The Burning Question: Can Gylfi Sigurdsson Replicate his Form at Spurs?

Our next Burning Question article focuses on one of last season’s surprise packages, the Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson. The former Reading man was snapped up on loan from Hoffenheim by Swansea during the January transfer window and promptly made a mockery of his 5.0 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, scoring seven goals and assisting three more while playing in “the hole” behind Danny Graham. His formidable displays took Fantasy managers and Swansea’s opponents by surprise and by the end of the season the Icelandic international was hot property.

New Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, who had also managed Sigurdsson during his stint at Reading, was chief amongst the midfielder’s suitors and keen to re-unite with the playmaker once again this summer but it was Tottenham who ultimately secured him on a permanent deal in the region of £6.5m. With such attacking talents, even a FPL price hike to 9.0 and a 7.3 tag in the Sky Sports game may still represent a bargain. Already during pre-season friendlies he has scored two goals, but questions remain as to how manager Andre Villas-Boas will fit Sigurdsson and fellow attacking midfielder Rafael Van Der Vaart into the same side. During Spurs 1-1 draw with LA Galaxy and in last night’s 2-0 loss to Valencia, Sigurdsson played worryingly deep while Van Der Vaart was on the pitch, but has been utilised in an attacking role whenever the Dutch midfielder isn’t on the pitch.

Mark says…
The early signs are good. So far in pre-season it appears that Andre Villas-Boas has looked to harness Sigurdsson’s talents – I can’t help but notice that he’s immediately jumped the pecking order on set-plays. There is concern about the role that Sigurdsson will play once Luka Modric has flown the nest – something which looks inevitable. He could find himself as part of a midfield three with Rafael Van der Vaart and Gareth Bale flanking a lone striker, or worse still, deeper in a 4-2-3-1. It remains to be seen if that system will allow Sigurdsson to exert his considerable influence around the opposition’s penalty area. We’d like to think so but, with both Van der Vaart and Bale similarly priced, I wonder if Sigurdsson is the riskier option of the three right now. Certainly I’m leaning towards Bale – he seems more certain to kick-on from last season, whereas Sigurdsson set high standards at Swansea and was a key figure in a side that seemed to be bereft of direct goal threats.

Paul says…
It all depends on his game time. If Sigurdsson becomes an integral member of the Spurs first-team under Andre-Villas Boas, I see no reason as to why he can’t replicate last season’s form. When the summer transfer window closes, we’re likely to get a better idea of Villas-Boas’ intentions – he has maintained a 4-2-3-1 in pre-season with Sigurdsson mainly utilised in “the hole” but the manager has admitted that is mainly down to current personnel. A preferred 4-3-3 formation, with Sigurdsson tucked in behind a lone frontman, would replicate the Icelandic international’s role under Brendan Rodgers at Swansea and Reading and surely boost his appeal. Quite how Villas-Boas will use Rafael Van der Vaart should be key; if the Dutchman is vying for the same role as Sigurdsson, both players’ minutes could be reduced and promote Gareth Bale as the main midfield option in the Tottenham midfield for Fantasy managers. Spurs scored 66 goals last season – 22 more than Swansea – and if Sigurdsson becomes nailed-on, his creativity will be key next term. With the likes of Jan Vertonghen and Kyle Walker ideal for Villas-Boas’ high defensive line, the potential is there for the Portuguese manager to quickly draw a line under his brief spell at Chelsea last time round.

Anorak says…
Whether through the change in manager at Spurs, or the enforced absence of Rafael van der Vaart due to injury, there is certainly a new verve to the attacking midfield slot of Andre Vilas-Boas’ Tottenham side during the pre-season friendlies. Sigurdsson appears to have slotted seamlessly into a Spurs pre-season midfield without the aforementioned Dutchman and Modric, and has made himself at home picking up both an assist and a goal in the final game of that US tour (a 2-1 win over New York Red Bulls). That said, the future of both Modric and Van der Vaart is sure to have a key part to play in the potential success of Sigurdsson at Spurs – should they both start the season at White Hart Lane, then midfield spaces will be at a premium, even in the 4-2-3-1 formation likely to be adopted – one of Sigurdsson and Van der Vaart would need to be pushed wide right and, in order to maintain balance (and some semblance of width) could easily find themselves benched.

