The Digest – Gameweek 3

Our final look back at Gameweek 3 assesses Bournemouth’s hat-trick hero, City’s perfect combination of form and fixtures, and the growing competition for our attention in the Chelsea midfield…

The Player

Callum Wilson’s clinically taken hat-trick at Upton Park earned Bournemouth their first ever win in the Premier league and has sparked a major bandwagon across the Fantasy games.

With many wildcards being wielded, the Cherries lone frontman picked the perfect time to announce himself as a value candidate for our three-man frontlines, with over 166,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers snapping up his services. As Fantasy managers search for this year’s Charlie Austin, who scored 18 times for promoted QPR last term, Wilson has subsequently risen from 5.4 to his original 5.5 starting price.

Delving into the data further, Wilson’s displays suggest he’s a viable option both home and away. Thanks to his weekend showing, the Bournemouth frontman has now scored more away goals than any other player in the top four tiers since the start of last season (15), with Eddie Howe’s team tailor-made to utilise his pace and movement on the counter. The Cherries, meanwhile, have won 17 penalties since the start of last season – three more than any other club in the top four leagues.

With the Upton Park result handing them a major morale boost, Bournemouth can approach their upcoming fixtures with renewed confidence. Eddie Howe’s side racked up 98 goals on their way to winning the Championship last season and with the likes of Simon Francis, Matt Ritchie and Max Gradel all supplying the creativity, Wilson’s growing band of owners have every reason for optimism ahead of four very strong showdowns in the next five (LEI, nor, SUN, WAT).

The Team

After three rounds of fixtures, Manchester City look in ominous form after a 2-0 win at Everton continued their 100% start to the season.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men sit at the top of the table, with nine goals scored and a trio of clean sheets accrued, and with an outstanding schedule to follow, many Fantasy managers are scrambling to load up on their main men.

Up next for the Etihad side are four home matches (WAT, WHM, NEW, BOU) allied with trips to Palace and Spurs in the next six Gameweeks which should allow Sergio Aguero the chance to run riot as a captaincy option.

Whilst few will be willing to go into that period without the Argentine on board, the battle is on for our attentions further back. Yaya Toure and David Silva look the chief midfield protagonists, though Raheem Sterling threw his hat in the ring with an assist at Goodison – for those who cannot stretch to Silva’s 10.1 price tag, Sterling is now just 0.1 more expensive than the Ivorian (8.9 to 8.8).

At the back, Aleksandar Kolarov’s 15-point haul against the Toffees moved the left-back to joint-second in the overall FPL standings along with team-mate Vincent Kompany. Although the Belgian is, overall, the more secure pick, Kolarov’s raids down the left and understanding with Sterling have proven a key weapon in the opening three outings. With Gael Clichy still building up his sharpness, there’s a growing belief that Pellegrini will tinker as little as possible as he looks to maintain momentum and move further away from the chasing pack.

The Talking Point

It took Pedro just 20 minutes to announce himself to Fantasy managers after opening the scoring in Chelsea’s 3-2 win at West Brom on Sunday afternoon.

By the time the final whistle went at the Hawthorns, the Spaniard had also bagged an assist and maximum bonus points, serving up a 13-point haul on his debut for the defending champions. Given that Eden Hazard has managed just eight points in his first three appearances, it’s easy to see why over 190,000 FPL managers have already snapped up his new team-mate.

Coming in at 9.5 to Hazard’s 11.5, Pedro offers an obvious alternative to the pricier Belgian as a route into Chelsea’s attack. Whilst there’s no questioning Hazard’s Fantasy potential – 14 goals and ten assists in each of the last two seasons says it all – Pedro’s acquisition perhaps indicates that the former Lille man may not be quite as “essential” in many managers’ eyes.

Whilst Hazard ultimately saw off the challenge of Cesc Fabregas as the prime Chelsea midfield pick last year, Pedro brings a far greater goal threat than his compatriot, having chalked up a 15.7% conversion rate in La Liga last term.

Certainly, the weekend showing has had an effect. Although he still sits in over 42% of FPL teams, Hazard has been sold by 404,000 FPL managers since the start of the season – over 110,000 more than any midfielder – and, along with Wayne Rooney, has been identified as the prime source of freeing up cash for our 15-man squads.

Whether Pedro can rival Hazard overall remains to be seen but with a 2.0 difference in cost, the Spaniard’s value for money is clearly set to play a part in how many assess the Chelsea attack from here on in.

In abit of a pickle. Want a City mid, but not sure which route to go

    A) Ozil Sakho > Silva Wilson

    B) Chadli Sakho > Yaya Wilson

Sorry you might have replied on previous page but don't think yaya or Silva will outscored Chadli or Ozil by 4?

Nope, Watford are relatively solid and I can see Arsenal and Tottenham scoring as many against Newcastle and Everton as City against Watford.

Fair enough. Feels very obvious and ominous - like when I ignored City against Norwich 2 season ago while everyone went city heavy!

Anyone else avoiding Arsenal for a while?

Not looking great at the back in these early stages, considering Liverpool, United and City defence costs less and statistically looks more sustainable.

