UFPL Surgery

I know a lot of people here, myself included, really enjoyed the Ultimate Fantasy Football (UFPL) last season and are looking forward to next season. With its sister game Fantasy Premier League (FPL) dominating much of the conversation cross Fantasy Football Scout I thought it would be a good idea to create an area for all things UFPL to be discussed. Please use this area to post RMTs, questions, tactics, rotations, and whatever else you feel applies to the ‘Ultimate’ world.

To get the conversation going here is a bit about my experience with this game, which I played during its Beta phase in 2013/14 and for its debut season in 2014/15.

I particularly like its differences to the original FPL game, which I thought was worth the £5 entrance fee. Having a 25-man squad and additional points for interceptions, recoveries, key passes gave it more depth, especially by bringing in more defensive minded players into play, thus adding a further challenge to squad selection. I also found that the scoring was higher and I managed to get a couple of centuries last year. The in-Gameweek changes with Matchdays is also appealing.

UFPL requires more time and maintenance than FPL so it’s not one for the casuals. Given my relative success last season I thought I’d share my selection tactic, which helped give me  a good team balance.

For the bulk of last season I stuck to this spread of premium, budget, mid price and ultra low priced players.

GK – 1premium, 1budget, 1 bench fodder

Def – 1premium, 3midprice, 4budget

Mid – 4 premium, 2midprice, 2 budget

For – 2 premium, 1midprice, 3 budget

I didn’t look too much into match day rotations, kept my team balanced and took a couple of risks. What advice would you give regarding making the best of the in-Gameweek transfers?

I restricted my use of loans for a few of the key double Gameweek targets. Although these mostly backfired, I think the lower cost for loans this year will make them a lot more useful and offer greater reward than last year. Do you agree?

The main point of this article is to get some discussions going that are solely for UFPL.  If you are unfamiliar with the game and want to read up on the different rules I suggest checking out the UFPL rules page here.

surely hazard is a must? hes even more deadly in this than fpl lots of other things i would change but im a novice at this so dont know that my ideas are better than yours...

Hazard isn't a must at that price, the extra money will benefit the rest of the Squad. Hazard will likely get good returns, but you have so many good midfield options that going without him could be the right decision.

      This team has great promise.
Personally not into leaving money into the bank you have enough transfers to reorganize your team.

Is Hennessey Nailed if not get a 3rd Keeper who is. Panti and Schmeichel are solid picks.

Ivan I'd downgrade, doesn't justify the extra spend. Prodl I would wait initial fixtures aren't great 1.8% ownership makes should make you pause. Darmian, didn't LVG say Valencia was first choice. Huth over Morgan for me currently.

Midfield is nearly identical to mine, would upgrade Tettey. I'm Hendo over Milner because of I feel I know what I get with Hendo. Consider Chadli if you are looking at spurs.

Hooper to Wilson, Benteke is very tempting as a MD2 and MD3 option if fit at that price in a better team I'd strongly consider trying to fit him in, but only hooper is one I'd currently steer clear.
      ,
Most of the team are solid picks that are likely to get consistent returns, I spread the money around slightly differently, but I think that you should have a decent season if you don't miss many deadlines.

im not loving the look of it to be honest but thats my own preference. it seems a good squad for the season but bearing in mind u have 16 transers before week 4 and its set in stone i would tailor it towards maximising points from the first few weeks... for example myhill is never gonna keep a c.s against city so dont waste a bench spot on him...change one(or preferably 3or 4) of the out field players to an md2 or md3 cos u have so many md1s its inhibiting your team.

Looks decent. Puncheon might not be the fantasy player he's been before though if Cabaye steals some of his set-pieces. Palace have a couple of really tough fixs in the first 4 too, so I'd maybe be tempted to replace him with someone with better fixtures and monitor the situation. Could always bring home in at end of transfer window instead

Goalies is Hennessey nailed or a £4m money saver I would want 3 keepers that a nailed to play in this game!
With save point Butland, Panti, Schmeichel, Fabi, MIg, Adrian and man utd keeper if DDG goes then I don't think a £5.5 is necessary to spend on a keeper.

