The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 3 – Saturday

The Manchester clubs are united in tormenting Fantasy Football managers.

In fairness, we should have expected Pep Guardiola’s City teamsheet to prove a source of frustration. It should come as no real surprise.

Even so, he seems determined to baffle us.

Having withdrawn Gabriel Jesus at half-time on Monday night following Kyle Walker’s dismissal, it appeared to signal that Guardiola’s affections were leaning towards Sergio Aguero for the lone striker role.

But just six days later, it was Aguero who made way as the City manager shuffled his formation and personnel in a bid to solve the frustration of Monday’s misses.

Aguero travelled to the Vitality Stadium today on the back of seven goals in his last seven away trips. He was backed by over 265,000 (5.7%) Fantasy Premier League managers with the captaincy.

Inevitably, Jesus took his opportunity to justify his selection. He served up his first goal of the season at Bournemouth having been sold by over 119,000 managers, triggering a 0.1 drop in price.

To make matters worse Aguero, along with today’s other omission from Monday’s teamsheet – John Stones – were both introduced from the bench by Guardiola. Auto-subs and Vice Captains were nullified.

City’s formation change – a move to 4-3-3 – also saw Kevin De Bruyne retreated alongside David Silva and Fernandinho as part of a central three.

That role muted his goal threat and again left him probing around the fringes of City’s 2-1 victory.

Statistically, the Belgian was still the most creative player in Gameweek 3 so far, providing four chances and laying on a big chance for Nicolas Otemendi who struck the post.

But those brief flashes will be lost on his Fantasy owners. They will continue to plot the exit of a 10.0 priced asset that has delivered three successive blanks. De Bruyne has already been sold more than any other player since the passing of today’s deadline.

As for United, while they engineered a 2-0 victory over a stubborn Leicester City at Old Trafford, Fantasy managers were left smarting by Romelu Lukaku’s penalty miss.

It remains to be seen if this dents Lukaku’s stock. There will be an ongoing debate on whether he will retain spot-kicks and whether Paul Pogba could be the beneficiary in waiting.

But for now, we can only consider what comes next in this current Gameweek.

Captained by over 1.7 million (37.3%) FPL managers, Lukaku’s zero point return sat alongside Aguero’s failing and a first blank from Pogba to set up Sunday’s performers.

Spurs’ Harry Kane now heads into a Wembley date with Burnley sporting over 741,000 armbands. Some 53% of his 1.3 million owners have trusted him as their skipper.

Confidence in Kane has been dented following his two single point returns, but now the scene is set for him to deliver the season’s first major twist.

A double-figure tally would cause a significant swing. Couple that with an impressive performance from Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and it would represent a turning point that could spark transfer hits and Wildcards aplenty.

While Saturday disappointed, it means that Sunday could be huge for all kinds of reasons.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

After exiting TorresMagic's LMS in GW1 (45 points) 🙁 , and falling below average GW2 I'm happy that I'm enjoying a good gameweek now or I would surely be nothing but bench fodder.

Why is everyone dropping KDB when the round hasn't finished??? What because you might lose your precious £0.1, his downfall is not all bad it allows owners to take their time a make a calculated transfer. Most people are transferring Eriksen or Mane what happens if they blank what will you do ?

Impatience and frustration! I fell for them both. Tbf was going to get rid after this GW anyway, got 2 FT so used one to get in Alli for KDB. Means i still have 1 FT after the break.

Because for 10m, I think there are other options worth more value. I do expect the points to come for KDB eventually (perhaps even in GW4), but I don't see him outscoring Eriksen, Mane, Salah, Pogba, Mickey T and whoever else over the next 6 or so fixtures until we get into WC territory. Plus it frees up funds for Sanchez/Hazard if they come back on red hot form.

Sold KdB for Mikhi before the drop, may buy him back at a cheaper price if he hauls next game. Don't see what the issue is really ? Man U play Stoke and City play Liverpool next and I fancy Mikhi to out score KdB

    Pep confused??

Pep does not seem to know what he wants. His players are responding in kind. Having acknowledged that Aguero and Jesus are lacking confidence he dismisses one to the bench and the other subed confuses things further. I personally think Aguero just doesn't care and that is deflected in his play. And it is pep that is upsetting him. Troubling times for pep me thinks.

And aguero owners, me included. Dodged a bullet with luaku zeeo return as armband was on Aguero. Not much in the way of forwards out there. When vardy exits the woods then maybe or Lacazette could twist me arm. Time will tell but thinking hold for now

That late goal may cover up a lot, I think something will give with Aguero soon, he's too good to be treated as a sub.
(K)ane surely punishes both regardless today.

You would think absolutely... but how many times have we seen early redults buck thr trend for that to continue through Sunday and Monday if needs be. A kane no show would not surorise me in the least. Strange game this

That laye goal prolongs city agony further.

It is clear the players are not buying into pep anymore. They are more rattled now than at any time last year. That late goal saved their blushes for sure.

I watched the everton game and city had no urgency. No one trying bar one or two. Sterling was the standout player. Not like aguero kdb ot even jesus to stop caring.

Bottom line is Pep is on the ropes and his team are not behind him. Jesus must be thinking what have I done signing for this mottly lot!!

I'm not sure how you can watch Aguero play and think he doesn't care. He has completely transformed his game and is doing all the grafting and selfless stuff that's asked of him now.

I'm sure pep knows exactly what he wants. Whether it's realistic is the question. He seems to be being too clever by half but wouldn't be surprised if they start clicking big time soon.
Could hold Aguero for pool but no guarantee he starts and he doesn't look the fpl gem he was anymore. Loads of good options to replace. Kane lukaku firmino lacazette vardy Morata king Abraham mounie gabbiadini

Personally I dont like what Pep has done to Kun, leave him goalhang if he wants, he scores at will when he's up there!
Build a team around one of the best strikers in the world is my thinking!

