Scout Report – Tyrone Mings

In a statement of real intent from the Premier League new boys, Bournemouth snapped up Ipswich Town defender Tyrone Mings in a deal reported to be worth around £8 million, beating top flight sides Aston Villa and Newcastle United to the left-back’s signature.

Ahead of his debut season in the Premier League, Mings told Cherries Player that he was impressed with the manner in which Cherries boss Eddie Howe meticulously set up his team, adding that their style of play is in stark contrast to what he experienced at Ipswich:

“I’m looking forward to learning from the manager’s ideas. They will be different to what I’m used to but that can only be a good thing. The team’s style was different to anyone else’s in the league. That probably goes back to how in-depth the manager is with everything he does and the group of players he has. They can pull off what he wants them to do – they are well organised and play good football as everyone saw last season. The manager has spoken to me about it and it may be a culture shock to what I was used to. It (Ipswich’s style) wasn’t as easy on the eye I guess, but it worked over 46 games and got Ipswich into the play-offs. To learn off Eddie and Jason though is something I’m really looking forward to.”

The History

The Bath-born Mings originally started his footballing education at Southampton’s academy but was released at the age of 16 following cutbacks to their youth set-up. In the wake of a series of unsuccessful trials at a handful of Football League clubs, Mings signed for non-league outfit Yate Town, before making the switch to Chippenham Town a season later.

Impressed by Mings’ performances for the Nike Academy, Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy called him in for a trial, which eventually led to the Tractor Boys signing the six foot five inches defender for a £10,000 fee. Playing second fiddle to Aaron Creswell, Mings chalked up just four league starts in his first full season for the club, though the former’s move to West Ham last summer then freed up the left-back berth at Ipswich, affording Mings a regular role in the starting XI.

Mings became a permanent fixture of McCarthy’s set-up in the 2014/15 campaign, featuring in all but six of Ipswich’s league ties. He notched one goal and five assists as the Suffolk club went on to qualify for the Championship play-offs by virtue of a sixth-place finish – where they lost to Norwich in the semi-finals. Lauded for his authoritative performances at left-back, Mings was named as the Championship Player of the Month for September.

The Prospects

Mings’ versatility was doubtless one of the chief reasons the Bournemouth hierarchy were willing to sanction such a big-money move for a defender upon their first ever promotion to the top flight. He’s most comfortable at left-back – having started all his matches there last term – but can fill in at right-back and was primarily deployed as a centre-back in the 2013/14 season. Certainly, Arsene Wenger saw enough in the burgeoning talent to declare Arsenal’s interest back in December, while Howe has been quick to reiterate his capacity to keep on improving:

“We are signing a player of huge potential. We believe he has everything required to be a success in the Premier League. He’s a good age as well and I think there’s a lot of scope for him to improve. He’s been linked with Premier League clubs for a long time now and is very highly regarded for his performances for Ipswich. Albeit for a short period of time, he has shown great promise. He fits the mould we are looking for – young, progressive, ambitious and wants to improve. Hopefully it will be a successful period for us coming up and he can be a big part of that.”

Given that Bournemouth can hardly afford the luxury of splurging £8 million on a future prospect, it looks more than likely that Mings is set to usurp incumbent first-choice left-back Charlie Daniel in the Cherries’ starting XI. Although he also offers an option in the heart of Howe’s back-four, the recent arrival of Sylvain Distin suggests he’ll be utilised as a full-back by Howe.

With the attack-minded Simon Francis at the opposing full-back position, Bournemouth’s rearguard could emerge as a viable source of budget defenders. The similarly rangy (six foot four inches) right-back – who was named in the PFA Championship Team of the Season – tallied one goal and eight assists in the previous campaign, highlighting his potential for attacking returns. In terms of key passes, Francis (76) and Mings (55) were the top two most creative defenders in the Championship last season, strengthening the appeal of the Cherries’ attacking assets.

