FA Cup Scout Notes – Fifth Round – Sunday

Dimitri Payet and Emmanuel Emenike both score twice as West Ham ease past Blackburn. Eden Hazard provides a goal and two assists as Chelsea crush an under-strength Man City, whilst Martin Kelly fires Palace into the last eight at Tottenham’s expense.

Payet at the double

Dimitri Payet scored two spectacular goals and grabbed an assist as West Ham United dished out a 5-1 thrashing to Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park. Allied with his 13-point haul last Gameweek, the 8.2-priced midfielder is in fine form ahead of a favourable home clash against Sunderland. That being said, Watford’s triumph over Leeds on Saturday already ensured that the Hornets’ visit to the Boleyn Ground in Gameweek 30 will be postponed, diminishing Payet’s appeal on the Fantasy market – nonetheless, more than 69,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have snapped up the Frenchman ahead of the Black Cats showdown.

Emmanuel Emenike also bagged a brace in his maiden start for the Hammers – given that Enner Valencia (ankle) and Andy Carroll (hip) are nursing knocks, the Nigerian marksman, who is priced at 5.0 in FPL, is likely to lead the line against the Black Cats.

In the wake of an impactful cameo against Norwich City last time out, Victor Moses opened the scoring with a drilled strike. If the fit-again Manuel Lanzini – who was deployed in the 67th minute and went on to card an assist – is handed a starting role next time out, Moses and Michail Antonio look set to compete for a wide berth in Slaven Bilic’s preferred 4-2-3-1 set-up. Antonio filled in at right-back against Blackburn as Joey O’Brien and James Tomkins are injured and Sam Byram is cup-tied, having previously played for Leeds in an earlier round.

Cheikhou Kouyate received his marching orders for denying a goal scoring opportunity, ruling him out of the Sunderland encounter. However, Bilic confirmed post-match that he intends to appeal the decision and believes the Irons can present a strong case.

Spurs slip to defeat

Tottenham Hotspur succumbed to a 1-0 home loss at the hands of Crystal Palace. Mauricio Pochettino shuffled the starting XI following their draw at Fiorentina earlier in the week, dropping Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen to the bench.

On the injury front, Hugo Lloris remained sidelined with the shoulder complaint he sustained against Manchester City, while Mousa Dembele was withdrawn at the break with a minor groin problem. Spurs’ last two defeats arrived when the ex-Fulham recruit was hamstrung by injury, so investors in their offense will be hopeful of a swift recovery.

As a consequence of Spurs’ exit from the FA Cup, their road tie against Aston Villa in Gameweek 30 will go ahead as planned. Given that Harry Kane (41% ownership), Alderweireld (42%) and Dele Alli (31%) are among the most popular Fantasy recruits, many managers will find it far easier to cobble together a full team in three weeks’ time.

Kelly wins it for Palace

Martin Kelly steered the Eagles into the quarter finals with a thunderous effort. Wilfried Zaha – who notched two assists in his previous four league starts and netted the winner against Stoke in the Fourth Round – underlined his good form with the assist. Valued at 5.3, the fleet-footed winger could well factor into our thinking for future double Gameweeks.

Yannick Bolasie made a second-half cameo, priming him for a return to league action at West Bromwich Albion next weekend. Nonetheless, his differential potential is curtailed by the fact that Palace’s trip to Manchester United in Gameweek 30 is set to be rescheduled in response to their win over Spurs. On that note, the ownerships of Scott Dann (23%), Chris Smalling (25%) and David De Gea (11%) face the prospect of benching considerable funds during the blank.

Hazard steers Blues to victory

Chelsea put Manchester City to the sword in a 5-1 win at Stamford Bridge. Eden Hazard showed shoots of recovery with a goal and pair of assists, while Diego Costa complemented his assist against Paris Saint-Germain with a goal on Sunday afternoon. Willian, Gary Cahill and Bertrand Traore also graced the scoresheet, with Oscar claiming an assist.

Speaking of Oscar, the Brazil international came up short from the penalty spot for the second time this term, perhaps giving Guus Hiddink food for thought with regards to the Chelsea spot-kick pecking order.

