Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 2 – Sunday

Sergio Aguero returns to the scoresheet and the Fantasy Football radar, prompting many to hit the transfer trail as City’s early season form continued in style with a 3-0 win over champions Chelsea. Meanwhile, in the Arsenal camp, Alexis Sanchez compounded the need for squad surgery with a performance at Selhurst Park that reminded us of his own Fantasy appeal. Here’s the notes from Sunday’s encounters…

Aguero Paves The Way For City Victory

Sergio Aguero announced his return to the starting lineup with a goal as Manuel Pellegrini’s side recorded a convincing 3-0 victory over Chelsea.

Last season’s Golden Boot winner carved out a wealth of shooting opportunities at the Etihad, with no striker mustering more attempts (seven) than Aguero this Gameweek. Non-owners will doubtless now be clamouring to recruit the 13.0-priced marksman ahead of City’s excellent run of fixtures (eve, WAT, cry, WHU, tot, NEW, BOU) – particularly when the league’s other top-end forwards (Wayne Rooney and Diego Costa) have yet to find their groove.

Indeed, Aguero’s performance provided the catalyst for a frenzy of transfer activity which has seen him claim over 100,000 new owners in the Gameweek to this point. This is likely to lead to the Argentine’s first rise in price in the next 24-hours.

David Silva carded a brace of assists to compliment his assist against West Bromwich Albion – earning two bonus points in the process – while Yaya Toure combined well with Aguero to set him up for City’s opener. Both players currently sit around the 10% ownership mark, with Raheem Sterling (19% ownership) still the more favoured route into City’s attack. Sterling’s ownership is, however, in decline having sustained almost 50,000 sales in the Gameweek so far as a result of Silva and Toure’s recent returns.

Having failed to register a single goal last term, Vincent Kompany powered home his second header in as many outings, boosting his points tally to 25 for the season. In light of Chelsea’s faltering rearguard and the absence of Leighton Baines, the talismanic captain is emerging as a prime pick among the premium defenders. Kompany has claimed almost 80,000 new owners as price teeters on the brink of another FPL price rise to 6.2.

On that note, Aleksandar Kolarov (5.5) is becoming more difficult to ignore as an alternative. The Serbian’s rampaging runs look certain to harvest attacking returns given his propensity to join the attack and his service from a dead-ball. Gael Clichy’s return to the bench might deter potential investors due to the threat of rotation, with Pellegrini’s teamsheet at Everton of keen interest.

Blues Exposed As Hazard Falters

Eden Hazard blanked for the second Gameweek running as the Blues’ defence was picked apart by Manuel Pellegrini’s troops. Only Sunderland (26) have conceded more shots inside the box than Chelsea over the opening two Gameweeks, prompting Branislav Ivanovic’s 30.4% ownership to weigh up their options.

Hazard missed a golden opportunity to equalise with what was only his second attempt at goal across the opening two fixtures. In the wake of Alexis Sanchez’ starring display against Crystal Palace, some Hazard owners might be contemplating a straight swap for the explosive winger. The fact that Chelsea face off against West Brom and Palace in the next two Gameweeks bolsters the appeal of holding tight. However, Hazard has already been sold more than any other midfielder in the Gameweek to this point and is second only to Wayne Rooney in overall sales.

John Terry – who played every single minute of the previous campaign – was replaced by Kurt Zouma at half time, having struggled to contend with the pace and movement of City’s elusive forward line. Although that tactical decision is unlikely to portend a severe reduction in playing time, this new threat of rotation is certainly worth factoring in.

Sanchez Return Inspires Gunners Win

Olivier Giroud bounced back from a listless performance in Arsenal’s season-opener to open his account with a sublime first-time finish as Arsenal ran out 2-1 winners at Selhurst Park.

The France international was again favoured over Theo Walcott in the lone striker role, much to the dismay of the latter’s 6.8% ownership – who will now certainly be engineering exit plans – over 50,000 have sold Walcott on in the Gameweek with his price already dropping to 8.9.

Alexis Sanchez marked his first start of the campaign with an assist, after his header was diverted into the Eagles’ net by Damien Delaney. The Chilean livewire was a constant menace to the home defeat and, based on his display, is surely likely to cement “untouchable” status on the Arsenal teamsheet. Sanchez is still owned by under 10% of FPL managers to this point, despite heavy investment overnight.

Mesut Ozil edged ahead of Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla in the contest between Arsenal’s 8.5-priced midfielders, chalking up an assist and two bonus points for a seven-point haul. The German playmaker is arguably the least prone to rotation among the trio but has registered the fewest attempts at goal (three) in these early stages.

Hector Bellerin reclaimed a starting berth on his return from the treatment room. With match-ups against Newcastle United and Stoke City in the next three Gameweeks (LIV, new, STO), the Gunners should stand a decent chance of securing their first clean sheet of the season.

