The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Man United

After finishing seventh under former manager David Moyes in the previous campaign, 2014/15 was a transitional one for Man United. New boss Louis van Gaal splashed the cash on the likes of Angel Di Maria, Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw, in addition to drafting in Radamel Falcao on a season-long loan, yet despite having no European fixtures to concern themselves with, the Old Trafford outfit struggled for cohesion in the Dutchman’s first year at the helm.

Certainly, in front of their own fans, United were a real force to be reckoned with. Van Gaal’s side scored 41 home goals – a tally bettered only by neighbours City (44) – yet on the road, they were a different prospect altogether and netted just 21 times, only two more than relegated QPR.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    From Sky

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has not agreed a deal with Fenerbahce, according to his agent.

There were some reports across the British press on Saturday that the Dutchman was nearing a move to Turkey, but his intermediary has said he will be at training at Carrington tomorrow.

Kees Vos told Voetbal international: “If Robin had found a new club, we would have announced it. And I’m in the Netherlands right now.

“All I can say that tomorrow Robin will simply report at Manchester United for the first training session.”

            😀

LEI and SWA are 2 defences I would be interested in as they are both strong at home and have perfect rotation but just too much for me

I am still finalising my rotation options but my current plan is

            1 keeper + 4.0

A big defender to play every week, 3 mid-priced-budget defenders to rotate for 2 spots, 1 cheap bench fodder

With most transfers being made in the attacking positions usually it is important to have a very solid back line. A little investment in one or two of those positions allows for a easier move/shuffle should a defence prove leaky. I usually risk with just one of ARS or CHE to start in the hopes of getting some cheaper cleanies. Risk/Reward.

Rooney, Mata and Smalling are the obvious United options atm. A lot could change between now and the start of the season though, I'd expect a fair few players to be brought in.

Problem is that there are so many options it's hard to know which to go for. Think I'll go for safer options at first and then hop on whichever bandwagon looks the most promising later. I'd sooner use the ft to bring in someone I know is playing well than use it to get a bad pick out of the team in a hurry.

        From Sky

More meat on the bone of the Toby Alderweireld story... it is understood Atletico failed to cancel a £6.8million buy-out clause in the Belgian international's contract, which, if they had cancelled, would have resulted in them paying Saints an agreed £1.5million 'compensation' fee.

It is thought the clause, which was part of Alderweireld's loan deal at Saints last season, has not been cancelled in time, leaving Saints feeling confident they will sign the 26-year-old

As do I. But I am a tad unsure as to where his heart lies, I remember him saying something a number of months ago about not knowing if he wanted to remain at Southampton, that he had a number of options.

I, for one, think he'd be barking mad to swap the Saints for Spurs, a team that is ruining talent left, right and centre.

well apparently Spurs have agreed a fee with Athletico for him (around £8m) but as part of his loan deal Saints had a clause that allowed them to make the deal permanent for just under £7m

Athletico had to option to buy Saints out of that clause but Saints believe the deadline for them to do so has expired and so, as long as Saints are prepared to meet the fee agreed in the deal (which they are) they have first option on the player.

They are threatening legal action if he goes elsewhere

I put this idea forward last year for the Scout Team challenge (although it was Top 6, not 4) - I think they did the opposite and avoided the top 4 last year. I reckon it'd still be a good challenge as budget constraints would mean they would need to get a few peripheral players.

Bit tight on budget alright but with the right cheapies to sub in it might do okay. More easily affordable if one were to go 4:4:2. Bit lacking in captain picks also.

There's something fundamentally wrong with the British mentality IMO

    Rory McIllroy
    Lewis Hamilton
    Andy Murray

These are 3 guys at the very top of their respective sports and yet for some reason the majority of the British public, instead of celebrating this, seems to love to hate them. Crazy

I guess it can be hard to tell, maybe the image he presents to us is different to the what he's like with those that know him

There's a difference between not finding someone likeable and celebrating when they get knocked-out/don't win

            1. Somalion
              • 14 Years

Well perhaps my perspective is different as an Irishman. I don't find Murray moody, just dull as hell. A wet carrot has more personality.

That is not my gripe, though. My gripe is how every year when Wimbledon rolls around the Murray hype begins. He tore apart a woeful Robin Haase but was praised for overcoming a "tricky" opponent (whom he beat 6-1, 6-1 in the first two sets). Following this came Nadal being knocked out, and an interview with the unseeded player, Dustin Brown, who beat him was broadcast for about a minute. After this was a 5/10 minute interview with Murray about his Haase victory again, about his wedding and about videos of him and his dogs.

