Earlier this month, Swansea manager Garry Monk bolstered his attacking options with the capture of Braga centre-forward Eder on a three-year deal. Having plied his trade in the Primeira Liga for the past six seasons, the Portuguese striker was delighted to finally make the switch to the Liberty, after first arriving on the Swans’ radar back in 2012, when Michael Laudrup was in charge:

“I am very happy to have signed with Swansea. It’s a big club and I believe I can progress as a footballer here. The Premier League will be a step up for me, but I’ve played in the European competitions and also for my country so I’ve experienced different levels of the game. Hopefully my team-mates will help me develop and settle in quickly at the club. I can’t wait to meet all of them when I report for pre-season training. Swansea are a solid club who have big ambitions – last season confirmed that – and it’s great for me to be a part of it.”

The History

Born in Guinea-Bissau, Eder emigrated to Portugal at a young age and begun his footballing career at ADC Ademia. The six-foot-three-inch forward earned his senior debut for third-division Portuguese outfit Oliverira Hospital, producing seven goals in 23 appearances before switching to fellow third division club Tourizense, where he amassed 10 goals in 34 outings the following season.

Having cut his teeth in the lower leagues, Eder’s first taste of top-flight football arrived following a move to Academica. Throughout his four seasons with the Primeira Liga side, Eder carded 12 goals and nine assists in 83 league outings and also contributed to Academica’s first Portuguese Cup win since 1939, courtesy of a win over Sporting Lisbon.

Braga then snapped up the Portugal international in the summer of 2012 on a four-year deal. Eder’s first season with Os Arcebispos (The Archbishops) was curtailed by injury when he suffered ligament damage in February. Nonetheless, he still managed to tally an impressive 13 goals and three assists in just 18 league appearances.

Eder made just ten starts the following campaign, registering three goals and two assists. The past season saw the rangy forward handed the most pitch time since his transfer to Braga, harvesting 10 goals and one assist in 28 appearances. In all, Eder notched 26 goals and six assists in 59 league outings during his stay at the Municipal Stadium.

On the international front, Eder made his full debut for Portugal during a 2014 World Cup qualifier back in August 2012. His solitary goal for A Seleccao arrived in a friendly against Italy in June 2015.

The Prospects

Given that Swans boss Garry Monk primarily favoured a 4-2-3-1 formation last term, there doesn’t appear to be a natural role for Eder to fill. Bafetimbi Gomis is sure to retain his lone striker berth – having bagged five goals in his last six appearances of the campaign – while Gylfi Sigurdsson cemented the number ten spot with seven goals and ten assists in the season gone by. On the flanks, new boy Andre Ayew will likely be deployed in his favoured role on the left, while Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge are able servants on either wing.

Having been fielded as a centre-forward in every league appearance he made last season, Eder should serve as a back-up to Gomis in a one-striker formation – particularly when Monk has already referred to Eder as “competition” for the former Lyon frontman:

“Eder is the type of striker we’ve been looking for. He has excellent attributes; strong, quick and technically sound with the ball. He has a good pedigree and is a full international with Portugal. He fits our profile in terms of the players we’ve signed in the last two seasons because he’s young, hungry and eager to prove himself in the Premier League. He has the characteristics we are looking for and will certainly add competition to the striking department. I’m looking forward to seeing him work alongside the likes of Bafe (Gomis) and Marvin (Emnes). And the fact that we’ve got him in early is a bonus.”

Last year, however, Monk adopted a 4-3-1-2 formation on a handful of occasions, and a return to such a system would allow the Portuguese marksman to possibly earn starts in a two-man attack. That being said, Ayew also possess the skill set to partner Gomis up top and could be considered a better foil to the Frenchman in light of his propensity for making runs in behind.

Save for developments in pre-season that suggest he can establish a starting role, Eder – priced at 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game – looks like one to steer clear of in the early stages. Currently, Sigurdsson and Ki Sung-yeung are the most popular outfield options for the Swans; both currently sit in 9.1% of teams, with the latter’s eight strikes and 5.5 price tag making him one of the stand-out options in the sub-6.0 midfield bracket. Gomis, meanwhile, is available for only 7.0, and having netted against the likes of Arsenal and City last season, has already highlighted his fixture-proof appeal.

The Swans kick off the 2015/16 campaign with a trip to champions Chelsea, before hosting Manchester United in Gameweek 4. Mercifully, the Welsh club’s other four fixtures (NEW, sun, wat, EVE ) in their opening half-dozen look to be more fertile grounds for their attacking contingent. For now, though, it seems Eder’s time may be restricted to minutes off the bench unless Monk switches systems in order to accommodate a two-man frontline.

