Frisking The Fixtures – Gameweek Fifteen

Clear your slates, pull out your “Season Ticker” and prepare for a whistle stop analysis of those sides that can look forward to calm and choppy waters courtesy of the Premier League fixture computer…

The Highs…

Liverpool
While Roy Hodgson’s side are lacking the considerable drive of Steven Gerrard from midfield, they dominated lowly West Ham on Saturday and will go into their next bank of fixtures with some confidence. Those fixtures look remarkably kind after Gameweek 15’s trip to White Hart Lane. This weekend will be a huge test of Liverpool’s progress but, following that, Anfield clashes with Villa, Fulham and Wolves – all sides currently struggling for form, appear to give Hodgson’s outfit the a platform to make progress and for the likes of Paul Konchesky, Glen Johnson and particularly Fernando Torres, to blink brightly on our Fantasy Radars.

Blackburn
Rovers have won three of their last four and have scored no less than 8 goals in that run, while Sunday’s win over Villa brought a first clean sheet in six. Sam Allardyce’s side have form then and now also have a set of forthcoming fixtures to push on further. They need to get a daunting Old Trafford trip out of the way this coming Gameweek, but can then find comfort in Ewood Park encounters against Wolves, West Ham and Stoke over the four that follow. Watch for Chris Samba, Morten Gamst Pedersen and even David Dunn once Gameweek 15 is out of the way.

Sunderland
For weeks on end Sunderland had to bear the brunt of my aspersions in this article, as they were constantly cast in the midst of an awful spell of fixtures. That ends here. Besides a game away at Old Trafford in a month’s time (a game which Darren Bent scored a brace in last season), opponents really begin to soften up for Steve Bruce’s side. Home games with West Ham, Bolton and Blackpool in the next six promise to bring profits, while trips to Wolves and Fulham also look far from daunting. Darren Bent is finally getting some help with the goalscoring stakes and he and the record signing Asamoah Gyan who will be most appealing to Fantasy Managers, although Danny Welbeck’s brace last night would have raised some eyebrows. Sunderland also have something to offer defensivley however, with Craig Gordon a budget keeper option and Michael Turner in front of him, a reliable lynchpin. The injury to Titus Bramble, announced by Steve Bruce last night, does cast doubt over a reshuffled back four however.

West Brom
Not only are West Brom sliding down the table but they’re in frankly awful form right now – one point from their last five tells the tale. The only bright spark on the horizon is the calendar of games in front of them that gives them a good chance to rectify their recent slump. Their next three home fixtures (NEW, WOL, BLA) will be key matches and Roberto Di Matteo must get results from these. Peter Odemwingie has taken the mantle of chief penalty taker and continues to impress and is a cheap option at only £5.1m. Once fit, Chris Brunt at £5.7m seems to offer the most assurances, while those looking for budget defenders can at least gain regular game-time from Gonzalo Jara and Gabriel Tamas.

Also to consider: Bolton – we mentioned that you needed a Bolton player in last week’s Frisking and so it turned out. The Trotters continue to have an easy time of it in weeks to come so this particular horse has far from bolted. Everton – three home games in the next six against West Brom, Wigan and Birmingham all promise returns. Fulham – struggled against City but Craven Cottage encounters with Birmingham, Sunderland and West Ham offer the platform for a recovery and mid-price returns. Man City – the next two against in-form Stoke and Bolton will be tough but they look the most testing couple of fixtures in the next six for City. Wolves – form is stuttering but the Wanderers do have a rather handy set of fixtures (SUN, bla, BIR, wba, WIG) to give Mick McCarthy the opportunity to turn the ship around.

The Lows…

Chelsea
Carlo Ancelotti’s men have seemed to hit a brick wall of late. The Blues have only won one of their last four fixtures with just a single goal – coming from the scarcely selected combination of Michael Essien and Salomon Kalou. The next five fixtures for the Blues sees them travel to St. James’ Park, White Hart Lane and The Emirates, throw in tough home games against Everton and United and it’s obvious that Chelsea are now feeling the pinch from their easy opening to the season. Heavy investment in the expensive duo of Didier Drogba (£13m) and Florent Malouda (£10.3m) will certainly see plenty of questions raised about value for money, with the likes of Carlos Tevez and Tim Cahill looking tempting alternatives. Likewise, those who own budget busting defender Ashley Cole (£8.4m) off the back of one clean sheet in five, will surely be assessing their options.

