Scout Report – Markus Suttner

Brighton and Hove Albion stepped up their summer recruitment drive with the signing of Austrian left-back Markus Suttner from German side FC Ingolstadt 04 for an undisclosed fee, believed to be worth £3.8 million.

The 30-year-old agreed a three-year deal, with Seagulls boss Chris Hughton delighted to secure the services of one of his long-term targets:

“Markus is someone we have been aware of for some time, and I am pleased we have managed to complete the transfer… He has a great level of experience internationally, and in the top divisions in both his native Austria and Germany, where he has played the last two seasons with Ingolstadt, and that experience will serve us well. He will add competition at the back on the left side of defence, and I’m now looking forward to working with him.”

The History

Suttner came through the ranks at Austria Vienna to make his professional debut in October 2008.

He quickly established himself as the first-choice left-back and enjoyed a successful seven-year spell, which included winning the Austrian Cup in 2009 and a league title in 2012/13.

The defender made 260 appearances in all competitions during his time with the club, registering nine goals and 35 assists.

Suttner made the move to Ingolstadt in the summer of 2015 and featured 18 times in the Bundesliga during the 2015/16 campaign, although he failed to produce any goals or assists.

But he enjoyed a far more successful campaign last season, personally at least, totalling four goals and five assists from 31 appearances despite Ingolstadt suffering relegation.

Suttner represented Austria at U19 and U20 levels, making seven appearances, before making his senior debut in a 3-1 friendly victory over Finland in February 2012.

He played 20 times for his country before announcing his international retirement earlier this year.

The Prospects

With Gaeten Bong and West Bromwich Albion loanee Sebastien Pocognoli job sharing at left-back position last season, the addition of the experienced Suttner looks a shrewd piece of business by Hughton.

The 30-year-old was part of the Ingolstadt side, alongside fellow summer arrival Pascal Gross, that managed to survive in their first season in the Bundesliga in 2015/16, eventually finishing 11th. Brighton will hope he can share some of those positive experiences over the next nine months.

Suttner’s strengths mainly lie in his attacking threat, with the Austrian a set-piece specialist, something he alluded to when joining the newly promoted side:

“Last season with Ingolstadt we played with a five-man defence. Now we will play with four in the defence so I think I can’t go forward as much, but when I am there I want to score or make a cross and I hope I can help with my set-pieces.”

He will certainly add to the potency of the Seagulls’ attack, although much will depend on how much freedom he is given by Hughton to push forward down the left flank and whether he can wrestle set-piece duties away from Anthony Knockaert.

Suttner is also a competent defender and is reasonably strong in the air for a full-back, standing at 5ft 10in tall.

Looking at his underlying statistics from last season, he averaged a shot every 63.65 minutes and produced a key pass every 51.64.

Those are very impressive statistics, bearing in mind that Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso averaged a goal attempt every 58.57 minutes and could only create a chance every 112.25 minutes last term.

In terms of Suttner’s bonus point potential, he averaged a clearance, block or interception (CBI) every 16.90 minutes amassing an impressive 92 interceptions.

While centre-back Lewis Dunk is expected to be a Bonus Points System (BPS) darling, having averaged a CBI every 7.73 minutes last season, Suttner’s numbers are reasonable for a full-back and, alongside his attacking threat, offer promise regarding his Fantasy potential.

Despite Suttner’s production last term, he arrived in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) on Monday priced at £4.5m, while over in Sky Sports, he is valued at 5.7, some 1.1 cheaper than Dunk.

That should certainly put Sky managers on alert, while in FPL, Suttner deserves to be considered as an alternative to the identically-priced Dunk.

Hughton’s side were resilient last season, keeping 21 clean sheets. That included 12 at at the Amex Stadium with just 14 goals conceded – a Championship record.

The Seagulls’ early schedule is favourable following their opening weekend visit from Manchester City (lei wat WBA bou NEW). Their home matches certainly catch the eye with West Brom, Newcastle United, Everton, Southampton, Stoke City and Crystal Palace the next six to follow City.

Dunk’s CBI numbers, goal threat from set-plays and 4.5 price tag means he remains the key defensive target to exploit that run. However, Suttner, as a forward-thinking full-back with set-piece duties cannot be overlooked.

Pre-season will be vital in establishing his placing in the pecking order for free-kick duties. Once we are clear on that, we will have a better indication of Suttner’s potential to rival Dunk for our affections.

    Does Fabregas play in GW1?

    Courtois
    Rud Luiz Cahill
    Azpi Alonso
    Kante Bakayoko
    Pedro Bats Willian

If he does, who misses out?

Bakayoko is injured as I recall, so Fabregas is likely to play.

So he'll play next to Kante in the pivot until Bakayoko is ready.

    Feedback is appreciated:

    Foster, Elliott
    Milner, Kolasinac, Trippier, Dunk, Mariappa
De Bruyne, Salah, Willian, Ince, Loftus-Cheek
    Lukaku, Lacazette, Gayle

This is just for the first 5-6 gameweeks until I use my wild card to bring in Hazard. This is also under the assumption Milner is still first choice if Liverpool sign Robertson, and the assumption Liverpool sign Van Dijk. Thanks for the feedback!

Also Dunk, Ince, Loftus-Cheek and Gayle will be rotated depending on games, this is ignoring the fact I'll likely do 1-2 transfers a week to attempt to increase value heavily at the start.