Defence, Kompany isn't worth the £6.0m, Fonte good but pricey, don't like williamson,
I'd have Hart and Kosc over Cech and Kompany.

Midfield I would prefer Fab and the £2.5m to spend, I'm not convinced by Puncheon as a pick,

Attack is too light I would have a Pelle/Lukaku/Benteke and not convinced by Hooper.

How much MITB do you have?

            I've made a few changes now. http://imgur.com/jH7cGub

Changed out Hooper as he won't play and put Wanyama who actually plays and had a few flukey scores last year and he plays 3 non MD1 games in the first 4 for a bit of variety with Tadic.

Got rid of Jagielka as he was going to only be used for MD1 before his tough schedule.

Mignole and Ogbonna are both for potential clean sheets next week, same with Shaw as I'm not expecting a clean sheet verse Spurs.

Also changed to three playing GKs, non of which are 5.5 and brought in Kosc.

Also brought in Silva for Sterling as I'd like to see Sterling play a few games first and I know you get what you pay for with Silva.

            Oh and no MITB.

Thoughts? Cheers for the advice so far btw guys. This is my first year giving this format a go.

Good luck I did the beta and played last season finishing top 0.5% in both. Try and make the deadline if you want to do well. Once you have a good squad planned out it is pretty low maintenance, it just takes discipline to make the deadlines.

              It is definitely looking better.

Wilson I'd have for MD1 over Richards and Migs over Stek on bench.

Shaw is an ok option if he stays fit I'd be wary of a player who has missed a whole season injured.
Ogbonna I'd go Jenks or Cresswell if the money is available, bilic seems to like attacking fullbacks. Note the scary red flag is down to Jenks being on loan and not being able to play vs parent club.
Azpi most reasonably priced Chelsea defender, I think that you could save money and use it to boost the attack, you other defenders are good enough that a downgrade won't hurt, PVA would give attacking returns and an extra million so spend on attacking players.

Tadic doubling with Wanyama I have considered both as options, I would be wary of doubling in a team in one position. While PPG for both are reasonable enough that it could pay off, I might favour a Saints forward with a cheap midfield for better balance.
Silva and Hazard I can't argue that they will likely get points, but the question is are they compromising your team. If you compare Fabregas and Hazard I would not pay 2.5 for the difference, I think Silva may be assisting Sterling a lot and Goals beat assists and may be used even start OOP vs WBA.
Would try to have a united Midfield, even Young or Schneiderlein, you get the Utd lineup before the 1st 3 GW deadlines and they have great fixtures.

Forwards Benteke/Lukaku/Pelle level player to replace you worst forward, it is risky to have such a weak attack we usually don't get Austin and Kane level returns for that price.

                How does this update look?

I'm very undecided about the midfield. Firstly between milner and henderson.

And also between which Arsenal midfielder/s to have. I like Sterling, he's full of confidence at the moment after a great pre-season. I want to keep Chadli too as he plays 4 MD1 games in the first 4 games, so it's a great chance to bank a good score from him in at least 1 of those weeks. Sinclair for just 5.0 and Ritchie for just 6.0 who will both start are very nice options for me and I can't not have Hazard. Everyone basically has him, if I don't I will fall behind early potentially.

Hey guys would love some feedback on my initial team as gave up last year 🙂

    Mignolet Schmeichel Ruddy
Skrtel Shaw Toby Cedric Huth Bassong Francis Kaboul
Hazard Sterling Walcott Depay Mane Ritchie Albrighton Sinclair
Rooney Giroud Lukaku Sakho Deeney Wilson

Aguero will need to come in and I'm getting Tekkers GW 2 for Lukaku

    Any suggestions?

Goalies look ok to start with

Sunderland centerback could be minefield, so not sure on Kaboul.
Bassong you already have Ruddy I am convince that is likely enough unless he has good underlying stats to help him get point when he doesn't get a cleanie.
Toby I guess would be the spurs defender to have it would seem, if you must have one that is.
Skrtel and Shaw to Kosc and Jenks or Jenks and Williams with £1m to spend on clearing out deadwood.
Shaw I would be cautious if you want for the season he missed the whole of last season injured, so I would be concerned he may be injury prone.

