The Numbers Game – 2015/16 Review – Klopp’s Liverpool

Our series of members’ articles, which review the statistics behind the previous season, now focuses on Liverpool.

First up, we cast an eye over the Reds’ team statistics under new manager Jurgen Klopp and compare them to the rest of Premier League over his period in charge, before delving into the data to assess their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources as we look to gain insight on their prospects for the upcoming campaign.

After steering Liverpool to sixth spot in 2014/15, Brendan Rodgers lasted just eight matches of the following season before parting company with the Merseyside club. The Reds had started brightly enough, winning both their opening fixtures before a run of one victory in the subsequent six – at home to Villa – saw the Irishman replaced by Jurgen Klopp at the helm.

The Reds’ progress to both the Capital One Cup and Europa League finals ultimately proved fruitless and with the German keen to rotate, Liverpool could only manage an eighth-place finish, ending the campaign 21 points behind champions Leicester.

As much as I respect arsene wenger I think last year was their best opportunity and it has come and gone. Think they have been overtaken by enough teams to miss out on CL altogether.

On Leicester they've had their miracle season and should enjoy the CL and probs a top 10 place.

It's been open before the Euros ended. Too bad it isn't available in Asia so I don't really know what it's like. But the original FPL is said to be opening on Monday (Says that on the website).

Well guys, after a disastrous 2015/16 season (finished just inside 500k..) I did a Granville and took a step back about March time.

Yes I lurked, I still played the game, but it brought me little joy.

Even when the Euro's came around I had little appetite to play - it felt like I was just inviting prolonged punishment.

I was used to top 5k finishes, and last season's anomaly really shook my confidence.

Anyway, after the summer off, like Mourinho and Man Utd's last 3 years, I've decided to forget about it and start again.

Membership renewed, confidence shaken but I'm ready for a new season, a new challenge, and better GW's ahead.

    God help me. 🙂

      I had a similar season a few years ago. 250k I think.

You learn a lot from these disasters. Makes you take a step back and work out what you were doing wrong. I realised I was focussing too much on fixtures at that stage but I'm sure it is different for everyone.

My main mistakes was reckless transfer risks and captain choices to try and claw back my poor start, which led to further needless -4 hits...

Prime example, bringing in Sturridge early only for him to get injured before playing the next game... Twice!!

Sometimes a bad start can snowball into a catastrophe especially if you start chasing. Just remember what got you all the top 5k finishes and jump back on the wagon.

Well... At least Pokemon has brought some beautiful nostalgia to what seems like a never ending wait for this FPL to open.

Those Liverpool stats are interesting. Defensively the stats look good, it seemed last year that so many individual errors lead to goals. Hopefully that won't happen again.

All conjecture and I swore to myself I would not post on the subject. But:
EA Sports who design the game software engine will have had to toil way to get things right in a new format. I personally think their games are good but their software crap.
Also with the Euro fantasy League being a clone of FPL the staff employed to run it were tied up and only coming back now.
It would not surprise me if the game was launched late next week.

If Stones goes he won't be missed.
Lukaku will probably stay because his value is higher than his ability.
Barkley has to kick on but Ronald will sort him out.
They have great youngsters coming through but he can't blood them all.
A poor defense meant the difference between 12th and 6th last year.
Ronald will organize the defense with a new centre back coming in.
I think he will try for Fraser Forster which was their sing biggest weakness last year.
In conclusion, there will be big improvements but not as quick as some will like.
Moshiri's money may not have the impact expected as all clubs have money to burn.
        Koeman's pull is the key!

            As FPL candidates?
Funes Mori the best buy for Everton since Stones. Good to put on watchlist. Depends on gametime.
Delofeu flatters to deceive and needs to contribute to the team. In and out!
Baines getting older but there are players in the wings. Downward slide I think without good left midfield cover.
Coleman will be even better this year and was another class cheap signing.
Miralles one to watch. Will be used like Tadic at Soton.
            Wathch for Galloway and Browning.

