Scout Squad

The Scout Squad – Gameweek 5

Our esteemed panel of Fantasy Football Scout regulars and Hall of Fame #1 Peter Kouwenberg have been taking a bit of a Scout Squad beating this season.

They’re now turning to some big-ticket players to reverse their fortunes, with star names from Spurs, both Manchester clubs and Liverpool among their budget-busting suggestions this week.

But they know the numbers, and that means there’s plenty of cheap options they’ll be hoping will make them cheerful as well, with a lot of love for Newcastle United keeper Rob Elliot in particular.

But Mark’s new-found taste for stirring the pot promises all manner of bickering, and Liverpool tyro Trent Alexander-Arnold is likely to be a major flash point, although he has an ally in Peter for that particular battle.

We’ll be back with the gory details of their deliberations before Gameweek 5’s Friday night kick-off, but here’s a look at their thoughts in the meantime.

Paul says…

Manchester City and United, along with Spurs and Liverpool, play a big part in my thinking – the four teams supply a combined nine of the 15 players.

I’ve opted for a handful of differentials based on recent statistics.

Palace’s Scott Dann had four efforts in the box last weekend and hosts a Southampton side that have conceded more aerial attempts than any other. That could allow Dann (and team-mate Christian Benteke) the chance to profit as the Eagles look to regroup after the departure of Frank de Boer.

Huddersfield’s Tom Ince is ranked third top among FPL midfielders for attempts on goal over the first four Gameweeks. The winger fired six efforts in Monday’s loss at West Ham and now entertains a Leicester City outfit that has conceded a chance every 5.4 minutes – only two sides boast inferior records.

Joselu and Eric Choupo-Moting go head-to-head at St James’ Park, with both looking in fine form following summer moves to Newcastle and Stoke City respectively.

No player in the Premier League has registered more shots on target than Joselu’s nine this season. That’s all the more impressive when you consider he didn’t make his debut until Gameweek 2 as a second-half sub away to Huddersfield.

And Choupo-Moting’s statistics suggest that his double against United may be a sign of what’s to come. Since making his first start for the Potters in Gameweek 2, only Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku have produced more shots inside the box than the Cameroon international’s nine.

Mark says…

I stirred the hornet’s nest in the ScoutCast and I’m doing it again with my squad. I’m just a rabble rouser these days.

For starters, I’m firmly backing Dele Alli over Christian Eriksen.

The Dane will surely be the more weary of the two heading into Saturday’s meeting, with Alli suspended from tonight’s game.

On top of that, Alli has offered the greater goal threat (7 shots v 4) and matched Eriksen for chances created with six apiece in home matches. I fail to see an advantage for the Dane going into the Swansea clash.

Elsewhere, I’ve also stuck to my guns with the selection of Rob Elliot in goal and Trent Alexander-Arnold in defence.

At just 4.0, I don’t see a case to overlook the Magpies stopper. The Newcastle defence can be backed against Stoke and Elliot has shown that he has an advantage when it comes to the Bonus Points System.

As for Alexander-Arnold, he sat out the European tie with Sevilla and I believe that’s with a start against Burnley in mind.

Jurgen Klopp likes his full-backs to attack, particularly down the right with Mohamed Salah tucked inside. Last season Nathaniel Clyne received more passes in the attacking third than any other full-back – although you’d hardly know it as Clyne only mustered two assists.

Alexander-Arnold has more about him in attacking areas.

I think he will be preferred over Joe Gomez in matches against teams that need breaking down and Burnley at Anfield fits that profile exactly.

With corners and direct free-kicks in his armoury and a price tag of 4.5, resistance is surely futile, although I’m bound to face another round of it come Friday’s Scout Picks.

Jonty says…

Our 83 million budget will be severely tested this week, with heavy hitters among the ranks of Spurs, Chelsea and both Manchester clubs all having strong fixtures.

As a result, I’ve opted for a sprinkling of budget options to help accommodate as many premium picks as we can.

Among the pricey options, Spurs’ talisman and current captain poll leader Harry Kane looks a shoo-in.

His brace last weekend at Goodison Park and a home tie against a Swansea side with a dire record this campaign in terms of conceding chances and shots in the box just cannot be ignored.

I’d also like to see his team-mate Christian Eriksen, who also scored against Everton and has only failed to deliver returns once this season, involved.

FPL’s top points scorer Ben Davies is another essential pick for me. He has two double-digit scores out of four and offers great value at 5.7.

Romelu Lukaku, with attacking returns in three out of four, is up against former club Everton at Old Trafford and is another I fancy to prosper, as is a City attacker, away to a Watford side they demolished 5-0 at Vicarage Road last season.

Gabriel Jesus is my favoured Sky Blues option – he’s scored three in his last two.

The Gunners have shipped 13 goals in their last four league trips to Stamford Bridge, which makes Chelsea representation key for me.