Essentially, I think the media make people hate him, that is how I feel anyway (though I don't hate him, just enjoy if he's knocked out so that pillow faced Sue Barker will shut her gob for a bit).

I don't follow golf at all so can't really say much about McIlroy.

Been an F1 fan since the mid 90's and got into Tennis a little after that. Always really liked Hamilton to be honest, though I can see why he's not to everyone's liking.

Murray is a class act IMO. When the only thing people can 'pick on you' about is your monotone, then you've pretty much got it made. I think he is making a concious effort to show more of his personality. And I'd rather a respectable man like him be up there in the sport than that bratty Aussie Kyrigos who has no respect for anyone but himself.

I don't know why McIlroy is always on the Irish news. Just find out where his loyalties are RTÉ and report on him or not. They'll jump on anything even remotely Irish or remotely successful. 🙄

How is it ignorant, I have no issue with McIlroy, but with RTÉ and their small dog syndrome, always just covering Irish things even when their very insignificant for the news. Of course its an Irish news channel, its just when they talk of some athlete in an obscure sport who finished in a farther down position. It makes no sense when more important things are happening. It's just a pet peeve of mine, and I only mention loyalties because the claiming of successful people is another peeve I have with news outlets.

I don't think people "hate" them...although they may use that word to describe not likening them. Andy Murray is just a dull monotone who is quite hard to warm to sometimes. Agreed...At least most golfers can put together a few decent shots in a round, even crappy amateurs like me.

I think the 1 round vs Mayweather is the only one where it possible to 'not lose'.

      Mayweather or McIlroy.

Though I think I'd have a better chance of going for more than a single round vs Mayweather than a whole course vs McIlroy. Never played gold in my life!

Well I'd lose to Bolt by about 5 seconds so bar running away from Mayweather, it's not a close thing at all

100m vs Bolt - I know how to tie my shoes & run so, it can't be this one.

1 round vs Mayweather - See above.

18 holes vs McIlroy - I've swung a golf club a few times so, this wouldn't be the worst thing ever.

1 set vs Djokovic - He would pelt me with tennis balls & all I could do is use the racket to protect my face / junk depending.

Djokovic easily. I'd lose against the others either quickly (100m and boxing) or slowly (golf). But I'd still play my own game - except boxing where I'd just try to parry the punches. I wouldn't return a single ball to Djokovic.

100m vs Bolt. I'd obviously lose them all, but at least I could train to put up something against the rest. All the sprinting conditioning in the world and I'd still never get near Bolt.

Golf. I am awful at Golf. This would be the worst.

I'd be most comfortable on court vs Djokovic, confident I'd take some points.

He's got the wrong religion there then, if he's after seeing the light. He needs to worship R'hllor 😉

... for the night is dark and full of terrors. Though perhaps Adebayors career being revived isn't worth the immolation of a few fringe players, though then again he may be priced favourably... 😉

Doesn't sound good. He was "brainwashed by Islamic spiritual healers" a few months ago. He could easily end up down the wrong path.

So Adebayor has been "brainwashed by Islamic spiritual healers". Headline could easily read "Adebayor's Fundamentalist Christian family refuse to accept his converting to Islam"

I'm not defending him, nor have I known about this till now but it's clear to see the media bias. Why isn't what Ade said the headline or the narrative. Instead it's what his brother said. I'm just saying, don't know what happened

We don't know he "He was "brainwashed by Islamic spiritual healers" a few months ago" the article cites a family member for this quote.

And, in certain West African countries *Juju* is very real.

So, seeing as athletes are already an incredibly superstitious bunch this wouldn't necessarily be a stretch for Adebayor to believe it could be the reason for his recent decline.

(Forgetting the fact that's he on the wrong side of 31, hasn't ever been known to train hard & is also *unique* personality to deal with off the pitch.)

I don't think anyone should get offend Licky. We're just pointing out that because he converted TO Islam he was "brainwashed". If he converted FROM Islam he would've been "enlightened".Media hypocrisy, goes for any religion

One to maybe take note of for you all

Having missed the Euro U21s Luke Shaw was placed on a special exercise and diet programme over the summer.

He's reported to have lost 3kgs and has heavily impressed LvG with his commitment to the programme. With Rojo likely to get an extended break after the America (and frankly looking decidedly average at left-back in the tournament) it looks like a straight fight between Shaw and Blind for the starting berth at left-back

I wouldn't be surprised if it was Shaw who started v Spurs as reward to sticking with what was asked of him