Midfield is a minefield. Sanchez will do well, but his pricing tarnishes his points per million compared to others. Cazorla is playing deep, Ramsey has been unlucky, Ozil looks non-threatening, Ox and Walcott are bench fodder,

Giroud has looked dangerous at times but its the classical case of 8+ great chances for every goal he returns.

What the hell do I do now? I am far behind, and need to get pick my self up!

I have a decent team on paper IMO, but we've been awe full points wise
    Overall Points: 89
    Overall Rank: 2,880,865

    Team:
    Rudland
    Huth - Cedric - Jenkinson - Richards - Francis
    Yaya - Mahrez - Payet - Sanchez - Bentaleb
    Aguero - Kane - Pelle

Have 1FT, plan is to save and downgrade Pelle before tougher schedule an upgrade back line next week, which is a bit week and still waits for its first CS. If not WC during int. break. WC:in now does not feel essential though, even though there is some small thinks I would like to address, like the back line.

My team value is good, all "in form" players has been in the team since before their first raises, and have just have one price fall as of yet (Bentaleb)

But what the hell do I do to get back to the top, my goal of the season was to get a top 20k place. Which for me is a high goal. Got 80k playing "casual" last year (just watching games, no stats etc)

Do I need to take some good chances on captaining and/or players?
Do I just keep calm, play the fixtures and swap out players that as I loose faith in them and save my WC to later?
Am I deluded, my team isn't as good as I think WC now or just stop play this game?

You need to strengthen that defense. Liverpool, United, City all look very solid this season. Can get Gomez, Shaw and Kolarov at good prices. Downgrade one of your strikers to Wilson, Diouf or Gomis and you have enough to upgrade

Kone's fixtures are awful. When things don't go everton's way, you can always see martinez taking kone off first. Not a great option tbh. Darmian is playing well so there's no point losing Darmian for Sagna who will most likely play until Zabaleta comes back.

Cannot believe Lukaku is attracting so many people. Spurs, Chelsea and Swansea (away) are tough fixtures. Then they have the liverpool, United, Arsenal games to deal with.

At most he could get around 2 or 3 goals between those fixtures. He might even fire blanks in every game.

Right, so we all know the guy won't be getting minutes and his manager prefers a donkey upfront, and they still gave him a 9.0 price tag? How a player can be worth 9.0 when it's obvious he won't be first choice?

          • 12 Years

They obviously did not know. They have him a 9.0 price tag, possibly on the basis of Walcott signing a new contract..aka meaning he will be trusted for game time. Come GW1 it was all out the window.

This. Looks at his history in FPL. He's worth it. When he plays.

If he was priced at 7.5m and played every week he would break the game like Kane last year

I think initial prices should only consider the previous season's actual on-field production, not potential for playing time or points.

Totally agree. An over-hyped player and over-priced based on historical performance from years past. Prices should be based on the immediately prior year's performance, IMO (and is typically how I have seen player prices in other fantasy value-based games with a soft cap).

        • 11 Years
        9 years, 2 months ago

ppg can be as big a factor as total points because the risk of a player starting every game form a high ppg perspective can ruin the game by becoming immediately essential*.

        * See Kane, 2015.

I understand, but just disagree. PPG is not relevant for a fantasy game that is 38 weeks and has limited transfers. If you were playing for ONE week, then yes. I have never seen a fantasy game where initial player prices were calibrated based on reputation and not actual production (but I have also not seen every fantasy game, so my sample is limited).

Maybe because coming into the season he had scored a hattrick on the last day and in pre season he was playing up front. A midfielder playing striker made him 9 mil. Had he been a striker, his value would have been around 7.5mil.

I agree though. As a 9 mil player, he was way too overpriced. It's why I didn't go for him.

    guys,

Thoughts on improving the following team please:

    Cech
    Azpi – Kompany – Shaw
    Sanchez – Silva – Hoolahan – Mahrez
    Gomis – Aguero – Wilson

Subs: Hennesy, Oxford, S Taylor, Wanyama

    ITB = £2.7m, one FT

Was thinking of bringing in Clyne for Oxford but would like a good fourth MF and Coutinho is just out of reach, unless I sub in YYT for Silva? Also worried that no Chelsea in attack. Thanks

I personally would maybe keep Mata, i like your team with him in it.

If you must sell though, i would say Coutinho or Ritchie are your best choices.

Chadli i have but he is so hot and cold and annoying. Ozil isnt worth it as u have Sanchez. Payet, not a bad shout either but just not convinced with WHU yet. Barkley worst fixtures i've ever seen.

Is it wise, this early to take a 4 point hit to bring in Gomez, and get rid of Ward? I am always wary about taking too many hits on points especially this early on

Does anyone have a maximum point hit they would not be willing to go over?

The question is whether Gomez will play most of the season. If you think he wouldn't be replaced by moreno at some point in the season then he's a great buy any price under 5mil for sure. I just doubt he'll continue for the whole season.

Even if he is fit, what has he shown on the field that would give you confidence to retain? If I had him, I'd sell for someone more productive, and more reliably likely to play. Just me though...
