The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 12

Paul Pogba’s impact on his return has been instant, both on Manchester United and on Fantasy managers.

His double-figure return from a goal and assist against Newcastle United helped spark a revived attacking performance from Jose Mourinho’s side.

He set up Anthony Martial’s equaliser and reinvigorated Romelu Lukaku to snap a seven-match drought in a United shirt.

Pogba was cited as the inspiration for United’s devastating early season form and now, with the Frenchman back in the fold, we can only hope that Mourinho’s side will rekindle their relentless goal scoring exploits of the first five Gameweeks.

There are some who required little encouragement to invest in Pogba’s influence.

Having dropped back to his initial valuation of 8.0, he is already the top transfer target in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), claiming 55,000 new owners at the time of writing.

While impressive against the Magpies, this seems classic knee-jerk material, particularly with United’s fixtures soon stiffening and managers eyeing up a potential exit for Lukaku from Gameweek 14.

Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata will doubtless be the target as the striker’s replacement, with Spaniard doing little to put that trade in jeopardy with today’s performance at West Brom.

His eighth goal of the season, and fifth on his travels, took him to the top of the FPL forward standings.

Indeed, United’s rebirth as an attacking force coincided with another convincing display from Chelsea in which Morata and, in particular, Eden Hazard again sparkled.

Pushed up in a central role in tandem with the striker, the Belgian is beginning to convince as a midfield heavy-hitter.

But unlike Morata, Hazard remains on the periphery of our thinking.

Part of just 5% of squads, his net ownership actually dropped ahead of today’s 18-point haul as he struggles to convince managers to make him part of their plans.

Even now, hours after his Hawthorns performance, Pogba, Leroy Sane and Mohamed Salah are all enjoying greater transfer traffic than a player who amassed 224 points last season – Hazard’s third tally over 200 points in his five-season FPL career.

Maybe our standards and expectations have altered.

While Morata can be eased into our line-ups in a swap for one of the rotating Man City strikers or a stuttering Harry Kane and Lukaku, Hazard requires major surgery in an area of our squads well served by cheaper and more consistent performers.

The aforementioned Salah continues to run riot, producing 16 points to top the overall standings. Sane, meanwhile, kept ticking over with an assist in Man City’s victory at the King Power Stadium.

Pogba has rapidly rejoined this contingent of midfielders threatening to better the likes of Hazard and certainly Alexis Sanchez, as our perception of what constitutes a midfield heavy-hitter is challenged.

I don’t doubt that Hazard will have more to say on this but, for now, it’s Pogba’s potential that has convinced Fantasy managers to act.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Who would you rather lose for Pogba; Sterling or Eriksen?

Sterling because of minutes, especially over Christmas

You're looking at it the oppposite way. Sterling is a rotation risk when fixtures aren't close together. When they are close together (like over Christmas) then everyone is a rotation risk. Therefore Sterling becomes a good pick 🙂

We shouldn't avoid rotation over Christmas, we should get players form teams that have strength in depth as they will fare better.

Eriksen will always get more minutes then Sterling over the next 5 or 6 GWs, but he is more expensive so if you crunch the numbers it probably makes no difference I guess.
Personally I think over the Xmas period its probably betetr to avoid teams like City and have some weaker teams like Watford who really dont have many other options to choose from other than to play Richarlison etc. Need a balanced squad and good picks I guess. Like Morata will be a safer pick then Jesus or Kun and he will get more minutes

Perhaps you have, but you need to have a look at the fixtures a little closer. Quite a few teams only have 2 days rest between games and some even have just the one day.

Teams with big, strong squads are going to be much better prepared than the likes of Watford, unfortunately.

I was answering the original question based purely on value. Sterling can be a fire and forget player at 8m. His PPG will average 5-6 when he does play. Eriksen is a little expensive for his returns at the moment. Brilliant player, but if the OP wants Pogba then Eriksen of the two, should go.

I'd say Eriksen btw. 9.6m is an awful lot compared with Salah and the Man City midfielders, plus Pogba, Martial etc.

What is Man United's order of preference for CBs? Something like this?

