season.

Yeah probably the week before when most new players have been added, and then have a second draft at the close of the transfer window.

I suspect there would be enough interest around here to do that. The difficult part is finding a time everyone is available.

I want to take part in a draft league this season too. How many teams in a league is appropriate? I was thinking about about 8 teams. Never done it before

Well the more teams there are the more difficult it will be to have the top players.

But there has to be some limit. In my opinion anymore than 10 teams and there's just not enough players to go round. Maybe someone who's play draft league before can enlighten us

Hazard and Walcott or Sanchez and Fabregas lads?

Can't help think that a fit and ready Walcott and Ramsey makes Sanchez not needed this year.

Cesc in the no 10 would tip the balance in the second options favour but we just don't know what will happen yet.

    @Test Eagles,

Just updated my profile. Team name is Rozi Tiger Malaya.

I can actually recall someone made a league named "Official Deadzone League" apart from that Innsie's H2H "Graveyard Shift". Not sure where do I finished in the Classic League but surely on podium 😉 However if your league is going to the official one then count me in.

Chelsea's first 5 fixtures are SWA, mci, wba, CRY, eve, ARS. I just had a quick look to see how well Fab and Haz did in these fixtures last season.

SWA: Hazard blank, Fabregas 2 assists
    mci: Hazard assist, Fabregas blank
wba: Hazard blank, Fabregas blank (and RC)
CRY: Hazard goal (and penalty miss), Fabregas blank
    eve: Hazard blank, Fabregas assist
ARS: Hazard goal (penalty), Fabregas assist

    Total:
Hazard: 2 goals, 1 assist, 1 penalty miss
Fabregas: 4 assists, 1 red card.

Probably doesn't mean much but make of that what you will.

      4 assists = 12 points
      2 goals 1 assist = 13 points
That's without factoring in bonus points. I know bps have changed but a Hazard goal (be it a dodgy penalty) is worth 8 points most weeks

I'll set up a H2H league for the DeadZone now. The league will have 38 participants so that everyone plays each other once.

Now, I say this in the nicest way possible, but my aim for this H2H league is to have active, regular, deadzone posters, because H2H leagues are no fun if you can't engage in some friendly banter with the other players. If you want to join, send me an email. Make sure you include your FFS name in it - if you don't, you won't be in. I'll then reply to your email with the league code if I recognise you and think you'll be up for the banter. In saying that, there'll be no guarantees due to limited numbers.

    Send your email to: innsie@hotmail.co.nz.

    Cheers DZ 🙂

Not sure, will be busier during the season & LMS takes a bit of effort early on removing close to 100 teams in the early weeks. Would run LMS and maybe a few leagues if I could get some help or else I am not sure how much I could commit to it. Hopefully you have another great season. 🙂

      Ruddy Butland

        Ivan, Kos, O’Shea (4.5/4.0)
        Haz, Ramsey, Ritchie, Silva (Wanyama)
        Aguero , Sakho, Deeney

        Costa/Rooney until Aguero fit

        I'm unsure on the Arsenal mids (8.5) and.the 4.5m and 4.0m defs...

    Cech
    Ivan-Cedric-O'Shea
    Haz-Ozil-Hendo-Ritchie
    Aguero-Kane-Deeney

    4.0-Morgan-Baker-Wanyama

Would it be worth downgrading Ivan to Azpi to upgrade Kane to Rooney?

    1. Butters_lfc9
      • 14 Years

Could also downgrade one of my 4.5's to Saylor to get Costa instead of Kane

    2. EAGLES (0 Chelsea players)
      • 14 Years
      10 years, 4 months ago

Id downgrade Ivan, but thats mainly because I believe in relatively affordable defenses; that will give you cash to get Rooney or even upgrade Deeney. I don't get the Ritchie hype, but thats a decent punt I guess...rest looks good.
I wouldn't get Wanyama either just because his ownership is ~18% which means price drops are probably inevitable.

    How the latest tinker looking?

