Would you WC if you had this team or is it worth fixing with a few hits?

    Schmeichel, Hennessey
    Coates, Kos, Francis, Cedric, Saylor
    Hazard, Ayew, Sterling, Mane, Fletcher
    Rooney, Benteke, Sakho

Definitely not a WC situation. Maybe a - 8. Downgrade Koscielny and upgrade Rooney(if you want Kun). You definitely have to improve the defense in general, though.

Or is there anything else I should do with my remaining FT to make funds for Aguero?

Can we have some discussion on the first half of the season wildcard? I bet there's a fair few people holding off wildcarding but don't realise they lose it after GW19.

So what are the benefits of waiting until December? Do you think you can make back the points and value being lost by not playing the WC early?

A WC team this week is likely to have had the following scorers:

    Kompany
    Sanchez - Ayew - Payet - Mahrez
    Aguero - Gomis - Lukaku

Those GW1 bandwagon returns are ridiculous!

Don't necessarily have to wait until December.

GW11/12/13 provide fixture swings for Everton, United and Chelsea.

Can we hulk this or get one of the scouts to start a hot topic, Andy? I'm really struggling to see a viable strategy to delaying the WC even if only 4 or 5 squad changes are required.

Fixture swings can be handled with 2 x FT's!

Sanchez hasn't played 90 minutes yet. Aguero hasn't played 90 minutes yet. Speroni isn't back (so we don't know if McCarthy will stay the #1 which at 4m would be tremendous). The transfer window is still open. 4 changes seems to me silly for a WC. 5, 6 7 that's another story.

Fair to say you could pull the trigger then.

I finished 23rd in the world two years ago after an early wildcard but have also finished Top1K after holding my WC.

I am on the fence as well but with 2 FTs will likely just take a -4 and make three changes.

              Cech/McCarthy

              Targett - Kolarov - Azpi - Coates - Huth

              Hazard - Ozil - Walcott - Mane - King

              Benteke - Rooney - Deeney

I will prioritize Walcott out, then Rooney, and then perhaps a defender or Deeney/Benteke. Not really the end of the world requiring 5+ changes in my opinion, could easily make 2-4 and be OK.

Presuming you bring in a player you want with each passing week, how many changes do you expect you'll need to make come GW7+ ?

For GW3 I will have Aguero, Benteke, Ayew, Ozil, Mane, Depay, Sakho, without taking a hit. Sanchez by GW5. When will I get better use of the WC exactly? 🙂

Don't know - I looked at your team and I don't think it's in dire shape, just my opinion. Rooney to Aguero for free (you have 4.5m in bank) would be my first move but don't really see the need for a WC when you have 15 fit players and can take out the ones out of form (Sinclair, Rooney, Ivanovic downgrade to Kolarov or Azpi, etc.) pretty easily.

It's not in dire shape... that's exactly my point. I can see me getting to GW19 and not ever needing the WC. BUT those players that used the WC in GW2-4 will have outscored me because this was the best time to use the first WC.

              NP.

I really am in a quandary. I can get to GW13 with one hit (maybe 2) and a squad I'm very happy with but there is also the question of team value.

Sitting here right now thinking (a) go now, (b) hold till the international break after the window is closed (and there will still be signings that will affect things), or (c) aim to get through to GW13.

I believe I will hold off the wildcard this week but it won't be easy to resist it. Mind you, after tonight's changes it will be easier. 🙂

An additional problem is I suspect quite a few wildcards are operative. That means the price change sites won't be accurate.

That's the thing sometimes, you just need to get past the price changes and then it suddenly feels better.

I did that last night with Gomis but then Aguero played, Silva did well, I accidently went double Norwich defence and I thought what the hell!

As you know though - it's been burning a hole 🙂

Yes. Mine too now. But I'm pretty sure I will resist it. I think I'd rather take a hit or two. My squad is not in bad shape, I have 4 in-form mids at least (Ozil, Payet, Mahrez, Lens) and there is nothing wrong with Pelle or Kane either.

I'm in the same boat. I'm pretty sure I can make it to GW6 taking one transfer at a time. Hazard out after GW1 (purely based on not feeling confident to captain him in the short term), has freed up funds for Aguero and there's my captain sorted so other transfers become less pressing.