Mings arrives at a club that’s already established a solid culture for defending, having ranked second for goals conceded (45) behind Middlesbrough (37) last term. Distin’s acquisition, allied with the presence of either Artur Boruc or Adam Federici between the sticks should aid their transition to the Premier League as the Cherries look for experience at the back. That said, much of Bournemouth’s success last season stemmed from their offensive philosophy, after netting seven more goals (98) than their nearest rivals, Watford (91). If Howe doesn’t strive to fine-tune their approach, Bournemouth could struggle to batten down the hatches against much sterner opposition.

Bournemouth couldn’t have wished for a much more comfortable start to the new season. Four favourable home clashes (AVL, LEI, SUN, WAT) in the first eight Gameweeks, allied with a trip to Norwich, suggests they could be worth considering as cheap rotation options, with Mings – like most, if not all, of his defensive team-mates – likely to come in at the 4.5 mark. Considering that their fixtures take a turn for the worse beyond Mid-October, early investment in the Championship winners could be key.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Do penalties really matter in choosing a player?

I was just doing some research to answer a comment on Tiggsy's excellent Simple Guide to Fantasy Management article and thought it'd made a good hot topic

Does selecting penalty takers really matter when so few penalties are scored?

Five teams last season only scored one penalty. Two only scored two and five only scored three. That suggests that for most teams penalties are far from a deciding factor when picking players. They are a small added bonus, nothing more.

However, Man City scored seven - that was the most all season of any club.

So for a team like Man City that extra 28 pts plus bonus can go along way for Aguero - if he can stay on the pitch and actually take all his penalties.

But for the likes of Villa and Newcastle who had one goal from a penalty all season selecting the penalty taker seems almost pointless.

A good example is Rooney - he's currently off penalties as far as we know. When I decide on getting him or not getting him penalties will be only a minor consideration.

For Newcastle or Villa for example I'd get the player I think will score most from open play. With just one penalty all last season penalties will not influence my decision.

That said - its's clear for the ultra attacking sides like Man C and Che that their penalty takers are worth getting. But I'd also say that I'd be considering Hazard and Aguero not for the penalties but for their ability to get goals, assists and bonus. If both were off penalties, it wouldn't make me want to get them significantly less.

Finally, Baines - people often cited his penalties (which he no longer has) as a key factor. But for me Baines was all about assist potential as Everton won so few penalties. If Baines assist potential was strong I'd get him in, if not then I wouldn't. Penalties were an irrelevance to him

I disagree on the Baines part every extra goal for a defender is huge when you factor in the bonus points he also gains.

Attacking teams like City, Arsenal, Palace and Liverpool seem to win more pens. So I think it depends on the team.

As you say, it's a bonus, but I'd never select someone like Noble, or the Villa or Newcastle penalty takers (who even are they?) just because they have penalties.

Villa's is Benteke. A good option in his his own right, without penalties

Ah yes of course, then I'd consider him with penalties as a bonus. Basically, it makes good options better, but you can't have a player based solely on penalties.

Depends on the attacking intent of the team and whether the player has other sps in his locker. If Jordan Henderson has all sps next season, then he would be a shoe in, for instance.

They can be the decider when weighing up cheaper options or if you have 2 similarly priced players and have no other way of choosing but I won't get a player simply because he's on or not on pens......generally.

A lot of pen takers are also set piece takers so it's a bit of a loaded question. Hazard being an obvious exception.

        And Kun.

    11. il Brutto
      • 11 Years

I think it can be a big factor in some cases. Baines for example is not nearly as good option without penalties. As we are unlikely to be able to afford all three of Kun, Sanchez, Hazard I think the penalty takers have an edge over the non penalty taker.

    12. Jaffalicious! #SomosCubanos
      • 10 Years

Penalties provide that extra assurance for players who can gain points without doing much in a game (ie. Gerrard or Cazorla) or increase the points ceiling for players who are very attacking like Aguero or Hazard. Captaining a player who also has pens in their locker can also be very rewarding and could increase the points potential even more. This happened last season when Man CIty played Spurs where Aguero scored 2 pens in addition to 4 goals.

That said, not all the Penalty takers are appealing as some of them are either in bad positions (Defensive Midfielders eg. Jedinak) or are from teams who are not worth the investment.