      About Everton...

Maybe you are setting too much store by Koeman?

At Southampton he took over Pocchettino's team that had already done very well the previous season. He may find Everton a harder nut to crack.

In addition, his supposed "pulling power" isn't that great, he had a poor record at Valencia apart from the one cup win and was sacked with them in 15th place in La Liga. His record with Feyenoord was also very patchy, he never got them as far as the CL group stage, never won the Eredivisie and they often failed to make even the EL group stage. For Feyenoord that is pretty awful (although they had financial problems when he first took over, which moderated expectations). In fact, Koeman's managerial record is pretty poor overall.

I don't think he's the saviour that many Everton fans expect and I don't think the prospects of Everton players for FPL purposes will be much improved by his being there. With the one exception that they will probably keep more clean sheets under Koeman than under Martinez. But that isn't exactly saying much. 😕

I certainly don't think he is our savior and I don't think he has a difficult job getting Everton back on track. He may have taken over from Poch but Poch took over a team coming right orchestrated by the old manager. He did keep them good with a pretty heavy exodus of players.
I believe him to be more pragmatic than Martinez and a better understanding of defensive coaching.
My post may look a little biased towards him and that was not intended.
It is a wait and see but I am optimistic about Everton's future based on:
        Money available.
        Koeman's pragmatism.
        The youngsters coming through.
The so called Everton stars leaving won't be missed as much as people think.
Anyway all is wait and see.

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 9 Years

Yeah, he did deal well with the big exodus from Southampton. Your comments comparing him with Martinez are also exactly right.

I guess I have seen a general assumption being made that Koeman will make a big and immediate impact at Everton. I am questioning that more than anything else. For FPL purposes I will probably start without any Everton players I think.

If Stones goes which he probably will, then Funes Mori will probably be nailed. It is sad to say but he was the most effective player for Everton in attack the last half of the season. He will be the only player I will consider as an FPL candidate.
ATM they are all "watchlist" players.

In South Africa, the depreciating Rand and a certain part of society becoming surplus to needs, we have to work until we die. Cheap haircuts and bus passes are not so much of a blessing in these parts.

Chances of an article on how to start well In FPL by a proven player? Chances of it going to plan? In all the years I've played I hate the beginning.

Good call. TL's strategy seems to be high-owned players, not too many new player punts, cheap defense but with one or two of the lower-priced starters from the top teams. And it usually works - although TL himself had a difficult start last year.

For me HoF means absolutely nothing, since i only had one full season playing (last season) and before that i started 2014 in GW 10 or GW 15 one of those two, think it was gw 10 and ended up in nosebleed territory which was a given.

So, yea HoF for me means nothing since i dont have the long history.

I'm not a proven player but I'll offer some 'take them or leave them' thoughts.

The key thing is to decide in advance when you will use the first wildcard. For me, that almost certainly means prior to GW4. That means my initial team is for 3 weeks only.

As a result of that I can do things initially that I wouldn't do later. Meaning I can build my initial team without worrying about squad structure, having 2 playing GKs and so on. I can ignore players late back to pre-season after the Euros or Copa, or those that have had injuries during pre-season. It makes the whole matter simpler.

For someone who uses the WC early (Money mostly) I think the defensive structure is superfluous also. No over worrying about rotations and goalkeepers. Good point.

I was always s believer in keeping it until the rule change,ie 1 before Xmas/1 after so I played it early last year and it paid off, I have no strategy on WC now but to see how it goes tho I feel it probably is best to use (the 1st one) it sooner rather than later.

Completely different to my approach Ruth. I never plan to use a wildcard (unless its been with me and i have to use it).

I see my wildcard as more of a fallback option. If things get really bad, i see it as my get out of jail free card.

          Isn't "really bad" "too late"?
Mind you, I never use my WC for the right reasons. Rather compulsive reasons.

No it isn't. I think i need about 6 transfers minimum to warrant a WC use.