Albrighton I'd try and turn into Mahrez if you want a Leicester mid.
Walcott the Community Shield should give some clues, I worry that his injury history will catch up with him, but could prove golden. Consider Ozil can get 4/5 points in a game he doesn't score or assist, Walcott as striker would make double Arsenal mids an intriguing option..

Hazard is he worth £2.5m more than Cesc?

Mane I would downgrade to Tadic/Hendo/Milner/Siggy/Wijnaldum/Payet/Chadli I am not convinced he will be Value at that price compared to what else is out there
Sinclair on my Watchlist for sure I'm waiting for the dust to settle at villa before I will sign any of the villains.

Giroud will he be 1st choice striker, if yes he's is a good choice, but Walcott could take his spot. Would consider Pelle/Kane or a fit Costa if you can manage it instead!
Lukaku -> Benteke a reasonable luxury transfer, that may well pay off, no reason not have a few transfer to take advantage of the fixtures. I wouldn't put it past Lukaku to score against some of the bigger teams and blank against Watford. It might be that Lukaku is worth keeping and Going Giroud -> Benteke.

Look generally a solid basis to build your team from

        Great feedback thanks

        Kaboul can be any Sunderland
        Bassong is just a holder
I like Skrtel for playing second days, it's why I went Toby
Shaw will be gone come gw5 eyeing Williams and Lescott
Walcott is just in for the start, I may even try squeeze Sanchez
I like Mane for explosive points playing second day too
Sinclair just scored a Hattie 😉
Giroud again is just in for the start and will be replaced by Kun somehow

I may change Hazard to open funds

        1. Uberscout
          • 9 Years

Fair play with Sinclair the Hattie is tempting but history is full of pre-season wonders and who knows what the Villa side looks like when Sherwood stops spending. He is competing for a couple of budget midfield slot and we are making educated at this stage, At 4.5-5.5 there are many intriguing option, there are many intriguing options and the Hattie doesn't bring him straight into my team, but it certainly strengthens his appeal, I haven't watched any Villa since the cup final. I'm favouring players I think can get 4 points in UFPL when they blank in FPL!!

Liverpool have are very good for MD2/MD3 games and Tadic has Pens and set piece for £1m less. Mane could get returns I just don't see him keeping up with the £8.5-9m and clearing outperforming £6.0-7.5m. That said I will not enjoy not owning him, Perhaps I will have Pelle/Tadic as a saints asset Newcastle and Vitesse games will no doubt help decide.
Tadic 4.5PPG vs Mane 4.6PPG does not justify a million extra.
I like Mane as option but last season suggests he seems overpriced compared to what else is available on current evidence,
Explosive player can often mean they have a sequence like 2,7,3,2,4,2,5,1,11,8,2,3,5,2,2,14,3,on MD1 this isn't a problem if he is sporadically scoring point to occasionally be useful but it is if you are considering ditching 4 or 5 points and he isn't delivering it will drive you nuts.

Kun is the most Awkward player in UFPL his injury record says no way am I spending that for those hamstrings, his goal record says you'll be hiding behind the couch if you don't get him. If he does get injured you probably have to spend £13m on Kane/Costa/Rooney. I'd be hoping that Costa will get similar returns. Costa got 6.7 PPG vs Kun 7.2PPG and the £2.0m should likely make up for the difference if similar returns persist this season..

To go with one both or neither Kun and Haz/Sanchez could prove season defining. GW4 is going to be a real headache to select the squad.

Look like it could be reasonable, I haven't checked how balanced it is for MD2/MD3 appearance that's on you to decide.
I'm looking at players for RMUT's and thinking can they get the necessary return at that price point.
By game-week 5 so much will have changed but as individual options they look reasonable,
That draft is lacking Utd attackers assuming you mean C.Wilson and not J.Wilson 🙂 and there are many players who could prove more reliable pics and transfer and injuries will inevitably turn our teams on there head, but that is what the transfers are for.