Arsenal
The Gunners are in a bit of a pickle right now, form at home seems hard to come by having lost to both Newcastle and Spurs in their most recent fixtures. Successive victories on the road against Wolves and Everton have however, kept them afloat. In theory, Arsene Wenger’s side should dispose of Fulham and Stoke who arrive at the Emirates next, but such is the home form, you can’t necessarily take returns in those games for granted. Forthcoming away fixtures meanwhile, look far more testing. Trips to Villa and United come next and following that run, the Gunners will host Chelsea. Investors need be cautious then, although there’s argument to say that a certain Cesc Fabregas is a fixture proof proposition.

Aston Villa
Gerard Houllier has inherited a side with a truly bright future ahead of them but, unfortunately, the short-term brings a slew of fixtures which can only be described by one word – tricky. Gameweek’s 17 and 18 offer some comfort (WBA and wig) but the opponents around that spell all currently have aspirations near the top of the table (ARS, liv, TOT mcy). Bargain buy Marc Albrighton remains the most selected Villa asset at 8.4% ownership. Given his price, his owners might want to hold firm but there seems little appeal within the rest of Houllier’s squad.

Be wary of: Newcastle – Chris Hughton’s men seem to have taken a mantle that Wigan will happily hand over, they’ve become consistently inconsistent and are hard to nail down. Investors in Carroll won’t be looking to jump ship any time soon, but beyond that tread lightly. Blackpool – much like Carroll before him, Charlie Adam will probably have to do very little for quite a while before people consider offloading, he offers extreme value, but buying into Blackpool looks a risk right now. West Ham – They’re in poor form, they’re bottom of the table and they’re fixtures are not good. It’s as simple as that.

seems to suggest that carroll for tevez would be a positive move after next week but should i try and beat the imminent price rises and do it this week at a 4 point hit

Carroll looks a bit fixture proof and if you got him for 5 I still think he is great value to keep and bench if necessary.

i didnt get him for 5 it would only cost me 0.3 if i was looking to get him back in, but surely tevez is a great option with man citys promising upcoming fixtures, and hes definitely coming in either this week or next, its just who do i take out torres or carrol

and the fixtures point at carroll

I'll be playing Carroll Vs Chelsea this GW. Chelsea away has been poor & not sure if I'd go as far to say he's fixture proof but at the mo he's in my starting XI every week.

After Rafael's performance for Utd on Saturday, what are your opinions on him becoming first choice right back or will he still be subject to rotation against better teams?

Very risky! I've been thinking about getting shot of Drogba (my frustration with him is becoming too much) and bringing in Rooney. It would give me some funds to strengthen too, but I don't trust his form. He can only get better though.

on fantasy tools there are two seperate columns (one to signify his percentage if he is protected and the other if he ain't) so when peeps say that fantasy tools have someone protected they are nearly always wrong. unless u know for a fact that someone is protected then i wud always discount the minimum and get ure target in if u can't afford the rise or if a change of tack is likely to scupper ure future plans

Newcastle without Centre backs so Chelsea might be in the goals.

havent been on all weekend lads, sifting through the debris of a mad weekend and realised an 8 point hit i took last weekend actually worked out. That's as rare as a hen's tooth.

arteta carr drogba out, vidic, fabs, davies in.

Ching ching. Only climbed 40 odd thousand places though and still 160k when i was in the top 6k fourweeks ago, but progress i suppose.

It's been a long time since my forward line read 6 16 16. Very satisfying. Probably get VDV in now this week. The incident where i was Alonso'd has definitely cost me the guts of 40 points.

    That is all 🙂

Seriously? How can you not know?!

Basically, before the Tottenham-Sunderland game in midweek a couple of weeks ago (the game where we knew we'd have the teamsheets before the FPL deadline) some guy called Alonso14 posted a fake Tottenham team (as well as Sunderland team and subs, so it looked legit) that didn't have Bale or VDV in it... Then the site crashed a couple of minutes later so it was the only 'teamsheet' that anyone saw on here. So a few people based their transfer decisions on that, i.e. not bringing VDV in.

