The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 34

We were braced for disappointment and, four matches in, the Gameweek has delivered just that.

While it would have been hopelessly optimistic to expect big returns from Saturday’s limited set of fixtures, it’s already clear that we may have to settle for consolidation, if not damage limitation, from Gameweek 34.

Middlesbrough have been quick to snatch the role of arch villains.

Brought in by 201,000+ FPL managers – second only to Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford for transfer traffic – we started the day wondering if striker Alvaro Negredo could possibly grasp hero status. Sadly, it seems we already have our answer.

In truth, Gaston Ramirez is perhaps the real culprit behind Boro and Negredo’s miserable afternoon. The Uruguayan’s needless back-to-back cautions reduced Steve Agnew’s to ten men having already fallen behind to an early Josh King goal at Bournemouth.

That hindered their toothless attack and meant that Negredo would again be starved of service. Agnew’s side mustered a pitiful five attempts on goal, with Negredo treated to two of those efforts.

Meanwhile, at the back, Ben Gibson – brought in by more than 118,000 FPL managers – marshalled a defence that capitulated to concede four goals and return zero points.

With both Hull City and Swansea City earning victory, the concern now is that Boro may be on the verge of giving up the ghost.

They will face Sunderland on Wednesday for their second Gameweek fixture in what has the makings of a dead rubber. The loser will sure be relegated, the victor, in all likelihood, will be accompanying them. A draw would be useless for both.

Optimists among us will be willing Agnew’s side to lift themselves – to bounce back from today’s damaging 4-0 reverse with a convincing performance with goals and a shutout.

However, we have to question just how much they have left in the tank. We didn’t neccersarily expect profit from the trip to the Vitality Stadium, but we could hardly have envisaged such a fruitless defeat.

Over 155,000 (3.5%) put the armband on Negredo, including 27 of the top 100 FPL managers – Rashford, with 20, was the next most popular armband option. That is a staggering statistic and evidence of just how a double Gameweek can turn heads and warp the decision-making of even the leading managers.

To be fair, today’s big single Gameweek asset fared little better.

Everton’s Romelu Lukaku started his clash with West Ham as the most captained – backed by 602,000+ (13.6%) of FPL managers.

No doubt buoyed by his record of nine goals in nine appearances against the Hammers, it was the Belgian’s statistic of just a single goal in his last seven away trips that proved a more worthy indicator of what was to come.

Luakaku mustered just a single blocked shot on goal as a dull London Stadium encounter passed by with a whimper. That was typical of a day of disappointment.

There’s still some way to go, but already the fears surrounding the fools gold of double Gameweek 34 have been realised. It remains to be seen if Rashford and Crystal Palace’s assets can change the outlook.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      They were rubbish. Friend should have had a red card. Ref went for his pocket and in a split second realised he had just booked him so didn't book him the 2nd time. Fabio putting I had lazy tackles and shouting at Pugh to get up after he knocked him over.

      They were demoralized last night. Not sure if they'll have the will to even try against Sunderland.

    I can't believe how much the comment "Borough have to score goals" was used as a justification to captain Negredo. That's just another way of saying they are shite and struggle to score

      Agree with this. Negredo didn't appeal to me in the slightest. Captaining and triple captaining was madness imo.

      Thats why I got one of their defenders, at least this year at points they have had a decent defence, and their stats before today weren't too bad. Easy to criticise Negredo pick in hindsight but generally even if one's optimistic you'd settle for 10-12 points

        I capped him too but I'm glad I don't have a Negredo in my team to worry about. Kaku is a head scratcher at the moment. GW37 fixture appeals though, not sure is it worth taking him out with so few options available.

          A frontline of Kane/Jesus/Gabbiadini would be pretty potent for GW37 provided the last 2 are fit and firing.

              Indeed, that's by no means a plan yet, more of a hope. If Gabbiadini starts again and plays well this week I'm getting on my wildcard.

          I guess my point is that there wasn't any reasoning that would be that justifiable for any captaincy decision with the big teams in the FA Cup and the teams with doubles in disarray or facing tough fixtures.

          "Lukaku always scores against West Ham" was the most common refrain I read on here all week, not exactly genius level logic itself.

      Yeah at thier best Boro are a solid defensive team (when thier defenders are fit)

    From the sound of things I was not the only one who got a few boro defenders.
    Mine were fabio and valdes so the damage was minimal.
    I fancy a tense low scoring derby v sunderland?

    I was stupid enough to get ibra before the European game. Mainly because I was considring getting Gibson for another hit.

    After Ibra was injured the Gibson plan was shelved

    Sigurdsson to come off the bench so is blessing in disguise.

    Am I the only one who captained Kane?

    Amazed at the amount of Negredo captainers!

    Even Ville Ronka did it

        He didn't travel. Doesn't mean he's not in the squad but i think mourinho needs him rested more for the City game than run him out for 90mins against Burnley and risk him

    Odds for 3rd relegation spot

    Swansea 8/15

    When do we think Jesus will be back in the starting line up?

    Looking for Ibra replacements - candidates being:

    A) Kane - the obvious move, but fixtures aren't the best

    B) Jesus - great fixtures for an attacking team & enables upgrades elsewhere (e.g. Haz), but there are fitness concerns

    C) Aguero - great fixtures for an attacking team but he's pricey and will he start with Jesus when fit?

    D) Gabbiadini - great fixtures & enables upgrades elsewhere (e.g. Haz)

        Yeah I know, it's definitely the obvious move. But with 3 TOT already and no cash in the bank, it limits my options. Plus the fixtures aren't the best:

    Last trade before WC. Just early thoughts.

    A) Carrol to King for free (Play 3-5-2 and bench Negredo)
    B) Negredo to Jesus / Gabbiadini for free
    C) Something else

    6.4itb, 1ft

    Jakupovic
    Alonso / Valencia / Stephens
    Firmino / Alli / Sigurdsson / Zaha
    Kane / Lukaku / Negredo

    Heaton / Davies / Maguire / T.Carrol

    Best looking moves here lads?

    A) Bavies & Ibra -> Yoshida & Kane
    B) Grant & Ibra -> Forster & Jesus/Gabbi (2.2/4.4 cash banked)
    C) Son & Ibra -> Tadic & Kane
    D) Grant, Bavies & Ibra -> Forster, Stephens & Kane (-4)

    Jaku
    Valencia, Stones, Brunt
    Sanchez, Eriksen, Son, King, Zaha
    Lukaku, Benteke

    Grant, Bavies, Robertson, Ibra

        Yeah, I think I'm between A) and C). Scary going without Kane and it's probably too soon for Jesus.

        Tadic has more upside than Yoshida - thoughts on C)? My 3 other defenders also have reasonable fixtures this week which helps.

          Actually C) is a much better option as you can't trust Son's gametime longterm, especially without WC.

          Just know with Tadic that he and Puel havven't been on the best of terms lately

    Although TBH, the above is unlikely to be the end result...

    Don't get the hate Negredo gets , seriously .
    The guy has scored 9 goals and given 4 assists for boro this season , for a team that can't score and has no quality whatsoever .
    They don't attack , have scored the fewest goals among all PL teams , 23 to be precise and make the football match boring for the viewers by hindering the other team from scoring as well .
    Middlesbrough with all due respect are pure S*** and Negredo deserves a bit more respect tbh .
