Sunderland and Spurs locks horns at the Stadium of Light in Sunday’s lunchtime kick-off, with both teams searching for their first victory of the campaign. The Black Cats recovered from a dreadful opening two Gameweeks – in which they shipped seven goals – to record consecutive draws, while Spurs are unbeaten since a defeat to Manchester United in the opening Gameweek.

Although Sunderland’s rearguard have been breached the most frequently this season – and conceded the most shots inside the box (49) – their attack has been quietly efficient at the other end, boasting the second best shot conversion rate (17.6%) of any team in the league. That being said, only rivals Newcastle United have fashioned fewer attempts inside the area (18), which suggests they’ll struggle to maintain that scoring rate unless they create more.

With only three goals to their name – despite ranking joint-top for big chances (nine) and fourth for shots on target (23) – Spurs’ finishing has flattered to deceive thus far. The fact that Sunderland have conceded five more shots inside the box (29) in their home fixtures than any team, though, should serve as encouragement for the North London club’s forward contingent.

McCarthy is looking an outstanding pick right now. Should be a shoe in to any team IMO.

Speroni was fit enough to play for the U21s, but the guy is 36. He conceded 3 goals against Huddersfield, and failed to make the bench yesterday. McCarthy on the other hand, has conceded more than 1 goal on only 1 occasion this season; against Arsenal.

He has also conceded only 1 against league leaders City, who have looked untouchable recently, as well as 1 against the reigning Champtions Chelsea, who have looked pretty woeful in fairness.

Pardrew brought him in and he has been starting him. That can only be a good sign.

Furthermore, Palace don't do clean sheets. That 2 in 25 or whatever the stat is has been mentioned on here each week this season. For an attacking side who don't really offer much defensively, conceding 1 goal per game is excellent.

Now, the fact you won't get clean sheets regularly is quite off putting, initially at least. McCarthy has scored some decent points this season due to the vast amount of saves he makes. He has registered 4 points on 2 occasions with a total of 15 points across 5 games. You can do the maths, that's an average of 3 PPG. Not bad for a 4.0 (now 4.1) keeper eh? Over the course of the season, if he continued to score similarly you would be looking at a total points score of around 114 (3 x 38). Factor in the fact there will be games with clean sheets and maybe penalty saves and you could bump that up by a dozen, maybe more.

Now we're looking at roughly the same amount of points the likes of Courtois scored last season.

Of course, we are only 5 weeks in, and the rest of the season is totally unpredictable. The initial signs are promising though.

Palace's fixtures in the long run look excellent too. After GW6, there is a run of about 3 months where they only face 2 'big' sides (Man U and Liverpool). Either way, you aren't exactly expecting a clean sheet, so tougher fixtures could be a positive due to the save points available.

In conclusion, I reckon McCarthy is the perfect 2nd keeper. Rotation rarely ever works and we always love a 4.0 keeper - a starting one is a bonus. I don't think his place in the starting XI is at risk unless he has some really bad games, but at 4.1m you can't go wrong.

It's the no CS thing that really puts me off.

Shame as I think you're basically right about his quality, probably just needs a bit more protection from the defence to make him a must have.

I think it's fair to say Palace will keep some clean sheets this season. They have a great run in a few weeks so I'd be surprised if they didn't keep any there.

The fact they aren't solid defensively means that you get lots of save points.

To be honest, this is ideal for a second keeper. Regularly get decent points (3-4) but don't get those big 6+ scores stuck on your bench.

Sorry to distract you from this spectacular game, but have no idea what to do with this and some opinions would be useful. Thank you very much.

    Myhill (McCarthy)
    Williams Francis Muniesa (Huth Mert)
    Sanchez Silva YYT Mahrez (Westwood)
    Aguero Gomis Wilson

    2 FTs, 2.1m ITB

Will definitely wait for Aguero and Silva news, but I'm pretty sure they're gonna be fine. No City defense is killing me, but I'd have to ship YYT or Silva out to get Kolarov and I'm not sure it's worth it.

    A) Mert > Dawson and save 1 FT
    B) Mert & YYT > Kolarov & Coutinho
    C) Mert & YYT > Kolarov & Ayew
    D) Something else

I managed to have this team (no WC, one hit):

    Panti / Henne
    Kolarov / Azpi / Gomez / Huth / Targett
    Yaya / Ozil / Mane / Chadli / Mahrez
    Kun / Sakho / Wilson

Nothing urgent in attack I guess, what should be my priorities in defense?

    A) Azpi > WBA defender
    B) Targett > WBA defender
