Fantasy Tour De France

The 104th edition of the Tour de France got into gear this weekend, which gives us another chance to take part in a summer Fantasy game.

For those playing the Velo Games Fantasy Cycling game there is a Fantasy Football Scout community league to take part in (league code – 776044417).

Here’s a quick reminder of the rules, team selection and some key cyclists to watch out for.

The Rules

Each player takes the role of a manager of a professional cycling team. The aim of the contest is to select the best possible team of nine riders, while operating within the conditions set on team selection. The better your racers perform during the three week event, the more points they will accumulate for your Fantasy squad.

Teams are given 100 credits to select their riders. credits are the games’ currency. Each rider is given a value in credits, based on their prospective points-scoring abilities.

However it is to be noted that there won’t be any further transfers available. So players are advised to choose their initial teams with a lot of care and precision.

Team Selection

Riders are split into four Rider Classes, which reflect their strengths, weaknesses and role within their team. These categories are All-Rounder, Climber, Sprinter and Unclassed Riders.

Each team must contain two All-Rounders, two Climbers, one Sprinter, three Unclassed Riders and one Wild Card. The Wild Card selection may be from any rider category, and allows a team manager to specialise somewhat in the team they pick.

The Route

Let us take a look at the important aspects of the route which plays a major role in deciding the results of a race.
This year’s race is expected to be more competitive and not favour any particular team. The race is 13 km shorter than the previous one and the climbs are much lesser than in 2016. A high number of steep mountain gradients are a part. The race started in Dusseldorf –  the first time in three decades that this contest has started in Germany.

Important stages

There are 21 stages in total during the course of the race. Some of the races which are expected to play an important role in deciding the fate of the race are Stage 5,8, 9, 12, 13, 17 and 20.

Prominent Players

There are a total of 22 teams and 198 players taking part in this year’s tour.
They can be classified using various parameters. I have prepared a list on the basis of past records, bookies odds and current form.

Favourites: Richie Porte, Chris Froome, and Nairo Quintana.

Dreams Can captain goalkeepers at will.

Good luck all those taking part. I'll promote on social media too to see if we can get more joining the league

I think the day is not far away when I'll be ousted from the site by all Premier league lovers. Sorry for the article in advance.

Considering you knocked it up in a few minutes [it seemed] AND on your birthday, I'm quite impressed actually.

Haha. I did finish it in 10 minutes. As for the birthday, it's not a big deal. I've celebrated one too many.

I don't suppose membership removes ads from the site does it? Would consider it for that alone...

Something to consider, or too much lost revenue?

Comparing with other sites, there are hardly any ads here. You can opt out of ad cookies if you want to.

Hmm, there are currently three on the main page. Right now each is animated and jumping around a fair bit. Sure there are sites with more, but it's distracting enough to comment.

Today is make or break for me. Sagan, Matthews, Van Avermaet and Gilbert are the favorites, and I own them all.

Good day for you today. It's a strange kinda middling sort of a stage that doesn't seem to quite know what it is.

I suspect the Sagan owners will have a field day whist the Sky choo choo will once again take no risks and just gently ease Thomas (and Froome) across the finish line.

Team Sky played a blinder yesterday. The Sky train simply parked itself behind the front half a dozen riders and controlled everything. More of the same today.

Just been to the woodyard and a couple of other errands and return to see The Sky train parked in exactly the same place. That first day really was a nightmare for the rest of the race.

If it means another Sky/Froome win I'm happy. Just wondering if the organisers haven't shot themselves in the foot, excitment wise, with the race layout and trying to derail sky ... the race hasn't really got going yet though.

Sagan delivered for you guys despite the shoe issue in the last meters. I'm concerned about the number of crashes so far. Bardet down again today. Already lost valverde. Wonder how many of the GC riders will make it to the mountain stages.

Yeah, just checking how many own Sagan ... an awful lot, so not made much of an inroad afterall. Got Bardet too so need him to make it the mountains more or less intact

Nasty crash. I doubt Sagan wanted to push Cavendish but that movement of the elbow looks ugly on slow motion. What a bloody Tour and we are only in the beginning.

That's big. David Millar was saying it was accidental on ITV - I'm more convinced by Brian Smith's assessment

      http://video.eurosport.co.uk/cycling/tour-de-france/2017/tour-de-france-2017-peter-sagan-has-made-a-huge-mistake-brian-smith_vid988885/video.shtml

I think he made a mistake and the original penalty was fair. Disqualification is a bit too much.

Very interesting point that Demare is part of the situation as well. Essentially Sagan was trying to go where Cavendish already was. Maybe the disqualification is for the best. This way there will be less pressure in the peloton. Imagine what the next sprint would have been like.

        1. Pasqualinho
          • 15 Years
          7 years, 4 months ago

Demare's a massive part of the equation, I think. A French Green Jersey winner would be nice for the organisers, wouldn't it? Or am I being a bit cynical?

I meant Sagan trying to get in Demare's air flow, where Cavendish already was. I think that's Brian Smith's point. I'll believe there is a green jersey conspiracy if somehow Kittel and Greipel don't finish the race as well 😀

Deeply flawed fantasy game without any transfers.

