Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 6

Alexander Tettey became the first player to topple off the Suspension Tightrope this season, picking up his fifth yellow for a foul on Philippe Coutinho during Norwich’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Sunday. The Norwegian enforcer – who has amassed a card every 105 minutes this term – now misses the Canaries’ Capital One Cup Third Round match against West Brom on Wednesday, before returning next Gameweek for a trip to West Ham.

Prior to today’s match, Tettey tried to explain the series of combative displays which has now seen him collect a booking in five of the first six Gameweeks:

“If you look at the yellow cards, there is a reason. I don’t go out looking to pick up yellow cards. I have a role in the team and the manager has made it clear what he wants from me in that position. If it was up to me I would be having zero yellow cards. He has been helping me a lot since he came in, in terms of what I should do and always looking at how I play and giving me some advice. He played in my position so he knows exactly what I have to do.”

Elsewhere on the Gameweek 6 Tightrope, the likes of Joe Gomez, Fernandinho, Sebastien Bassong, Erik Dier, Ciaran Clark, Matteo Darmian and Eliaquim Mangala remain on three yellows, having escaped the referee’s wrath in this round of fixtures.

There are six new additions at the three-yellow mark, though, with Jeffrey Schlupp, James Milner, Jack Colback, Andre Ayew, Sebastian Coates and Billy Jones bolstering the ranks after this weekend’s matches.

Turning our attention to the newly-suspended players, Arsenal duo Gabriel and Santi Cazorla were both dismissed during their 2-0 loss to Chelsea on Saturday. The former received a straight red for kicking Diego Costa, meaning he’ll sit out the Gunners’ midweek League Cup clash against Tottenham Hotspur and two league ties (lei, MUN), before making a potential return in Gameweek 9 for a trip to Watford. Cazorla, meanwhile, was sent off for two bookable offences and is set to miss the midweek cup derby with Spurs. This means he will be back in contention for Saturday’s road encounter at Leicester.

Kevin Mirallas was brought on in the dying embers of Everton’s 0-0 draw against Swansea but still found time to earn a straight red for a studs-up challenge on Swans player Modou Barrow. Nonetheless, Toffees boss Roberto Martinez is weighing up the possibility of launching an appeal to the FA:

“I always tell my subs to come on with real intensity so I was pleased with Kevin’s manner. I felt he was more like a striker trying to defend himself and maybe putting in a defensive challenge which looked worse than it actually was. I haven’t seen it in detail but sometimes you need to show a little more common sense and I felt that he clearly didn’t have the intention to hurt the Swansea player. It was more Kevin being fired up trying to get the tempo of the game and trying to help the team. I’m disappointed with the action but not with his manner. I haven’t seen it again but we’ll look at it and if there are grounds for an appeal we’ll look at it.”

Although he received just a yellow during the Blues’ meeting with Arsenal, Diego Costa may yet face retrospective action if referee Mike Dean confirms he failed to see any potential incidents involving the Chelsea striker and Laurent Koscielny on Saturday lunchtime. The FA are studying the whistler’s match report and are expected to announce their verdict tomorrow.

Arsene Wenger is certainly adamant that the Spain international should be punished with what would amount to a three-match ban:

“I don’t want to judge Mike Dean overall but in this game it was surprising that Costa got away with what he did. You go into half-time with a red card and he stays on the pitch.”

Moving onto the players that are currently serving out bans, Valon Behrami still has two league fixtures (CRY, bou) left on his three-match suspension, while Charlie Adam and Aleksandar Mitrovic serve the last of three-match bans in the Capital One Cup.

Adam will skip Stoke’s road tie against Fulham in midweek, meaning he will be available for the Gameweek 7 home clash against Bournemouth. Similarly, Mitrovic will be available for Newcastle’s home clash against Chelsea in Gameweek 7 as we will miss Sheffield Wednesday’s visit on Wednesday.

Potters boss Mark Hughes can also call upon Ibrahim Afellay’s services for their home match-up against Bournemouth next weekend, given that the Dutch winger sat out the second match of his two-game ban this Gameweek. Watford defender Miguel Britos is back in contention for the home clash against Palace after serving out a suspension for violent conduct.

