Scout Scribbles – Aguero Plays Down Injury Fears

Sergio Aguero dismisses worries over his foot problem. Reports build of a period on the sidelines for Alexis Sanchez, Philippe Coutinho returns to full training, whilst Everton have growing concerns in the centre of the park.

Aguero Allays Injury Concerns

After earlier reports had suggested that Sergio Aguero’s foot injury was worst than first feared, Manchester City’s leading marksman took to social media to kindly clear up the situation himself. Aguero revealed via Twitter that he’s merely contending with a bruised heel after being subbed off against Southampton on Saturday:

“For everyone asking, I’m fine. It’s just a harmless bump on the heel. Thanks, all of you, for the support!”

The Scout Says: Aguero’s reassuring words will be music to the ears of 150,000 managers that recruited him ahead of last weekend’s deadline. The ex-Atletico Madrid striker netted on his return from the treatment room against Liverpool but failed to impose himself at home to Southampton, managing two attempts (one on target) and four penalty-box touches. Next on the agenda for Manuel Pellegrini’s charges is a road tie against a Stoke City outfit that carded five clean sheets in their previous seven outings. Moreover, no team has conceded fewer big chances on home turf (four) than the Potters this campaign, ensuring that Aguero will need quality service to outfox the in-form Jack Butland. On that note, David Silva’s expected return to the starting line-up would serve as a major boost on the creative front, given that he boasts six assists across five league starts.

Sanchez Injury Fears Growing

Unconfirmed reports from The Mirror suggest that Alexis Sanchez has suffered a hamstring pull which looks set to sideline him for around three weeks. Santi Cazorla could also be ruled out of their Champions League match-up against Olympiacos on December 9, as the Gunners await further news on the extent of his knee injury, though Laurent Koscielny’s hip problem is believed to be a minor complaint.

The Scout Says: Whilst we await official confirmation from Arsene Wenger, the growing concerns around Sanchez’ availability have already seen over 120,000 FPL managers part company with the Gunners midfielder. Sanchez’ form – one assist in five – allied with Mesut Ozil’s displays (two goals and nine assists in eight) have persuaded many to snap up the German, who subsequently sits in over 35% of sides. Given that there are six Gameweeks between December 5 and January 2, the packed festive schedule ensures we cannot afford to carry passengers, with strong benches a necessity due to winter rotation. Sanchez still sits in over 32% of FPL teams but if he’s ruled out over the next few weeks, the exodus will pick up pace as we look to restructure our squads to cope with his absence.

Coutinho Back in Training

Liverpool confirmed that Philippe Coutinho returned to first-team training yesterday, as he steps up his recovery ahead of their League Cup clash against Southampton on Wednesday.

The Scout Says: As reported yesterday, Jurgen Klopp is confident that the sprightly Brazilian will be passed fit for the midweek encounter, lining him up for a start at Newcastle United on Sunday. Coutinho has emerged as the prime route into a revitalised Reds attack, notching four goals and one assist across his last trio of starts. Furthermore, he ranked top among midfielders for attempts (12) and shots on target (six) between Gameweeks 11-13, highlighting his license to almost operate as a second striker within the Merseysiders’ fluid system. Roberto Firmino presents the strongest challenge to Coutinho’s throne, having welcomed 65,000 new owners in the wake of his 15-point haul at the Etihad. He places third among his counterparts for shots inside the box (eight) across the last four Gameweeks, which bodes well for further attacking returns.

Central Midfield Concerns for Everton

Roberto Martinez has confirmed that double-pivot pair James McCarthy and Gareth Barry are both touch-and-go for Everton’s League Cup quarter-final against Middlesbrough tonight:

“James overextended his upper hip muscle, a little bit higher than the groin. It was quite sore yesterday, but we’ll find out more today. The same can be said for Gareth Barry. He had a really nasty knock in the shin area with stud marks and was finding it difficult to walk yesterday. Those two players will have to be assessed before we announce the squad.”

