Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Pre-Season

A loss for Chelsea, mayhem for Spurs and wins for Brighton and Burnley as the pre-season warm-ups return.

Stoke City are dulled by the Blades, however, despite the best efforts of Xherdan Shaqiri.

Here are the notes from Tuesday’s action…

Chelsea 2 Bayern Munich 3

Goals from Marcos Alonso and Michy Batshuayi took some of the sting out of a first pre-season loss for Chelsea as new striker Alvaro Morata made his debut.

The Spaniard claimed the assist for Batshuayi’s goal, flicking on a Cesc Fabregas corner, as the Blues belatedly recovered from being three down just before the break.

In an otherwise poor defensive display from the champions, Alonso’s goal, set up by Victor Moses, would have at least been heartening for the 13.9% of Fantasy Premier League managers with a chunky 7.0 tied up in the defender.

If the Spaniard is to deliver on his premium price this season, he’ll need to come close to replicating last year’s stellar campaign that harvested six goals, provided five assists and kept 15 clean sheets.

His performance against Bayern hinted at exactly that, although there were some uncharacteristic frailties on display at the back, with Thibaut Courtois and Cesar Azpilicueta particularly unconvincing as the Germans took control of the match.

Chelsea will not face many teams as potent as Bayern, however.

Young attacker Jeremie Boga again stood in for Pedro as he recovers from his almighty collision with Arsenal’s David Ospina, while Andreas Christensen played for just over an hour at the heart of Chelsea’s frequently troubled defence.

After breezing past the Gunners, this was a major reality check for Chelsea, with the 11.1%-owned Morata’s assist one of the few positives to emerge.

Chelsea XI: Courtois (Eduardo 74); Azpilicueta, Christensen (Luiz 63), Cahill; Moses, Kante, Fabregas (Pasalic 86), Alonso (Tomori 74); Willian, Batshuayi (Baker 86), Boga (Morata 63).
Subs not used: Caballero, Bulka, Kalas, Clarke-Salter, Scott, Remy.

Tottenham Hotspur 2 Roma 3

Another day, another high-scoring match for Spurs, but this time they were on the wrong end of a five-goal thriller won at the death by rivals Roma.

Late strikes from Harry Winks, from a Vincent Janssen rebound, and then Janssen himself, who swept home a Georges-Kevin Nkoudou cross, brought Spurs back from a two-goal deficit.

But the Italians had the last laugh in a match most notable for a wretched refereeing display from Hilario Grajeda.

The American official gave Roma a contentious penalty, denied Spurs what looked like a clear spot-kick of their own, watched a mini-brawl break out among the players and then tried, and completely failed, to send off Spurs coach Miguel D’Agostino.

Other than that, he had a great night.

Mauricio Pochettino mixed and matched, using three at the back in the first-half and a flat back four after the break, with key players such as Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Kieran Trippier and Toby Alderweireld given the full 90 minutes. Youngster Josh Onomah was utilised in a central support role.

But the club’s lack of activity in the transfer market – chairman Daniel Levy going public with his belief that rivals’ spending is ‘unsustainable’ – and worries over the effect playing home matches at Wembley will have on the side have combined to dampen interest in Spurs stars.

Alli (38.0%) and Kane (34.1%) are highly popular FPL choices, but just four other team-mates make it into double figures for ownership.

By contrast, Chelsea have eight assets owned by at least 10% of FPL managers, with two injured players – Pedro and Eden Hazard – likely to join them once fit.

Spurs XI First half: Vorm; Carter-Vickers, Alderweireld, Vertonghen; Trippier, Dier, Dembele, Walker-Peters; Onomah, Alli; Kane.

Spurs XI Second half: Lloris; Trippier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies; Winks, Dembele; Eriksen, Alli, Georgiou; Kane.

Southend 0 Brighton and Hove Albion 3

Solly March made it three goals in two matches for Brighton as Chris Hughton’s men again gave lower league opposition short shrift.

The midfielder scored twice, and veteran striker Glenn Murray added a third, while new Chelsea loan signing Izzy Brown was thrown straight into the side and earned post-match praise from his boss for his versatility.