Andy says…
As the unofficial president of the Gylfi Sigurdsson fan club, this is perhaps the one question that has caused me sleepless nights in pre-season. My short answer is an unequivocal, yes. The Icelander has all the talent to succeed at this level but now that he is surrounded by the likes of Gareth Bale and Rafael Van Der Vaart – and with Emmanuel Adebayor still in the shopping list – I am a little worried he could end up sharing the spoils a little too much. I think he has more than enough ability but I’m definitely fearful of how his new team-mates will impact upon his scoring. There’s just as much a part of me that thinks having a stronger squad around him will only better his cause.

    Hi Guys, please RMT
I would really apresiate hearing your views

    Friedel/Elliot
    Zabaleta/A.Cole/hangeland (Fabio, Clyne)
    Bale/Kagawa/yaya/Ramires/Guthrie
    Torres/Tevez/Graham

I have 2m for Torres to Rooney

I'm have to have the spurs keeper fixed.
Elliot's price wont change. I'll upgrade later.

    I think I have a balanced team.

    so, what do you think....

It's decent. Don't like Freidel but it's not a big deal. Torres and Tevez are not the most reliable but it doesn't matter as long as you upgrade to Rooney. Kagawa is a punt but a decent one IMO. I would prefer Nasri over Yaya but thats personal preference.

I would only have 2 from Chelsea anyway. If I was you, I would downgrade to nzogbia because having 3 Chelsea players means if you don't want to have to bench one in GW3 then you'll have to use all your transfers up until then to get rid of your Chelsea players. That restricts you quite a bit plus Nzogbia looks in decent form and has good fixtures whereas I don't fancy Ramires to do that well.

      Don't double on united defense.

Vidic is a nice pick, but a tad too expensive for my taste. Rafael may not even start the season, and is prone to rotation.

Allen ain't a good prospect FF wise, and Liv have bad fixtures.

Dempsey might also miss gw1 (looks likely).

Pog is too tough to get out at 5.0.

Tevez is dodgy imo (but a valid punt)

Deadzone!!! A little food for thought.

    DDG/Freddy
    Ivan(Cole)/Zabaleta/Hughes/Gorkss/Tierney
    Bale/Kagawa/Toure/Ramires/Kancaniklic
    Torres/Tevez/Graham

    2.0 in bank for Rooney

My thinking is that the only risk of picking Tevez over Aguero is if you do not have a viable (C) option. Rooney certainally gives you a strong captain from GW2-5. That said, if you plan on (c) Rooney for those 3 weeks you might as well save the 2.5 million and pick tevez.

    Captian options GW 2 - 5

    Rooney - FUL/sot/WIG
    MCI - liv/QPR/sot

imo Rooney is the better (c) option collectively in those 3 GW's. This make sense?

Of course all bets are off if RVP signs at United.

That is a really strong team and looks very expensive.
I'd downgrade the 2nd keeper to a 4m and upgrade Kaca to Noble who will score a lot more points than your sub goalie at the start of the season.

I reckon De Gea will only be rotated 4/5 times a season. In this time a 4.5m keeper will likely score around 12-16 points. That 0.5m could help upgrade Kaca to Noble who'll probably score 16+ points more than him over the course of the season.

Just a quick one guys. Does anyone have a opinion on Aguero +.5 saved for Rooney GW2. Or is it not worth the extra trade, & go with Rooney from the get go?

So Rooney from start or Kun for GW1 then Rooney GW2 with additional trade?

Do you have Tevez? If you do then just get Rooney. Otherwise stick to Aguero unless you have other planned transfers in which case it may not be worth restricting yourself too much. TBH, I would keep Aguero until his form drops but the depends on if you have Tevez as well.

I do have Tevez-Torres also. The problem for me is I don't trust T-T with the (c) so would love Aguero to Captain GW1. Maybe i'll just get Roon & be done with it. Can see a massive Kun haul GW1 though with all the transfers out after CS.
        Thanks for your reply.