Pep prefers players to adapt to systems rather than adapting systems to players. He's an ultra modern manager and wants different things from his 9. Sucks for fpl 🙁

That, for me, is why he is not a great manager. Play to your players' strengths and build a team - of course develop players, but don't take away what they are good at.

      2. diesel001
        • 8 Years

I think part of City's issue is Aguero's 'transformation'. He is a finisher - feed him. Also think City should work on set pieces - when you have KDB on set pieces then you need Kompany, Otamendi and Mendy to get on the end of things.

        1. Get up ya bum
          • 15 Years

I'd tend to agree. Play to your best players strengths. I can see the other argument though and when a pep system is running smoothly through the gears it's a beautiful sight.

      3. Team Bobcat
        • 7 Years

I think he cares about city but there is somerhing ckearly holding him back. Maybe something in his personal life. I dont know what.

But if aguero is doing exactly as pep says grafting and the like not much of a reward on the bench.

That can only diminish any hope he has even further.

I think aguero is a professional who cares of course. As for other forwards....

        That is another debate

      Foster - Myhill
      Jones - Bavies - Cedric - Naughton - Mbemba
      Mkhi - Pogba - Mane - Eriksen - Alli
      Jesus - Chicarito - Calvert-Lewin

Myhill to get rid of the benching headache. That midfield will score you a shedload of points. Plus a solid defence.

Too confused for my taste - you need to decide your 5 or 6 big hitters and build around them - you have 7 big price tags (Alonso in with that) and it tends to water down each other. You seem to be trying to get it all - defence, mids and forwards but not quite getting there ... but on the other hand could be a great differential team

Not feeling good about this team at all. What transfer should I make ahead of next week?

    Foster
    Kolasinac | Dann | Bertrand
    Willian | Alli | KDB | Mkhi
    Lukaku | Chicharito | Mounie

    Elliot | Ake | Long | Carroll

Dann to Dawson/Maguire maybe? Or KDB to Mane/Salah. It's not too bad, you have the foundation for a good team there

    Fabianski
    Alonso, vertonghon, Valencia, Naughton
    de bruyne, Tadic, phillips
    Chicarito, Kane, lukaku

    Elliot, Cork, RLC , hegazi

That's how I line up after the international break, how much will KDB drop? I'd quite like to wait and see if Sanchez stays and bring him in for the Bournemouth fixture..

If you wait you may need to wc. Could easily drop .3 as people panic and offload him.

I went Eriksen last week to at least have the option.

That defence needs surgery. I think Tadic needs to go more than KDB does. Phillips could come good but I wouldn't want him as my 3rd mid. I'd WC personally.

Will Abraham still start when Llorente returns?

That's what I'm wondering. Ayew looks a better bet, played 90 mins every game so far, and Swansea looking fairly decent so far

I think Bony is coming in and Llorente will be sold.

And yes, I think Abraham starts.

I think Llorente starts with Ayew, Tammy on after 65 minutes for Llorente.

If Llorente leaves and Bony joins, Tammy starts with Ayew whilst Bony takes 5 games to get match fit from the bench

Is anything obvious glaring out during the IB?

    Foster
    Cedric Hegazi Jones Alonso
    Rambo Mkhi Erik
    Kane Lukaku Chich

    Elliot Chalobah TFM Carroll

TFM the only weak link I can see. That's a really good starting 11 though!

Yeah, I'm regretting bringing him in now. Can't bring myself to waste a FT on him just yet though. I've got £0.0 ITB.

Fair enough, plenty of options in that price bracket though like Lowe/Schindler, Naughton, Suttner. If he's your 5th defender it's not too important though, at least he's starting every game

Don't personally like double WBA (prefer to see Bavies), but otherise it is a very good team IMO.

Thanks Diesel, that means a lot coming from you and your lofty OR! I know what you mean but I couldn't fit him in. I WC'd last week and I think Bavies was in right until the last minute. The only thing I could potentially do is downgrade Alonso to spread the funds across the defence but I'm not keen on losing him.

Solid, would sell Hegazi for another 4.5 defender and rotate your two 4.5 defenders and two 4.5 mids for the 11th starting position, based on difficulty of fixtures

Thoughts on this team if I decided to WC?

    Foster (Elliot)
Alonso - Jones - Cedric - Trippier (Naughton)
Eriksen - Mkhi - Ramsey - Atsu (Caroll)
    Kane - Kaku (Abraham)

Also have 1 ITB to upgrade anyone if necessary

Any ideas on how to get Alonso in this?

    Foster / Elliot
    Daniels / Jones / Cedric / Mee / Mbemba
    Salah / Eriksen / Mhiki / Mooy / Carroll
    Kane / Kaku / Chica

Very good team IMO. Don't like Mooy personally (average player in a crap team), but otherwise it is good. Could downgrade Kaku (get in Pogba for Mooy and Alonso for Mee)?

As much as I love Arsenal, I hate Arsene Wenger. That man is the limit to the "ego" a person can have.

When you look at the team sheet, the thrashing was inevitable. I don't understand how can a manager with 20 years of experience at the top level even think of putting out a team like that !? It is astonishing. I know we keep saying its the same Arsenal every year but its been 3 games into the new season and there has been no effing improvement at all !

Even Carragher, Thierry, G. Neville and P. Neville were shocked for the team he decided to go with !

Moreover, he wants to sell Mustafi (a German International CB starter) to another team? Like WTF are you doing?

I see all the more worries surrounding this club and yet again its going to be a panic summer window for Arsene. I have lost all faith with this club till that man sits at the helm.

Arsenal options to be completely ignored for however long. I am not going to pick any player in the FPL even going forward.