Of the three Blues candidates I’ve put forward, I’ll be particularly keen to see Eden Hazard included as he’s scored in three of his last four home matches against Arsene Wenger’s troops.

My cast of cheap enablers is dominated by Newcastle assets, including stopper Rob Elliot and set-piece specialist Matt Ritchie.

The Geordies host a Stoke side that has only mustered three shots on target in their two away run-outs.

At 4.9, Bournemouth’s attack-minded defender Charlie Daniels looks another excellent value selection. He’s at home to a Brighton side that have the joint-worst tally of close range shots conceded this season.

Peter says…

Having championed Sadio Mane and Paul Pogba in last week’s picks (both now dead wood in my post-Wildcard team), plus Tom Heaton, I’m wary of cursing any more of my own players this week, particularly writing this with European fixtures ongoing.

But Spurs and Liverpool are the obvious triple-ups, with both sides more than capable of serving up a goal fest and their respective opponents, Swansea and Burnley, vulnerable enough to play their part.

Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Ben Davies are no brainers, with Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and (subject to Champions League exertions) Trent Alexander-Arnold my Anfield aces.

Apparently, it is madness to do the same thing repeatedly and expect different results and my Hornet-happy mates have been quick to point out my unsuccessful backing of Watford’s opponents.

Nonetheless, I’m backing Manchester City to keep doing what they do at Vicarage Road and am turning to Gabriel Jesus and, after being impressed with his attacking intent, Benjamin Mendy for my final premium-rate players before the bargain hunt.

Newcastle, West Ham and Brighton all have inexpensive midfielders who have – albeit sporadically – impressed, so Matt Ritchie, Michail Antonio and Pascal Groß complete a modest midfield.

Newcastle also offer the potential of cheap clean sheet points through Rob Elliot and Jamaal Lascelles.

The Community Champion

Representing the Community against the Scouts in Gameweek will be Graeme Sumner, aka Gregor. He is expected to provide a stern test as he is in our Career Hall Top 5 and finished in 29th spot overall last season.

The community champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2017/18 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

Gameweek 4’s champion Darth_Krid defeated the Scouts by 36 to 33. But the manager to beat remains Malcolm Tucker for England Manager, who won by a 29-point margin in Gameweek 3.

Considering dropping Foster next week for a 4.0 GK and just play Elliot.
This means the following week I can upgrade Mbemba to a 4.5 defender (5th) - or do both at once in 2 weeks time.
Im a little nervous not having a playing 5th def as I have players like TAA and Jones who could easily get rotated or injured.
Although this leaves me no flexibility with GKs if Elliot gets injured/Dropped.
This sound like a good idea?
    Team below:

    Elliot
    Davies, Jones, Alexander-Arnold
    Eriksen, Salah, Mkhitaryan, Loftus-Check
    Kane, Lukaku, Firmino

    Foster*, Carroll, Naughton, Mbemba*

If you do so go for Krul.. good chance of fighting for the 1st spot. Wouldnt worry to much about Mbemba though. He played brilliantly b4 the injury and you got cover in Naughton. I dont see Jones as a rotation risk.. Mourinho loves him

Yeah if I do go with 4.0 keeper it's likely to be Krul. Just a shame Darlow isn't 4.0 that way I'd have a guaranteed keeper

Can't say I like having 4.0s at all, but would rather have a 5th defender with your backline!

Yeah my budget is maxed so I'm going to have to have a 4.0 somewhere in the team whether it's a def or gk is what I need to decide

I think a lot of people, me included are going Elliot & 4.0 on their wildcards.

I would invest the extra £0.5m in midfield upgrading RLC, rather than defence though.

There isnt any 5.0 mids that really take my fancy tbh. Maybe only Atsu who's playing well but not scoring big. I,lol wait and see but I think RLC and Carroll rotation is suffice at the moment.

For those stuck between Morata and Jesus.

The members stats are definitely interesting! I think Morata's ability to get assists as well as goals could be a factor. It's like splitting hairs in reality though!

Then go for the one who is almost guaranteed to play 90mins each week, i.e not Jesus

Look at Jesus goals to game ratio, minutes makes little difference. I still remember by biggest mistake in Fantasy Football, not getting in a cheap Ole Gunnar Solksjaer. He hardly played, super sub, but still finished the season with a big haul

For my sanity I'd rather have the guy guaranteed to start each week, with no chance of getting hauled off at half time then.

My point being that Jesus will play 90% of games, imo is going to be top scorer in the premier league. Morata is good but its his first season. I just can't see him keeping his goal rate up. But its all opinions!

And that's why we love this game! I really went for Morata for the 0.5m difference but both are equally viable options, the problem is you can't have them all!

Good luck this season, I'm sure I will look at Jesus with envy some weeks and some weeks others will look in envy at Morata.