I probably sound like a scratched record, but our mentality needs to shift from how it was in previous seasons; I think the first WC now needs to be played to get your squad scoring 'optimum' points as early as possible. By having a GW1 team that was reasonable, I feel I've done worse than if I'd picked a stinker of a team and wild carded almost immediately.

We talk about the early part of the season as almost being attritional; make it through to the latter GW's taking a couple of transfer hits. I'm not sure if that is the winning strategy this year.

                  Well...

Before the season I firmly planned to wildcard between GW4 and GW5. So an early wildcard was very much on the cards.

Having a (relatively) poor start is one of the things that sways me to the later option. My team is not bad as it stands, there are probably 3 players that need changing and 2 more that I'd like to change but aren't essential.

I can't gain a jump by wildcarding now to get more or less the same team as everyone else. But maybe I can manage it cleverly and gain a jump later (GW13 looks a good moment on the basis of fixtures) when others can't react so easily because their wildcard is gone.

I don't fear the points loss. I think my team (with maybe a couple of hits over the next 2-3 weeks) will perform as well as a wildcard team will. What I fear is the money squeeze. If I have 2 or 3 drop and don't have 2 or 3 risers that I'd like in due course that would be a big swing.

But I think I'll manage to take a strategic view and play the long game. 🙂

Thanks for the OP by the way, talking about it helps in the decision making process.

Yes, I think that is it - I'm looking at Ivanovic and Coates and fearing a 0.1 price drop. On the attacking side of things, I'm not going to have Gomis for the Sunderland clash, but then again, I will have Ayew. It's so easy to fall into the trap of wanting your squad 'just so' and the wildcard offers that.

You're right, I'm keeping my head above water with the squad I have so it's taking it one week at a time and perhaps using the WC to steal a march over the next band of wagons 🙂

Well, there you go. Ivanovic and Coates are two of my main problems too. Addressing those plus getting a City mid and Aguero are the long and short of it.

Ivan I would like to shift right now for Kompany and I can't without wildcarding. But is keeping Ivan for the time being really such a bad thing? I don't think he'll drop.

Coates must go tonight though I think, before a price drop. So I'll probably do Fabregas to Silva and Coates to 4.5 (Richards?) tonight for -4 and wait a week for Aguero as I originally planned.

Ruth makes a massive point in that as the window is not shut and all the new signings have not been integrated into their teams we really don't know a whole lot more now than we did before gw1.

Personally I think it is madness to play it before the window shuts and we see a bit more how teams are setting up and who is going to be good defensively etc.

If you think about it your wc will probably be most effective in reshaping your team to get the best budget players in as one or two hits will get you the big guns changed around. If we accept this premise then we need more information to know which teams will be the ones to go to for these players. We've had two fixtures where unsettled teams at varying levels of fitness and match sharpness have played each other and I don't think the results from these are dependable enough to make predictions on for the next 17-26 weeks.

Ps I did have twitchy fingers but I've come to my senses and am just going to use freebies and the odd hit to get me through the next few weeks at least until window closes.

The voice of reason, Dino 🙂 Airing my laundry on FFS has helped, and I think I'll follow suit. My team is still very well set - there are plenty of well priced options this year, and I'm sure more to come before the transfer window closes. Thanks for commenting!

If you wait until December you could set your team up to handle possible rotation. I seem to recall that shortly after the first half ends there are a couple of gameweeks that are only two days apart.

It all depends on your initial starting team. I never WC unless I am going to make at least 5-6 changes. In my case, I have had a poor start but really only want to make 4 changes (Rooney, Walcott + 2 others) so not worth it for me since I have 2 FTs.

Don't forget the real life transfer window is still open, there will be big injuries, European competitions, and some starting XIs are still in flux with players just returning - you could certainly play it now if you have 6+ players to swap out, but for 3, 4 or 5 I think it's better to take a -4 or two and be patient.

That said, in my 11 years have realized that this game is a lot about "confidence" and if you WC early and have confidence from that - that could lead to a good season, so really just depends.

I think in previous seasons, I've always known that saving my WC for a DGW is the best thing to do. Most end up having to take a point hit to be well prepared and the temptation to use it early isn't always well rewarded. But with the rule changes this year, we're counting on one of the game weeks before GW20 being a more opportunist time that GW1-4.