If I had that lot game-week 5 and they play 3000 minutes each this season I would expect to finish top 100 comfortably, assuming no players are drastically exceeding all previous returns over the season. They are players that should see you consistently beat the average most weeks by a margin that should keep in contention if used in the right way,

Will probably look to have 9-12 transfers saved and I will start thinking GW5 when setting up GW4 and we have a transfer deadline, Injuries and the opening game to help shape our opinion.

The initial squad once transfers are done with for the first phase of game won't decide who wins, but they will show who is likely to be dead money. Setting up the MD1 team and bench to compliment each other is key to maximising returns. Correct strategic use of captain change and substitutes is another point in which the skilled manager can gain significant advantage over the season.

You efforts should pay off with a good finish but while I am more confident of a UFPL top 1% than a top 5% in FPL if the key members or your squad gets crocked then you find yourself scoring losing ground every week like a well known member of this site did if you don't act, although IIRC they started with 2 playing keepers so that didn't help them. Can't do much if you get injuries, but you can choose to not sign players who have a long injury histories. You can lose a few point for a loan or risk a big gap opening up as you struggle to field a decent bench.

    Hi
New to this wonderful site and forum. I read through this awsome thread, and tried to use alot of the input given here.
Is it possible that you guys can rate my team:

    http://imgur.com/MSbePLI

    A couple of notes:
    * I went for 3 playing GK (1 star and 2 md)
    * I didnt splash out alot of cash on defenders (2 semi star and the rest was med - low)
    * I tried to fit in alot of pointhunters in the midfield (Hazard, Silva, Cazorla, Fab).
    * Walcott will be transfered within the next couple of weeks.
    * In the attack I wnet for 2 stars, 2 med which will surely get some playing time and 2 fodder players.
    * Im planing to use alot of transfers before GW4. I'll try and get Aguero, and perhaps Sanchez!

    Question:
    1. Have I spent to little on defenders?
    2. Cazorla vs. Øzil?
    3. Is the attack to weak?

Think your defence is ok in terms of budget but I'd be wary of doubling up eg arsenal and Leicester. Especially arsenal as you have 2 Mids already- that will mean arsenal players taking up 4 spots on your bench in week 1. Id downgrade either Cech or Mert, prob the latter as he may not be nailed. Consider alternatives for same price for either Huth or Schmeichel too.

Attack is a bit weak imo. I'd consider upgrading one of them and maybe downgrading one of the Mids to find it if necessary. Maybe Chadli seeing as you have 2 other Spurs already.

As for the Caz vs Ozil question - I'll have to pass on that one!!

        Thx for the rating!

So if I removed lets say Walcott and Merte, who would you suggest I should replaces them with? Any good tips?

"Consider alternatives for same price for either Huth or Schmeichel too. "
This I dont understand, can you please give me a bit more information why you think it would be an good idea to replace these two, with players with same value?

Upgrading an attacker and downgrade Chadli makes sense at that I will look into!

I'd actually keep Wally, at least for the first week. I've got him and Ramsey atm. You could swap Mert for Van Aanholt perhaps and swap O Shea, who might lose his place, for another 4.5 def, eg from Norwich who have decent fixtures to start.

I wasn't very clear about Leicester, sorry. I just meant that having two Leicester players at the back might be overkill. Both Huth and Schmeichel are individually good choices but maybe consider swapping one for a 4.5 from another team. A minor issue really, could always leave it for the first four weeks whilst Leicester have decent fixtures

Robin makes some great comments, some additional thoughts:
      - team balance in terms of cost is very similar to how I normally setup, so spend is about right. You can make tradeoffs in terms of upgrading an attacker and downgrading a defender, etc, if you like but overall seems more than fine
      - 4 Arsenal players and 3 Chelsea will give you bench issues when both of these play after MD1. See game week 2.
      - I'm an Ozil fan this year, but he's being hyped up right now. Cazorla is probably more consistent with his set pieces, it's a tough call.