I did the same with Mendy and Kola! I guess Kola's ability to get into the box and present a headed threat is also a factor. However are Arsenal going to score as much as City, probably not but his involvement could be greater.

Pretty solid start for me and up to about 500k after quite good GW4. Couple of problematic players in my team (Willian and Stephens) which I have to deal with in the coming weeks. Wildcard also in tact so overall pleased with my situation. Its very close at the moment so trying to build just solid base to climb up the ranks as the season continues

Jesus could be a rotation risk, but has way better fixtures and Will get more points if he starts all games.

Morata has bad fixtures, but is cheaper and not a rotation risk...

Flip a coin. I did Jesus to Morata last week.. didnt go to well since Jesus banged in two goals.. still Linda regretting it because I believe him or Aguero Will be the best captain option gw6..

Struggling with my moves again this week

    A) Bertrand>Davies (more a case of me wanting Davies than wanting to sell Bertrand)
    B) Dann>Jones
    C) Gabbiadini>Chicharito
    D) Gabbiadini>Joselu
    E) Save FT?

    Elliot
    Bertrand - Dawson - Dann
    Eriksen - Salah - Ramsey - Brady
    Kane - Lukaku - Gabbiadini

Sub: Forster, Carroll, Mee, Mbemba (might start Forster if I sell Bertrand)

Yes, i had him from the get-go, figuring he might get that wing back role nailed at Arsenal, now the move to Liverpool.

Question is, will you want him long term ?
He plays in one of the most attack minded teams.
It also allows for more cash at the back.

Morning Andy, lots of discussion on this last night in the DZ.

      http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/16460978

I made the move from Gabbi to Joselu.

And will upgrade Pogba to Salah.

If we look at Ritchie and Firmino or Salah and Joselu, the second just seems to bring a lot more benefit to the team.

Think it was scoutcast that convinced me!

Hey Andy. Might I make a suggestion.

Wasnt one of the problems getting Firmino that he has risen 0.1 and you couldn't make the easy transfer?

Why not go Vardy instead? He's 8.5 and also on penalties and good fixtures. You have Salah to "cover" LIV/Firmino
      - I know you don't believe in cover neither do I 😉

Does doing Gabbi > Vardy make your 2nd transfers easier by saving that 0.1?

Vardy doesn't make it that much easier really. Would just mean I have £5m to spend on a defender and not 4.9

A lot of them are kinda meh atm. I'm hoping Newcastle's defense becomes more settled soon. I think Yedlin could be a solid 4.4m defender if he's nailed on (and it seems Newcastle fans heavily prefer him to Manquillo fwiw)
Lowe is potentially a penalty taker, so hopefully Huddersfield gets a penalty soon so we could find out XD

Have Lowe already 😆 budget defence ftw. I also have Elliot as my only goalie, so Newc not an option. Probably just going to get Mee

Personally I think Newcastle could be like Burnley last season and provide a solid amount of CS, so I'm actually a bit interested in a cheap defensive double up.
Rafa prefers very strong organization first and foremost, and Mikel Merino looks like an excellent CDM so far

Fraser and (when he returns) Stanislas could be great value if Bournemouth could find the scoring form of last season. Not sure what's gone wrong with them this season. They should be a lot better

I'm well happy with my WC

    Foster
    Alonso Kola jones Davies
    Erikson gross moting
    Lukaku Kane firminho

    Eliot Cedric Carrol Barry

I know the midfield is a bit ropey but I might just rotate good cheap midfielders through the season e.g Ritchie, Richarlison, Jesé etc.

I have cash free for a erikson to hazard transfer in a week or so.

So I did WC it was too tempting! I've chopped and changed my team a 1000 times trying to choose between Kane Jesus Firmino Morata Alli Mkhi Salah KBD etc. Currently have:

    De Gea / Elliot

Davies Danilo Zanka Kiko Fermina & Naughton

    Mkhi Alli Moting Gross Doucoure

    Jesus Firmino Kane.

Thinking next week to swap Danilo (worried about not starting every game w/ Walker - should be this week due to resting in CL) & Firmino for Morata + some cheap def.

    OR

This week: dropping Kane for Morata, upgrading Gross to Salah and dropping more money from De Gea to Fab.

      • 9 Years
      7 years, 1 month ago

I am sorry to say that but Gross Moting and Docoure in one team doesn't look like a WC team.

I like Moting, Gross & Doucoure are more about saving money than anything else. I can't afford any higher priced mids. Not convinced about any 5m mid.

I'd have morata over Jesus, firmino is too cheap for his price and has penalties (even if he did miss one last night)

Not sure about Morata v Arsenal although Liverpool have already took them apart.

City have a much easier tie at Watford. Although Morata was rested while Jesus was not & played the whole game.
