Tracking The Fantasy Football Veterans – Gameweek 33

As we expected, almost every single Fantasy Premier League veteran that I’m tracking used their Wildcard chip in Gameweek 33, with a view to Bench Boosting in Gameweek 34. Also, Romelu Lukaku was the top captain choice with an on-paper easy Double Gameweek (DGWK) against Watford and Crystal Palace.

But the dream of a huge points haul swiftly turned to a nightmare. Lukaku failed to deliver any attacking returns and Liverpool picked Gameweek 33 to rotate many of the veterans’ newly acquired players. Another popular acquisition, Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, also found himself on the bench.

To add further salt into the veterans’ wounds many of their most popular transfers out delivered, notably Leicester defenders and Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld. Of the 34 veterans in this study, made up of Hall of Fame table-toppers, FFScout moderators and contributors as well as former FPL winners, just one now has Alderweireld in their side. Meanwhile, ownership of Leicester defender Christian Fuchs has halved from 35.29% to 15.71%.

CHIPS

kav331

An incredible 91.18% of the veterans decided to used their Wildcard Chip this Gameweek, and 5.88% activated their Triple Captain Chip. All, except one, gave the armband to Lukaku. Those veterans who used their Triple Captain Chip had the highest Gameweek score, mainly because they didn’t Wildcard this week and had kept their key single Gameweek players, particularly from Leicester’s and Spurs’ ranks.  Those veterans who didn’t use any Chips in Gameweek 33 all had better scores than the Wildcarders.

VETERANS’ TEMPLATE

kav332

This table shows players ownerships amongst all the veterans after Gameweek 33 (not just among veterans who used their Wildcard).

MOST POPULAR PLAYERS

Top Starting Players

kav333

* stats for top 10,000 teams and overall can be found here.

I have added players’ points in Gameweek 33, so it is easier to compare veterans and top 10,000 templates. It is pretty clear who had the better average Gameweek score this week when you see so many Leicester and Spurs players in the top 10,000 managers’ teams. In addition, the veterans dumped Leicester’s two-goal hero Jamie Vardy in their droves, while he happily sits in four out of ten of the top 10,000 managers’ teams.

CAPTAINS

kav334

The only veteran not to captain Romelu Lukaku was Evs, who captained Dimitri Payet by accident. The Everton striker was also the most popular captain choice overall, and among top 10,000 managers. Sergio Aguero, who scored and gained maximum bonus points, made a difference with 17.10% of top 10,000 managers handing him the armband.

OVERALL RANKINGS

After Gameweek 33, the average overall position of all 34 veteran teams is 38,3123,256 places worst than last week. After Wednesday’s game between Crystal Palace and Everton, the veterans’ average score looks pretty decent and much better than after Sunday’s games. Nevertheless, only 29.41% of veterans gained a green arrow this time around. In addition, the veterans’ average Gameweek 33 score was 65.38 points, better than the overall average (56.70) but worse than the top 10,000 managers’  average (67.10).

While Gameweek 33 saw a slight setback in the veterans’ march up the rankings, their expected use of the bench boost chip in Gameweek 34 and heavy investment in Double Gameweek players could see them back on track.

Kavali `In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.`

Had to dig out the sad face Veterans pic for this.

Slight set back but the march up the rankings will hopefully continue next week.

Probably not that bad, but might not get as many minutes as you would like in the double.

      None.

So for next season would it be best to have a bench boost of good players with one game or rubbish players with 2 games?

Based on this year I think its best to use with a strong bench - which may mean single gameweekers not dgwkers.

So for example Mahrez, Fuchs, TobyA…..I'd be happy to bench boost that lot. CErtainly prefer it to Jagielka (ink) Gabriel (rotation risk) Bolasie (two bad fixtures).

Next year I'll factor in having a better bench rather than simply a dgwk bench.

I dont think we can draw any conclusions yet on a sample size of 1 week. In practice having 15 DGW's should mean a massive score. In reality it was always going to be is a risk to WC a week before you need to given the potential for injuries and rotation.

If Lukaku had banged a hatrick in and the likes of Barkley and Courtinho had scored then I am sure we would have come to a different conclusion.

in hindsight good sgw players, as i have jags{inj} lukaku{doubt} bolassie want out, w/c gw33 to do bench boost but will need to take hits to fill bench, or do triple cap, but would of been happy with sgw like mahrez ali etc, lot of the dgw players may only get 1 game anyway, or sub appearances, but its the chance we take,

You probably have 3 ARS players, so if you go for TC chip now, you must play BB in GW37, and you will have 9-10 DGW'rs plus 3 ARS players against City away. That's not good.

Really like this article, using it in my effort to gain places in the top 10K. I know on the scoutcast there was lots of talk on keeping SGW players, I think that if you did you would have done the same as I did. Kept Mahrez, Fuchs and Kane who all didn't do much, while Vardy, Ali and Alderweireld cleaned up. So even in hindsight this was hard to predict.

I think you are right, I ditched all SGW players, but if I had to choose who to keep, I will probably keep Fuchs, Mahrez, maybe Kane. Toby Alderweireld or Alli for Bench Boost, plus they play against Man Utd - no way! Same thing about Vardy. Veterans are the best managers around, and no one kept Vardy!

Love this article especially as I still have triple Spurs, triple Leicester plus my WC, BB and TC all still in place. The opportunity to rise further up the rankings is massive.

I think WC33's have been very unlucky given the number of injuries this week however it has also influenced my own personal strategy.

WC36 BB37 is dead to me, I think the evidence (albeit on a sample size of 1 week) is that you need an awful lot of luck to WC then have 15 DGW players to BB.

New strategy for me is now BB34 (15 fit and nailed on players albeit a lot of SGW players) then WC37 to get just 11 DGW players. TC can be played GW35 or GW36.

Problem with BB38 is rotation in the last Gameweek

True, this would be full of risks, but explosive potential points on those games are undeniable

Gameweek 34 is also full of potential if Sakho, Coutinho, Firmino, Gabriel all play. Maybe big "if", but certainly a lot of potential.

Yess this gw has a lot of potential too. Cannot decide when to BB, or even to TC this week or not. Which one will you choose?

I have no injury problems, but looking to swap Bolasie, probably will get Firmino.

So, BB 34 with potentially 15 DGW players.

100% of veterans have Lukaku in their squads, 73.10% in top 10K. So if I transfered him out for a hit, and he plays, he can hurt me so bad. If he doesn't play, well, everyone else have him, not a problem. Jagielka, Bolasie, Janmaat and Palace defenders must be a prime targets for selling, so Lukaku's ownership shouldn't drop that much.

These articles are great, thanks. Minor quibble - like many of the articles on this site there is absolutely no need for the percentages to be displayed to two decimal places. Rounding to nearest whole number would make them much clearer without losing any genuine information

Is there an original post that you detail who your sample is? I can't seem to find any articles older than GWK17 version of this post. It would be good to keep the original sample linked in your weekly posts 🙂
