Scout Notes – FA Cup – Tuesday

Burnley continue their fine home record while Palace come from behind to avoid a shock against Bolton as the FA Cup third round replays go to form.

Burnley 2 Sunderland 0

Burnley eased past Sunderland and into the fourth round of the FA Cup in a match both sides could have been forgiven for wanting to lose.

Clarets’ boss Sean Dyche made seven changes to the team that beat Southampton on Saturday, with only midfield trio George Boyd (5.1), Steven Defour (5.7) and Jeff Hendrick (5.4), together with defender Michael Keane (4.9), retaining their places.

Sunderland, by contrast, fielded a side much closer to their first XI, with the benching of the 29.3%-owned Jermain Defoe (7.9) the main decision by David Moyes, who also brought in Billy Jones (4.4) and George Honeyman (4.5) as his only other changes from the weekend. Jack Rodwell was their latest injury casualty, ruled out with a knee problem sustained in the defeat to Stoke City.

The goals came from Sam Vokes (5.9), assisted by defender Tendayi Darikwa (4.2), and substitute Andre Gray (6.2), who was set up by Boyd.

Gray, a 5.3%-owned Fantasy asset, had not scored in two league matches, but now has five goals from his last six fixtures in all competitions.

Defoe was brought on in the second half, but was ill-served by a side that managed just two attempts on goal.

Post-match, Moyes rued his squad’s lack of depth.

“I’m really disappointed because we are threadbare at the moment. There were some positives – George (Honeyman) played well for us tonight and we played with three at the back to see if we could stop Burnley bullying us a little bit defensively.”

A change of formation to a three-man backline does have the potential to allow another relatively popular Sunderland asset, the 4.4%-owned Patrick van Aanholt (5.0), a more attacking role.

But Defoe, who has scored four times in Sunderland’s current four-match winless run in the league, remains the Black Cats only real Fantasy attraction.

Burnley will now play Bristol City at Turf Moor on Saturday, January 28, before the Gameweek 23 visit of Leicester on the following Tuesday.

Burnley XI: Pope, Darikwa, Keane, Tarkowski, Flanagan, Kightly (Gray 77), Boyd (O’Neill 90), Barton, Defour, Hendrick, Vokes.
Subs not used: Robinson, Mee, Lowton, Ward, Jackson.

Sunderland XI: Mannone, Jones, Denayer, Djilobodji, van Aanholt, Manquillo, Larsson, Love (Defoe 63), Honeyman, Januzaj, Borini (Asoro 80).
Subs not used: Mika, O’Shea, E Robson, Embleton, T Robson.

Crystal Palace 2 Bolton Wanderers 1

Christian Benteke (7.4) came off the bench to score twice in 30 minutes and give Sam Allardyce his first win as Palace manager.

The 5.7%-owned Belgian hasn’t scored in the league since Gameweek 15 – the end of a purple patch during which he netted five times in as many matches – and has suffered a major decline in ownership and price as a result.

A return to form could reverse both those trends as Palace prepare for a vital run of fixtures involving Everton, Sunderland and Middlesbrough at home and trips to Bournemouth, Stoke City and West Brom.

Allardyce made seven changes to the team well beaten by West Ham at the weekend, but having talked up new signing Jeffrey Schlupp (4.8) pre-match, the former Leicester man was not eligible to make the squad.

Midfielder Sullay Kaikai (4.5) was given his first ever Eagles start, while Joel Ward (4.8), Damien Delaney (4.8), Andros Townsend (5.9) and Joe Ledley (4.4) were the only survivors from Saturday’s side.

Palace were on course for a loss before Allardyce chanced his arm with a triple substitution. Benteke responded by heading home a Mathieu Flamini (4.3) cross and then steered home the winner from a Townsend assist.

The manager didn’t dwell on the victory for long post-match, spending much of the time talking of the need to strengthen his squad.

“We are spreading our wings far and wide and hopefully in the next 48 hours, at least one of those targets will be saying yes, pass a medical and sign for us. It’s hard to say how many we’re looking for; we’ve had about five, six or even eight bids in for players across Europe and in this country, and we’ve only had one accepted, which is Jeffrey Schlupp.”

The Eagles’ immediate schedule is certainly demanding. The FA Cup victory means they’ll entertain Man City in the fourth round on Saturday, January 28 – three days before they travel to Bournemouth for Gameweek 23.

City will have the benefit of an extra day off before their trip to West Ham on the Wednesday evening.

Crystal Palace XI: Speroni, Ward, Kelly, Delaney (Tomkins 62), Fryers, Lee, Flamini, Ledley (Puncheon 63), Townsend, Kaikai, Remy (Benteke 62).
Subs not used: Hennessey, Phillips, Cabaye, Husin.

Not that it matters too much, but Jaku looks like the #1 for Hull:

    http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11714/10732806/hull-city-goalkeeper-allan-mcgregor-to-join-cardiff-city-on-loan

At 3.9 such a good enabler.

        In the article:

"Eldin Jakupovic is Silva's number one goalkeeper while McGregor's compatriot David Marshall is the number two option, after joining the Tigers in an £8m deal from Cardiff in the summer."

every time I have seen Jakupovic play he has been brilliant.

the opposite is true of Marshall.