    1) Jones
    2) Smalling
    3) Bailly
    4) Lindelof*
    5) Blind*
    6) Tuanzebe*

    *irrelevant really

And where does Rojo come in this order would you say? Obviously no one knows for sure at present but what would your guess be?

    1. Deeney-is-a-god
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 11 months ago

Bailly is probably on the top, then jones, smalling and the rest. Jones has been the best CB this season, but overall bailly edges it, and I think Mourinho trust him more, due to jones being injured a lot and Mourinho bought Bailly

Rojo is hard to place, but if he picks up where he left off he is a man that could mail down a starting spot.

i think Bailly in front of Smalling, and really, Uniteds defence is all but one guy, Jones. He is by far their best defender (not counting DDG, but he is obviously a very good goalie ofc). I don´t rate Bailly, as i think he is ill-disciplined, rashy, and has questionable positional awareness (which is why he works with jones as the latter is so good in organizing and structuring defense lines). Smalling was a talented defender, but has too mant flaws to be recognised as a top class defender (imagine if he played instead of Lovren for example..) Not better than Lovren in my opinion. The other ones are not cbs (Tuanzebe might become one but not atm) and that includes Lindeløf which i rather think is a right back in mould.

    1 FT, 0.2 itb

Nothing pressing, just waiting for news on Jones.
    Three questions though:

    2) Next week, which one to downgrade from Kane Lukaku(after he plays Brighton) to make money to use to upgrade Mbemba to a Chelsea def?

My current team for next week:
    Speroni
    Azpil - Duffy - Ake
    Mahrez - Gross - Alli - Rich - Salah
    Kun - Kane
    Elliot ,Jones, Ladapo, Mbemba

Dont really want to ditch any of my midfield, even Mahrez looked good today. Ship Kane or Kun or both out?

Pleased Baines is taking pens again. He's good at them and deserves to take them. Lukaku decided he was better at taking them initially - he clearly wasn't. Mirallas was merely a spoilt thief and this season Rooney has robbed. Hope he doesn't get them back when Everton next get one with both players on the pitch. Baines is too nice for his own good, he should put his foot down.

Baines is going right under that radar. Don't we all dream of a penalty taking defender?

Who can also keep clean sheets which Baines doesn't.

Yeah, it would be the dream if Everton remember how to defend.

This. Can't rely on soft penalties either - I waited weeks last season, all the while Coleman was getting goals and assists each game.

If they had a sniff of a clean sheet yeah. But they have decent fixtures and still they don't look like keeping one.

Baines gave them to Lukaku to boost his confidence when in a goal scoring slump. Unless I dreamed that. Baknes is too pricey for a defender that doesn't get clean sheets. The attacking returns should be a bonus, no?

Thing is a goal is like a CS and bonus, so until Everton start keeping CS, I don't think he's worth 6m.

    Thoughts on the following

    Lossl
    Daniels Azpi Mee Ward (Mmemba)
    Pogba Hazard Silva Sterling (Chalaboah)
    Kane Morata (Niasse)

Would shift between 442 and 343

    Requires axing the following:

    Trapper, Fellaini, Rashford

Chelsea have amazing fixtures until end of February after next week at Liverpool.
I took a hit last week to get in Morata and Hazard. I'm also considering getting in Azpiliqueta and going for triple chelsea.

But if Chelsea show the same form as today i don't mind the double up at all 🙂

I think this week was quite predictable result and points-wise, so they've probably done ok. I've seen a 75 and 92 by wildcarders.

Andy was slightly less successful. I think he completely fell for the big 3 up front trap, even though I advised against it in the wildcard thread.

Does flagging actually achieve anything though other than getting a comment or string of comments removed ? The problem still remains with serial idiotic posters who remain free to post as they don't actually cross that dividing line . Tricky one I know but ttust me they genuinely are ruining this place.

This is the sad thing TM. T & C 's are what they are but they can only cover strict rules. Outside of that general "dickhead and juvenile" comments are acceptable and that is what annoys so many. I appreciate that a down vote button is a dangerous thing but surely there has to be some form of censure against idiots ? Yourself and Mark get this but how can this situation be changed for the better ?
