As always on a Thursday evening, we take a look at the Sky Sports game and assess the recent run of Man of the Match (MoTM) awards, bonus point beneficiaries, the transfer trends and also cast an eye over the Scout team and our future plans.

Gameweek 17 Man of the Match Awards

Listed below are the players that caught the eye of the Sky Sports reporters from last weekend’s fixtures achieving the Man of the Match award (worth an additional five points).

FixtureMoTM
Aston Villa vs WatfordTroy Deeney
Bournemouth vs EvertonJunior Stanislas
Crystal Palace vs NewcastleYannick Bolasie
Man City vs SouthamptonKevin de Bruyne
Sunderland vs StokeDuncan Watmore
Leicester vs Man UnitedJamie Vardy
Tottenham vs ChelseaAsmir Begovic
West Ham vs West BromDarren Fletcher
Liverpool vs SwanseaJames Milner
Norwich vs ArsenalRobbie Brady

One goalkeeper, two forwards and seven midfielders picked up the awards this week. Jamie Vardy now has six for the season, whilst Junior Stanislas (4.7) and Duncan Watmore (3.8) look great picks right now, given their advanced roles and cheap price – the latter could earn a start this weekend after Jermain Defoe was ruled out of the trip to Arsenal. Former MoTM machine Yannick Bolasie picked up his first award of the season after a shift of position into the number ten role and is one to watch out for.

Gameweek 17 Bonus Points

Four goalkeepers picked up bonus this week – Tim Howard was one of that quartet and now sits on eight bonus points for the season, just two behind leader Jack Butland (10).

In defence, 13 players grabbed bonus, eight for tackles and five for passes completed. Simon Francis picked up passing bonus and only narrowly missed out on tackles by just one challenge – the Cherries full-back has now extended his lead at the top of the pile and sits on 16 overall.

In midfield, there were 19 beneficiaries in total: 11 for tackling and ten for passes. Emre Can and Andrew Surman were the two to achieve both and bring home six points apiece. Cesc Fabregas is the game’s highest bonus earner overall with 24 points so far.

Mauro Zarate flew the flag for forwards after making five successful challenges to earn tackling bonus to go alongside his free-kick goal.

The Transfer Trends

Injuries play a part in four of the top five here, with Alexis Sanchez, Dimitri Payet and City duo Joe Hart and Vincent Kompany all earning plenty of transfers out over the last few days. Graziano Pelle has now served his one-match suspension, though, and is available for Southampton’s plum home clash with Villa.

Forwards occupy all but one of the top five spots here as Fantasy managers freshen up their frontlines. Harry Kane, Romelu Lukaku and Jamie Vardy are all in fine form, whilst those who transferred in Sergio Aguero will be hoping he recovers from the heel injury that forced him off against Southampton. Ross Barkley’s recent rise to Fantasy prominence has looked too good to ignore, given his kind 6.7 price tag.

Watchlist

Here I aim to highlight a few differential players with low ownership that I think could be good options for the next six fixtures. These will be looking at three specific price brackets to cater for our available budget. These names evolve with fixtures and form and offer fantasy managers a nudge in hopefully the right direction.

Notes

Another sub-par week for my team and a dip in ranking. A few weeks ago I was in the top 1,000 but with a Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy-less team, I have struggled to keep pace with the pack.

I’ll continue to be stubborn in that regard and try to find a different way to climb the ladder – I was hoping my differential captain of Yohan Cabaye would help me out but he managed a sickening two point return despite Crystal Palace bagging five goals! A few fires have arisen in the shape of Sergio Aguero, Heurelho Gomes and Alexis Sanchez, who are all currently flagged with injury. I’m hopeful the former two will be fit for the weekend, though I’m set to part company with Sanchez after he was ruled out by Arsene Wenger earlier today. You would think that gives me the perfect opportunity to jump on Kane or Vardy but, having looked at fixtures, I think I’ll dust off the old faithful Eden Hazard blanket as Chelsea’s schedule start to pick up.

Captain Plan
With Sanchez now out of the equation for Arsenal’s home clash with Sunderland, I’m considering drafting in Hazard and handing him the armband against Bournemouth at the Bridge.

I’ll ignore Sunday’s match as I have no Liverpool or Newcastle players and instead give Romelu Lukaku the armband for Monday night football at home to Crystal Palace. This sets me up nicely as the Belgian plays match day one in Gameweek 19 away to Norwich.

I wouldn't go captaining a defender. Can backfire after one goal conceded as someone said below. You've got great captain options in your team without having to do it.

Don't do it..just one early goal and you fed up all game waiting on a defender to get attack points. Lot better options. Risk - reward factor not worth it

Here's my post from last week on Bournemouth, turning the focus to this week. After the talk of them tightening up, they went on to concede three. Very happy with my Everton points personally.

    _______________________

The Bournemouth Myth - Cause vs Correlation

It's a nice idea, especially with Lukaku traditionally being a 'troll', but this Bournemouth scaremongering is a bit daft imo.

