Scout Notes – Salah Stars In Thriller

A thriller at Anfield has a huge impact on Fantasy ranks, while a rather more low-key draw is played out at Selhurst Park.

Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah went into Liverpool’s meeting with Spurs as two of the top three captaincy picks of Gameweek 26 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

By the end of an extraordinary 2-2 draw, there was little doubt as to who emerged as the victor in Fantasy terms.

Salah hit two goals and took maximum bonus for a 15-point haul and his third double-digit score in the last six Gameweeks.

In contrast, Kane scored one penalty and missed another to bring in just four points for the 17.3% of managers who handed him the armband.

Salah, who was captained by 13.1%, now has either a goal or an assist in 15 of the last 17 Gameweeks and it is his consistency that sets him apart from Kane – and every other player in FPL.

While the Spurs striker has produced returns in 12 of 25 matches this season, the Egyptian has prospered in 19, and his stellar output today will have made a big difference for those who trusted him with the armband, which included just 15 of the top 100 FPL managers.

Indeed, Salah’s haul looks set to have a significant impact on ranks and mini-leagues in light of Sergio Aguero’s blank at Burnley. The Man City striker was captained by 39 of the top 100 managers.

Some 400,000 moved for Aguero over the last two Gameweeks following his 17-point tally against Newcastle. Many of those managers doubtless made up some of the 949,000+ who handed the Man City striker the armband at Turf Moor, only to witness Salah’s brace on Sunday.

The question now is whether we can continue to overlook Salah for the captaincy and, if not, what impact that has on Kane and Aguero in squads.

Liverpool’s schedule certainly strengthens Salah’s appeal as the Reds face just two of the top eight – away at Man United (GW30) and Chelsea (GW37) – over the remaining 12 Gameweeks of the season.

Jurgen Klopp’s side is also one of only four teams to definitely have a Gameweek 31 match, when they host Watford, although FA Cup fifth round results could add further fixtures to the schedule.

That could be enough to persuade Roberto Firmino’s 39.4% ownership to hold, even though today’s blank means he has scored just twice in the last six Gameweeks.

Liverpool’s defence remains unconvincing, however, with one clean sheet in six and assured starts for precious few of their backline, with Klopp bringing in Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold for Joel Matip and the injured Joe Gonez today.

Spurs struggled to repel the home side in the first half, but a tactical change at the interval – along with a tiring Liverpool midfield – enabled Dele Alli to push further forward and the visitors became considerably more threatening as a result.

Victor Wanyama levelled the match with a superb strike before Kane had a penalty saved by Loris Karius and Salah punished that miss with what looked to be an injury-time winner, only for van Dijk’s foul on Erik Lamela to hand the Spurs striker a shot at redemption that he emphatically took.

The forward bettered Salah for shots (five to four) and attempts in the box (four to three) and is another who should benefit from a decent run-in – Spurs play only three of the top seven from now until the end of the season.

That could spark renewed interest in key assets who struggled for impact in recent weeks, with Christian Eriksen’s goal against Man United the only notable return from Spurs midfield ‘big three’ of the Dane, Alli and Son Heung-min.

Son has now blanked for three successive Gameweeks and Alli has only two assists from his last five starts.

Draw suits dogged Newcastle

Newcastle will have come away far happier with the 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace than their hosts, who out-shot the Magpies 21-11 and had 15 attempts in the box to the visitors’ six.

But a 23rd-minute Mohamed Diame goal, from Ayoze Perez’s assist, and some backs-to-the-wall defending secured Rafa Benitez’s men a point despite a second-half onslaught from the Eagles.

Luka Milivojevic (4.7) scored the equaliser from the penalty spot after a foul on Christian Benteke, and for all Palace’s huffing and puffing to find a winner, they still only mustered four efforts on target. Newcastle, by contrast, forced Wayne Hennessey into seven saves.

The goal was Milivojevic’s fourth in the last eight Gameweeks, making him the highest-scoring sub-5.0 midfielder.

That didn’t stop 30% of his 266,000 ownership benching him for the Newcastle encounter and, despite his form and potential from the spot, the Serbian could suffer more of the same as Palace embark on a brutal run (eve TOT MUN che hud LIV) over the next six Gameweeks.

Benteke will at least go into that set of fixtures in good form. His assist means he’s produced points for five successive Gameweeks now and has two goals and five assists over his last eight appearances.

Wilfried Zaha started up front due to Bakary Sako’s season-ending injury in midweek, but he switched back to the wing as Palace gained second-half momentum, with James McArthur moved centrally behind Benteke.

Change was also afoot at the back, although not through design by coach Roy Hodgson, who was forced to introduce the fit-again Mamadou Sakho when Martin Kelly succumbed to a hamstring problem just before the break.

That makes it seven regular starters now injured at Palace which, coupled with that horrendous run, won’t inspire many of us to be investing in Eagles assets for now.

Their fixtures do ease for the last six Gamweeks of the season, however.

Newcastle players offer even less Fantasy appeal.

Up front, they’ve not scored more than once for seven straight matches and in defence, they’ve failed to keep a clean sheet in four – and the consecutive shut-outs they managed before that were their first since Gameweek 9.

Perez (5.2), at least, has upped his consistency. He’s started four of the last five matches and has scored or assisted in all but one of them.

But the likes of Jordan Ayew and Callum Wilson offer far more appeal in that price bracket, particularly as eight of Newcastle’s remaining 12 opponents are top-half teams.

    Shameless repost from this morning.

Think this week is a crucial point in the season in terms of how we set our teams up for the future. With BGWs, new signings over transfer window, CL and Cups all coming into play, there are lots to ponder. There is also some crucial fixture swings upcoming. With that in mind I've done a quick summary of potential invest-ability of different teams.