Players who have set-pieces in their lockers give that extra appeal as it increased their chances of getting points through goals/assists. Fabregas and Cazorla were prime examples of this as their Corners, Free-kicks and pens helped them tick along nicely.

Getting a penalty taker for a team who have pacy wingers, dangerous forwards or a tendency to camp out in and around the opponent's box is a no brainier. Last season it was Man City, the previous season it was Liverpool with Suarez especially. If there's a mid-table team who will do this (maybe Palace?) then their penalty taker might be a great cheap option.

Also, penalty takers are often midfielders - Gerrard and now Henderson, Hazard (& Lampard before him), Jedinak, Cabaye at Newcastle (and rumour has it maybe back with Pardew at Palace?), Cazorla, Sinclair at Swansea back in the day - as far as I'm concerned it's a free extra point each time, plus more chance of nabbing an extra bonus or two from a striker.

Finally, a big attraction is that a penalty can come absolutely out of nowhere at any time, regardless of whether the penalty taker is having a shocker, being sat on by two defenders all game, pushed back into defensive duties or generally having the game pass him by. Suddenly, one stupid challenge in the edge of the box or a mindless handball later, and you've got 4-7 points from nothing.

Posted about this before. The answer is basically no. The only rare exceptions being a nailed on pen taker in a team geared towards gaining lots of penalties - but even then in isolation its not a reason for selection, more of an added bonus.

Yep. I think lower than most though. My reasoning is they will have to offer a balance for big hitters. 11.5 for Haz maybe. That is my template price. Some think he will be 12. If there is a 3 mil difference I will go for Fab.

I think it matters more when choosing players at the top end of the pricing scale from bigger teams and at any price scale amongst smaller teams forwards.

The big appeal of big hitters like Hazard and Aguero (Yaya when Aguero is out) is that not only score goals in open play quite often they also take the pens so even when not performing they often are rewarded with a steady source of pts and baps. This year we can add Kane to that list.

Likewise, the likes of Berahino and Austin have greater appeal than strikers of other small teams for the same reasons.

I don't try to fill my team with penalty takers though - just up front and one of the high priced mids - because, as you say, there aren't that many teams that get a regular supply of penalty decisions and in that instance I'd sooner have goal scorers and assist merchants who are key to their sides.

    1. Eze Really?

I like my captain to be on pens. Hence Aguero Hazard. points double up is so important.

Yeah, but from what i recall, and correct me if i'm wrong, but Ramsey was often played on the wing last season. Now they have Walcott fit and nearing 100%, i'm not sure Wenger will want to play him on the wing too often just to accomodate Cazorla. Plus there's Wilshere who was injured for a while last season. I see his minutes being less than last year, and with him being so reliant on pens, i'm not sure he strikes me as a great option on paper

Yep, that's why Suarez and Sterling were so good for that run of penalties Gerrard had. I'll be looking at teams with the ability to win penalties (ie very fast tricksy players that weak defenders will lash out at because they can't cope with their skill). So yes Cazorla could be a good one - but I'd argue Walcott would be better as he's more likely to score and assist from open play - plus he gets 3 pts for every one of those penalties he earns for Cazorla. Cazorla would need to do more than have penalties for me to consider him over Walcott or Ramsey or Sanchez who benefit from strong open play threat.

I'm a big fan of Ramsey. Alot will depend on injuries though. There is so much choice in the Arsenal midfield.

I'm just editing a new community article for publishing tomorrow or later today looking at team's focal points of creativity. Very interesting reading regarding Arsenal in particular, who are the most centrally focused side in the premier league.

Mings had to stay back for most corners last year as all the other 3 defenders (Berra, Chambers, Smith) went up. He looked very dangerous when they did let him go up a couple of times and scored his only goal with a header from a corner. I'd imagine he would get more licence this year.

Has a promoted midfielder ever been 6.0? Usually their best midfielders are 5.5 and strikers 6.0. I do think there's a strong chance of Ritchie being 5.5.

Does anybody remember Whittingham's price when Cardiff came up? I think that's the best comparison for Ritchie.