I've got a niggling feeling that despite my team not needing many changes, I've already been left behind.

Fair but couldn't you accomplish the same task with a -4 if you have two free transfers? I like the concept of building team value early and all, but it's all about players who will score points - I don't WANT to get rid of Hazard or Mane even if they do drop in price or not gain, as I expect big things from them, just as I did two weeks ago before the season started.

I find it harder this year to justify a -4. If you count the pre-season, in effect we have 3 WC's for 38 gameweeks. You could do GW 1-13, play your first WC, GW14-27, play your second WC, GW28-38, or similar. A couple of -4's doesn't feel right this year (and I have often taken transfer hits in seasons past).

Yes but FPL isn't as cookie cutter as this. Sometimes a -4 - if you give the Captain's armband to the player you acquired, or if it's for a DGW or to catch a price rise and avoid a drop (netting 0.2) is useful.

For me, the transfer window is still open and other than Walcott, the rest of my players have all started but just not performed amazingly well.

Just a thought to consider: If I got rid of Mane or Hazard this week and they each scored a goal on the counter attack with their blistering pace next week but I lost 0.2m by not bringing in Mahrez or Ayew so be it if each of those score 2 pointers. Much rather have the goals than 0.2m in the bank.

Of course. I'm not actually clamboring for Mahrez, but Ayew, Payet and Gomis are excellent picks imo. Some of the transfers made by mid-table teams are outstanding. There's no longer this huge gap between the top 4 and other teams. They are very good players that are not yet priced as very good players because it's their first PL season.

I think it's a bit premature to bracket those players in the very good/top player bracket. Every season some players start well but usually they don't sustain it. As above I think it is dangerous to draw conclusions from the fixtures to date due to the variables involved.

Maybe the actual top player/underpriced gem has yet to reveal themselves?

It's very possible with new signings still to come in. The bandwagons this year aren't the Naismith, Ulloa variety (can't think of great examples at the mo), many of them are genuine proven quality - Payet & Ayew from Marseille, Mahrez & Albrihton from last year once Pearson had found a winning formation for Leicester. Gomis taking his chance, Man U defenders benefiting from Schneiderlin / Carrick / Schweinsteiger screening them, etc.

I would argue they could be exactly the same almost.

Ayew 10 goals in France last year hardly worldy class and piquet had an extremely poor goal scoring record but created a lot of chances (I'm not sure what quality of chances were or the quality of defending he was doing it against was like though).

Mahrez and alby have almost equalled last year's returns already and are a clear example of having come up against transitional teams who they punished for their ill preparation (3 goals in first 25mins v sunderland before sunderland got some modicum of shape on their defence and 2 goals in the first half v wham where Oxford was a joke in midfield.

Re gomis I think he could do ok but it will be a case of get off when the form stops as I don't see him scoring a hell of a lot more than the likes of diouf at Stoke even. Swansea have had a lot of Fortune playing most of their two games so far v 10 men and going on last year they didn't create a lot of goalscoring opps so it is highly debateable whether they can keep this attacking form up too.

Re Utd defence I think these could be decent with lvg low risk strategy when in possession so I picked one of their def from the start but I'm prepared to jump ship if it doesn't look like continuing.

I am not saying these wagons won't be good btw just playing devils advocate. There will be plenty of players that have two game spells where they score highly during the season and plenty of teams that have two good results which are atypical of their form so I would not place too much emphasis on the ones that are doing it now just as I won't when Marcus gayle is doing it later in the season.

Surely there is more market activity at this time of the year due to a higher number of active players who have yet to lose interest.

Add this to the number of players who have performed brilliantly in two games with the fixtures to continue to do so.

They will rise this week and should they continue to perform they will continue to rise as the games top scorers.

Switching out negative nti players and replacing them with risers, losing your depreciating assets for ones of the rise could see those who wildcard now having a significant value advantage in the next 4 weeks time.

Buying form players for no hit could also give a significant point advantage too.

Man City's fixtures take a turn for the better from GW4. Kompany is nailed on.

Mahrez offers excellent value when he was 5.5m and if you see the way he's playing at the minute, he's dribbling past people in the box like Hazard. Form over fixtures, every day.

Yup - I am currently thinking of Walcott to Mahrez and Rooney to Aguero for free.

