The ScoutCast – Episode 227 – Lift Off

An unprecedented summer podcast arrives following the Fantasy Premier League launch, as Jonty, Andy and Luke join me in the afterglow of a joyous day.

Technically “on the beach” and fighting back to full fitness, we nonetheless brave the airwaves to chime in on the price list, reclassified players and some early formation dancing.

We glory in the potential bargains, lament the overpriced and make bold claims on our lineups that will doubtless be reversed come August 11. If Andy has Chris Brunt in his Gameweek 1 squad, I’ll eat my Free Hit chip.

The FPL Draft game gets a rinsing, and we end the show with our proud declaration of our team ID’s. A conclusion that leaves me feeling rather inadequate even before a ball has been kicked.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Wednesday night. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

If you’re a traditional type, you can acquire the mp3 audio version via this link on the first player below, or take in the full visual experience via the second player below.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Crystal Palace getting active in the transfer market now. RLC seems a good option as (i) Chelsea would not loan him out if he was not going to get first team football, (ii) De Boer has sanctioned it so he is at least the new manager's signing.

For 4.5, I think you'll see him in piles of teams at the 5th mid - he's in Matamatics' squad, I'm still sticking with 3-5-2 but as the benched boy he seems a decent shout as there's a real dearth of 4.5s who are playing in the midfield slot.

has de Boer sanctioned it though? He's never had any dealing in transfers before.

I reckon he should get gametime but Chelsea have no say over whether their loanees get minutes. Plenty of them didn't last season.

I reckon he will expect his wingers to work hard tracking back. Which might be bad news for Townsend if not Zaha,

He was manager during a time when lots of flashy wingers were sold: El-Ghazi, Kishna, Fischer, Özbiliz, Sulejmani, Derk Boerrigter, Ebecilio

    Anyone considering 4-3-3

Surely 6m Luiz will deliver more points over the season than most budget mids. That Chelsea defence is fixture proof...

How does this look for a 4-3-3

    Foster
    Lindelof Trippier Luiz Cedric
    Ali Sane Phillips
    Kane Kaku Firmino

    Myhill RLC Carroll 4.0 defender

Concerned about no Arsenal attack but dunno how I can squeeze in there?

    1. Botman and Robben
      • 8 Years

Not a fan of 4-3-3. I don't trust Phillips too much so you might say you just have 2 mids.

    2. Andy_Social

Agree with your logic - I'm taking it further and going 5 at the back.

One way to get Arsenal in is upgrade Phillips to Ozil or Ramsey and downgrade Firmino, but you're prolly better as you are (as you'd end up with Rooney!!).

    3. McEwan

Maybe Luiz will over the season but you won't have that squad for the season so to justify it for a season is a non starter for me.

Personally don't see many being overly successful going 4 or 5 at the back longer than a 2 to 3 gw stretch so your immediately using transfers to move money out of defence isn't something I fancy

If Siggy left Swansea who would be on set pieces for them? (Not just penalties, but free kicks and corners). Think Tom Carroll took a few in the past so may be a good cheap option. With Ki injured and Cork potentially on the move Carroll likely to be a nailed starter.

      Cork has gone already.

I think they'd need to try to go and buy, but I'd be seriously worried about Swansea if Siggy goes - I feel like Narsingh was taking a corner or two?

      1. Andy_Social

Swans looking at Chalobah. Would that mean Chalobah and Carroll in midfield? Too weak. Or would they be competing for one spot? Chalobah plays a kind of Siggy role.

Yes. Am looking for the nailed 4.5m mids. Basically if playing 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 then who are the nailed starters who will score bench points if required.

At the moment I like RLC and Carroll. Only Crouch appeals as a forward who is 5.0m or less and he won't get many games IMO.

        1. Andy_Social

For nailed 4.5 mid we're all looking at RLC. Then Carroll. The other one is probably Oriel Romeu.

        2. shearer9

Romeu is a nailed starter, as Mesa will be for Swansea I reckon.

Romeu, Mesa, RLC and Carroll I think are the 4 choices. Nailed for 90 mins and 2/3 points - basically what you want

We don't know about RLC yet. The Swans midfield will get a serious makeover if Siggy goes, so that's an unknown too.

Morning all, back after a well deserved break!

    No 4.0 defender options?
No cheap third strikers worth bothering with?
    No Problem!