      To start GW1 I think we'll see:

      Cech
      Debuchy Mert Kos Monreal
      Ramsey Cazorla
      Walcott Ozil Welbeck
      Giroud

I am willing to bet at this moment less than 20% will get the right Arsenal starting lineup for the new season.
Coq, Willshire, The Ox, Sanchez, Caz, Wally, Giroud, Ozil Rosicky, Wllbeck, Rambo. What a choice!
Never mind the defence which won't be easy either.
An element of danger when picking FPL.

If they sign no one else, it's going to be:

      Cech
      Debuchy/Bellerin Mertesacker/Gabriel Koscielny Monreal

      Coquelin Cazorla/Ramsey
      Ramsey/Walcott Ozil Sanchez

      Giroud/Walcott

It is a bit of a minefield.

God knows, this is all presuming they don't sign anyone else (which I think they will). GW1 I'd guess:

          Cech
          Debuchy Mertesacker Koscielny Monreal

          Coquelin Cazorla
          Ramsey Ozil Walcott

          Giroud

When they're all fit, Ozil and Sanchez are the only attacking players I think will be nailed on. Need to wait a few weeks to see what Wenger's thinking.

Yeah. So all Arsenal players fairly premium and it would be mad not have any. I only think Kosi and Czech are 100%. So it is going to be a gamble with a lump of anyone's budget.

Some more likely than others but I broadly agree.

I think a fit Sanchez and a fit Ozil will be the most nailed on.

I disagree. Ospina is decent, but Cech is one of the best in the world. Even more than that, he is someone who has won a lot of trophies. That mentality is vital for Arsenal, a side that have been mentally weak for the last decade.

His mentality will also need to be integrated into Arsenal "filosopheee". He has to forget Chelsea completely. It seems he's a bit bitter and emotionally could impact his performances.

Arsenal's lineup (when all fit) should be:
    Cech
    Bellerin Mertesacker Koscielny Monreal
    Coquelin
    Wilshere Ramsey
    Özil Giroud Alexis

This is what Wenger started with last season but with Arteta in the place of Coquelin. Wilshere and Ramsey are the future of the club and have both expressed their concern of playing on the wing. Cazorla only came into the team because of injuries to those two and Wenger didn't drop of him because of the momentum the team had. **Arsenal vs. Chelsea** in the Community Shield will be a good indicator as to what Wenger will decide to do.

Not really, didn't do much for me, one of our most overrated players. Since City (A) in January he's been so poor until the FA Cup final. Easy decision for me, but I understand why Wenger chose to leave out Wilshere for a while when he came back.

Ozil on the wing is a complete waste of the most gifted player they have. Put Ozil in the middle, with Walcott and Sanchez around him, and he'll destroy teams.

That's an option, 4231 is Arsenal's bread and butter. Coquelin/Ramsey/Walcott/Özil/Alexis/Giroud or Wilshere in the place of Walcott and Walcott up front, but Wenger will be looking long-term so I think he'll return to 4141/433.

Yep. Wenger has been talking about the importance of the 'core' of the team for months now and Cazorla obviously isn't part of that. Ramsey and Wilshere are certainly a big part of that and I'm sure both will start for us next season. Jack showed in what little he played this season that he's better than Santi. Was our best player in UCL qualifiers, dominating display against City and changed the game against United when he came on, England's best player, 10/10 against West Brom, etc.

i think Wenger sees it the same though. He backed Cazorla throughout last season but at the same time, he's more willing to rest him than say Ozil/Sanchez

Previous FPL Opening Dates & Times:

2014/15 - July 16th - 4 weeks 3 days before the start of the season.

    2013/14 - July 15th @15:00 UK - 4 weeks 5 days before the start of the season.

    2012/13 - July 19th @18:00 UK - 4 weeks 2 days before the start of the season.

2011/12 - July 20th @22:30 UK - 3 weeks 3 days before the start of the season. (There was a few false starts the week before.)

2010/11 - July 12th - 4 weeks 5 days before the start of the season.

From this we can tell that FPL likes to release the game 4-5 weeks before the start of the season - if everything's set up right. The start of the 15/16 season is the 8th of August, which means FPL could start up between the 4th and 11th of July.