I think he's a good shout while you've got 16 transfers to play with in the first 4 weeks - he's in my squad! Could double up with Ozil till the end of the transfer window then swap Wally out if he's not getting regular starts. That's my intention, except probably going with Ramsey instead of Ozil

He's worth the risk at start for sure.

Any chance of a glimpse of your squad please? Can throw some bogeys in if you don't want to give away secrets.

But mainly want to see structure of money and explosiveness v creativeness?

          No worries:

          Mig, 4.5, 4.5
          Ivan, PVA, Williams, Kolarov (!), Cedric, 3 x 4.5
Haz, Fab, Wally, Ramsey, silva, Ritchie, 2 x 4.5
          Rooney, Pelle, Luka, deeney, 2 x 5.0

Probably won't keep 2 arsenal and 2 Chelsea after transfer window ends

Maybe play Oxlade instead of Wally. Oxlade seems to be in the right form, and I think Wenger wants him in start 11. He is also 3 mill cheaper which gives room for ex. a better attacker.

Looks like a competitive squad with plenty of big hitting options. You'll find that Bentaleb, Wanyama, Martin, Hooper and one of your keepers end up in the reserves every week meaning your rotation is limited to the same players each week. Not necessarily a bad thing if it means you get the big hitters that you are looking for.

I'd probably downgrade one of your more expensive defenders and upgrade your 4.5m fodder to players with points potential.

          Saylor > Coates
          Wanyama/Bentalab > Sinclair
          Hooper > Jerome Ighalo

But overall pretty good, trouble comes when you try to fit Kun in.

    RMT Please:

    Ruddy, Steklenburg, Adrian/Krul

Azpilicueta, Fonte, Cedric, Clyne, S Taylor, Bassong, Williams, Morgan

Mahrez, Henderson, Hazard, B Johnson, Ritchie, Sanchez, Matic, Puncheon

Aguero, Kane, Benteke, Jerome, Deeney/Wilson, Berahino

Couple of players not 100% certain on. But looking to start with a fairly solid team and then transfer out a premium player if needed.

And aim is to start with the following:

      Ruddy
      Fonte, Azpi, Cedric
Henderson (v), Hazard (c), Matic, Johnson
      Jerome, Kane, Benteke

Aguero, Mahrez, Puncheon, Ritchie, Clyne, Berahino, Steklenburg

Your midfield looks light, relying on Hazard and Sanchez to score a lot of points. The other 6 are pretty soft options. You've also spent a lot on the forwards with Aguero, Kane and Benteke who you'll need to play every week, making the others likely bench warmers. If you're committed to Aguero, Hazard and Sanchez as premium players then the budget doesn't stretch much further but you could downgrade Haz to Fab, Sanchez to Walcott (for example) and use that to upgrade some of those midfielders.

Bit of tinkering to the following earlier:

          Ruddy, Steklenburg, Krul

Azpilicueta, Dann, Fonte, Huth, Cedric, Alderweireld, O’Shea, Clyne

Hazard, B Johnson, Henderson, Eriksen, Cazorla, Sigurdsson, Mahrez, Puncheon

Jerome, Berahino, Kane, Defoe, Deeney/Wilson, Aguero

Slightly stronger options across defence by switiching Ivanovic out for Azpilicueta.

Midfield is now less reliant on 2 players and the attack is still given a few options to rotate alongside Kane/Aguero when they are both fit.

I like it a lot better. You can even have Aguero on your bench GW1 in case he ends up playing in that Monday game.

            Is Dann nailed?
O'Shea I think people are saying Coates is most nailed of the CBs.
Replace Fonte, one Southampton defender is enough and you have the goalkeeper as well.

Eriksen no worth it at £1.5m over Chadli
Hazard I really think that 2.5 extra with Fab is the way to go. Silva higher PPG that Hazard as well with a saving of £1.5m.