In what was supposedly the second best formation on the article the other day...
5-2-3 all the way 🙂 Gives this allocation:

    Foster (Myhill)
    6.0 / 5.5 / 5.5 / 5.5 / 5.0
    8.0 / 8.0 (3x 4.5 playing mids)
Lukaku / Kane / Lacazette (or Jesus)

    Try it... mine looks great!

    1. shearer9
      • 8 Years

If you're going to have 5 defenders, would you not want to invest in a 6.5 or at least one more 6? Also, who would you select for your 8.0 mids?

      1. Misery Loves Kompany
        • 10 Years
        7 years, 4 months ago

The only 6.5 I'd personally have at the moment would be Valencia, and I think Lindelöf is better value at 5.5. Bellerin is an option at 6.0 but I'll want to wait to see how Arsenal line up first. Back line is flexible and you could free up another 0.5 by putting a 5.0 West Brom defender in place of one of the 5.5s.

        Currently gone with:
        Kompany / Lindelöf / Trippier / Bertrand / Cedric
        Pogba / Pedro

Well, has to be a weakness somewhere, such is the game!

I don't think Pogba/Pedro is that weak though, both should be nailed on.

You could also skew it to a 9.0/7.0 pairing or 9.5/6.5 etc.

    Took out Matic+Rooney+Rangel for Allen+Deeney+Mee

Will go for my favorite 3-4-3 formation

Since I have Kane, is it wise to switch out Alli -> Mane

Or take out Kane for another prime striker and use cash to shore up elsewhere

    Foster
    Milner Yoshida Cedric
    Sane Pedro Alli Allen
    Deeney Kane Lukaku

The one thing which puts me off of 5-3-2 is the lack of ability to rotate, but then the starting players are so much stronger if you get the bench right (i.e. consistent starters)

Think you need a lot of nerve to do it, and you need to adapt to early trends without changing system or formation, if that makes sense.

        Considering it for sure.

Yeah, it's that 3rd striker slot I'm struggling with. Not many options jumping out at me currently. Think I'm going to start Firmino as they've got Palace & Watford, then I can drop him if a cheaper option starts bringing in returns.

First Draft 🙂 what do you think?

    Foster
    Cedric Ake Lindelof
    Pogba Tadic Alli Pedro
    Aguero Lukaku Defoe

    Myhill RLC Yedlin Rangle

It's a good 3-4-3, but I can see a stunning 4-3-3 if you use the Tadic funds wisely.

Not a fan of 4-3-3 and how long as 5-2-3 been an option? Is that new?

4 at the back looks fine as the tricky sub-7's seem to get better in defence. 5-2-3 doesn't work but 5-3-2 might.

One of my more intriguing 343 attempts:

    Forster (4.0)
    Kompany, Bailly, Cedric (4.5,4.0)
    Alli, Willian, Zaha, Tadic (TCarroll/RLC)
    Aguero, Lukaku, Defoe

Quite like it, even if slightly light in midfield, I think all of those will start, however.

Yeah, 17m on 3 starting defenders is probably eating too much cash. But aside from Valencia over Bailly these are my top defensive picks for the opening games.

I could switch it to 442 by downgrading Defoe and having a WBA defender, then use the spare cash on the midfield.

For those interested in Arsenal line-up, Emirates Cup is at the end of the month. They will play Benfica and Sevilla, and the powers that be have already stated that Lacazette will play if he is fit.
I'm 50/50 on whether or not I want the new striker in my team, and this event will sway my opinion.

    AGUERO

Are Fantasy football players pulling the plug on Aguero?
Is he still no1 striker for City or is that now Jesus?
    Will Pep play both?
His price has been reduced to 11.5m.
Brighton away 1st game if he starts you'd fancy him to score and be a good option to captain.
    What are your thoughts?

I, like many here, am a big fan of Siggy but I've got my doubts about him if he goes to Everton. Where he plays and fk's and pens is key to his output. With Rooney on the scene you'd expect him to at least lose pens and perhaps some fk's.
8.5 is too much I'm thinking.

Not sure about all the Firmino love. He has been playing as striker all season long last year, and he only scored 11 goals. Since he is categorized as forward this year his goals will be worth less and without all the CS points. Surely Defoe(assuming he is on pens) playing for a very attacking minded Bouremouth team will be a better 3rd striker choice?

Completely agree, it will only be the Liverpool fans that will get him in from the off, imo.

Agree about Firmino. He´s even ROOP this season, as he never really plays like a striker.
