The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Southampton

The sceptics were circling ahead of Ronald Koeman’s first year in charge of Southampton after former manager Mauricio Pochettino was followed through the exit door by a number of first-team regulars. The Dutchman proved them wrong, though, and after dipping into the transfer market to acquire the likes of Sadio Mane, Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic and Ryan Bertrand, he guided the Saints to a seventh-place finish – one spot higher than they’d managed under the Argentine in 2013/14.

In this members article, we cast an eye back over Koeman’s first campaign at St Mary’s, analysing the chief goal threats and creators and comparing their overall displays to Pochettino’s only full year at the helm.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Is Henderson inclusion simply saying - "I want someone from Liverpool in my team, they should do well"

I had Azpi before but I prefer Courtois as a cheaper way to get some CHE def coverage. Mert is the 'premium' defender and then there a 2x2 perfect rotations

Courtois not worth the money, a lot of cheaper keepers outscored him last season and will continue to with the bap changes. Azpi is a bap king who will get even more now that tackles count for more bps.

      Not bad

      I came up with this

      Henessey/Ruddy

      Ivan, Soaure, Huth, Francis, Coates

      Hazard, Walcott, Cabaye, Ritchie (Fletcher)

      Rooney, Aguero, Deeney

If needed Theo could become Ozil/Ramsey or Deeney become Ighalo allowing Cabaye to become Chadli or Hendo etc

This is what I like. Having Bassong over Souare though for his goal threat. Also Özil and Hendo for me over Wally and Cabaye.

with that draft 8.5 is the most I can afford om keepers

I'm gambling on Henessey going to WBA and becoming number 1

of course if I got Hendo/Cabaye/Chadli and from the off I can go up to say, Butland

Hennessey is 4.0 right? So him and one of the mentioned above instead of Ruddy, so you can have Bassong. You'll thank me when he nicks in them corners and free-kicks 😉

Jonty is a big fan of Ruddy, as am I. He could massively benefit from the changes in BPS

something random that occured to me today after re-reading Ludo's post on keepers

It really does beggar belief that Forster made Team of the Season

Clyne and Berty, fair enough but Forster? Didn't get a lot of saves so it seems he's in there purely because of clean sheets

As FPL picks go Flappy, Heaton, Panti would all have been better for FPL than Forster

      Lol Whittaker
Redmond as a 4th mid is risky. You could downgrade Silva to Yaya or Sterling and upgrade Redmond. Or find .5 somewhere and upgrade Redmond to Ritchie (BOU)

my thinking is that Chelsea aside, Citys fixtures are nice, i really like the look of Arsenal and their fixtures. United have decent fixtures but untilwe see how Van Gaal sets them out I am going to sit on the sidelines and although Chelsea players seem a must I think they have three tricky fixtures in their first six so again I'll wait to see how that pans out

Guessing the Watford starting line up for 8 August remains tricky due to getting a new coach who prefers a different formation to last year's 3-5-2..plus the fact about 10 new players will have joined!

Deeney's club captain and our talisman, and has scored 20+ goals for 3 consecutive seasons, so it's highly improbable he won't start up top.

Abdi would be favourite for the number 10 role, playing behind him. There's talk of a winger being signed to play on one flank, but Ighalo must surely have a chance of being picked in the 3 'second strikers' roles. He was on fire last season, on fire this pre-season and has top level experience in Italy and Spain so he's no novice.

        Yes I think he will.

There was talk of Pudil going to Brighton but he's on the pre-season tour I guess so Flores can have a look at him. Holebas I'm sure will be the regular left back this season, but he's a week behind the other players on fitness. Ditto Nyom at right-back.

Which teams do you think will see a rise/fall in clean sheets this season?

    Last year's figures:

    CHE - 17
    WBA - 16
    SOT - 15
    LIV - 14
    MCI - 14
    ARS - 13
    SUN - 13
    SWA - 13
    MUN - 11
    AVL - 10
    EVE - 10
    LEI - 10
    STO - 9
    TOT - 9
    WHM - 9
    NEW - 8
    CPL - 7

There's certainly an argument that both Southampton and West Ham may find it tougher sledding this season; both have Europa League commitments, and Southampton have had some turnover in their defensive players.

