Scout Reports

Scout Report – Jacob Murphy

Newcastle United followed up the signings of midfielder Christian Atsu and defender Florian Lejeune by completing their third major summer purchase with the addition of Norwich City winger Jacob Murphy for a reported fee of £12 million.

The England U21 international joins the club that he scored twice against last season in the Championship, and Magpies boss Rafa Benitez believes the 22-year-old can really thrive in his new environment:

“He’s a young and talented player and hopefully he can develop even more here. We hope he can show us the passion, commitment and ability that he showed in the Championship last season… It’s the type of player we are looking for.”

The History

Murphy joined Norwich’s youth set-up at the age of 11 and was a member of the side that won the 2012/13 FA Youth Cup.

He made his professional debut as a substitute in an FA Cup tie against Fulham in January 2014, before taking in loan spells at League One side Swindon Town and League Two outfit Southend United during the second half of the 2013/14 season.

The midfielder then joined fellow Championship club Blackpool on loan, producing two goals and a single assist in nine appearances, and also spent time at League One sides Scunthorpe United and Colchester United, where he registered four goals and three assists over 11 matches.

The Canaries decided to send Murphy on a season-long loan to League One outfit Coventry City, where he enjoyed a very successful campaign, totalling nine goals and 10 assists in 40 outings.

Murphy finally got his chance at Carrow Road last season, producing eight goals and eight assists over his 37 league appearances.

He has represented England at U18, U19, U20 and U21 levels and was part of the squad that reached the semi-finals of this summer’s UEFA U21 European Championship.

The Prospects

After making Atsu’s loan move permanent earlier this summer, the addition of Murphy will provide the Magpies with another creative threat out wide.

In Matt Ritchie, Newcastle have an industrious player who can not only provide goals, but who also has the ability to deliver quality into the box.

The former Bournemouth wide man isn’t blessed with pace, though, so Murphy, who is capable of playing on either flank, although he played predominantly down the right for Norwich, should provide a good balance if he operates on the left for Benitez’s side.

Murphy, a boyhood Newcastle fan, is quick, direct, and also has an eye for goal.

When asked what he can bring to his new club, Murphy took the opportunity to outline these qualities and underline his suitability as a Fantasy asset.

“What will I bring? An attacking flair. Pace. I’m very direct and I like to shoot. I like to provide chances for the team. I’m an attacking wide midfielder so I will try my best to get goals and assists for this club.”

Although he is still very raw, and can drift in and out of matches, the 22-year-old looks to have the attributes to thrive under the tutelage of Benitez, who should ensure that Murphy doesn’t neglect his defensive duties, something he has been guilty of in the past.

That will be important, given that Benitez favours a 4-2-3-1 formation in which his wide players need to track back and offer protection in front of the full-backs.

Looking at Murphy’s underlying statistics from last season, he impressively averaged a shot every 29.82 minutes – better than both Ritchie (31.67) and Atsu (43.64).

But while Murphy provided a stronger goal threat, he only managed to produce a key pass every 61.02 minutes, inferior to both Ritchie (44.34) and Atsu (54.17).

The England U21 international may lack slightly in the creativity stakes then, but his goal threat, and specifically the quality of his finishing, make him an intriguing Fantasy prospect.

Murphy’s potential is likely to see him come in at between 5.5 and 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and given Ritchie has the majority of set-piece duties and is on penalties for the Magpies, he may need to come in at the cheaper end of the scale to tempt investment.

But Newcastle attackers are certainly on the radar, with their early fixtures (TOT hud WHM swa STO bha) very favourable following the daunting opener with Spurs.

Dwight Gayle and Ritchie are proven commodities, however, while Murphy has only played one full season in the Championship, so it is difficult to look past the more experienced pair from the off.

Newcastle’s pre-season matches will hopefully provide some insight as to how much faith Benitez has in Murphy.

The potential is clear with his valuation a key factor, but a lack of experience makes him a target to monitor, with team-mates Ritchie and Gayle currently the more assured options.

    (Long post, I’ve used subheadings)

    Hello!
As some of you may or may not be aware, I’ve finally committed to an indefinite break from FPL. However, I have noticed lots of people pondering the Tadic vs Redmond thing on twitter so I thought I’d address it on here - with a bit on the strikers and the full backs too. I hope most of you know me as a ‘realistic’ fan so I don’t tend to talk up players too much - I’ve been historically very slow to Saints based bandwagons. So I hope what advice I provide here is balanced.

