Now that we are eight weeks into the season, baseline Bonus Point System (BPS) per minute figures for defenders are starting to become more accurate. I thought that during this international break was the perfect time for me to get back on to it and get some updated figures. For those of you who haven’t encountered this before, a player’s baseline BPS/min is worked out by taking their total BPS score, which is used by Fantasy Premier League (FPL) to calculate bonus allocation, and then subtracting any attacking (goal/assist) BPS points and clean sheet BPS points from this. After taking on board feedback received in my last update, I’ve also removed any BPS points that players have had deducted for yellow cards, red cards and own goals.
This gives a more accurate figure and will help when deciding to pick between two players with a similar baseline BPS/min score. I then divide this figure by the total number of minutes played by the player which prevents cameos from skewing the data. This gives me a handy baseline BPS/min score for each player. To put it simply, a high baseline BPS/min score means a higher chance of that player getting FPL bonus points in a match, providing none of the other defenders in their team get any attacking returns. Another thing I have done this time is include the baseline BPS/min scores for goalkeepers as well. I removed any BPS points that goalkeepers received for penalty saves as well as yellow and red cards.

Conclusion
By adding goalkeepers it makes it easier for Fantasy managers to see whether a keeper or a defender is the best to draft in. Stoke’s Jack Butland, Sunderland’s Cesar Pantilimon, Boaz Myhill of West Brom, West Ham’s Adrian, Gomes of Watford and Norwich stopper John Ruddy all have higher baseline BPS/min scores compared to their teammates, meaning they are likely to receive bonus points when their team keeps a clean sheet. However, their baseline BPS/min scores are high for a reason – they make a lot of saves and aren’t very reliable at getting clean sheets (apart from Boaz Myhill). If you’re torn on which defender to pick from a certain team, why not let baseline BPS/min be the decider?

thanks for this. Really handy adding in goalkeepers too.
Timely article too as many of our depleted defences could do with a polish.