James Milner would have finished with 199 points last year if he continued his form throughout the season and if he played the same amount of minutes as Henderson... Food for thought

It means nothing. He was a reserve winger at City and now he'll be a starting CM. Different teams, different minutes, different style, different position. Nothing can be drawn from last season regarding Mr Milner

Very true. However BR did mention after a recent preseason match that he wanted more goals from midfield while praising Milner's performance from which he scored. Still doesn't mean he is talking specifically about Milner but it does seem BR is expecting great things from Milner end product wise aka fantasy-wise

I definitely agree that Milner can be a great attacking option for Liverpool but the circumstances are still very different to when he was at City so we can't use last season's data to predict this season's outcome.

They share corners and set pieces at the moment so thats one of Hendo's big drawcards. With that at evens for the moment I would have to favour Milner as well, he tends to get in the box a little more regularly.

  4. Ivan vs Azpilicueta

The Ivanovic vs Azpilicueta decision is an interesting one.

Something that always seems to come up in this discussion is 'Ivan will score 40+ points more than Azpi over the season, therefore he's worth 1m more'. This is rubbish. Very few FPL managers will keep the same player, especially the same defender, for the whole season. Even if we narrow the timeframe down to half a season, which is still a long time to own the same player, this narrows down the games/opportunities that Ivan will have to get attacking returns whilst he's in your team. A Chelsea clean sheet is more likely than an Ivanovic goal or assist. When Chelsea get a clean sheet, Azpi will be more likely to get bonus points. He is one of the best, if not the best, defensive fullback in the league, which will be rewarded even more with the new BPS calculations.

Let's also not forget where that 1m that you save can be spent. That's the difference between a Wilson and a Sakho. A Ritchie and a Henderson. An O'Shea and a... Kolarov 😯

If we selected our team based on the whole season, would Ivan be worth 1m more than Azpi? Probably. But we don't. FPL is a dynamic game where our squads and players are constantly changing. To me, if you're after a Chelsea defender, Azpi is an absolute no brainer.

Not really an issue for me at this stage. There are far more clean sheets after Xmas than before so attacking or cheap-and-rotating defenders are my go for the first squad.

again, i'm not yet a member this season so i can't crunch the numbers, but i did an analysis last pre-season (not sure how to find it now but i think it was a hot topic) showing that in the first several gameweeks of a season the top scoring teams tended to be the usual suspects whereas the best teams defensively were a random assortment of mostly mid-table clubs. contrary to a couple of hot topics recently, it's simply not a great idea to spend big on defence early for this reason, and i say that as someone who currently has ivan (but only 17.5 across the rest of my backline atm).

I'm not of the superstitious type so I don't really make much of his early season runs. But I think spending 7m on a defender at the start of the season when we have a tight budget is a bit over the top.

We'll see. Fixture difficulty may also play a part in his early season form. Away at City wasn't one of Chelsea's opening fixtures last season or the season before, and his attacking threat will be minimal there.

So you must concede really. Ivan's appeal is attacking returns hence the 1m. He's started well 3 seasons in a row now and despite fixtures Chelsea can score against anyone, they are the champions after all.

Indeed they can score against anyone but let's not forget who their manager is. Will Ivanovic be bombing forward away at Manchester City or will he be asked to stay further back as they try and grab a 1-0 victory? They also play tough games against wba, eve and ARS where Ivan may have to limit his runs. I personally think fixture difficulty is something that's been very overlooked in previous discussions about Ivanovic's attacking potential.

That is a fair point and it could certainly limit his forward runs early on although I would only consider the City and Arsenal games as difficult fixtures that may limit his attacking intent. In those games however I believe his heading ability from corner kicks can be his appeal since its quite common for Chelsea to chase 1-0 victories in such fashion. Admittedly he'd have competition from Terry.

2 of the last 3 seasons. I wouldn't count 1 goal in the first half of 2013-14 as starting well.

Ivanovic, Terry, Costa and even Matic challenge for most corners. If, due to these hard fixtures, the main appeal of a 7m defender is his heading ability from corners then I'd say that's a hefty price tag for a relatively low probability of attacking points. Also remember if Chelsea win 1-0, after the goalscorer and possibly the assister, it's highly likely that Azpi will be right up there in terms of BPS. This can't be overlooked as bonus points really stack up.