I lost Izzy on day one who looked good for a big ride in the wet of the first two days....along with those who lost Valverde...and now a huge number lose Sagan and a good number for a very doubtful Cavendish.

It's not losing the actual riders but the fact they can't be replaced that's already killing this game off.

    It's only day four.

I saw it but was too late.

Cycling should be perfect for a fantasy game with transfers when the stages change from day to day. So much to think about when flitting between a hilly/mountain/flat/TT stage.

And why are you sorry?...you didn't make the rules.

Do you not think that would make the game far to template? I mean everyone would be going for the likely lads of the stage profile?

I don't mind the format so much, played for a few years with velogames without a great deal of success. not sure how many people play but it's probably more casual friendly for that reason

Cycling is going soft. Of that elbow was twenty years ago he'd have got away sot free...I doubt it would even have been looked at.

Back then the rule was that you don't get yourself trapped against the fence or else you pretty much could expect to end up floored.

I saw that Sagan had been given a time deduction and thought that was it - only just learnt of the DQ, terrible decision.

It was a racing incident, and it could be argued that it was caused by Cavendish himself. I'm not sure it really matters but what Cav did to Tom Veelers in 2013 was much worse than that today and nothing was done about it.

Evertons fixtures look good. Keane could be a good pick at 5.5m for most fixtures. Should get maybe 14 cleanies and a few goals and assists.

    Finally a good days racing.

BMC having to take up glove thrown down by both the breakaway and the SKY train. The SKY train just sat behind them laughing....I suspect...

Yep, enjoying the racing...got a couple of days off. Things nicely set up for the climb ahead.

That peloton isn't hanging about today...but how the hell do they shake off SKY?

Sky are so strong ... I guess Porte has to make a move at some point but he could just be playing into Sky's hands. Gonna miss the exciting bit afterall ... leaving to pick up the daughter in a few minutes!

Porte going for the stage win and bonus seconds. Hope he succeeds and the gaps in GC get smaller.

BMC losing riders by the minute, SKY train still intact from what I can see. Porte may have to go with just a couple of helpers soon.

BMC have basically shot themselves in the foot today by just carrying everybody to the final climb.

Aru doing the business for me today, pity about Izzy not being there that stage would have been so good for him.

From the looks of it this won't be the last time we hear Aru's name this Tour. Seemed fresh.
About the new ppl in the game I think Jonty shared the league code on Twitter.

Far too good for everybody else. They're tactically better, as a group, than any team that has ever raced the tour IMO. Well at least within my time.

Very warm day today on the Tour. My guess is all the teams will resign themselves to a sprint finish.

SKY and especially BMC put a big shift in yesterday so I can't see any surprises coming from either of those.

    Kittel to win.

Haha....Three riders charge straight off and then wave to try and get some riders to join in....Nobody wanted to know.

      Silly arses.

    Hello everyone.
Great news for all of us who are playing the Tour De France fantasy game conducted by Velogames.

They have started a new game called King Of The Mountains. It is a completely new game and is not in any way related to the old game which we have been playing. I'm mentioning all the important aspects points wise:
    1. People who missed the deadline for the initial game (no transfers one) are welcome to join this one.
    2. We'll be having 12 transfers.
    3. There are certain deadlines though. They are Stages 8,9,12,13,15,17,18. Any transfers made by us before these stages will reduce the number of transfers available with us.
    4. We have to choose 9 riders as usual. In this game there is no restriction based on classifications of riders. So in short we can choose anyone we wish within the 100 credits budget.
    5. Deadline is tomorrow 8th July 12:00 PM Cest which is 11:00 am BST.
    6. There are some good prizes available for the winners. For any further clarity, please visit
    https://www.velogames.com/king-of-mountains-tdf/2017/rules.php.

    Hurry!

Back home from my night out...so a few thoughts for anybody not too familiar with cycling that may help one or two of us do ok at this.

    1. There are no extra (big) pts for the riders wearing the Yellow, Green, Polka dot or White jerseys at the end of any stage..it is simply who does well on the day.

    2. Chris Froome doesn't need to win a stage..as always it will be about energy management and he will be happy to roll in third or fourth and just concede a few seconds.

    3. Aru is Froome's biggest threat for the yellow jersey right now so the tactic may possibly be to just follow Aru up the mountains by SKY...for now...

    4. Thomas may be expected to become default back up plan to Froome for team Sky and as such become lead out man for Froome and a decent finish...

Just some thoughts from me whilst I ponder a team...

Cheers for that Wakey ...I've picked my bunch of mavericks so fingers crossed. There seems to be two ffs king of the mountain leagues listed on the site once you enter the team, which is a bit confusing [three leagues in all incl the original one]. One league only has four managers listed while the other appears to have most of the regulars there.

I've gone Froomeless again. The fly in the ointment is the number of downhill/flat finishes on these mountain stages (and why I picked Izzy before he crashed out)...Froome is a very good descender as well as a top climber.

I think the big GC guys are too expensive considering how lucrative the breakaways can be for KoM points. There should be some big and predictable breakaways once the GC gaps get bigger.

Thomas will be interesting at 14 though, he's improved his climbing lately but I think he'll be dropped from Froome's group before the finish.