Arsenal - Two very challenging fixtures next but relatively plain sailing after that. 4 favourable home fixtures GW30-35 should see lots of goals and attacking returns.

Bournemouth - 6 favourable fixtures in next 7. Good recent form, averaging 2 goals per game in their last 7 matches. Still poor defensively, but good attacking bargains to be had with Ibe, Wilson, etc.

Brighton - One of the toughest run ins of any team. Haven't capitalised on recent favourable fixtures and leaking goals. Also struggling for goals. Best avoided.

Burnley - Have a great run all the way to the end of the season, Chelsea and Arsenal matches aside. Have had a tough recent run of fixtures but have shown they can still be solid at the back and have some of the best CS prospects for the rest of the year.

Chelsea - A extended favourable run of fixtures is coming to an end. They still face United, City, Spurs and Pool. Champions League will complicate things in terms of rotation/injury. Relatively good last 6 fixtures, by which time they might not have cup competitions to worry about. Intermittent form in front of goal is also a worry.

Crystal Palace - Very tough short/mid term fixtures before a favourable run-in. Poor defensively in general. Interest probably limited to midfield enablers McCarthur and Milivojevic. Good chance of not blanking GW31 in their favour.

Everton - Big Sam honeymoon period has come to an end, but promising fixtures until seasons end, GW32-33 home matches vs City and Pool aside. No blank GW31. Defence struggling for CS form and being rotated, Pickford best option going forward. Walcott will prove most popular attacker with few other viable options in mid/fwd.

Huddersfield - Good fixtures until GW35, hugely challenging run in from there. Destined to be in relegation trouble, their next 4 home GWs (Bou, Swa, Cpl, Wat) will be crucial and could see some CS returns for managers looking for budget defenders. Likely non-blank GW31. Can't score goals.

Leicster - Well documented favourable run-in. Mahrez situation complicates things could dent hope in their attacking returns, although Vardy should bring in points. Value defenders available, despite rotation, but patchy CS from over the season.

Liverpool - Overall a very good run in which should see lots of attacking returns. CL might pose some problems with minutes managed, potential injuries. Rotation still a worry defensively, but good home form suggests plenty of CS out there. Non-blank GW31.

Man City - Runaway leaders but becoming slightly problematic. Cups, CL, poor CS form and switching of focus away from the PL may see some diminishing returns. Rotation at CB looks imminent. Fixtures are among the worst of popular teams. 4 last easy fixtures on paper may be more difficult than appears as PL title will be wrapped up by then and teams fighting to stay up may be more resilient than usual. Kun, Sterling, KDB look solid still.

Man Utd - Pretty difficult fixtures, with on average a Top 6 team faced every second or third game until seasons end. CL also to deal with. Midfield becoming difficult to predict with every Pogba benched this week. Should remain solid defensively. Still plenty of opportunities for 4-0 wins before end of the season.

Newcastle - Tough run in with no extended run of favourable fixtures left. Relegation looms and hard to see any worthwhile investment.

Southampton - GW 28-32 look promising before a tough run-in. Decent form with JWP and Stephens providing unlikely attacking returns, this pair could prove profitable short term value. Struggling for CS though.

Spurs - Overall good fixtures after GW 28. Good CS prospects with Toby expected back soon also. Team very capable of hauling but Son, Alli minutes may be under threat. CL and cups to navigate.

Stoke - 3 good fixtures left before things turn tougher. No blank GW 31. Defence has steadied a little but still dangerous to invest in. Some cheap popular mids such as Shaq and ECM but the time to invest was probably a few weeks ago.

Swansea - Good form and fixtures despite being poor team overall. J Ayew one of the best 3rd striker choices. Mawson could get returns at both ends, while Naughton looks one of the better 4.5 options in defence.

Watford - Form has fallen away considerably with some tough fixtures still to come. Best avoided, especially the defence, despite their attractive yellow jerseys.

West Brom - Relegation battle but good fixtures until GW34 and relatively decent defensive form. Hegazi a potential goal and CS threat for a cheap price.

West Ham - Tough fixtures upcoming and really struggling to keep CS. Arnie and Lanzini out hasn't helped recent form, but overall best avoided.

    Christensen replacement?

    A) Davies- great fixtures after Arsenal and Rose is injured. Could be a steal. Goal involvement potential

    B) Mawson- great fixtures and a threat. Had him last year and was great. Got three goals from him.

    C) Daniels- Cheaper than all options and served me well early on. Bournemouth struggling for clean sheets.

    D) Dawson- A goal threat and good fixtures. Poor form though

What does one do with Mahrez? He has great fixs after City game, tempted to sell for Mikhi if his head is not right and will be missing for a couple more games
    Should i keep him?

Gotta get this off my chest..

What a weak penalty by Kane. Seriously. Your team has a shot of winning at a pinnacle time of the match, 3 points could be sewn, your main rival of top 4. What do you do? A weak shot straight to the middle. Against freaking Karius. Apart from that, your touch and play the whole game was exhaustive. You'll never be considered as the great strikers. Aubameyang will show you what true strikers do in big games.

It was a poor penalty and performance but it's one game. Kane has made the difference in lots of big games.

Calm down. If the penalty goes in, no one bats an eyelid. Straight down the middle is a common penalty technique.

Anything I can do to improve the team?

  24. Monkey Hanger

A couple of GW's back my plan was to improve by 17k a week, for the last 14 GW's, and win the overall in the final week.

Now that has been put on hold. New strategy is to improve by 36k a week, for the final 12 GW's, but again to win in the final week.

At what point would you consider my goal to be a little unattainable?

Do you think I should maybe consider just trying for a top 100 finish instead?