Exactly Shadow. And who were those 2 fixtures against? Wigan and Reading. As I said above, people can't underestimate the importance of fixture difficulty when it comes to the attacking potential of defenders.

Ivan scored in GW1 last season (away at Burnley), and again in GW3 (away at Everton which was a freak game). In GW6 against Villa, Azpi got an assist.

Chelsea have had relatively easy starts to the season in recent years, but their mixed fixtures this season will dent his attacking potential.

Yep, looks like Luis is off. Also Azpi didn't get rotated at the start of last season, it was mainly around the hectic Christmas schedule when Luis managed to get some games. He's first choice for sure and I'd be comfortable having him despite the minimal threat of him missing the odd game.

All 4 of Ivan's double digit hauls were in the first 22 weeks of last season. 4 of his 6 assists as well. Ivanovic weeks 1 thru 22 was worth more than Azpil. Ivanovic weeks 23-38 was not. Much of the difference is probably down to tactics and I believe Chelsea 2015-16 will look a lot more like they did in weeks 23-38 when Ivan and Azpil were close to level.

I don't believe Mourinho is going back to the attacking style if the earlier part of the season - the style that saw Ivanovic parked in the offensive box at time. I think the difference in the later part of the season was the result of the evolution of the various parts of the team into a Mourinho style team. With all those parts now in place I don't expect the tactics to devolve.

Would you not suggest that injuries to all their main strikers had a huge impact on their defensive output and resulted in Azpi cleaning up in the baps? Surely this is not something that will simply happen again? Also you could argue that they were defending a lead in the table rather than building one?

Possibly. Time will tell, but I don't see Chelsea running away from the pack early on this year. I think they'll win but the season will be more competitive.

This was my post from earlier today (before I heard about Luis)

      Is Ivan worth it?

For those those are interested, I have settled on Azpi + Kos with 3 x 4.5m Defs

Last season Ivan averaged 4.7 ppg. (4 Goals 6 assists + 561 BPS)

      Azpi averaged 4.6 ppg (3 Assists + 627 BPS)

      Kos averaged 4.4 ppg (3 Goals + 575 BPS)

If I want Ivan I need to drop Kos to a 5m. Is there a 5m that will take up the slack?

Is it worth leaving my team unbalanced?

Of course there are other what ifs and maybes but for me it’s Azpi + Kos.

One of the big decisions and incredibly difficult one.

I've tinkered with both, neither and having one or the other. At the minute I have both. I said earlier both are excellent options at their respective price points. I'm also not superstitious but I would absolutely kick myself if Ivan started strong once more and I didn't have him ("next season...". If he fails early doors and I have him, that would be a far less painful alternative and an easy downgrade.

In the case of Azpi, I think he's cracking value and perhaps more of a long term pick now due to price and Luis leaving.

Also, if I had Ivan and not Azpi with the latter proving to be better value, I would be frustrated at having overspent by 1m...

We all have a different team in mind - I guess that's why we have differing opinions on Ivan. To get the team I want there is no room for Ivan. Others may see Ivan as essential hence build a team around him.

I would say Mane certainly has more potential for goals, but Tadic has a huge amount of opportunity for assists. For 1m cheaper, I might go with Tadic, even if it is just to bank the cash for boosting up to Kun...

If Ivanovic struggles in the early going, the downside is small. How can we even know if Henderson will be better than Ritchie? Sakho than Wilson? (Obviously kolarov will get 5 goals and 10 assists, so I'm not arguing against him) but my point is: we can be pretty confident that Ivanovic will out score Dave. With all the changes for a lot of the other teams it is difficult for me to determine which players are best so I feel the most attacking fullback for the best team is worth a premium.

All that said, I've had the Ivan/Dave double up in most of my drafts.

well you say the difference between iva and azpi is 1 mio and the point difference is 40+

with the 1 mio itb you claim you can upgrade wilson to sakho, ritchie to henderson and o'shea to kolarov. between the names you mentioned do you think there'll be 40+ difference in points? besides, i believe mids and fws are transferred more than the defenders because they are simply getting into form by scoring or assisting and have the potential to reach higher scores than defs.

my suggestion get a premium defender and then choose good rotation pairs. there will always be an accordingly solution fitting your budget for the rest of the team

I'm at bit dubious about the Azpi situation cuz Mourinhio seems keen on bringing in Abdul Baba Rahman so would he not play an out'n'out LB in Rahman over Azpi (as good as Azpi was last season)? I could be wrong

That's what everyone thought about Luis before last season. Until Dave gets dropped, I think you have to operate under the assumption that the LB job is his.