“Izzy can play on either flank, but we know he can play off the front as well. Eventually, he could play as a number nine, but I don’t see him as a nine, I see him as one that is going to play off a front man or in a wide area.”

Assists came from Liam Rosenior, Markus Suttner and Murray.

Hughton chose to rest a number of first-teamers ahead of another pre-season run-out, on Saturday, against Norwich City.

It’s also worth noting that centre-back Uwe Huenemeier – priced at 4.0 in FPL and owned by 8.4% – played the full 90 minutes alongside Lewis Dunk in the heart of defence.

Brighton XI: Maenpaa; Rosenior (Cox 63), Huenemeier, Dunk (Tilley 82), Suttner (White 63); March (Molumby 82), Sidwell (LuaLua 63), Stephens (Dallison 82), Brown (Ince 63); Gross (Towell 82); Murray (Connelly 71).

Preston North End 1 Burnley 2

Robbie Brady was at the heart of Burnley’s win over Lancashire rivals Preston, with the goals coming from Jonathan Walters and Sam Vokes.

The Irish midfielder’s set-piece skills were a threat throughout.

His free-kick found Tom Anderson, who headed across goal for Walters to score, before the fit-again Vokes hit the winner, applying the slightest of touches to a Kevin Long header, again from a Brady dead-ball delivery.

Manager Sean Dyche’s latest buy, the experienced full-back Phil Bardsley, took no part in the match, but most of the Clarets’ first-team squad gained more valuable pitch-time.

Walters now has two goals and an assist since joining the club, while the productive Brady has returned a goal and assist.

But FPL interest in Burnley players remains low in light of the club’s tough start to the season – they travel to Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool and Everton over the first seven Gameweeks – and only Tom Heaton and Ben Mee enjoy notable ownership.

Burnley XI: Heaton (Pope, 46); Lowton (C Long 81), Taylor (Ward 71), Anderson, K Long (Mee 64); Brady (Barnes 71), Gudmundsson (Ulvestad 75), Westwood (Defour 64), Cork (Hendrick 64); Walters (Agyei 81), Vokes (Gray 81).

Sheffield United 2 Stoke City 1

Xherdan Shaqiri was on the scoresheet for Stoke City as Kurt Zouma’s debut for the club ended in defeat.

The Swiss international combined with Ramadan Sobhi to level for the Potters before a late goal gave the hosts the win.

Chelsea loanee Zouma played the first half alongside Ryan Shawcross at the centre of the Stoke defence, but it was Shaqiri who caught the eye as he looks to take on more attacking responsibility following the sale of Marko Arnautovic to West Ham.

Elsewhere, defender Geoff Cameron was used in midfield for the first half, allowing Joe Allen to play in a more attacking role, before Hughes shuffled his pack after the break.

It should also be noted that Bardsley’s departure to Burnley seemingly cements Glen Johnson’s start at right-back or right wing-back; like Cameron, he is available as a 4.5 Stoke defender in FPL.

Stoke City XI: Grant; Johnson (Edwards 69), Pieters (Tymon 69) Shawcross (Muniesa 80), Zouma (Crouch 46); Fletcher (Adam 80) Cameron (Wollscheid 80); Shaqiri (Diouf 73), Allen (Imbula 80), Ramadan; Berahino (Bojan 73).

It seems we were willing to forgo Alonso for 7.0 but yesterday’s goal seems to have convinced us to re-assess that.

Given Robertson’s arrival at Liverpool casting doubt on Milner’s minutes, are we now looking to Alonso as our premium defender?

Are we willing to shell out the 7.0. do we think it can be justified and what comprimises are you prepared to take to get him in?

An excellent HT form Rupert The Horse, offers more analysis of Alonso.

Interesting. I'm just settling on Kane and Lukaku I think. I'm looking at a downgrade in my defence to accommodate him.

One of my favourite players last season. I might monitor his stats for a few weeks but my feeling is if I don't get him from th e off, I'll never work him in.

If you are going to put him in the pseudo-midfield category, you better look at his shots on target. 🙂

And, fwiw, I can't see him taking many free kicks of Willian, so I disagree there.