The Scout Says: With the likes of Tom Cleverley, Darron Gibson and Muhamed Besic waiting in the wings, the Toffees are not short of midfield options, negating the possibility of Ross Barkley dropping back into the double pivot. Nonetheless, both men have been mainstays throughout the course of this term, so their potential absences could impair Everton’s effectiveness as a unit this weekend. On the topic of their key midfield recruits, Barkley (three goals and two assists in two) and Gerard Deulofeu (one goal and five assists in five) have invited investment by virtue of their recent form, with Barkley currently serving as the more profitable pick-up. The underlying statistics also favour the former, given that he’s chalked up eight more attempts (nine compared to one) and four more key passes (11 to seven) since Gameweek 11.

Fellaini Stars for United Reserves

Marouane Fellaini bagged a goal and two assists for Manchester United’s U21s as they recorded a 3-2 win over Liverpool.

The Scout Says: The spread of Manchester United’s attacking returns, allied with the fact that they’ve carded the second fewest shots inside the box (77) this season has limited the appeal of their midfield and forward contingent. Fellaini has been a peripheral figure under Louis van Gaal and earned just one start all season, suggesting that last night’s display is unlikely to earn him a first-team recall in spite of his side’s struggles in the final third. The Red Devils’ rearguard – which has conceded two goals and claimed four clean sheets in the last six Gameweeks – harbours the most Fantasy potential, with Chris Smalling (6.8) representing the pick of the bunch due to his security of starts ahead of a potentially prosperous run of fixtures (WHU, bou, NOR, sto, CHE, SWA, new).

I don't like it but its your call......Kompany is leaking value and Zouma may rise in price. Also , your bench is non-existant in case one of your defenders get injured....its worth the hit

You do have great fixtures - I'm just debating whether a hit this week or just use a FT is the way to go.

I'd be hoping for Swansea to score & Zouma to get attacking returns of BPS to make a profit on the points

You took a minus 8 and made 11 points from those players, take off the +2 from using Huth on your bench and you made +1 overall.

Kompany to Spurs or Chelsea defender next GW. Chance it with Simpson this week
      Or
Hangeland to someone who plays, also next weekend. Who depends of what you need the ITB for. AKA who you're getting for Iggy after the next 2 weeks

Yeah not sure on the 3rd striker yet, will see who's in form then. Looks like it will have to be Vardy because of my money ITB/his unstoppable form.

I've done this before and I don't think it's ever been particularly useful but I'll be damned if I let that stop me.

I've just run some top level numbers to gain a view on how much the current Premier League teams rotated their squads over the busy Christmas schedule in 2014/15. The period covered is GW14 to GW20 which included 7 matches in 30 days between 2 Dec and 1 Jan.

Below is a summary table designed to give a snapshot of that data. Although I've drawn a few points out I haven't attempted to properly summarise all the data because there's simply too much to potentially mention so what I propose is that if anyone has any specific queries on particular clubs/players I'll answer as best I can.

Obviously there have been a number of managerial changes, widening of player pools, etc. and injuries/suspensions will clearly affect selection so I'm not suggesting this is a definitive guide to likely rotation, just that historical data can sometimes be useful. I haven't done the legwork for the promoted clubs, if someone wants to do that feel free 🙂