Jerome, Defoe are players I would not count on long term. What has Jerome done to demonstrate he is Premier League striker material.
Sakho > Berahino particular with fixtures.

No Man Utd, may I point out that if Depay, Young, Mata, Darmian...etcetera play you will have the teamsheet and formation prior to the first 3 game-weeks. You can put in reserve or sell. GW 4 they are 1 of 2 sunday fixtures. On paper the united fixtures look good.

Too many players I would not trust with fitness, or performance.
No need to start with Kun, you can go with potentially knowing Rooney will start pre-deadline or waiting on an injury prone striker who hasn't had a pre-season to get up to speed and he is away vs Pulis if he does play and then faces Chelsea.
Rooney vs Villa is going to be a hugely popular GW2 captaincy most likely.
Benteke vs Bournemouth is another promising fixture GW2 (affordable without Kun)
Even if Kun was fully fit, Mourinho and Pulis know how to defend.
By the Watford game, it will likely be the time to consider if Kun Justifies his price.

Another thing Silva 0.6PPG fewer than Kun but £3.0m cheaper with an extra £3.0m that it could be that Silva or Sterling and £4.0m are going to lead to a squad that scores you more.

Strong squad. Seems a bit of a waste having Cedric stuck in your reserves for this week but I can see why you've done it as your bench is strong. An option to consider in situations like that is to put a big hitter matchday 2 (or 3) player that you would defo want to play in your starting XI instead of on the bench, at the expense of a weak matchday 1 option. That would free up a place on your bench

Looks pretty solid to me - have decent players spread across all match days and that should continue as I think Liverpool and Arsenal are playing late quite often at start.

You might be right in using the transfers to get Kun - I can't decide whether to just start with him or not.

Looks good, I think everyone you have is either in my squad or on my shortlist for transfers. I've not gone for Hazard or Ivanovic yet due to price, but can see how they could both get off to a good start. I like your Silva choice given Man City's nice fixtures (match day wise, not opponent wise). My captains this week will be Rooney, Walcott and Sterling.

This may be a very naive UFPL question so forgive me! If I switch my captain from Hazard to someone who either hasn't played today (ie. De Gea) or won't play tomorrow (ie. Jenkinson) does my VC (Vardy) then get the captaincy? I'm assuming so but not sure.

Got shot down very unceremoniously when I asked elsewhere! Apparently any captain changes invalidate the VC. UFPL has a message on to that effect when you make those changes to make you aware but I hadn't tried it at that point so didn't know.

Needless to say I changed my captain. Ended up putting it on Pelle, which went fairly well.

I've only used one transfer so far and I was just re-reading the rules on how the August transfers roll over to make sure I understood them.

I thought they'd get reset to zero at the end of the gameweek 4 deadline on 12th September, but the way the rules are written it sounds like they'll be reset once the transfer window closes at the end of August, which is Monday night/Tuesday morning. It's quite specific: "Unused transfers are carried over but will be reset to 0 at the end of the August [and January transfer windows]."

I was hoping to wait until after the international break was over to use all of my transfers. Have I got this wrong? I'm currently 177th overall and I don't want to mess it up over something stupid like misreading the rules.

Last year you had until the start of GW5 to use the transfers and I think the rules were worded the same way. I'm certainly assuming we've got until then! Admin-wise I would imagine it would be difficult for UFPL towers to prevent changes being made mid-way through anyway

Cheers both. That was pretty much what I thought too. I played last year as well and I thought it had to be the next deadline where the transfers were wiped out.

That wording just made me slightly nervous though. They really should change it.

I made a few non-international player transfers anyway and left a few spares to use before the gm5 deadline. I was reasonably happy with my squad, so unless there are a few injuries I'll just be doing a bit of tinkering.

Not doing so good this year as about 4,500th. Last season I was in the top 5 to 10 for a few months but what ive learnt is you can catch up quite easily. Dont have too many top draw strikers as you won't be able to play them and you will waste funds. Dont under estimate the importance of defenders who fill up those points over the course of 2 to 3 match days and NEVER miss a deadline....easier said than done. Great game.