Chelsea’s passage through to the last eight of the FA Cup results in the postponement of their road clash against Liverpool in Gameweek 30. From the Blues’ perspective, Willian is the second-most popular midfielder with regards to transfers in (57,000) this week, while Costa (46,000) is the third-most popular forward, which throws up a dilemma for those new owners. Moreover, Cesar Azpilicueta’s 14% ownership might need to do some tinkering ahead of that date.

The postponement of Chelsea’s clash with Liverpool means that the latter – like Everton – play just twice over the next four Gameweeks. Considering that one of those match-ups is a visit from Manchester City, Roberto Firmino’s 17% ownership will likely be exploring other avenues. On the flip side, both Merseyside clubs will now enjoy two double Gameweeks at some point down the line, which encourages us to keep tabs on the likes of Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho following their return from the treatment room.

Pellegrini rings the changes as City tumble out

Manuel Pellegrini made nine alterations for the Sky Blues’ trip to the capital, ensuring that his first team are well rested for the first leg of their Champions League match-up against Dinamo Kiev on Wednesday.

The likes of Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Yaya Toure and Vincent Kompany all played no part as the Chilean handed five debutants a chance to impress at the Bridge.

Ultimately, City’s defeat to Chelsea means that their trip to Norwich City in Gameweek 30 remains intact. This will be music to the ears of Aguero’s 30% ownership and may persuade many to hold now – a win for City yesterday would have handed Aguero two blanks in the next four, bearing in mind he already misses out this upcoming weekend due to City’s Capital One Cup final clash with Liverpool.

Is it worth planning to use a FT to field a keeper in GW30? Will have plenty of FTs before then and enough outfield players but have been pretty happy with Courtois + Hennessey as my 2 GKs so not sure I'd want to get rid of either of them?

Out of the 142 entrants for this weekend's competition, Just one person is currently on 8 out of 8 correct and therefore still on for the "jackpot" of winning FFS membership for next season - COSTA. 10 out of 10 will be achieved if there isn't a goal in the first 10 minutes of the Shrewsbury v Man Utd match tomorrow, AND Man Utd fail to win the match by 2 or more goals. Good luck mate! 🙂

I've decided to swap Aguero, instead of Ighalo, for Vardy this week.

If you think about it logically, an extra transfer to get Aguero back in for Villa will cost 4pts - I'm betting Ighalo will score at least 4 pts, with a strong chance of much more.

Not having Vardy this week is not even an option...

Haha.. I doubt it very much.
      Presume this is irony.

The idea that a couple of DGWs can make "better" players beat the "casuals" is complete tripe I think.

These DGWs are more likely to be a damp squib like most DGWs in previous seasons.
No idea when to use my chips.
      Not expecting much in fairness.

Just experience tells me this from previous seasons.
Aguero is as likely to score big v Villa than a DGW..for example.
This season has been disappointment after disappointment.

Last season I was in the Top 1k with a WC with about 5 GWs to go.
          Dropped down dramatically after that.
Still have nightmares about it all.

Happened at least in 2 DGW's last season. Pure disasters.
The way everyone is going on here.. its massive gains ahead for all the experts here.

I really hope so but not expecting the world thats all.
Will need a lot of luck to do well with the DGWs.

I've seen players on here who are planning to use bench boost with 11 DGWers + 4 strong SGWers, but if you can only field 11 DGW'ers, wouldn't it make more sense for all your stronger players to have two games that week, with your weaker players playing once.

    A) 8 games from strong players and 4 games from weaker players.

    v

    B) 8 Games from weaker players and 4 games from stronger players

    A wins IMO.

  24. Wildcard Planning: Two Options
    • 10 Years
    8 years, 2 months ago

Okay this is my assessment of how the WC planning should generally go.

    ----------------------------
    The Types of Teams
    ----------------------------

There are going to be three or maybe four categories of teams and then Liverpool who will have different levels of relevancy depending on whether you look to wildcard pre gameweek 34 or pre gameweek 37.

First off, there are the straight and narrow teams such as Leicester, Southampton, Stoke, and now Tottenham too who will have no double gameweek in gw 34 and no double gameweek in week 35 either.

Secondly, there will be teams who have a double gameweek in 34 but and also have a game in gameweek 35 maybe because they/their opponents lost their FA Cup quarter final or they are a team like Man City or Newcastle with just a Carling Cup fixture to be re-arranged.