    Pellegrino’s reputation and style
Much has been said about Pellegrino’s (MP) style and approach and the similarities with Puel’s conservatism (which ultimately cost him his job). Yes, MP’s Alaves team had similar problems scoring goals as Southampton last year. BUT that was an Alaves team tipped for relegation, dealing with a huge number of loanees and second division players, a really cobbled together team. Alaves massively surpassed expectations, Southampton finished 17 points lower on the previous season. Moreover, this season will see the return of Austin to fitness and I would expect significant improvements from Sofiane Boufal who never really adapted after a series of difficult injury periods - both of these factors should improve the attack also.

Yes, MP likes to defend in numbers with his 4-2-3-1, much like Puel, but we should expect to see much faster transitions from a more compact and ambitious team. MP places value on speedy counter attacks and high pressing - this is where there are undoubted parallels with Pochettino, although of course Southampton do not have the same kind of attacking prowess.

What does this mean for Tadic vs Redmond?
I’m thinking Redmond. He’s more committed to pressing opposition, he’s got much more natural pace and would be a better pairing for MP’s style. I also believe that he tends to go missing less than Tadic who blows hot and cold - much to the frustration of FPL players and Saints fans alike. A hot Tadic is better than an average Redmond performance but those, so far, have been infrequent. If Boufal shows notable improvement, he could also place Tadic under pressure as the obvious no. 10 choice.
    BUT
If Tadic shows clear pre-season form, he’s worth consideration. Redmond will have had less time training than Tadic which means less fitness and less time to impress MP. Tadic is also notoriously streaky, much like Pelle who came to Saints in the same summer. If you can get Tadic on a streak, he could be worth a decent number of assists.

    Strikers?
I’d be leaving these alone for now. Firstly, we’ve been linked with a raft of strikers and sold JRod. This might mean a new man coming into the ranks, or it could mean that Sam Gallagher is set to play a more significant role in the squad. If Pellegrino plays his conventional 4-2-3-1, it’s not clear who from Austin and Gabbiadini leads the line, and there could even be a wide berth for someone like Long. There MAY be opportunity to see MP try a traditional 4-4-2 but it’s unlikely, at this stage, to be a consistent tactic. So I wouldn’t get too carried away if you see him experimenting with that in pre-season. If you pushed me, I’d say Gabbiadini, given that he’s much more mobile than Austin, more personally inclined to do the pressing that MP would probably want from his strikers, and less injury prone.

    Cedric? or Bertrand?
Lastly, Cedric, for me, is excellent value and I don’t deem Bertrand worth the extra cash (although Bertrand is probably the better player and has the more consistent FPL reputation). Cedric’s crossing is frequent and accurate and I expect him to do well - the stats reflect a great deal of potential which wasn’t harnessed last season. For all of Puel’s faults, Cedric was one of a number of players (including JWP and Yoshida) who showed great development under his tutelage. Moreover, MP’s formation/tactics place value on the ability of fullbacks and wingers to help transform high pressing defence into attack. The success of Theo Hernandez on loan at Alaves last season is a great example of this. Without EL or Puel, I’d expect to see much less rotation in these areas - an issue which stung a few owners last season and I totally accept the frustration.

    But without Van Dijk?
If Van Dijk leaves, I would expect Southampton to sign another CB of decent quality to replace him, potentially even two, given that Fonte was never replaced by an experienced top flight player. That might have a short term impact on CS output but I would expect it to be recovered fairly quickly. Although Van Dijk is probably one of the most talented players I’ve seen in a Saints shirt, I think tweaks to tactics and the continued development of Oriol Romeu could help to counteract any significant drop off.

Thank you, Lucy. What are your thoughts about Yoshida and Stephens vs. Cedric FPL-wise?

      1. Lucy.
        • 11 Years
        7 years, 3 months ago

I'd steer clear of both of them, unless pre-season establishes a clear preference on MP's part. If Van Dijk stays (which I still consider to be possible, given the precedent set with Wanyama and Schneiderlin, if unlikely), it's one of them with him. If Van Dijk goes, presumably for north of £60m, I'd expect some of that money to be invested in a new first choice CB option, again with one of those two.