    Team ----- Matches ----- 100% Start ----- 100% Play ----- Players Used
    ARS ------- -----7------ ----- -------3-------- ----- ------3-------- ----- ---------23-------
    AVL -------- -----7------ ----- -------3-------- ----- ------6-------- ----- ---------19-------
    CHE ------- -----7------ ----- -------4-------- ----- ------5-------- ----- ---------20-------
    CPL ----- -------7------ ----- -------5-------- ----- ------7-------- ----- ---------19-------
    EVE ----- -------7------ ----- -------2-------- ----- ------4-------- ----- ---------23-------
    LEI -------- -----7------ ----- -------3-------- ----- ------4-------- ----- ---------22-------
    LIV -------- -----7------ ----- -------3-------- ----- ------3-------- ----- ---------22-------
    MCI ------- -----7------ ----- -------1-------- ----- ------6-------- ----- ---------23-------
    MUN ------ -----7------ ----- -------5-------- ----- ------5-------- ----- ---------23-------
    NEW ------ -----7------ ----- -------3-------- ----- ------3-------- ----- ---------21-------
    SOT ------- -----7------ ----- -------3-------- ----- ------4-------- ----- ---------22-------
    STO ------- -----7------ ----- -------5-------- ----- ------7-------- ----- ---------16-------
    SUN ------- -----7------ ----- -------4-------- ----- ------4-------- ----- ---------19-------
    SWA ------ -----7------ ----- -------1-------- ----- ------3-------- ----- ---------18-------
    TOT -------- -----7------ ----- -------5-------- ----- ------7-------- ----- ---------21-------
    WBA ----- ------7------ ----- -------4-------- ----- ------7-------- ----- ---------20-------
    WHM ------ -----7------ ----- -------6-------- ----- ------7-------- ----- ---------20-------

Matches = Games played in the period
100% Start = Number of players that started every game in the period
100% Play = Number of players that appeared in every game in the period
Players Used = Total number of players that appeared in the period

    Some initial observations:

Swansea and Man City both only had one player that started every game: Ashley Williams and Samir Nasri(!)

West Ham, Crystal Palace, Stoke, Tottenham and West Brom offered the greatest security of appearances with 7 players featuring in all games for those clubs (but no team is rotation free).

Not even goalkeepers are safe! 32 players played every minute of the Xmas period: 9 goalkeepers, 19 defenders, 3 midfielders and 1 striker

I think the specifics are probably of limited value but the wider point that you should ready your bench for action over the next month is probably worth paying attention to.

Bigger risk if you have a Bournemouth 5th mid, as GW19 28th dec is very prime for some top8 rotation

Should be a factor you would assume, it obviously matters what players they have to work with too though.

When I looked at the 2012/13 data Martinez was at Wigan and they had 8 players who appeared in every game - that doesn't seem to be the case at Everton now.

It depends on the quality of players too I think and Sunderland is certainly a step down from West Ham , so even less rotation imo

Fingers crossed no more injuries to my first XI so I can make some changes to the bench!

On topic - were most of the defenders that played every game central defenders? My theory (backed by nothing) is that fullbacks far greater distances and therefore are much more prone to rotation.

            A fair mix I think...

The 19 defenders who played every minute:
            Baines
            Coleman (Seamus)
            Cresswell
            Ivanovic
            Janmaat
            Dann
            Fazio
            Lescott
            Mertesacker
            O'Shea
            Pieters
            Reid (Winston)
            Shawcross
            Terry
            Vertonghen
            Ward (Joel)
            Wasilewski
            Williams (Ashley)
            Wisdom

The defenders who appeared in every game but were subbed on or off at least once:
            Cahill
            Cameron
            Clark
            Demichelis
            Dummett
            Okore

                  +42. Really useful.

It looks as if the defenders (and goalkeepers, which you don't list) are the most likely to play every minute.

There should also be plenty of midfielders and forwards who will play every match, but only a few of them will play every minute.

Many of the best players will play every match, but some may start the odd match on the bench. It is likely to be the lesser players, or those get injured, who are least likely to play every match.

Those who play every match but not every minute will not be auto-subbed in our FPL teams. But if they only play a small number of minutes in some matches then they may not make the best captains.

Although few of the midfielders and forwards played every minute, it might be interesting to see how many, and which ones, played at least 60 minutes every match.

And if it isn't too much trouble, it would also be interesting to know how many times each of these midfielders and forwards played more than 60 minutes, since some of them might perhaps only have been coming on for short cameos.

                  TIA.

      Team with many rotation.

Players used : 23 - Arsenal, Everton, Manchester City and Manchester United.

      Team with less rotation.

      Players used : 16 - Stoke.

