Scout Report – Simone Zaza

Following injuries to Andy Carroll and Andre Ayew, West Ham manager Slaven Bilic strengthened his attacking options with the acquisition of Juventus striker Simone Zaza late last week. The Italian international joins on a season-long loan for an initial €5 million, with a view to a permanent transfer.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the 25-year-old is keen to improve over the next nine months after struggling to nail down a regular role with the Serie A side:

“I want to thank everyone for welcoming me including the fans and everyone at the club. I wanted to start a new experience and I feel this is the right choice for me… I want to become a better player and I know I can do that at West Ham. Unfortunately we could not qualify for the Europa League, but I am hoping I can help the club do that next season.”

The History

Born in Policoro, Italy, Zaza began his youth career at Stella Azzurra Bernalda and Valdera before being scouted by Serie A side Atalanta, whom he signed with at the age of 15.

He made his professional debut for Atalanta against Reggina in April 2009, but would only be granted two further league appearances for the club before joining Sampdoria in July 2010.

Zaza failed to establish himself at Sampdoria, though, and was sent out on loan three times over the following four seasons. He played four matches for Serie B outfit Juve Stabia in 2011/12, scoring one goal, before joining Viareggio, a third tier side, on loan during the second half of the 2011/12 campaign, where he netted 11 times in 18 matches.

The following season saw Zaza take in another loan spell, this time with Serie B side Ascoli, where he again impressed, scoring 18 goals and adding four assists from 36 appearances.

Having played just twice for Sampdoria over three years, Zaza moved to Sassuolo in the summer of 2013. He scored nine goals and registered two assists in 33 Serie A matches, and improved on that record the following campaign, totalling 11 goals and three assists in 31 matches.

Last summer, Zaza joined Juventus but struggled for pitch time with the Italian champions. Handed only five starts (and 14 sub appearances) he registered a respectable five goals and an assist in just 663 minutes.

Capped by Italy at Under 16, Under 17 and Under 19 levels, totalling six appearances, Zaza made his senior debut against Holland in September 2014. He featured three times for the Azzurri during Euro 2016 and has so far played 14 times for his country, scoring once and providing three assists.

The Prospects

Given the afore-mentioned injuries to Carroll and Ayew, it’s expected that Zaza will be West Ham’s first choice striker for the time being – ahead of Jonathan Calleri, Enner Valencia and Ashley Fletcher in the pecking order.

The Italian could be a little short of match fitness having failed to feature for Juve during their first two league matches, but he did register some minutes in pre-season, including an appearance against the Hammers, where he scored the winning goal in a 3-2 win for the Serie A champions.

It’s expected that the new boy will come in at 7.0 or 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and with the Hammers likely to be boosted by the return of the hugely influential Dimitri Payet after the international break, Zaza should be on the end of a decent supply line, which also includes the likes of Manuel Lanzini, Michail Antonio and Sofiane Feghouli, another who should return to full fitness over the next couple of weeks.

Zaza impressively averaged a goal attempt every 22.1 minutes last season, which was better than both Carroll (27.6) and Ayew (45.4), although the later did play on the right wing in the majority of his appearances whilst playing for Swansea.

The Italian is not really a target man, though, winning just 17 of his 35 aerial duels last season, relying instead on his clever movement and calmness in front of goal. Zaza isn’t blessed with exceptional pace, though, so it appears he will be heavily reliant on chances being created for him.

Bearing in mind that most Fantasy managers are currently holding Sergio Aguero and Zlatan Ibrahimovic up front, Zaza may well turn out to be a viable option in that crucial mid-price bracket if he can take advantage of some promising fixtures to follow. Obviously a potential ban for Aguero would force a reassessment.

West Ham are braced for four favourable home clashes (WAT, wba, SOT, MID, cpl, SUN) in the next six Gameweeks, promoting the appeal of an attack that found the net 65 times last term.

Although a fit-again Payet looks the Hammers’ likeliest source of returns, Zaza – if he can up his match sharpness over the international break – has the potential to hit the ground running.

If you’re eyeing up the West Ham options, Antonio – at 7.0 – is also one to monitor after taking his tally to two goals in as many matches with a weekend header away to City. The downside, however, is that the versatile former Forest man is just as likely to be fielded in defence, judging by Bilic’s team sheets, though a move to the attacking midfield three could yet see him emerge as one of the best mid-price options in the centre of the park.

Aguero will be back for the Swansea game(if banned which is now more likely).

If we are looking for replacements for Aguero we are looking at forwards who have best fixtures for gameweek 4 and 5. So, in my opinion it comes down to:

    A) Kane (sto,SUN)
    B) Lukaku (sun,MID)
    C) Benteke (mid, STO)
    D) Vardy (liv,BUR)
    E) Negredo (CPL,eve)

Among these, the first three have great fixtures after those 2 gameweeks also.
Hence, one of these three will be the one to have.

As I am on wildcard I am thinking of having Kane+Lukaku or Lukaku+Benteke along with Zlatan.