At this moment, I think it may well be Stephens who plays - a product of the youth academy (or technically Plymouth's but here since 16) and recipient of a new contract (so would be in keeping with our 'philosophy') but Yoshida had by far his best spell in a Saints shirt under Puel. Neither are particularly brilliant on the end of set pieces, whereas I think Cedric offers genuine attacking threat.

I don't think he'll ever reach his 13/14 levels because that injury has seriously dented his movement and speed. BUT I think WBA made sense as a move for all parties involved. Our problem was he was never going to get the consistent game time that he would need to get anywhere close to his best, given what Gabbiadini and Austin offer. He could easily crack in 10 goals but I don't see him being prolific and it would depend on how he's played/if he can link up with Rondon.

JWP - Not nailed but worth monitoring. If he could cement a place, his set pieces make him a good value alternative, particularly as a constantly improving asset. He doesn't seem a natural fit for MP's counter attacking style but the sheer quality of his deliveries may mean MP accommodates him, despite his lack of explosiveness.

      Hi Lucy,
Who is likely to be the DCM with a licence to get forward quickly? Presuming Romeu is one but who fits best alongside from Davis, Clasie and Hojbjerg?

I think it'll likely be Davis to start with but Hojbjerg was the standout performer in the first friendly and I believe he'll be vying for a place before too long. I'm quite excited about him.

    Hi Lads,

Can I ask what your policy is for the start of the season please - Do you tend to spend the 100M from the start?

Reason I ask is I have built the following team after my daily tinkering and I think it looks solid for the opening weeks and I have 2M left in the bank.

    Foster

    Trippier, Lindelöf, Tomkins, Cedric

    Arnautovic, Alli, Phillips

    Jesus, Lukaku, Lacessette

Looks like United, West Ham, West Brom and Southampton have a favourable few weeks so trying to capitalise 🙂

Would you guys recommend spending the 2M or do you think my team could do well in the short term (pre-Wildcard)?

    Thanks.

To be honest you could swap him for Dann etc - More a place holder for a Crystal Palace defender as I have the 2M in the bank.

Think I'd spend 1m of the 2m. Downgrade Lacazette, upgrade Phillips and Arnie, to have a stronger midfield.

Any recommendations Pele? Thanks for the advice by the way 🙂

I just look at the options in MF and it would really hit my attack if I was to upgrade to say a KDB for example.

Plus, I really fear Lacazette could smash in goals - Decisions decisions 🙂

          I would do this:
Laca -> Defoe (flexible allows you to jump on an emerging 6.5m FWD and scores goals himself. That's 2.5m free. Plus the 1m of the 2m free you have 3.5m Spend 1m on Phillips -> Willian and 2m on Arnie to Coutinho/Salah. Then your midfield is strong and you have 0.5 to upgrade your defence or anywhere else you want and 1m in the bank 🙂

Like where your head's at Pele 🙂

            Thanks for the advice?

So you are not in favour of mega strong front 3?

I am in favour of 2 big hitters, on Kane and Lukaku myself, but then would want a cheaper punty 3rd FWD to allow more balance. I have Gayle as my 3rd FWD ATM. If you went for Gayle over Lacazette, who knows what you could do 🙂

It's actually a really good idea to keep 0.5 or 1.0 in the bank as it means you can hop on any bandwagons without having to take an early hit. I always try and fail to do this

Arnie could be a good shout for West Ham, away from home he will be out on the left wing tasked with swinging crosses in but at home he may play just off the front so could get into the action. Lanzini at £7mil & Hernandez are better options IMO.

      Good luck

Unsettled mainly about the following 2 things:
          1. Is the midfield too weak?
          2. Are all the players sure to start? (esp. Fabregas, Sane, Phillips)

Not true. Taken UNDER Pep's wing, yes, but Jesus is a natural poacher and will eventually oust Aguero...much like Martial should try to do to whoever plays up top at United but he really will be shunted to the wing permanently now...but Jesus will play up top. Maybe 4-4-2 will be used often by Pep.

Either way I can see Kun and Jesus playing 65 minutes in most games. I want to own one for sure but struggling to decide.

                  Good luck to you, Wizard!!