Everton's equivalent stats from 2013/14 period:

            Team ----- Matches ----- 100% Start ----- 100% Play ----- Players Used
            EVE ----- -------6------ ----- -------2-------- ----- ------6-------- ----- ---------17-------

That nearly equivalent to Stoke's last year rotation (16 players used).

Perhaps it's injury / old players that take it's toll last season.

Good post and very unselfish of you after all the legwork. Like myself you are a player who wishes ALL to do well. We all go through the same emotions each week of each season, cursing our luck and saying " if only".

This is why we play it and no other reason." If you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat both those imposters just the same" . Then you are a man my son.

There are legitimate reasons behind all of those, mainly a surprising amount of keeper injuries.

I'd say keepers primed for a benching to be those with legitimately challenging backups.
            Rotated keepers this year prediction:
Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea (Courtois coming back fit), West Brom (Foster back eventually?)
Then throw in random injuries or red cards.

Just checked back the 2 previous seasons as I had the data to hand (although I haven't researched the circumstances of injury/suspension/rotation).

2013/14 - 8/17 teams used more than 1 goalkeeper in the 6 game period I had the data for:

              Everton (Howard/Robles)
              Hull (Harper/McGregor)
              Man City (Hart/Pantilimon)
              Southampton (Davis/Gazzaniga)
              Stoke (Begovic/Sorensen)
              Swansea (Vorm/Tremmel)
              West Brom (Foster/Myhill)
              West Ham (Adrian/Jaaskelainen)

2012/13 - 7/17 teams used more than 1 goalkeeper in the 9 game period I had the data for:

              Chelsea (Cech/Turnbull)
              Fulham (Schwarzer/Stockdale)
              Man United (De Gea/Lindegaard)
              Norwich (Bunn/Ruddy)
              Southampton (Davis/Gazzaniga/Boruc)
              Swansea (Vorm/Tremmel)
              West Brom (Foster/Myhill)

So I have narrowed by benching decision to Rojo or Moreno.....does Moreno's assist potential negate the fact that United have an easier fixture at home while Liverpool are away to New

Ah, that is a real toughie. I think Moreno for his attacking, against a right back who will probably be too busy trying to score to notice Moreno and Coutinho swamping his side.

Convinced the FPL gods are against me. Haven't even been inside the top million this season and yet I haven't finished outside the top million ever. I've finally put my finger on why I've been doing so poorly:

While my midfield of Payet, Mahrez and KDB has served me well, my team is only average because my attack has failed me. The big issue is ALL of the big-hitters (Aguero bar his 5 v Newcastle, Costa, Rooney, Hazard, Walcott and Sanchez has been on and off) haven't cut it while the cheap to mid-priced forwards I wouldn't normally go for like Vardy, Lukaku and Ighalo have hit big scores consistently.

The only cheapies I go for out of principle are defenders but premium defenders have scored much higher than budget picks. The best defender with a start price of 4.5 is Watford's Nyom, who is only the 20th best defender in the game. There are only three 4.5-start price defs in the top 30 defs (Nyom, Cathcart and Wollscheid, who isn't even nailed). Thinking back to seasons where bottom more half teams had good defences (like Wolves, Blackburn and Bolton), this was never usually the case. Maybe it's down to the strength of the league or FPL clamping down on pesky players like me that most starting defenders are 5.0 or over and there are no good 4.0 picks. I would never go for 5.0 defs as I think you might as well upgrade to a premium, but I've had to have a costly defence of 3 5.0s, a premium and a 4.5 (Richards) to cope with this shift in value.

I've been stung by having a top-heavy team and cheap defence in my gw3 wildcard and I have needed to use point hits to recover which, again, I is against my religion! I can't be the only one who has had to change the way they play the game this season.

I think the value is in the players in between the mid-high price range (Ozil, Kane, Lukaku, Mane, Vardy, Coutinho). If you have these rather than the big-hitters you can afford a balanced team with a high-scoring defence, midfield and attack.
