Analysing The Fantasy Football Veterans

I started this series of articles with the idea to track the best and the most experienced Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers around.

For this study I have selected 34 managers, including those from the top of the FFScout Hall of Fame, former FPL winners and those who work for FFScout as moderators or contributors.

This group offers something different from other groupings, such as the top 10,000 ranked manager, as many have a strong track record of doing well in multiple seasons and all have a huge bank of memories to fall back on. So when double Gameweeks and blanks arise it is a situation this group are well versed in and when fixtures fall favourably for a team, this group of FPL stalwarts tend to pounce on their assets quickly.

But another reason I wanted to focus on this group is that for a number of reasons 2015/16 has been tough so far for those with more experience. Leicester lead the Premier League, while for a time Chelsea were amongst the relegation places. This means their experience has counted for little at times as new trends take hold. Another change has been the advent of chips, enabling triple captaincy for a week or to bring all of a bench into play. I was keen to find out how this group would tackle these new strategies.

This series started in Gameweek 15 this season and with a dozen weeks of Gameweek data already included I thought I’d take a moment to look in more detail at this group of veterans to analyse how they have fared in previous seasons as well as recap on how they are performing this year.

A Decade’s worth of FPL experience

Season 2006/07 was the first FPL season where histories were collected.  Nine veterans were involved in all nine of these previous seasons and the veterans’ average is seven previous seasons.

Previous Season Finishes

kav2

Amongst the veterans 74% have at least three top 10,000 finishes under their belt and 29% have at least three top 1,000 final season rankings. One manager has an incredible eight top 10,000 finishes.

The next chart shows the average overall position of our veterans in the previous seasons. Of course, last year all of them participated (34), while, for example, in the season 2008/09 just 21 of 34 veterans were active so the average overall position for that year is based on 21 managers, not 34.

kav3

For five seasons out of nine the average overall position of this group was within the top 100,000. The best overall average position was 48,939, in 2013/14.

SEASON 2015/16

Average Gameweek points (Gameweeks 1-26)

The next chart shows the average Gameweek points this campaign.

kav 4

The crucial week for our veterans was Gameweek 8 when Sergio Aguero scored five goals against Newcastle. That week, the veterans’ average was an incredible 102.56 points, while the top 10,000 managers’ average was a mere 59.3 points and the overall average was 55 points. Here there experience shone through; with memories of Aguero’s Gameweek 8 haul against Spurs in 2014/15 still fresh in their mind, they once again turned to a reliable FPL player who had a strong home fixture against a weak defence.

Average overall position (Gameweeks 1-26)

kav5

But their joy was to be short-lived. Just once, after Gameweek 23, was their average overall position inside the top 100,000 – 92.620.

Nevertheless it could have been much worse if it was not for Aguero’s Gameweek 8 haul. In Gameweek 7 their average overall position was 500,761 but after Gameweek 8  it was 125,857! This is a staggering 374,904 places better! Their average overall position now sits at 133,436 but with careful planing around the impending blank fixtures and double Gameweek they look well placed to continue their ascent up the rankings.

Next Year’s Veterans’ Study

From the 2016/17 season I will start this article series from Gameweek 1. Also it will feature an expanded line-up of veterans. Before the season gets underway I will offer the chance for more to take part with some criteria in place. While not finalised, this is likely to be at least five FPL seasons and a minimum of two top 10,000 finishes.

A few days before new season starts, I want to publish how many managers are included, what their average overall position the season before was and their average Hall of Fame position.

Kavali `In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.`

2006/07 was not the first FPL season though! It's just the first where Season Histories date back to.

I have been playing this game since 2001 so I really am a veteran, although my history only shows me as playing from 2005/6 due to me using different log-ins and different usernames until then!

It is a great bit of analysis though. Apologies for coming straight in with a criticism

It will be interesting to see how this season ends up, whether the vets do worse the 2011/12 season.

I'm curious as to why that was such a bad year.

Great work Kavali. Do you have any idea how many teams you will look at next season? Are you just increasing it to say 20 or really upping it to 50 or 100?

Thanks, I'm glad that you like this series of articles. I don't know, I must consult with Jonty and with others FFS team members. Everyone will have a chance to participate. And it will be bigger sample that's for sure. It's not an easy task, I have some programs, some tables, but some thing I must do manually.

Thanks. I guess you need to find a balance as you don't want to spend all your time doing this! The information is incredibly useful though as people with consistently high finishes really do know what they are doing. Keep up the good work 🙂

Always a good read. I don't judge myself to have had a good game week unless I beat the veteran average

Another fascinating article, Kavali - I look forward to joining your veterans gang next season if the qualification conditions are not tightened too much before then.

(My own record in my six previous seasons: four top 35k finishes including two top 4k finishes, average finishing position 80,590th).

Thanks! Good history, keep it up in this very strange season. I don't know what conditions will be set up for the next season, we didn't talk about it yet. We may ask community to hear their opinions in hot topic or so. I guess it will also depend how many FFS members will be interesting to be a part of the veteran sample for the next season.

Thanks for the reply. I know that there are plenty around here with more top 10k and top 1k finishes than myself, but I would be pleased to be part of your veterans sample if I still qualify.

Will you be creating a mini-league for volunteer participants? You could then perhaps base your sample on, say, the top ten in the Hall of Fame plus the players in this mini-league. Hopefully the qualifying Mods and Contributors might agree to join this mini-league - if not, then perhaps they could be used as the third part of your sample.

I beat the veterans averages in 4 of my 6 completed seasons, but perhaps my results would appear less impressive compared with the veterans medians. It might be interesting to see some tables referring to median positions each season as well as or instead of the average ones.

There are a couple of web sites where you can find stats (most captained players, top starting players, average points...) for Top 10,000 managers and overall. But this season with the chips, you can see that almost 50% of managers in the top 10,000 already used Triple Captain chip and more than 60% already used Bench Boost (according to FPL Discovery). And overall 50% teams are dead .So, idea was to track the veterans, I wanted to know their top starting players, their cap choices... Veterans stats must be the most accurate. That was my main idea, and this is all new for me. It is a very tough task to decide who is the veteran and who is not. This time, I selected all the teams. Next season, I will certainly ask all of the FFS regulars for help. And with the FFS Team, we will together create a new veterans sample. But right now, I simply don't know anything. It is too early to talk about mini leagues or qualification conditions. I have a huge help from Jonty and after GW38, we will talk about future plans. And I will certainly ask community for their opinions. I mention above, veterans stats must be the most important in FPL (compared to Top10,000 and overall stats), so before the new season start, we must carefully choose a sample. Cheers.
