The Numbers Game – Manchester United

Our summer series of members’ articles, offering an in-depth team-by-team analysis of the previous campaign, continues with Manchester United.

To get things up and running, we’ll look at the performance levels on a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements.

We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for early targets ahead of the new season.

Replacing Louis van Gaal as manager last May, Jose Mourinho could only manage a sixth-place finish in his first year in charge at Old Trafford.

This was, in part, due to the club’s successful march to Europa League success as Mourinho rotated his side towards the latter stages of the league season.

Despite adding big-name buys such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in attack, the Red Devils netted just 54 times – up five on 2015/16 and only eighth best in the top-flight.

Meanwhile, a total of 69 points was just three more than their haul from Van Gaal’s final year at the helm.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Sure starter for the first few gameweeks, the first two/three in particular, after that who knows. He could still score a lot of points in those games, though.

This is as far as I'm looking for now really. Would likely use him as a downgrade to a 5.5 def gw3 to get kane funds as kane 3 and 5 looks vital

Yes he seems on pens and guaranteed but clean sheets are bread and butter and if you are paying that you want Alonso attacking returns.

        Walker has been mentioned

Pre season has swayed but at that price even if a United players gets an assist they could go up in value.

I think he has too much quality and now he has had a pre season and a forward that bullies smaller teams I think he will do very well.

Its much easier to shift from 3-5-2 to a 4-4-2 when needed than the other way around mainly because of that not so cheap 5th midfielder

Think Wenger has it wrong on Elneny. Would have been better selling Ox who will be a slightly better Theo Walcott:

        Cech
        Mustafi Koscielny Monreal
        Bellerin Elneny Xhaka Kolasanic
        Ozil Lemar

Take the Sanchez money and buy Lemar IMO. Ramsey such an overrated player too - all on the basis of one good season years ago.

    Lacazette vs Jesus? Both 10.5.

Lacazette more nailed as a starter and as a no. 9, of course.

On the other hand, don't really trust Arse & Lacazette to hit the ground running, and I fancy Jesus to plunder a bunch of goals in some of those first 10 GW fixtures.

There were signs last season that against weaker teams Pep was up for playing Aguero and Jesus together, with something like Sane-Silva-KDB-Sterling behind. (Pick your preference out of Silva 1 and Silva 2.) Not a lot of defending in that lot but if your plan is just to keep 95% posession...

Haven't been paying much attention to pre-season games. Have Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs stuck to a back three? What about City?

Arsenal and Chelsea have, Spurs have not (not that they play with a back three anyways).

Sorry, my mistake. They actually played with it 12 out of 38 games last year. But in the game against PSG it was two CBs from my understanding.

Interesting team. I like these 3 as a midfield, though given you have so much in defense you could easily find 2m for Willian to Coutinho/Salah or Lacazette to Kane if you were so inclined