Looks good. I started out with the same keepers but switched to Butland/Ruddy (4.5+4.5). Hamer may not be second choice keeper and the new manager may "tinker" a bit.

A good defence and as Innsie mentions downgrade and upgrade a couple of mids. You could go Wilson up front and Anya as mid to rottate (depending on Anya's game time). You could upgrade Bolasie to Mane (one of my favs at the mo').

      any plans for Aguero?

    Morning DZ,

Here's my current thinking. Cheap keepers. Ivanovic plus four 4.5s (with good rotation, proven track record of PL attacking returns and alternatives at the same price in the same defence). Rooney, Walcott, Giroud, Henderson play every week. Start with Fabregas over Hazard - taking the gamble that there's not much between them in the tricky early fixtures and the 2.5 saved can be put to better use elsewhere.

All of which leaves me enough cash to be able to get a combo of Lukaku, Lens and Ayew to play two from three to round out my front seven. That gives me the following :

    Lukaku (WAT), Lens (lei)
    Ayew (NEW), Lens (NOR )
    Ayew (sun), Lens (SWA)
    Lukaku (tot), Lens (avl)
    Ayew (wat), Lens (TOT)
Lukaku (swa), Ayew (EVE), Lens (bou)
    Lukaku (wba), Ayew (sot)
Lukaku (LIV), Ayew (TOT), Lens (WHM)
    Ayew (STO), Lens (wba)
    Ayew (avl), Lens (NEW)
    Lukaku (SUN), Lens (eve)
Lukaku (whm), Ayew (nor), Lens (SOT)
Lukaku (AVL), Ayew (BOU), Lens (cpl)

Obviously I don't expect to keep that squad without any changes. I may well shift Lukaku out after the gw1 game vs Watford. Ayew and Lens are both a little punty and might need to be removed, but they both have cheaper alternatives in the same midfield (Ki or Larsson for instance). Similarly if my defenders are benched or injured I plan to have ready-made alternatives: Huth-Morgan, Bassong-Martin, Richards-Hutton-Richardson, Ward-delaney-hangeland...

That should minimise the number of transfers I need to make and enable me to focus on getting the right premium players based on form and fixtures.

      Ivanovic Huth Bassong Richards Ward
      Walcott Henderson Fabregas Lens Ayew
      Rooney Giroud Lukaku

      That's why I went with Shaw 😎

But anyways...we can decide on the United CB last minute as well because I guess the deadline will close after their Line Up is announced..If I'm not wrong

Yet to see a direct quote that actually says that. However I do agree that he is competing with Valencia and Darmian will have a fight on his hands. I've been saying it for ages but get the usual 'Valencia is crap Darmian will start' mantra.

Van Gaal stated that Darmian, the Italy right-back bought for £12.7m from Torino, will start as back-up. “We have brought Darmian for the second position behind [Antonio] Valencia and now already because of that injury [Paddy] McNair has to play there,” he said.

Is anybodies universe is it possible to have a team capable of competing if you have these five players in it?

    Rooney, costa, Aguero, Hazard, Walcott?

I know the answer is no but would love somebody to give me a yes and a how!

Have rotators for the others. 3 miss at 6 / 5.5/ 5. Make sure 2 from 3 each week work.

      Dirt cheap defence can be done too. 5 / 5 / 4.5 x 3

      I'd go

Shmike / but land (or rotating 4.5s)

      Alder / shawcross / o Shea / Huth / Francis

      Haz / wally / Ritchie / v ginkel / 5m gamble (say McCarthy)

      Aggy/ costa / Rooney

Give a little upgrade where you want

Is it possible that Darmian is second fiddle to Valencia? Possible united could line up like this....
    ---------- De gea -------
    - Darmian - Rojo - smalling - shaw
    -----Schneiderlin - Schweinsteiger ---
    ----------------- Mata ----------------------
Di Maria ------ Rooney --------- Depay

Based on players currently at club

Now that Darmian seems to be 2nd choice is better to choose Shaw instead? I know he is injury prone but really want ManU defender especially for 5.5.

Yeah I saw that too so it's possible Shaw has no competition until he gets injured / starts off bad.

I still think Blind will be a threat - did really well there last season and we have lots of players in central midfield now.

Certainly true. A 4231 formation suits Shaw a lot better than the 3412 formation of last year where he needed extra fitness training to be in contention as a WB.