Thirdly there are the FA Cup quarter final winners and their week 35 opponents who will have a double in 34, a blank in 35 and then another double gameweek in week 37. This could be two, four, six or eight teams depending on how the quarter finals go. (Bournemouth and Norwich may be lumped into this set although they likely won't have a double in 34 as they could have a blank in week 35).

Then there's a possibility that FA Cup quarter final losers and also Man City and Newcastle who could have a single gameweek 34, no blank 35 but then a double gameweek in 37.

Finally Liverpool will have the holy grail of a doubles in both 34 and 37 with no blank week in between due to their impending blanks now.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------
The Case for Wildcarding before Gameweek 34
    ---------------------------------------------------------------

There will be enough teams with a double gameweek 34 to play this in one of a lot scenarios though in each case you will want 3 Liverpool players if you can get past their disappointing DGW from last year.

My ideal way to run this would be with this WC in gameweek 33
    3 Liverpool players
    8 players with a dgw in 34 and a fixture in 35
    4 players with dgw34, blank 35, dgw 37

This allows a 15 player BB in gameweek 34.

Then having rolled the week 34 transfer you can make one housekeeping transfer in week 35 while still getting 11 players out. Then you use your rolled FT from 35 and your transfers from 36 and 37 and you get something like this:

    3 Liverpool players
5 players who had dgw 34, a fixture in 35 and a single gameweek in 37
7 players with dgw34 had no fixture in 35 and dgw37

This results in 10 dgw players for gameweek 37 having had a BB15 in week 34 and 11 players in week 35.

IF Man City vs Newcastle is in GW37 then conceivably your housekeeping transfer in week 35 can get in an 11th DGWer for gameweek 37.

    -------------------------------------------------
The Case for Wildcarding in Week 36
    -------------------------------------------------

This tactic depends a lot more on your set up for gameweek 30 and works better if Man City vs Newcastle is in gameweek 34.

Ideally you have 11 players for gameweek 30 by week 29 so you can roll a free transfer through the blank week. This should put you on

    11 gameweek 30 players (this could include 3/4 Man City/Newcastle with a dgw34)
4 gameweek 30 blanks who have a dgw in week 34

This then gives you 5 transfers to get in players with a dgw 34 but also a fixture in gameweek 35 putting you on

6 gameweek 30 players with a single gameweek 34 (unless the City fixture is in 34)
9 players with a double gameweek 34 and mostly with games in 35

This means you ideally get between 9 and 11 double gameweekers in week 34 (dependant on Man City vs Newcastle), 11 players out in gameweek 35 and then you can wildcard in 15 DGWers in week 36 ahead of DGW37 IF there are 6 or 8 PL teams with a dgw37.

    ---------------
    Conclusion
    ---------------

There are currently two very good potential ways of playing the Wildcard as it stands although depending on when Man City vs Newcastle falls and how the FA Cup quarter finals pan out there may be a clear favourite post-gameweek 30. There are also caveats that both scenarios above are "best case" and don't legislate for the actual appeal of the players, their fixtures, rotation worries or the fact red cards and injuries will probably reign you in from the idealistic frontiers.

This week I am focusing on getting 11 players out for this weekend and also on replacing Myhill for a useful second goalkeeper. Then I will spend weeks 28 and 29 getting in a couple of Man City players for their good fixtures and for the possibility they have a dgw in 34. I will then hopefully roll my week 30 transfer and re-assess the landscape after the FA Cup quarter finals.

There are ifs and buts all over the place but hopefully the above helps you see how things may fall and whether you are suited more to one camp or another. The gameweek 33 method seems easier to pull off and gives you a bit more flexibility between now and then but if you play it well now and the Man City vs Newcastle fixture falls in week 34, you could benefit from a gameweek 36 wildcard in terms of player numbers.

Finally this is all just hit-free planning, either plan could work particularly well with a couple of well judged hits along the way.

Why more rotation in GW 37? It's the last matches of the season, not the time to save important players. The matches also tend to have more goals = more attack points.

I'm very surprised you managed to get through all that without using the word Everton. Bundle them in with the Liverpool bits.

        8 years, 2 months ago

yeahhh I had some stuff written on them but fell down the rabbit hole. This is the easiest to categorise them for now but if there's a blank week 35 and either a dgw 33 or dgw36 for them everything changes.