Last year. Money ITB did not pay off so I understand your reasoning. Other years though it did. I finished in the top 1000 and had money to burn. I felt I played better in prior seasons but my ranking did not show this. People's propensity to save WC's and chips did not always bode well. I saved the TC only and my choices worked, though I put this down to luck.

        2. Ruth_NZ

Yep. Well I differ from some others on this.

For me, everything starts from strategy and 'shaping' the season. I play the FPL season in 3 parts. I know when I plan to use every chip before we get to GW1. I know when I will be more willing to take hits and when I will resist them hard.

I don't use the wildcard as a 'fallback' option as I have no intention to need a fallback. I plan to be successful, not to fail.

When one of the wildcards was confined to the winter transfer window there was a genuine decision to be made about the other one - use it early or save it till DGW season. Now you can do both (unless they change the rules again).

The benefits of an early wildcard are clear - building TV, adjustment in view of actual team selection (and positional selection) in the opening weeks, the ability to have a look at the foreign imports and how they are coping with the PL, the ability to see what new managers are doing differently with those teams and so on. This season, the international break after GW3 also coincides with the closing of the transfer window. It's the perfect time. And as it helps me to settle that in advance, so that I can build my initial team for 3 weeks only, I am perfectly happy to commit to it. 🙂

It's definitely a good tactic. Another reason the first WC could be useful later on in the season is if the weather affects fixtures and creates DGW's before xmas which has happened in the past and has done very well for me before. Past performance is no indication of future though!

I have a very similar view point to this, but I am actually going to stretch my WC to after GW4 this year. The City Vs United game I want to try and avoid so I am going to WC after that if I can!

      4. Pasqualinho
        • 15 Years

I try to avoid using it in the first four (not always successfully, mind). I would say that with 2 WCs you do need to use it soon after, though - I would say somewhere between GWs 6-12 is the optimum time. I think that 4 is too short to see any meaningful patterns and a couple of hits is all you need to get on the must-have players before they rise too much in value.

With last seasons change in WC that's not a bad tactic to use, it just feels high risk even though it probably isn't, it probably is advantageous. My team's never in too bad a shape that I really need to use it, it's more a comfort blanket than anything.

Keeping your options open is key – if you are looking to do x at y date, make sure you are in a position to do z if you need/have to. Key example of this was when to WC at the end of last season – most were forced into the GW33 WC as they hadn’t forward planned enough and then only had one real option, whereas those who planned had the option to either WC in 33 or 36 – the difference between the two tactics looked to be about equal, but because such a small percentage had the ability to wait until GW36, it turned out to be a massive differential and ended up paying dividends with how the DGWs panned out.

I think that would be fair enough. He's the potential to be excellent value but I'm not sure he should be given a "potential" value just to play safe.

I'd say Gradel and King should also around the 6.0 mark with Stanislas maybe cheaper. Ibe probably has the edge on those, however, given that we can presume he'll be handed regular starts.

Can we presume he will start to that's the million dollar question. Juan Manuel Iturbe arrived at Bournemouth with a bigger reputation than ibe sides now but hardly got a kick.

Not really, Iturbe did have a better reputation, but there's a whole lot of difference between how clubs look at the players they have loaned and how they look at the players they have bought.

You don't need to pay hefty sums for loaning a player, but you have to set aside a chunk for the transfer ins. That basically means that they trust the players that they have bought more than the loaned one.

I'm also planning to do an article about him in my new blog. http://www.fpldazzyblog.wordpress.com/
I will probably get him in because.
        - Rank will be lost if he succeeds due to high ownership
        - Its hard to transfer him in - may lead to unplanned wildcard or multiple points hits as well as buying him at a more expensive value.
        -Easy to transfer him out

Thoughts on starting with neither Mkhitaryan or Zlatan but having enough money in the bank to switch a cheap(ish) mid or cheap(ish) striker to one of them? Have two of each and swap one of these to one of the United players, depending which one starts well (if any).