I'm not sure why Chelsea are chasing him, Alonso was one of Chelsea's best players last year surely 60m+ would be better spent on other areas of the team. I mean we all love Victor here, but the FA cup final proved that was something of a weak spot in the team.

Yes, because bringing in premium defenders and cheap mids increases my access to, and choice of, captains 🙂
Currently have Kane, Kak, Cout and KDB - potentially willing to switch KDB and upgrade 3rd striker to Jesus/Laca

I'll keep a close eye on him, but I'm still favouring Valencia because of the fixtures at the moment. I might leave 0.5 in the bank though to upgrade if Alonso looks like tearing it up like last season again. There's still plenty of pre season to go though in which to assess all the options, keeping an open mind is the best strategy of all at this stage I feel!

Playing 433 with Alonso at the back is akin to playing 343 with a winger that gets clean sheet points. Makes the 7.0 price tag seem dirt cheap.

to be honest if they don't sign any real competition i can't see him not scoring 160+ again this season. unless they have a particularly brutal run of games he'd be someone you could leave in all season, few things beat that thrill of a 6 point goal

Yep, also I wonder if he'll be sharing FK's from the off. Willian playing might reduce those but you'd have to think when they turn to a left-footer, it will be Alonso. He only prised them from Luiz over the last ten GW's last season and hit the bar twice.

I think he can be a star in GW1 already... And for the rest of the season the stats are here to show that he can carry this price tag compared to midfielders at this price... So it looks very tempting to own him right from the start.. Could easily bring 10-15pts vs Burnley at home !

It's so close Mark. So many factors with this move. We've had this theme pop up several times over the years, but it's been with Baines. I might try and dig up some old articles on him. Essentially the argument was it's like having another midfielder.

There's still a long way to go until the transfer window closes and Chelsea may well sign another left back ahead of the CL group stages with whom he will rotate. That, the price and the mixed opening fixtures are enough to convince me to ignore - a decision I will probably regret.

I just don't buy the 'too expensive for a defender' argument.

If he were classed as a 7.0 midfielder and FPL towers decided to make a special exception and grant him CS points we would all be all over him. He is good value as a wingback (essentially a winger) playing for one of the PL's strongest teams, provided he plays regularly and there isn't too much competition for his position (which there isn't currently).

I feel emotionally attached to him, as he was in my team almost all last season, but realistically, at 7.0, and with difficult fixtures to start, and with all other teams much hungrier than Chelsea, I believe Chelsea will underperform this year. I cannot fit him in my team where I have Valencia and Walker. Unless I am sure these two will start the season, I can2t get Alonso, however sad this sounds.

Moses is the one you should be looking at, not Alonso.

No defender can match Moses's shots in the box from GW7 onwards.

      £0.5m cheaper as well.

I was initially tempted to knee-jerk too, but we don't buy players for the long term in this game. We buy them for the short term fixtures. Yes, he practically plays like a midfielder, but his value still mainly lies in clean sheets. I don't reckon Chelsea will keep a lot of clean sheets in the first seven weeks, and if they don't, his price isn't going to skyrocket either. And then, I may get him on the inevitable WC or just with a hit. I like Willian as an option, so I just don't wanna double up now.

Think there's a case that you can go without for first 7 GWs, especially as this is around the time that many will look to play first wildcard.

Fixtures are average until then and unlikely that he will suffer much of a price rise in this period. Hopefully by then we will have built up enough team value to virtually be able to upgrade to him from a £6.5m defender for free.

I've seen a few people trying to justify including Alonso as though he were a 7.0 MID by changing the formation of
343 to 433 and claiming it's a straight swap. This is not the case.

When you start the season with a 343 formation, the aim (for some) is to invest as little money as possible on the bench with at least 2 nailed on players.

Usually this takes on the form of: 2 4.5 GKs who rotates or a 4.0 GK deputy; At least one-out-of-two 4.5 DEFs (if not 2) and/or a 4.0 who might start due to injuries and gain value otherwise never get used; and a 4.5 Mid.

The most expensive bench most go for would be 4.5x4 for extra points through rotation and surety of cover = 18M, while the cheapest would be 4.0+4.5+4.0+4.5=17M.