2 years ago Yaya Toure had a wonder season and accumulated 241 points,
Silva in the same season? 151.

If yaya is going to have a replica season, that 1.5 saved can make all the difference. I hope he does!

Agree on the Yaya over Silva call,

it creates space for Hazard and Sanchez. You don't want to put yourself in a position where you have to remove a city player to fit in hazard and that will happen if you have silva. HAZARD is HAZARD don't forget that. watch him score next week

having no Chelsea players in you're squad is such a risk, especially on the back of a 3-0 defeat to city, they are gonna come back firing

not sure thats worth the -4 or not.

I did almost the exact same transfer but lost Cazorla, only it was free as I carried one over from last week. Ozail n Rooney both have the potential to score next week, but as a long term transfer I like it, esp as you have Sanchez for Arsenal mid cover

Indeed, ditching Rooney ahead of Newcastle at home for a hit doesn't sit well with me, but with rises and falls I think it may be necessary, and he's been dire so far.

True, but it's more a necessary move to fund Aguero. Arsenal's fixtures aren't good, Ozil and Sanchez may be overkill, whereas City's fixtures are dynamite.

A couple of years back a ran a league called "Who wants to be a millionaire!?", the criteria for entering this league was that you must have had a overall rank over 1m after GW8 closed. Around 150 people entered this league and the idea behind it was to boost morale assure people that they werent alone and that FPL is a marathon and not a sprint.

The league was good fun and from memory the winner finished around 3k overall from a GW8 rank of 1.4m! Other notable stats were that around 15 finished in the top 10k and only between 5-10 finished with an overall rank greater than 500k (mostly likely gave up).

As much as i love being nostalgic (especially on here) the reason I am posting this is that a lot of people are downhearted with their current ranks. Do not fret, we have 36 GWs to go with chips and at least one wildcard. Yes, you might have had a bad start but so have most of the serious players. Take a deep breathe and step away from the wildcard button. Hazard will still be the games top points scorer.

PS as I said to shifty earlier, if there is still a significant number of us ranked over 1m in GW8 then ill start this league again this year.

    1. Doolittle
      • 11 Years
      8 years, 8 months ago

Agreed with the general point, but I don't think Hazard will be top points scorer, I think Sanchez and Aguero will outscore him comfortably (barring injuries). Also, we shouldn't be sucked into the idea of "season keepers". Just because Hazard will score well over the season, doesn't mean he's a good option at this moment.

      1. Kings of Lyon ★
        • 13 Years
        8 years, 8 months ago

Agree in principle with this. Hazard is only a season keeper imo because of his price. If you sell him he'll be very difficult to get back in.

      2. Venom Snake
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 8 months ago

Correct. The trick of FPL has always been knowing when to buy and sell players accordingly.
Hazard might be top scorer end of season, but there could be a run where he blanks in 5 game weeks where in the same period someone like Yaya is on a hot streak.
Then selling Yaya when his form dips to some new who is performing.

Only way to truly maximise points

How has fabregas looked and average position been? I cannot put Haz in as it destroys my team - but I can get Fabregas over Payet and keep a strong team (darmian down to Cedric)

Don't go for cover pick the best options and Fab is not that currently

Forget Fab. I started with him and benched him this gameweek. Plus Oscar is back next week.

typical Yaya. Was watching the game with some mates yesterday. Around the first goal, Yaya was just standing outside the box, not moving at all while everyone else was running around the trying to cover runs and mark the overlapping fullbacks.

Told my friends "watch yaya, he isn't moving at all...but bet you he gets a goal or assist". 5 seconds later...Aguero goal, Yaya assist.

      Fella knows what he's doing.

        Cheers.

Feels wrong going without Hazard and LEI's fixtures are looking good, but Toure looked sharp yesterday and last week, plus their fixtures are decent too. Mane will surely score soon...

        Really tough decision!

Both Oxford and targett's minutes will dry up as will Gomez potentially. Would think about having more reliable cheap defenders

Terrible start for me. Rank of 1.5M with just Ritchie to come. But last season, I think I fell as low as 1.9M after 3 or 4 weeks and finished 242! So keep the faith guys.

The secret I think is to wild card early, get the form players in and your team set up early, and not loose too much cash on players dropping.

Rank can easily be made up because I had 18 points last week but 55 points got me to 700k (but only one scouser will mean I will drop to 1M). Depends on your team because you need the likes of Silva, Hazard, Aguero and Sanchez with decent defenders.

Yaya at £8.6 suddenly looks a lot better than Hazard at £11.5

I am in full scale meltdown mode.

I had my doubts about Yaya, but i think i'm being mistaken. He looks more up for it and hungrier than i've seen in a while. Still fancy Hazard to come good, but he needs Chelsea to as well, whereas Yaya is part of a complete city side firing on all cylinders