By the opposite token, Everton might tighten up this season without Europa League, and in previous seasons they've certainly been more resilient than they were last season.

If United add another CB, and with Schneiderlin in front of the back four, I can envisage them adding another clean sheet or two to last year's tally.

I had envisaged Leicester kicking on this season and perhaps continuing their defensive form from the end of last season, though the appointment of Tinkerman perhaps jeopardises that somewhat.

    What are your thoughts?

    Hi everyone,

I was just wondering what folk think about Defoe??

5.5 million, proven track record in the Premier League and Sunderland have some decent early fixtures plus will be looking to build on last seasons late improvement.

He's a least a viable alternative to Deeney or Wilson.

He is a good alternative, but BOU have better fixtures while Deeney is on free kicks I've heard, so I'm going with one of those two. But Defoe could be a differential

Even all. I'd really appreciate any views on this draft. Hoping I'm getting close

    Ruddy (Hennessy)
hoping Hennessy gets move to WBA so may get game time at 4m

Darmian - Mings - Azpilicueta (Jenkinson / Targett) Darmian and Azpi starters. Mings / Jenks to rotate with nice looking fixtures for first few weeks to take me up to WC

Hazard / Henderson / Ritchie / Cazorla (Anya) Anya only a filler. Will look at options if he doesn't get game time

Deeney / Costa / Rooney - Costa for GW1 only 2m ITB for Aguero.
Planning on monitoring options at 8/9m (Tekkers/Lukaku/Giroud, etc to bolster elsewhere when WC is played - GW 9/10)

    Thanks guys, appreciate your help.

People what's your take on Miller?
Now that Sterling is out, Miller would be having a lot of involvement in attack and by far he is one the most energetic players in premier league as of now.

    People's thoughts on Walcott?

I know he's nailed to start GW1, but what happens with Alexis back in the side?

    Giroud Wally Santi Ramsey Ozil.

With Alexis back, one of these 5 will be benched every game, who misses out?

Wally has a lot of upside if he gets pitch time, but will he start every game?

He's not nailed to start GW 1 at all imo - I think he will but nailed is far from the truth. It's a big wait and see through pre-season for me. Out of those though I'd imagine Walcott is the one who misses out.

Didn't realise Arsenal had no other players, you know these chaps called Wilshere and Chamberlain.

No need to talk in absolutes, especially when you cannot be absolutely certain or even close to that considering no pre season or any other things (transfers) have happened yet.

I want to make a slightly controversial suggestion. To me, it seems that with the new BPS rules, the advantage of having a good keeper or two is greater than having a good home and away rotation. With the new BPS system, keepers who make plenty of saves AND keep some clean sheets should do well. And these keepers most likely will be getting a lot more bonus points this year. This means there should be better value in the mid-range teams who let in fewer goals, rather than the busy shot stoppers at bottom teams (Leicester, Bournemouth, Watford, and Norwich, most likely) I'm expecting that keepers from teams like Southampton, Stoke, West Ham, Aston Villa, Newcastle, West Brom, or Everton will do well this year. Of particular note, Stoke, Aston Villa, Newcastle, and West Brom all have starting keepers at £4.5.

In short, I'm anticipating that picking two of Butland, Guzan, Krul, or Myhill will be the best-value keeper options this year. I'm not expecting that rotation of bottom-ranked keepers or sticking with one of Courtois or de Gea for every match will do nearly as well. Thoughts?

I'm currently on Schmeichel and Speroni. Like your thoughts but Newcastle defense was horrible last year, and West Brom saw a fall off in form towards the end as I recall. Villa also wasn't hot.

Leicester was strong defensively at the end, and I'm punting on Speroni

Depay or Mata depending on preseason form. Ritchie is in there purely for value.
Giroud to Ozil would allow me to upgrade Ritchie to a 6.5m striker. 7 max if I make a defensive change. Gomis?

Anyone looking for a really cheap 3rd striker should look no further that Ighalo (5.0). Scored for fun last year and he's continued that form into pre-season, 2 already today. Chance of rotation but like last year looking somewhat undroppable.