Good work. My plan was triple captain DGW34, wildcard GW36, then bench boost DGW37 and this adds weight to that plan!

What's ironic is that many people will be able to plug their squads into this excellent resource that Balders has crafted and then still find the time to whinge about casuals.

That was a great read, especially like the format. Wish I could Upvote twice, once for my initial awe and again for my follow-up appreciation.

It depends on your situation but having a two complimentary keepers, a good set of 5 defenders and a good 5th mid are good places to start. Then make sure you have 11 players out for gameweek 30 and think about Man City coverage as part of this.

So...which of the two tactics are you leaning towards? Or will the timing of City / Newc basically decide it?

City / Newcastle will likely swing it for me but I'll be getting in Hart and Aguero before gw30 in preparation for it being in gameweek 34. If its not I can back out with my wildcard in week 33.

Not necessarily as doing that you will likely forego points between now and a time where you can make a more informed decision.

I'm aiming to WC for DGW37 but struggling to put out a decent side in gw35. As a result I'm thinking of wildcarding 35 rather than 36. Any thoughts on this?

This could work but would rely heavily on Man City vs Newcastle and two other teams having a game in 35 and a double in 37 to get the most out of it.

Yeah, I might not want Leicester player for the last 3. Anyway, I've been way too casual this season to plan the rest of the season at once. Good post still, going to use it next GW when I think of my GW30 plans. My big problem is that I've got the players from the right clubs, but I've got the wrong players.

Nope, not them. I've got some 3 players from what I think are right teams to have players from now, but who are not nailed-on. I don't think Giroud is wrong though, but I also don't think Arsenal players are good to have with their tough schedule now.

Great work but a quick question on Liverpool.
Liverpool has a GW30 game postponed versus Chelsea, I guess to be playve in GW 34
Assuming, That Everton does qualify for the semi final of the FA Cup they will have to replay their GW35 fixture in GW37 and then wehn does the Liverpool/Everton happens ?

    55. Jedi_Reed
      • 8 Years
      8 years, 2 months ago

So just to clarify, do you have to play wildcard and BB/TC chips on separate GW's? For instance, wildcard GW 33, play that team for a week, then bench boost on GW 34. Or can you use the wildcard and bench boost both on GW 34?

This is fantastic Balders. One thing, do Everton players not come into the same category as a liverpool players. They have a blank this week AND gameweek 30. So they will get two double gameeweeks somewhere along the line? Although they could also blank gw 35?

        • 10 Years
        8 years, 2 months ago

Yeah they're a minefield I ignored as there's so many possibilities but the could end the season like Liverpool or they could have 3 DGWs or they could have a DGW and a TGW.

        1. Zizoulicious
          • 8 Years
          8 years, 2 months ago

Fair enough, so many permutations still. That's another reason for saving wc till gw 36 I guess, as long as your squad is in good shape going into gw34.

Also deoending in when City, Newcastle and Liverpool matches get rescheduled, is it possible there could be up to 12 dgw teams in gw 37 - the four semi finalists, their opponent plus the afore mentioned teams?

            • 10 Years
            8 years, 2 months ago

I think due to a limit in there permutations the most we could have is 10 teams in dgw37 but that'd still be awesome to see. Everything should become clearer after the quarter finals.

            1. Zizoulicious
              • 8 Years
              8 years, 2 months ago

Makes sense. So could have up to 10 teams playing from a possible 12/13 teams. How did you work that out - did you look at the optimum teams to get through the quarters in terms of not playing each other in the prem GW 35 already?

                8 years, 2 months ago

Seriously Suarez, i've been watching Barca alot recently and the man is in form, his shot-to-goal ratio is immense, Sanchez is simply not in form right now.

Look for Arsenal's goal scorers against Hull to shine again against Barca

          50 quid over 0.5 Goals.
3 quid no goal scorer at another bookies.
Your covered then either way. My free 50s going on Suarez FGS.
Ibrahimovic came in last week, gotta love this offer!

Why is Ayew not being even considered in front of Siggy as Swans cover in these parts?

Agreed Siggy is the creator for the team but isnt Ayew better FPL wise as he is more goal oriented?