To move to 433 isn't as simple as saying I'm switching one of the Magnificent 7's and my team, and I have the better scoring potential/balance.

e.g. 7.0 -> Alonso. What does the bench look like now?

The cheapest bench becomes counter productive. If you have a 4.0 defender who's unreliable after a couple weeks then your formation will become 343 every time there is injury/rotation ... with a 4.5 MID being forced on.

Fact is there aren't that many reliable 4.5 MIDS compared to DEFS.

So what you believe you might gain from Alonso in points over a 7.0 may be lost every time you go to the bench (even ignoring potential increases to value early on) and not being able to rotate that 4th defender for clean sheets.

For those that are making a 433 team with Alonso replacing a 7.0 ... I see the following type of team ... which doesn't have the safer, more reliable and rotate-able Defenders as the 18M bench option above.

      Foster
      Alonso Cedric Daniels 4.5
      DeBuryne Alli Couts
      Lukaku Lacazette Austin

      Myhill R-LC Carrol 4.0

It's a nice team while every1 is fit and playing ... but it will be very frustrating when rotation/injuries set in and that 4.5 defender isn't rotate-able ... you may also notice your bench hasn't gained 0.1 in value combined.

    Foster/Myhill
    Dawson Daniels Dunk Mee Rosenier
    Alli Eriksen Willian Zaha Carroll
    Kun Kaku Defoe

    1) Foster/Myhill have great fixtures, 8.5 apt budget
    2) Daniels, Dawson have attacking threat
    3) Dunk is cheap and is a BPS magnet
    4) Mee has excellent home fixtures
    5) Alli, Eriksen cover Kane to some extent. Eriksen is a bit of a punt with low ownership.
6)Willian essential imo untill Haz is back
7)Carroll over RLC because of some set pieces from Carroll
8)Kun is of Kane's calibre and can go mad any day
9)Defoe and kaku are playing for good attacking teams and can get a hat-trick on their day

Something a bit different. We're doing a draft at work. 8 teams, 120 players. I'm wondering about the first 2 rounds and how to order my picks. Currently have

Kane, Lukaku, Haz, De Bruyne, Lacazette, Morata, Alli, Eriksen, Aguero, Jesus, Ozil, Salah, D Silva, Mane, Defoe

Figure that defenders are a waste at this stage because everyone will be hoovering up attackers and midfielders, so I have to be in that arms race. But first picks have to be nailed starters I reckon, so have Aguero/Jesus slightly further back. No Sanchez because it seems like a major risk, but if he doesn't go, someone's going to get a gem. Happening Friday. Who would you swap?

      My order would be:
Kane, Lukaku, Kun, Lacazette/Morata, Sanchez, Jesus, Alli, Eriksen, kdb, hazard, mane, coutinho/Sane/Salah, Defoe, ozil.

D Silva would feature much later for me as I see him having less play time. Always go premium strikers cause with a 8 player league the options are very very slim.

Hazard 3rd pick when injured is a waste imo. Aguero and Sanchez both top 5 picks for me. Also Mane and Coutinho ahead of Salah, D. Silva and Defoe.

i am having doubts of whether Boufal or Tadic will start...both have played preseason...somehow Charlie Austin looks more assured..Currently i have Tadic+gayle as the cheaper mid/st...so here's the question:
Do i swap Tadic+Gayle to Ritchie+Austin (gives me 0.5), or do you think this has more points potential for the first few GWs?

Myhill won't play!! You can get brighton (Finland international) or Huddersfields keeper for cheaper!! And they will play every single week!!

There are a lot of options around this year.. I personally wouldn't go for the Alli/Eriksen combo.. just one of them.

Haha, I understand that.. But there is no rotation possibilities dependant on fixtures.. West Brom has Chelsea for example.. your screwed... Whereas Brighton might be playing huddersfield that same week (just an example) id rather play the Brighton keeper that week! lol.

It's the combo selected by cost conscious managers who don't expect good GK returns. GKs typically don't achieve BPs as readily as defenders.

          CM: Wij/Grujic
          CAM: Cout/Lallana

Totally disagree, first choice front 6:

            Lallana Hendo Coutinho
            --Mane Firmino Salah

It's feasible but I think Klopp is a bit more conservative than that. Lallana consistently played as the most advanced in the midfield three.

