We take our regular trip to the Weekly Shop this evening, assessing the player lists of our partner games to pinpoint the likely targets that will make up our weekend lineups.

The player analysis is split into two sections: I’ll break down the key targets that no squad can do without in “Better Buys”, before seeking out those one-shot “Poundstretcher” prospects that can provide us points, whilst freeing up funds.

For this week’s selection, we’re scanning the players lists in our two partner games – FantasyBet and Premier Punt.

Better Buys

In six league matches at Old Trafford this season, United have conceded just once and Louis Van Gaal’s defence looks set to continue that resilient run with the visit of a blunted West Ham. David De Gea (FantasyBet 5.5m, PremierPunt 8.2m) is certain to start and requires less outlay than the Red Devils’ only other guaranteed backline regular Chris Smalling (FantasyBet 6m, PremierPunt 9.5m).

Against Swansea, Liverpool picked up a second clean sheet in six league outings under Jurgen Klopp last weekend. After selecting Alberto Moreno (FantasyBet 5m, PremierPunt 7m) in the Poundstretchers category, we hand the Spaniard a promotion this time around on the back of his maximum bonus haul against Garry Monk’s men. With a trip to struggling Newcastle up next, Moreno’s raids down the flank could finally come to fruition as he looks to add to a single assist so far.

Sadio Mane (FantasyBet 8m, PremierPunt 11.6m) looked lively in the defeat at the Etihad and created the Saints’ consolation in a 3-1 loss. The Senegalese midfielder has three goals and six assists this season and, having netted against Liverpool this evening, may well add to that tally with Aston Villa visiting St Mary’s. Dusan Tadic (FantasyBet 7m, PremierPunt 10.4m) is a viable alternative – the Serb comes in cheaper than his team-mate and is currently leading on overall points.

Romelu Lukaku (FantasyBet 8m, PremierPunt 12.1m) has been labelled as inconsistent in the past but five goals in four shows the Belgian is almost indispensable at the moment. The Capital One Cup clash with Middlesbrough, who conceded for the first time in seven matches at the Riverside, demonstrated that Lukaku’s flourishing understanding with Gerard Deulofeu (FantasyBet 6.5m, PremierPunt Forward 9.5m) has even made doubling-up on the Toffees’ attacking assets against Crystal Palace an enticing option.

Poundstretchers

Aston Villa have scored just once in their last three away trips, so investment in Southampton’s defence looks to offer value this weekend – in spite of this evening’s 6-1 home hammering at the hands of Liverpool. The cheapest route into the Saints backline is keeper Maarten Stekelenburg (FantasyBet 5m, PremierPunt 7.8m), who has made 12 saves over the last four Gameweeks.

Watford have been defensively impressive in front of their own fans this season, keeping four clean sheets in seven home encounters. Given that only Arsenal, Manchester United and Palace have scored at Vicarage Road, visitors Norwich could struggle to make a breakthrough and we call upon Nathan Ake (FantasyBet 4.5m, PremierPunt 6.4m) as our preferred pick – the left-back gets forward more than the other Hornets defenders and picked up an assist in the recent home clash with West Ham.

Arsenal’s injury crisis could see Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (FantasyBet 6m, PremierPunt 8.4m) handed a start at home to Sunderland this weekend. With Mesut Ozil in such fine form, the former Southampton wide man could get amongst the points if the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Santi Cazorla are indeed ruled out. Another budget friendly midfielder from a top-team is Dele Alli (FantasyBet 5m, PremierPunt 7.3m). Back in contention for Tottenham’s trip to West Brom after serving a one-match suspension last weekend, he offers a cut-price route into an attack that had scored thirteen times in the last four Gameweeks.

It’s difficult to look past Watford for cut-price forward options. We highlighted Odion Ighalo’s (FantasyBet 5m, PremierPunt 8m) record last week and the Nigerian duly delivered with a goal and an assist. Strike partner Troy Deeney (FantasyBet 5.5m, PremierPunt 8m) has quietly been on a scoring run himself and, having netted in four in the last five, he offers an in-form option for the visit of Norwich.

These are the contenders for my weekly contest lineups heading into the weekend. I’ll return on Friday with a further assessment of this week’s partner games – FantasyBet and Premier Punt, as I continue my quest for profit in the 2015/16 campaign.

Question of the day: How do we pick ourselves up after a terrible gameweek?

Not had the best of GWs, in fact it was the worst one that I can recall from, though this is only my 2nd season on FPL. It was so bad that I avoided this site and the FPL site for the last few days, and I was sick of hearing about any football related news.

So this is how it unfolded... My season was going very well and I was well within the top 4K by GW11. Then things started to go downhill, I got a couple of red arrows in the following 2 GWs. In GW12, 6 of my front 7 blanked and payet also got injured. In GW13, I only had a goal and 2 assists to share between my front 7. Needless to say, I was very frustrated with my attackers, so I panicked and decided to wildcard for GW14.

On my WC, i took out KDB, bolasie and vardy for firmino, cazorla and aguero... yes that is a whooping 34 points swing (all 3 players i took out had max bonus pts). To make matters worse, kane (c) gave me a total of 2 points, koscielny, cazorla and aguero all got injured, and once again 5 of my front 7 blanked. unbelievable jeff!!!

I am now ranked at 50K. It is not the end of the world I know, but it is very hard for me pick myself up after such a horrendous gw. Perhaps it is due to my inexperience in FPL that I am struggling to deal with these things and move forward from here 🙁

You are doing better than most of us. All you need to know is that you win some you lose some and take it on the chin really.