    Options for transfers:

    a) Torres > Tevez
    b) Malouda/Gyan > Tevez/Nzogbia
    c) Malouda/Gyab > Balotali/van der Vaart
    d) None of the above

Looking for a little advice here lads. On paper my team looks good, but just not getting any luck this season. What should I consider changing?

    Foster – Hahnemann
    Jagielka – Konchesky – Kolarov – Elmo – Jara
    Nasri – Malouda – Bale – Nani – Adam
    Drogba – Carroll – Chamakh

Elmo definitely... barely plays these days
Chamakh might be under pressure from RvP soon too

      possibly
      Drogba/Elmo >> Tevez/Vidic?

I agree with the Elmo transfer. But maybe not that urgent?

Drogba looked the most influencial at the weekend for Chelsea and should have scored. I think he is still a keeper.

Chamakh look likes the transfer to me, RVP came on as a subat the weekend, should be back starting soon. Considering the popular Elmander to replace, but I may have missed the boat on this one.

        Sadly not Evasivo. 1.9 short.

Considering Malouda to Fabs. Leaves me with 7.9 to replace Nasri.

Or Chamakh to Elmander, Bale to VDV

This is what I'm trying to establish - which of those two will guarantee minutes over the 6 weeks that Bramble is out?

I have onuoha but looking to downgrade to a cheaper member of the backline to free some funds.

I see Bardsley has been getting minutes lately, wondering how the reshuffle might affect the lineup.

Heres my team as it stands:

    Hart (Foster)
    Konchesky | Vidic | Jones | Coleman | Alcaraz
    VdV | Nani | Jarvis | Fabregas | Barton
    Drogba | Carroll | Elmander

Thinking of either getting rid of Alcaraz for a Sunderland defender or to wait a week and then replace Barton with Gamst-Pedersen.

What transfers would you suggest as the most urgent?

Just wonder if Drogba will play, with Anelka out I am thinking he might. I have Alex and Bougherra, so only need to make 1 or 2 changes, might make more seems as you have afforded me the opportunity! It would be rude not to!

I've gone for Ibra for Muller up front, he's on form at the moment and Milan need a win so the transfer seems plausable.

no idea yet, have 4 players not playing.
        Vidic,Bougherra,Hernandez and Higuain.

Wanted to get Anelka in, to afford Bale and Ivanovic. Bremen is in really poor form and I can see Tottenham score many. Ivanovic in defence looks safe. Might take a 4 point hit.
Need to find another striker now.

In the interest of sportsmanship, is there any chance that all Arteta owners could donate their BPs from last night to the deserving Cahill owners?!

I just send a huge email to FPL moaning about the BPs, not because I think they'll change anything (from last night or in the system itself) but I needed to vent my anger to someone. The whole system detracts from the game when certain players are guaranteed to get BPs as soon as they step on the pitch, purely because they've made more passes than other players. I also linked several match reports in my email, all of which rate Cahill's performance significantly higher than Arteta's, who is criticised by many reports, and on Everton forums.

I take this game too seriously. Fact.

Granville (or someone) was saying last night that Pienaar actually had more touches of the ball and made more passes last night.

Probably... I know I had a go it him halfway through the game for being overrated, but I thought he was brilliant last night. I would have absolutely no complaints if he got the 3 BPs ahead of Cahill, none at all.

It's a shame that Pienaar doesn't seem to know how to shoot at the moment... He was in decent shooting positions plenty of times last night, and he didn't have a single shot from memory. It was like watching Arsenal.... Perhaps that's what Pienaar is trying to achieve? Perhaps he wants to move to Arsenal on a free at the end of the season?

Anyone know what the deal is with Pienaar's contract? Are Everton not offering him enough money, or does he want to leave regardless? Shame if it's the first, because no one could argue that he doesn't deserve at least parity with Heitinga, who is undoubtedly on a monster wage (in Everton terms).

You are right. Arteta did not deserve any BPs last night.

Some "BP Darlings" seem to alway get BPs regardless of how they play:
      Arteta
      Fabregas
      Carroll
      Bale
      VdV
Jara (a defender, loses 3-0 at home and get 2 BPs!)