If Rooney brings home a big haul against Newcastle I won't be happy (he is capable of it despite his poor form) but it is still a logical move after seeing Aguero and City's movement today.

Walcott not playing is an obvious transfer out.

I had originally planned to do Rooney to Aguero in GW4 but may accelerate the plan by one week.

Thanks I was actually quite impressed when I read it back again.

I always wc early due to me being well a bit kneejerkand loving a transfer.

However, this simple rule change has turned the game upside down. The old status quo of keeping your wildcard may not necessarily be the best course of action but for those set in their ways the may see an early wildcard as weak or poor play. Maybe it is now THE play?

            Targett - Kolarov - Azpi - Coates - Huth

With two FTS you could freshen that for -4 say.

Cheap players are never out of reach though - so Payet, Gomis, Ayew, etc. can always be picked up later for 0.2m or 0.3m more - not the end of the world.

The only real "out of reach" players could be Aguero or Sanchez, but I am happy with Ozil at the moment for 8.5m and so the only player I really yearn/desire for is Aguero, and Silva to a lesser extent. Don't mind keeping Hazard and don't mind getting out Deeney/Benteke in 1-3 weeks after taking another look at them.

So who else is really going to be "out of reach" for me? Or for you?

                  Sorry only seeing this.

It is the collective of players rising.

Mahrez, Aguero, Kompany, Payet, YYT and those dropping.

I'd need a hit to get Aguero whilst all the rest rise and others drop that I own.

Playing the wildcard let's me have a collective mix that isn't possible next week or the week after.

But to be honest my scoring has been crap. I see a lot on here saying hey I have started really badly but I'm keeping the faith using FTS and hits and well maybe that's the way to play it maybe it isn't who am I to judge time can judge that.

But for me I'd like go turn a corner and adjust to this season and climb the ranking over the next six weeks with a stronger team with a rising value.

We will see at the finish line which option was best.

      Good topic.

The WC rule change has lead to me activating the wildcard tonight.

In previous seasons I'd always want to hold out until the second part of the season. The way this season has gone there are too many rises and falls, and I think there is little harm in Wildcarding now. Cutting losses etc.

Well, this is good reasons to WC

      - Your team is sh#t, needs big rebuild (can happen anytime)
      - You are to far off the template (template not set until at EARLIEST GW4-5)
      - During an international break, to ride the price changes during two weeks (one soon and one after GW8)
      - To rebuild your team when the fixtures changes big time.
      - Big changes on demand. Injuries or after 1 sept when window closes.

If you are not in the "your team is sh#t"-section, wait until it seems to get sh#t or the last one happens. Other wise chose the middle ones that seems to suit you best.

IMO, it's worth a hit or two now early to get on som bandwagons or the avoid a nasty price drop

I'll put it this way. I think a sh!t GW1 team, wildcarded to something akin to the attacking players above, will be of better use of the first WC than the points and value gained in me having a mediocre start and saving until GW10-19.

The question for me is how long is too long to wait
The one rule that always seems to work on here is form over fixtures
For all of us who have had a poor start we obviously have a load of big money players not producing, some of us also have low money players failing, it's more than likely that some of them will start returning points at some stage, but which ones and when?
I have (had) Rooney, Walcott, hazard, kos, mane, sakho, lens all failing and some of those in teams that are not returning either. Therefore how long is too long to hold all them and watch the toure, silva and gomis teams fade into the distance?

Losing value on Hazard or Mane isn't a big deal if you have faith they will be top 10 FPL scorers at the end of the season - which they will. If you aren't selling them anyway, doesn't matter.

What if Swansea buy a striker at the deadline and Gomis goes to the bench? A lot can change...

Yes, you've phrased that much better than I have been struggling to. Many of us are slowly adapting our teams to form and fixtures, where as the bandwagons look very viable keepers at the minute (i.e. on the whole, they're not short term players scoring who I'd have no interest in 4 weeks down the line).

      Azp* - Kos* - Ced - Coa* - Hut ( * out for Dar - Kom - Mer)

      Wal* - Man - Pay - Rit* - Mah ( * out for Sanc - Tou)

      Roo* - Ben* - Dee ( * out for Agu - Kon)

Seven changes in total, whats bothering me the most is the absence of a Swans player in my new team.