What helps me is thinking about the plan forward. One good GW is all you need.

Just don't be afraid to bring back players you've recently transferred out. Stubbornness will kill your rank.

Other than that just keep calm , the points will come.

You're doing great. Hard luck with the injuries. Remember you're ahead of the hall of famers and csn still win overall. Lesson learned should be imo, that after a good start one should go template. Its funny how happiness in the game is so relative, I'm 416k and enjoying my slow and arduos progress.

Don't dwell on the week-by-week stuff - focus on the bigger picture. 50k is a very respectable rank at this stage of the season (especially so seeing as its only your second season!).

You can plot and plan for hours and hours each week with this game - but at the end of the day (and despite what anyone says) there is still an element of luck involved. You've just had a pretty hefty dose of bad luck - but there's still Xmas fixtures, DGWs and WCs to look forward to and plenty can (and will) change before the end of the season. Keep your chin up!

No idea Christina, the 442 was a surprise 😯 My guess is he starts for Sturridge on Sunday as I can't see why Klopp would risk Sturridge with two fit & in-form strikers with Tekkers plus Origi. T

    Which of these pairs...?

    Fourth and fifth midfielder;

    A. Barkley and Stanislas
    B. Alli and Lanzini
    C. Mane and Stanislas

Currently thinking of B, strong bench might be needed for the Xmas period...
Or A, which would mean doubling up Everton attack - fixtures do look good for December.

hey, if I get it wrong then I will take it on the chin. I owned him early on this year so I know the heartache.

It can't be worse than talking him up, not buying him and he scores big.

Forced an amazing save from Lloris.
      Looked very dangerous.
Could of had an assist or two if Pedro could finish.

Highest rated Chelsea player in every website I checked that had "player ratings"

If he got 6+ points everyone will be all over him, was very unlucky on the weekend.

    @ Acqua

That's understandable. I am fighting with myself over 0.1 value. I think Sanchez will go down tonight. Either I can get Cout now and pocket the 0.1 or let the 0.1 drop and listen to the presser. I do think he will be fit, I juts want to know if Klopp's reasons for benching Coutinho are the same as I mentioned.

A player coming back from an injury is never a cap material for me too.

@Acqua : This one is what I intended to paste here from the previous page

The fixtures are really good. But the attack seems very disjointed Acqua. I might join you, but his ownership isn't very high in the game as opposed to Barkley (33%) and Coutinho (22%).

There's also the whole story revolving around Costa, I don't think I fancy Hazard upfront, he likes to run at the defences and playing upfront takes that away from him. I do believe we'll see either Costa or Remy this week. In which case, Hazard could run riot.

It really depends on you. The fixtures are there, the temptation is there, he seems to be sharp again.

I'm willing to take the risk, especially knowing he is 100% nailed on over Christmas, no no need to panic and transfer him out until after those 4 (and by then hopefully he's produced some points + value).

Like I said above, I have the option of getting Coutinho in for Mane if he plays and looks sharpish like before his injury. Let's see this weekend, might not even start.

His 90 minutes is exactly why I am tempted myself. There would be no rotation and now that Chelsea have managed 3 clean sheets in the last 3 in all competitions, I think it's safe to say that the focus would move on to attack, especially for the upcoming games.

        I might join you.

I've done it. Already had Ozil, KDB and coutinho. I'm treating it as a punt as I didn't want Barkley. If/when cash is needed he's the money box.
Aware of the form and risks but fancy a little flutter as Barkley would be so template for me and no one else was worth it.

Decided if I was going to have a gamble with no financial concerns I might as well go for last seasons top performer with great fixtures.

      Form over fixture.

I have to laugh at some comments on here about various players. Eg So many people keep talking down KDB and how his stats are not great yet he keeps producing the points and in FPL that's all that matters.

Stats may suggest Haz is on the up but until he starts scoring I'm staying clear.

It could be a decent punt for him to finally get a few baps alright

Whoever had Alexis and are transferring him prob don't want Bark since they have Lukaku. Cout is marked as a doubt and Hazzy is left for a bit of a punt really

If haz doesn't perform, he can be easily swapped for the weekends winner, which could very well be Cout or Barkley! or whoever else brings home the baps

There's a fair few pros for the baps but I'm not digging Chelsea as a whole team and Hazzy's not so hot

Haz, Cout and Barkley might end up getting 2 baps each but who the f knows!

If you ever wanted to take a chance it's a good time to do so, But form over fixture for me this week

BR also had a way easier schedule (stk, BOU, ars, WHU, mun, bord, NOR, CARL, AVL, SION, eve) with 4 wins, 5 draws, 2 losses. 11 goals scored & 13 goals conceded in 11 matches.

Klopp (tot, RUBKAZ, SOU, BOU, che, rubkaz, CRY, WOLVER, mci, BORD, SWA, sou). 8 wins, 3 draws, 1 loss. 23 goals scored, & 10 goals conceded in 12 matches. They're averaging more shots per game, way more interceptions, tackles attempted/successful tackles, forcing more defensive errors from opposition, etc. Running a comparison tool between 1-8 & Klopp's 9-14 (looking at averages), Klopp dominates leads in both defensive & offensive metrics.

What Billy said, & also most of those are just 'commentator stats', other than SoT the more useful stats come from the members tables. Underlying stats to gauge form & perhaps lead to future results are what counts. Klopp's side are also averaging better expected goals for & conceded, which takes into account the quality of the shots taken (among other things).