All I ask is that I don't need to make any transfers in my front 8 after this GW so I can fix my defence a bit.
Gomez, Richards and Ogbonna.. I'm looking at you.

      Pros:
      Low ownership
Scored healthily in the last 2 weeks
      Low price
      Sunderland next up

      Cons:
Plays in a weak attacking side, who are near the bottom of the table with regards to shots on goal
Conversion rate in incredibly high, which suggests it may not be maintained
Shots on target are low, and other stats are weak when compared to other strikers.
      Poor fixtures after Sunderland

Is there ever a good time to use a FT on a GK? FTs are best used to make changes in attack and i'm been trying to find one for Schmeichel to Begovic but to no avail.. Honestly think a hit is the best way to take care of this situation. Begovic should outscore Schmeichel + 4 over the next 6+ games and maybe the earlier the hit is taken the better to make sure he gets enough games to outscore him. Or is that just faulty logic?

For eg i've got Muniesa/Targett/Shelvey to worry about over the next 3 weeks. not to mention drops in form of attackers/injuries. By the time i do get a FT it'll probably be 3 weeks down the line and even then it'll probably be a waste. Begovic could pay back the hit this week vs Newcastle tbh(Schmeichel vs ARS) and will defo pay it back over the 3 following weeks where Schmeichel plays nor/SOT/cpl(or something like that)

    4. Shifty

The Martial bandwagon has bought up an interesting debate on stats vs feel.

The stats say that Martial isnt having that many touches in the box, he has scored with virtually every shot, unsustainable over time.

Watching the game tells you that whatever DNA all quality strikers need, Martial has it.

Those that are avoiding him please do it because he is only a kid and not nailed on yet plus man u have tricky fixtures on the horizon.
Those that have picked him I hope you have seen him play because this is going to be an enjoyable ride

he is a good, albeit risky, pick.

I prefer Ighalo currently because he has form, fixtures and is the main man at Watford and everything seems to be going through him.

Martial is young and could easily be rested and who knows if LVG will try Rooney up top again.

plus Ighalo is a hell of a lot cheaper

United fan and watched every minute of his game time so far. No doubt he has the talent in the box and I'm very excited as a United fan whenever he gets the ball in the box.

However, from an FPL perspective, i'm not sold yet but I see the potential - price, price rises only natural striker since Rooney is rubbish. But tricky fixtures and at the same price as Pelle who is nailed on, big experienced striker for an attacking team? Hmm...

Morning lads! Thoughts on this team are appreciated!

    Butland McCarthy
    Kolarov Azpi Francis Richards Gomez
    Sanchez Silva Coutinho Maherz Westwood
    Augero Diouf Wilson
    1.4 itb , 2 FT

I think my priority would be to ship off Gomez and Diouf, get some WBA defense but I really want some Chelsea attacking cover too!

    Worth doing:
    Gomez - Silva - Diof --> Dawson - Hazard - Vardy (-4) ??

Also who would be a better replacement for Diouf? Vardy, Ighalo or Sakho?

he was rubbish. snatching at shots, losing his footing, misplacing passes, getting dispossessed.

but probably still captaining 😆 more for the supporting cast's form than his own.

Sanchez is the other obvious option but something isn't quite right at Arsenal.

Everybody keeps saying Martial is a gamble he is unproven .. Blah Blah Blah.

Get him in now or miss out. He is absolute class and will give you a perfect 3rd striker. I can see him getting another brace against Sunderland. His confidence will only grow and has already showed pieces of brilliance. I really do think he is a gem at that price

For 8.0 - Martial was worth the gamble.

If it turns out he doesn't get much time over next 1-2 GWs, he's more than capable of raising to 8.3 and netting you a return. If not, he's a bargain striker.

He certainly has the potential but getting a brace needs chances created by players around him. Its not always like you get two lucky chances and u nail both. United not creating chances even against avg defences.
U will know if u watched first 35 minutes against southampton. It was like losing 2/3-0 and not getting even one goal.

I actually went for him. Not because he's such a good option, but because there is a severe lack of good striker options right now. You've either got form or fixtures, no striker has both at the moment IMO.

Martial on form, Aguero not. Martial has an easier fixture compared to Tottenham. Despite history, I still reckon Martial will score.