If Wiji were to be dropped I think Can is more of a threat than Lallana (although Can is far better at 6 than in Wiji position).

I agree with Mane, Firmino and Salah. Can only see them being rotated if he's resting them for CL fixtures.

Good balance ? No Arsenal in team

    Foster (Elliot)
    Trippler Bertrand Lindelof (Dunk, Rangel)
    Salah Sane Wilian Zaha (Carroll)
    Kane Kaku Austin

Not a big fan of Saha and Lindelof. I'd go Tadic/Redmond and Ake/Daniels instead,

Yes, I like it, very similar to mine. I'd wait to see if Lindelof is 100% first choice, you'd expect him to be but you never know.

Really like the front 7. Austin is amazing but I worry about his playing time.

Anybody considering a power 5 across midfield?

I'd love to do something like that but not having a heavy hitting strikers goes against everything I've ever done in FPL.

      What are you thinking?

      KDB, Coutinho, Alli, Eriksen, Sanchez?

KDB, Coutinho, Allí, Pogba, Hazard is what I was thinking, once Haz is fit obis.

After last year (where there were about three strikers in the game worth having), this year brings options a plenty up top 🙂

You can't afford to go without at least 2 of the big strikers IMO.

Sanchez Hazard KDB Mane Pogba is probably the power 5 this year costing, £50ml - No I've never entertained any of these 5.

Had a little re-jig to bring in Kane and Alonso, what are people's thoughts on this:

    Foster | Elliott
    Alonso | Cedric | Tripper | Hünemeier | Lascelles
    Alli | Coutinho | Willian | Ramsay | TCarroll
    Kane | Lukaku | Fletcher

This will leave me Lukaku or Kane as a clear (c) option each week, but means that one of Hünemeier, Lascelles and TCarroll will have to start. I'm leaning towards this being a sacrifice worth making for 5 "gun" players (Kane, Lukaku, Cout, Alli and Alonso) and am quite excited about Willian as an option without Hazard, and fancy a punt on Rambo

I had Austin as Saints cover in my previous draft. This will have me umm-ing and ahh-ing until the 11th (also I like having a player in the first fixture of the gameweek, not sure why)

Coutinho was the first name on my sheet this season; think this could be a huge season for him. Looked at Alli to Sane, but certainty of starts (and anyone at Citeh's lack of certainty) turns me off

This post below from Ruth regarding 'How to find that gem' needs to be hulked. Absolutely fantastic piece.

Mahrez showed a lot of talent in 2014/15 but Pearson didn't trust him and he never got much of a run in the team. Ranieri saw the potential when he arrived and Mahrez did very well in pre-season. It was pretty obvious he'd be first choice at the start of that season. I remember being down to Mahrez or Ritchie for the last midfielder slot in my team that season (both were 5.5m) and making a late decision for Ritchie. But I corrected that in GW2. Point is that he was pickable, it didn't come out of the blue.

As for King, he had great stats when he played for a couple of seasons actually, not in terms of goals but in terms of on-target attempts per game and so on. But he also had a lot of injuries and he wasn't always picked when fit either. It was a matter of waiting for the breakthrough point when Howe would see him as a regular starter and that happened last season.

I guess what I'm saying is for a younger player to break through it takes a number of factors to coincide. Kane only got into the Spurs team 2 seasons ago because Soldado and Adebayor were failing dismally. Otherwise he'd probably have been restricted to the Europa League and Cups. He certainly started that season as Pochettino's 3rd choice striker for 1 slot.

    So, what do you need?

    1. A young player that has previously shown signs of good talent/potential.
    2. A situation where either a new manager fancies them or where injuries give them an opportunity for a run in the team.
    3. A fast start, because when the opportunity comes they'll usually only get 4-6 games to demonstrate that they deserve the place.

Rashford has the potential to be that kind of player I think. An injury to Lukaku early in the season might do it. Or Mourinho might decide to give his 3-5-2 a run, that might do it. Or Rashford might be in and out, play wide a lot and mainly Cup games. So all you can do is note players like that and wait for the moment. Timing is everything.