What are your thoughts on this? Is the WC worth it considering price changes?

Cheers Demi. Felt it was worth a discussion to see how players with better ranks than me were tackling the surprising form of Chelsea, Southampton in particular and to a lesser extent, Sunderland (defence), Leicester (attack), Swansea and West Ham.

for me there are only two reasons to wild card, to prepare for a double game week (second wc only this season), or because you have a complete injury/form crisis.

nobody has the latter after two games and so whilst I can believe people wcarding now (or indeed already) will catch the early bird, they in turn have no way of making wholesale changes further down the line if disaster strikes

I have not had a good start by any stretch of the imagination and somebody in my mini league just WCarded to bring in kun, sanchez, mayrez and ayew this week. But he's still only 25 points ahead of me overall and now has no chelsea, pool or united cover.

Pool haven't even played a home game yet. Is Hazard really not going to still be one of the top 5 players in the game? Yes a few transfers can sort out situations, but a wild card can turn an ailing side into a world beater overnight if used well. I just don't see almost any of the early season big hitters bar City (and it is SO early) carrying on at this pace. Mahrez and Ayew aren't going to score 20 goals. And either of them do, I'll donate another £20 to Demi's charity...

"for me there are only two reasons to wild card, to prepare for a double game week (second wc only this season), or because you have a complete injury/form crisis."

In seasons past, I would agree with you. This season, we have 2 distinct wildcards and the first is one that we use or lose before any DGW crops up. So, that leaves injury/form crisis.

It's questionable that a 4 or 8pt hit can't resolve an injury or form crisis. Using the WC now or even last week, would see you back:

        - the United defence,
        - City's attacking players,
        - perhaps even triple up on Swansea
        - invest in Leicester and West Ham's midfield

Form AND fixtures are favourable for these teams, and GW2 alone saw all the bandwagons return points again.

Ruth made a very good point that we're playing catch up and we're not going to make inroads with the same players. We have to cherry pick the long term picks and hope we'll get another opportunity before GW20 to use the wildcard.

Putting aside the "catching price rises"and "horrible start" arguments for a moment, the other argument for a wc would be to get a do-over for my defense. I put a lot of thought into my defensive rotation, but not much has worked (including putting Gomez on the bench gw1). With the wc, I would be far less likely to get Coates, Huth, Jenkinson or Cedric, and could also reconsider the Ruddy/Butland rotation.
      Still on the fence...

Yes, good point. I think one of the main advantages of an early WC is being able to shape your defence with what we now know after 2 to 3 gameweeks. I have Coates stinking up my squad and it's likely going to need a hit to remove him outside of a WC.

Realistically, I can expect at least 2 players to lose value over the next couple of weeks if I do not take a couple of hits. I could prioritise these over attacking moves but this arguably, will cost me more points.

As I can get Aguero for free, I think I am going to muddle along, WC ever at the ready.

I'm not sure I can hold on until the weekend with Ritchie and Silclair sales happening fast.

Should I transfer one or both of them for Mahrez and Montero? Or should I go Rooney + Azpilicueta > Aguero + Ward?

I think the priority has to be Aguero - despite up against a great CB pairing in Jagielka and Stones.

Ritchie and Sinclair have a great fixture in GW4 so stay strong!

Thanks. But I have pulled the trigger already. 🙂 Actually, I was surprised by Ritchie's price drop (Mahrez/Ayew factor, I know), he didn't look THAT threatening as I expected, but he did alright. Sinclair, though, looked completely action-shy rooney-ish.

      So for me, yes.
Just did Hazard + Rooney -> Aguero + yaya (-4) 20min ago. would be outpriced otherwise and they where my plan for GW4 and not now. But had 1FT and 2.5 ITB to do Aguero now if I had to.

I've asked for opinions on Redmond vs Shelvey (these are the only two I'm considering before people suggest others), and most people are going for Shelvey.

Someone care to sell Shelvey to me? I'm aware his stats have been great across these past two games, but the way I see it is that's partly down the fact that Ki has been out and so Jack Cork has played the deeper role, allowing Shelvey to get higher up the pitch.

Redmond on the other hand is the star man and plays in a more attacking role than Shelvey, who at the end of the day is still a centre mid. Although Redmond does of course play for the worse team.

    Opinions on these points?