I also made a team with Tevez Roon Kun
but the defence is too weak, not to mention Kun get QPR in GW3, which means you will be very reluctant to upgrade to rooney

      I have been thinking about this for the past 2 weeks. I think i have settled on Graham for the following reasons;

      1. Fulham away to United in GW2 will allow me to keep a play with a 4.5 as a bench flogger.
      2. Graham is a known commodity in the Prem. Not saying that Petric will not do well, just that you know what you are getting with Graham.

Here's my latest effort after watching the CS last night.

    DDG/Fred
    Ridgewell Cuellar Fabio Hangeland Barnett
    Lamps Bale Noble Ireland McClean
    Torres Rooney Tevez
Leaves me with nothing in the Bank.

Previously I had this team before CS:

    DDG/Fred
    Ivanovic Cuellar Fabio Hangeland Barnett
    Lamps Siggy Noble Ireland Yaya
    Torres Rooney Pog
    With 1.5 to upgrade Pog

    So,
    A) Ridgewell, McClean, Tevez
    Versus
    B) Ivan(Cole), Yaya, Pog +1.5m

My biggest issue at the moment is which GK combo to go for. The max I want to spend is 9.5m, and I'm starting to think that Schwarzer is a good option - nailed on, good fixtures and playing for a decent team. I'd actually be happy to play him for all of the first 12 GWs except for GW2, GW6 & GW11, for which Begovic has 3 home games (2 of which are very good), and Stoke are usually fairly solid at home.

I guess I'm starting to think it's worth paying the extra 0.5m to get premiership experience with 2 mid-table teams, rather than going uber cheap with 2 newbies (and likely relegation candidates) to the premier league.

    Thoughts?

Can't afford Schwarzer & Migs (10.0m), plus I already have Cuellar as SUN coverage.

        Schwarzer, Begovic
        Ivanovic, Zabaleta, Cuellar, Clyne, Gunter
        Bale, Mata, Dyer, Noble, Maloney
        Aguero, Tevez, Torres

        Bank 0.5m (Aguero -> Rooney in GW2)

      Krul- 156 points

The problem is that if you do not guess right to start, you will be stuck with a floundering GK combo and forced to make a transfer or 2. Imo....start with spending a little more and then get a cheap combo later at your first WC.

To start the season, having a poor GK combo really hurt me last season

I got 53 points from my GK in GW 1-19 last season (Floundered with Given/Ruddy/Westwood)

When i finally figured it out from GW - 20 - 38 i scored 86 in the second half.

IMO....that 33 extra points really made a difference. Spending an extra 0.5-1.0 is worth it.

If you must stay in that budget i reckon Schwartzer/Green is a good punt

      Hi Jinswick

At the moment I've got Mignolet and Jaask. 9.5m, decent rotation, experienced keepers. Sunderland are fairly strong at home and West Ham have made some canny signings recently that should bolster their defensive areas.
Schwarz and Bego are a pretty good pair for the same price but come with caveats - Fulham got more cleanies away last year and Bego may be rotated with Sorensen.
Mign and a nailed-on ( how I hate that expression ) Bego would be favourite for the price but they don't rotate at all, unfortunately.

        Hi Billy,

Migs & Jaask could work well I guess - I assume you've not got Cuellar also? I'm not overly convinced about WHU's defence, that'd be my only concern. I think FUL & STO will get a fair few more cleanies, but the risk with them is whether Begovic starts every game. Tricky one!

    Guys,

am in a pickle, and need your help to rate my team

    Federici
    Walker, A Cole, Harte
    Nani, Hazard, Noble, Y Toure
    Tevez, Torres (c), Pog

Subs: Krul, Pienaar, Clark (AV), Demel (WH)

    2.0 in the bank

There’s been some thought going into this. Chose Tevez instead of Aguero because firstly, seeing how Tevez is playing gives some encouragement that he’ll start. Second, it frees me up to get walker (lescott maybe?) and pienaar instead of my previous two of williams (swa) and allen (liv). I’m planning to use the 2.0 in the bank to get Rooney for Torres from GW2 onwards. The fact that there’s no Chelsea/Reading players in GW3 allows me to replace hazard with pienaar and cuellar with a cole.

    Thoughts?