    Courtois / Hamer
    Shaw / Mertesacker / Moreno / Morgan / S Taylor
    Hazard / Walcott / Henderson / Ritchie / Anya
    Rooney / Costa / Sakho

Need to keep an eye on Shaw and Moreno's starting place obviously but if they're in the first eleven I think they're great shouts. Could downgrade Rooney/Costa to Benteke and spend the money elsewhere but I love having those two big hitting strikers.

Since we can't save the first WC this season, have someone thought of putting up a good side for, let's say the first 5 GW's, and then use WC for sorting things out according to players form/new good players/starters etc.?

Or would it be a better strategy to go for a "safe" squad lasting until Christmas or so?

The forced WC in the front half means this will be a popular strategy. I tend to use my WC early to get onboard the money-making bandwagons, never regret it either honestly.

get 2 keepers that play for 9.5
      I've got Jag> Cresswell for 2&3gws
I had so much freedom after I went Haz> Fab(+2.5)
      That's a proper 1st draft. GL

I'll give a percentage (guess obviously) with the yes/no instead with a brief explanation

Walcott - Yes - 85% : Could be rested from time to time due to the plethora of attacking options at AW's disposal
Ramsey - Yes - 80% : a/a, although slightly more injury prone to the odd knock
Ozil - Yes - 90% : a/a. I think nailed on the start essentially always, however the more likely to get hauled off early from a bad game
      Depay: Couldn't tell you sorry
Mata: Yes 70% : Difficult to say how LVG will shape the attack with the new signings.
Sterling Yes 90% - Can't see City spending so much and having him rot away on the bench

I am going for a very cheap defense this year and I wanted to know:

Existing defenders Targett, O Shea, Darmian, Huth, Francis.

I can shuffle Darmian to 2 x 5mil defenders. What do people think? I don't like Leicester this year.

Sir, you need to spend more cash in defense. As far as that defense is concern, I would go for: Williams, O'Shea, Bassong, Shawcross, Huth

I know it is cheap but I am taking a flyer on strong forwards:

        Wally Ozil Fab silva
        Rooney Costa Deeney

Who to ditch? I had Cabaye.

I applaud your uber sensibilities. There will be another year when ubers fill our back 5. Not sure about this year though.

My feeling is you'll need Ivan or Kos plus 4 ubers to start with.

Wait on Man U first to see how kak they are.

    Report: Sacramento Republic 1v0 Sunderland

    Sunderland 1st half team: http://i.imgur.com/MF2Gihu.png

    - Sunderland don't look very threatening up front.
    - Only chances came from Defoe striking narrowly wide from the edge of the box, a Steven Fletcher snap shot that whistled wide and another from the Scotsman just before half time when he headed an Adam Matthews cross onto the crossbar.
    - O'Shea/Brown not looking sharp at times and seem to be standing off their opponents a lot
    - Good first half from the youngster Beadling at LB.
    - Larsson on corners and FKs.
    - Cattermole operating DM and his role is simply to break up the play(er)

    Sunderland 2nd half team: http://i.imgur.com/rANaZqK.png

    - Seems Dick switched to 3-4-1-2, moving Beadling (who I thought played well at LB) to the centre of the back 3.
    - Rodwell is filling in at LB now when Sunderland don't have the ball, and looks abysmal trying to act as a LM when they have it.
    - Virtually nothing happening in terms of chances or creativity for Sunderland.
    - Goal conceded from not closing players down as noted in the 1st half.
    - Defoe subbed at 65 mins for Watmore who had one decent dribble and Sunderland's only real chance of the 2nd half.
    - Mannone stupidly handballs outside the box at 79 mins and gets booked.
    - Wickham and Graham were anonymous from coming on, ended up as part of a 3-5-2 by 90 mins.

Sunderland missing a few players such as PVA, Coates, Gomez and Johnson.

Could do with a new winger and a CM, because Defoe looked lost out on the wing and the midfield trio looked uninspiring at creating a chance.