The fact that it has taken this long is the surprise for me

Currently, have Rondon starting and Defoe on bench.

If Giroud is out den Sanchez for sure

    GTG?

    Cech
    Alonso // Azpilicueta // Baines
    Sanchez (c) // Hazard (vc) // Lallana // Phillips
    Ibrahimovic // Giroud // Benteke

Pickford // Evans // Pieters // de Roon

    0FT £0.4m ITB

Giroud is the big concern but ideally I'd transfer him out after his next two games (to Lukaku/Kane/Costa). Looking at Hazard to Alli/Erikson next week, partly to fund this/partly as an "upgrade". I would do something with Benteke if there is a better option worth a hit. Anything else that stands out or GTG?

As with me above, wait around for Giroud.

I think you're gtg tbh - only burn the -4 if AW says Gru is definitely out, and even then to think about it - I'm looking at the -4 to get Kane in should he be ruled out, but a lot of waiting to do first!!

Thanks, it's always a pain when someone has a minor injury and should be fine but you just don't know. Especially when the consequences are a complete rejig in formation for Arsenal. Without funds this week, difficult to see who I'd get for Giroud, unless I took the opportunity to dump Benteke (e.g. for Carroll, Crouch or Barnes) too and I'm not too sure that Benteke's run of form is much of an indicator one way or the other over their next few games.

Major Benching headache.... Current First Eleven -

    Heaton
    Baines, Daniels, Brunt
    Eriksen, Sanchez, Alli, Philips
    Giroud, Ibra, Defoe.

    Bench: Stanislas, Chambers and Rose.

I'm hoping Giroud is out...I've been toying with the AOA chip and benching Baines, and I've considered Stan in for Defoe. Any advice?

Leave it as is with Stan first on the bench. If Giroud plays big chance he scores, if not then Stan vs. Watford at home.

Hi there, would really appreciate people's thoughts on Benteke following his Brace last night.

Doubt that there are Many owners left (although shocked to see the current FPL OR leader still owns him!) but I have held him since GW 7 WC & would hate to ship him ahead of a potential turnaround in form)

Following is decline since Big Sam's arrival and his ZERO attempts vs West Ham I was all set to finally sell him this week (unless Giroud is declared injured). However, could Benteke's excellent upcoming fixtures combined with last nights brace now make him a promising differential! Alternatives in his price range armt great either...?

    Would you:
    A) keep Tekkers for next 3 (EVE,bou,SUN)
    B) switch to Rondon (SUN,mid,STO)
    C) switch to Carroll (mid,CITY,sou)
    D) switch to Defoe (wba,TOT,cpl)
    E) other suggestions ??

    Many thanks in advance

D is better long term, but I think Rondon has the edge short term. Would not keep him - worse option now than under Pardew and lost penalties possibly

Shame there is no clarity on the pen situation... If we knew Tekkers still had them that could edge it.

He is certainly a confidence player so hoping that last nights goals can kick start him.

Decision to keep may well be swayed by Girouds status... If ruled out Giroud > Rondon could be the way to go with a Tekkers upgrade after SUN game.

      Thanks all 🙂

Dat guy will be an impact sub in my opinion. Iwobi has been growing in confidence and is great on the ball.

Not sure Barraghan plays regardless of he's fit.

with the talent he has Memphis Depay should have lit this league up, he should have been priced at 10 or 11 m in fantasy after his debut season but instead focused all his energy into adding to his car collection letting everyone know about it on Instagram

Not sure he had much talent besides pace and decent physicality tbh. Doing well in Dutch league means little

I don't think this is another kezman. many ex dutch players, including Gullit, have said he has all the ability in the world.we saw glimpses of that in the Europa league other LVG where he had some worldy performances and he has done it for Holland.

his attitude, like a certain striker at West Brom who is also wasting his talent, stinks. simple as.

Seems so - Janssen showing none of the talent his results suggested in the Dutch league

Anyone tempted by Pedro (7.0) or Willian (7.2)?
    Chelsea are looking solid.

Willian has rotation risk. Go for pedro only if you dont get other options

if costa starts, one of them will be benched, thats the risk that comes with their cheap price tags

Pedro is getting plenty of game time recently.

    Hi all.
Toying with a 352 formation. Way behind in ML and maybe it's worth a try?? ..

Defoe to Crouch allows me to upgrade capoue to a 7.6 midfielder to join
    Alli,Philips,Sanchez,hazard .

    Front two of ibra ,Costa

    Maybe Antonio? Pedro? Barkley?

    Thoughts guys..?

Lallana stats really don't tell the whole story. Watching him play he is so dangerous and always in attacking positions getting forward etc. Always looks involved.

Perfect example of eye test vs stats.

Lallana is that type of player though, always puts a shift in and looks decent when you watch him. Has been like that in previous seasons. But his returns never seem to live up to it

Thoughts on playing Holgate (Crystal Palace) with Rose (Man City) as first sub?

Hoping Holgate plays a full 90 or nothing at all.

I see spurs winning against Man city, but maybe not a clean sheet.

    Thoughts???