1-2 transfers a week is a recipe for a bad rank.

Not fussed early on, I like to increase value best I can before I use my wild card but won't normally take more than 2-3 hits during the first 5-6 weeks. Early rank is irrelevant in my eyes, the value more key when using a wild card. I did only mean for the first 5-6 weeks, I'm assuming you didn't realise that reading your comment. Of course I wouldn't do that all year haha.

      Carroll over RLC
      Fab over William
Mariappa for anyone who will play.
Non playing high ownership players lose you money.

I don't see the logic behind Fabregas over Willian for the first 6 weeks? Issue is, I don't know who will play in the 4.0 bracket. I kept away from Hunemeier and Ragnal because of high ownership. Mariappa played the last 6 games of the season, hence why I went with him.

    3. Jafalad

Elliot unlikely to start if Rafa buys another keeper.
Not too sure on Kol and Mariappa but I like the balance in your D.
RLC may not start now that Puncheon has claimed his likely starting spot.
Ince and Salah are risky picks imo. They need to be watched first.
      Likewise Gayle and Lacazette.

A team full of too much uncertainty.

I'm keeping an eye on them don't worry. All scored in preseason so far (1 for Lacazette and Salah, 2 for Ince and Gayle) and performing well. I agree they'll definitely be potential changes if they don't keep their initial form up. Salah is an easy trade to Coutinho and Gayle to Austin. Lacazette will perform, he's got all the qualities needed to thrive in that Arsenal team, he's not a concern to me. Ince is tough, but likely would bring him up to Zaha and drop Milner to Lindelof or Cedric. Thanks for the feedback!

Good luck - Lacazette will hopefully be a good pick because we need an ARS option with no CL this season. 😉

            Another option is this:
            Gayle, Milner, Kolasinac, Elliot to
            Benteke, Lindelof, Cedric, Begovic.

Which do you think is better?

      Gks - try Fosski
Okay milfs although RLC may not start now and Willian has never been heavy enough for ff. You may want a LIV milf in there.
Fwds are okay bar Lacazette who needs monitoring to begin. Try Austin if he looks a likely starter.

Eriksen vs Alli. I opted for the Dane for the majority of last FPL season when I would have been better off with Alli. Can Dele maintain a similar record to the last two seasons, or would you go with the assist maestro Eriksen who has the ability for an upturn in goals?

Planning towards an early WC is a bad choice, doing one is fine. I think this year there's less to earn on an early WC, as CL starts after GW4 for all of the top teams bar Arsenal. A lot of players will go from seemingly nailed on to a rotation risk.

Morning folks, so after the Hart's a Hammer story I thought I'd check out his value...but he doesn't seem to be in the game? Any idea when he'll be added?
    Thanks

Fantasy aside Hart is a terrible keeper, so I wouldn't be expecting West Ham to suddenly tighten up with him at the back.

Joe Hart is terrible, period. He may have been good once, but not now.

Considering we're most probably WCing in GW4. At a 3-fixture span I'd go with 3 attacking defenders with a 4.5 (Dunk) and 4.0
Lindelof and Bertrand to Cedric and 6.0 (Kolasinac Bellerin) ?

Tough one. City will score lots of goals for sure. But Arsenal always do well at the start of the season and start tailing off around November. Between KDB and Lacazette, I'd go with KDB, because he has more PL experience.

          City IMO
Coz you have many options from their team. hose one who fits the budget.
Its just Sanchez (too xpensive) and Laca for Arsenal

Firmino started 21 games as cf or ss last season.
Scoring 7 goals and 9 assist. --> 16 and almost played 90 minutes each game.
14 games as wing. 4 goals and 1 assist.
So in the season coming, he will play as false nine(cf) and may represent first stats.
Also a winger gets injured he will most likely play in cf again and not wing because there could be coutinho who can replace wings.
I currenlty have lacazette, kane and aguero and don't know who to ditch for firmino. He seems no brainer to me in 8.5

Defoe got 15 goals last season playing with the likes of Borini. Firmino had 11 alongside Mane and Coutinho. He is not a good striker. His value lies in creating chances and space for others.

What 5.0 keeper do you prefer?
Forster - Clean sheets, not much bonus or saves.
Heaton - Bonus and plenty of saves, few clean sheets.
Butland - Nostalgia and same concept as Heaton.

Leaning towards this, or downgrade to the most in form 4.5 keeper when the fixtures start to turn.

Personally I prefer a 4.5 over 5.0 keepers, but here's my take on each of the above.

Forster - good fixtures, but same price as Cedric, who has more attacking potential.
Heaton - mixed fixtures, plus Burnley lost Keane, so a no-go imo.
Butland - mixed fixtures at the beginning, so not good value for 5.0

Yes also considering going with a 4.5 and upgrading my fourth defender to a 5.0 to get a better bench, I know people hate benchpoints but might come in handy with suprise rotation early on.

          Foster at 4.5
Butland/Heaton if you really want one..but I'd wait till the fixtures clear up

Just checked last season's stats for these three forwards...quite similar to each other - Firmino was able to create more chances, although his goal conversion ratio was lower, Benteke had most goal attempts in the box. If you need pick one, which one?

As a Liverpool fan I would sell sturridge he's just to unreliable but now he's staying and there's alot of talk in local press about his new positive attitude and klopp saying he's finally fit. I honestly think he may become a option over short periods of form and only 8m price