    Rationale:
    - Hard to afford both (likely to be overpriced)
    - Loads of people will have both but if they start badly their price will go down, if they start well their price will go up
    - Gives you a better chance of getting the right cheap(ish) mids and fwds

    So, structure would be:
    GK / Def
    2x Premium mids 2x cheap(ish) mids 1x Budget mid
    Aguero 2x cheap(ish) fwds

    Cash in bank

        Zlatan doesn't do rotation 😉

With Utd's fixtures I'm having one of those to start with, plus a defender (probably Shaw).

My thinking is never plan to get players in, as other issues always pop up.

I'd say yes. I think both from Day 1 is overkill. Yes - they have the potential to be superb acquisitions but they also carry a high risk. With inflated initial ownership if they don't perform they will be shipped out in droves and we'll be forced to make a negative transfer to avoid the dreaded price drops.

Miki a must for me. Zlatan or Kun. 4 mids to play around with thereafter and 2 forwards.

Often an adjustment period for a player moving to a new league though - e.g. Firminio last season, countless other examples.

There are always a few that hit the ground running - Payet, Michu, etc but these are in the minority.

Only one winner in the Zlatan or Aguero debate.

This is the philosophy I have always used also. I made an exception with Payet last year but the pricing suited me. I think Miki will deliver no matter what. I think he is that good. Ibra at 35 and the price he is likely to be on puts me off. It will be a calculated punt but will depend on Mahrez Payet type player pricing.

Start of every season I go cheap on my defence, something like 5.5, 5, 4.5, 4.5, 4

Thing is it never seems to succeed, with bench players and 50min men ruining my start, and I WC by about GW5 to fix it.

Thinking this year I'll start with 2 6m+ and a solid 5m and then grab the sub 5m bargains when they appear. Thoughts?

Nice in theory but you'll find that as you tinker you'll be agonisingly close to getting an attacker that you want. And then guess where you'll end up cutting costs to afford him?

Tis true. Especially as all the 'known' attackers will be pricier this year.

Though after last season's debacle, I'm thinking whatever I did last year, I need to avoid this season..! 😉

Try two premium defenders that you can play week in week out and a three way rotation of the 4.5 defenders.

Yeah, maybe this is less risk averse, two premiums with 3 4.5's.

There was so much choice last year in the 4.5m range, so hoping for a repeat this term.

Defence is a lot of times about luck, there's often 4.0 and 4.5 players leading the way after 5-6 matches
Would say you need to make your own luck by only going for players you aware sure will start tho - you can always downgrade later

This is true - early doors in minileagues those who get the goalscoring defenders in from the relegation-threatened clubs are the ones who tend to lead the way.

        Yeah, this is it.

I want key starters who are prominent in their sides defence. I guess price is secondary to that, though they tend to cost more.

Are there any stats around on average gpg in gw1-3 compared to other weeks of the season?

My gut tells me its lower

I'm picking a team for the first two GW's, then WC'ing at start of GW3, to pick up the inform budget options and gain TV. It worked well when I was forced to do it, by a bad start last year.

Hopefully we will have two WC's like last year (early and late), the return of one WC for season, and one in January would change my thinking.

That is something I noticed last season. One, perhaps two, of premium defenders like Alder and Bellerin are well worth it.

So I am aiming at a start of:
      Cheap keeper rotation 8.5 - 9.0
      1/2 Premium Def
      2 Premium Mid
      2 Premium Fwd

All depending on pricing of course. A starting cheap backline has killed me the last two seasons.

      A 6.0 / 7.0 Defender completely outscores a 6.0 / 7.0 Mid - imho

Alders wasn't really premium last year. many were burnt by Chelsea. Bellerin is first on my Teamsheet though. A Man U defender will probably tickle my fancy. The rest Cheapies until I see a pattern. What I want more than anything is pricing to force limited premium picks.

Yeah, I think the pricing is going to be quite aggressive this year for some reason.

But therein lies the actual challenge, finding the "premiums" before they reach that status and the bargains that are gems, much like Boyd, Mahrez etc.