    What are your opinions?

For those wildcarding, rather than saving loads in the bank for Aguero's return, are you not considering bringing in Aguero for Ibra In GW 6? Then you could spend a week or two downgrading players to get Ibra back in.

Yes, that means you wouldn't have Ibra, but you'd still have Sanchez who is surely more than capable of matching Ibra's points return.

Yeh true, I just think that not owning Ibra instills far less fear as not owning Kun does. I reckon that E.g Lukaku and Sanchez could nicely match Ibra's (+ Firmino for me) output for a couple weeks.

    Just a thought;

FFS currently list Spurs and West Brom's pen takers as:

    Kane, Chadli
    Berahino, Lambert

If Chadli's arrival to WB finally sends Berahino out the other way, would this give Chadli a good chance of being the pen taker at WB considering Lambert doesn't see much game time these days?

On another note, could it also see Chadli being played in the number 10 role where I think Berahino has been playing behind Rondon?

If so, despite WB's lack of attack previously, a 6.4mil naturally attacking mid who is potentially on pens and possibly playing in the no. 10 role seems like a no brainer right?

At the opposite end, Berahino at 6.4mil at another team would definitely be straight in my side.

Two potential bargains to come imo.

    Thoughts?

On Chadli, I would not spend 6.4 (soon to be 6.5) on my fourth or fifth mid.
To have a West Brom attacker as your third mid is risky.
Anyway, worth a shout if he is on penalties.

      1. devils advocate
        • 10 Years

I agree a WB attacker isn't usually very appealing, but tbf Chadli is another level of quality compared to what WB have ever had previously, and he proved that fairly regularly at Spurs when injury and personal circumstances weren't interrupting his game time.

He's also the type of player who likes to create his own space and chances at goal, which is exactly why Pulis went for him imo.

It will be interesting to see how it unfolds, and considering their fixtures I am tempted to punt on him early.

I wouldn't pick Byram or Pieters. Unsure about clean sheets or attacking returns.
      Midfield looks splendid.

Are you planning to bring back Aguero ? By downgrading the midfield I assume. But then you might be stuck with Diomande and two low priced midfielders.

I like Byram's and Piters' fixtures.

Fair enough, my plan was to downgrade Firmino.

    Opinions please.

I have decided to promote Capoue to 4th mid in my team. With this in mind which is preferable long term

    A.
352 with Firmino and Diamonde 1st sub
    B.
343 with Benteke and a 4.5 mid (Fletcher?) 1st sub

      They both sound terrible.

Are you proposing to play one of Fletcher and Diomande every week? If that's the option, you play Diomande every week but still...

        No. You've misunderstood.

I'm playing Capoue every week. Either Fletcher or Diomande will be on the bench.

Then it's between 3-5-2 with Firminio or 3-4-3 with Benteke.

i have been contemplating the same thing with Capoue, playing him weekly.

i even liked the way he played last week against Arsenal, even though he blanked. it would
seem he has been given free reign to come forward, as opposed to being strictly a DM, as he
          has been in the past.

counting pre-season, he has 4 goals already. he is showing up regularly in the box.

playing him and leaving a 4.5 mid or Diomande on the bench are both very viable to me.

Thinking very much about Wild Card.

    Current Rank: 40k

    Heaton / Jakupovic

    Monreal / Shaw / Walker / Friend / Robertson

    Zaha / Hazard / Sanchez / Couthino / Leko

    Kun / Gray / Hernandez

    to

    Heaton / Jakupovic

    McAuley / Shaw / Collins / Friend / Kingsley

    Ozil / Hazard / Sanchez / Couthino / Sterling

    Negredo / Costa / Diomande

Doable, especially if Kun gets banned.

    Opinions?

At the risk of exposing my plans to the "casuals" is anyone having a look at Lanzini? No WH attack and something seems to be going on with Payet (maybe transfer coming?) for only 6.4 has stayed under the radar just playing a few minutes but those WH fixtures look so good and I think he can be a great asset, thoughts?

Why do you use the word casuals? What do you call yourself then?

agreed, there is definitely something going with Payet. I heard a rumor last week he was asking for a transfer and had gone on strike until it had been agreed, he has done this before at his old club apparently. But all the hammers fans i speak to say he's staying and that its just rumors. If he had actually got injured to warrant him not playing surely he wouldnt be in france training with the national squad.

Payet returned to training last week:

        http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/703297/West-Ham-Injuries-Andre-Ayew-Andy-Carroll-Slaven-Bilic-Dimitri-Payet-Premier-League-News

He didn't quite make it to be fit for the weekend, but there's almost a week from that to the first France match and 5 days more to their second one. Of course he joins the NT, and of course he will be fit to start at least the latter match. And it will be good for Hammers as he can get some minutes under his belt and build match fitness.

Do we think mahrez will drop tonight? on -83.8 on fplstats so might have to do the trade for Ozil before the international games.