Yes, they're top or second or whatever for some defensive stats for the last THREE gameweeks. They've also changed formation in that time. For the record, from...

    Surman Gosling
    Ritchie CAM LW
    Striker

    ....to ....

    Surman
    Arter Gosling
    Ritchie ST LW

BUT... Is that the reason why their defensive stats are good? In my opinion, no.

    It's the fixtures:
    sot / NEW / swa

To make the comparison sweeter, before that they played mci / TOT.

If you like stats.. Last four GWs, shots on target:
    Everton - 2nd
    Newcastle - 11th
    Swansea - 15th
    Southampton - 18th
    __________________________

    ***** GW15 UPDATE *****

For the record, there has been no moment of enlightenment from Eddie Howe. The only reason for the change was Harry Arter returning, so he wanted Surman, Gosling and him in the same team. Pure fluke.

So, they conceded three last week - will they tighten up? No way.

*** EH: "I think (the result) just reinforces the belief that we can compete and we can beat teams. Obviously it's a point for us but it's a point that further enhances our mentality into believing in the way that we're playing..." ***

    Oh, Eddie. 🙄

For the record, this week Bournemouth are likely to be without:
    - First & second choice GKs
    - First & second choice CBs
    - First choice RB out of position
    - Potentially Arter again
    - First choice striker still

    Rant II over.

I'm a football gambler.. and Bournemouth were brilliant for me last season 🙂 .. Loved watching em play and still do. While their attack is really good and fun to watch their defense is just plain horrid though. I am a Chelsea fan btw.. who happens to love the championship too 🙂

cheers. I may listen again to his. Did last week and indeed enjoyed my Lukaku (c) points. Plus my JKing points.

Worth pointing out that their cheap mids are also worth bringing in - can see a few more points for King, Gosling et al over xmas.

If coutinho is not fit this post may just be the final impetus I need to punt on Hazard.

Revisiting my benching headache with some stats:

    A) Moreno - very attacking, just scored (sort of) for a team full of confidence and up against a woeful team who have conceded the most SiB and have only scored 2 goals in the last 5.

    B) Kolarov - probably the most attacking defender in the game. On some set pieces. Just scored. Stoke have the least SiB of all teams at home this season

    C) Bolasie - on the back of a 15 point haul. Away to a leaky Everton side missing 2 key defenders.

    D) Mahrez - 2nd top point scorer in the game, but no longer on pens and small potential of a resting (given they are up against pacey wingers. Remember that one time at....)

Would be a huge gamble, but I'm swaying towards benching Mahrez..... whatcha reckon?

I got rod of Mahrez and still have Vardy. Vardy more consistent, with hard fixtures I only need 1 Leister cover anyway and Mahrez has high ownership so its good for me if he blanks. He is yet to get a goal or assist since I've shipped him.

Only considering it for this week - SWA are usually (albeit not recently) fairly solid defensively at home. It's a tough call. Normally I'd definitely bench a defender, but the 4 I have are either super attacking, have a great fixture, or both!

For all those considering Sanchez > Coutinho .. I think pull the trigger.

    1. If Cout doesn't play this weekend, he'll play next.
    2. You'll want him for his upcoming fixtures.
    3. You have a fifth mid/ fourth defender for a reason (this reason).
    4. If you got Sanchez at 11.0 you'll save .1.
    5. There is a chance (slight, I admit) that Coutinho will go up this week.
    6. Other reasons I can't think of.

Now I have Sanchez and Rojo as my unfit players, 1 free transfer, and Williams rotting away on my bench.

Take a hit to get Rose and Coutinho in?

Defo take the hit, not sure on those 2 in though

I hate having Williams in, I had the chance to do the transfer to get rid last week too, but then I didn't. Think I might just do it to set up the team well for the future

He is pretty expensive though. I was looking to actually keep Rojo and get rid of Williams first. If I do get rid of Rojo, he'd be the one to get in.

I really didn't need Rojo's injury, i wanted to get rid of Cedric and keep a United DF. Now i have to get rid of Rojo and i'm not sure there's another United DF i want to bring in considering that Blind is out of the question. Luckily i wasn't going to play Rojo this weekend.

Guys, what would you advice with 1 FT & 2.8m itb?

      Butland
      Moreno / Kolarov / Bellerin
      Sanchez* / Mahrez / KDB / Ozil
      Vardy / Lukaku / Kane
      (Mccarthy / Rojo* / Surman / Targett)

      A) Sanchez -> Coutinho or Hazard or Silva (who?)
      B) Rojo & Sanchez -> Toby/Dier & any one of the above (-4)

Wenger said something about Ramsey playing on the right too.. that being said he'll probably have to play in the pivot with Caz out. who plays on the left is the question

The only viable defensive option from united is DDG, unless you can afford Mike, which I doubt, so DDG or none
I mean, the guy once had this back 4

        Valencia smalling blind young

        Avoid any united defender

Did Sanchez to hazard last night. Feels good. I know he's had a shocker all season but there is something very comforting having an fpl heavy hitting galactico back in the team with C playing at home to BOU.
