Technical Area

The Technical Area – Assessing City’s 3-4-1-2

This evening we bring back our series of “Technical Area” articles which offer tactical insight on a match or team each Gameweek. While the Guardian chalkboards are no more, this season we have built our own maps and charts to feed these articles and to provide a preview of the kind of tools and content available to our members…

Having obtained Opta data from Sunday’s Community Shield match between City and Chelsea, we were all set to analyse each side’s respective systems in terms of Fantasy potential but the dismissal of Branislav Ivanovic weights the head-to-head team comparison too much in Man City’s favour. As a result, we’ve decided to take a look at the league champions’ new 3-4-1-2 formation, as utilised by Roberto Mancini is several pre-season games prior to yesterday’s match – in particular, we focus on the midfield area.

Milner and Kolarov
Looking at City’s average position (below left, top), the system played out more like a 3-2-3-2 yesterday. With Vincent Kompany (4) stationed deep and central, the wide-positioned centre-halves afforded City plenty width at the back, which allowed James Milner (7) and Aleksandar Kolarov (13) to push far forward on the flanks – when in possession, the duo were almost as far up the field as Samir Nasri (19). Indeed, the pair received more passes in the final third of the pitch than any other City players; Milner’s 22 and Kolarov’s 20 were superior to frontmen Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero, with 17 and 14 respectively.

Man City Average Positions

Mancini’s system demands the pair supply plenty of balls from out wide and both delivered time and again; Milner registered 11 crosses and Kolarov 10 but the former’s distribution in the final third was relatively poor. The former Villa man has a lowly 71.4% pass success rate in this area – compare that to Kolarov’s 86.7% or Nasri’s 89.5% and it’s clear that, despite creating four goalscoring opportunities for his team mates (more than any player in yesterday’s match) there was plenty room for improvement in Milner’s contribution.

From a Fantasy perspective, these positions will clearly be crucial to City in the season ahead if Mancini decides to operate with such a system. What also looks essential in order for this formation to flourish is a high work-rate in these key areas. Both players made three tackles each – a tally bettered only by Pablo Zabaleta – while the pair also demonstrated strong aerial ability; Kolarov won four duels in the air, more than any other player yesterday, while Milner was next best with two, alongside Vincent Kompany and Nigel De Jong.

It seems unlikely that Nasri or David Silva will be suited to the wide roles in such a system, then, meaning the pair would likely battle it out for the role in “the hole” behind the front two whenever Mancini rolls out this tactic. With the City boss also playing the likes of Zabaleta and Gael Clichy in the back-three, the versatility of the City full-backs could well prosper from a Fantasy perspective within such a line-up.

Despite Mancini’s post-match uncertainty over the tactics, there’s no doubt the new formation has been a definite hit so far for the Etihad club, with Wigan’s successful implementation of a three-man defence in the second half of last season highlighting its capabilities within the Premier League, if utilised intelligently.

Man City Average Positions

A quick glimpse at City’s shape in their previous encounter against Chelsea (left) highlights the difference. Silva (21) and Nasri (19) were the wide men that day but both have a tendency to cut inside when on the ball and, for all their intricate possession, Mancini’s men lacked any real width further up the field – a criticism that was levelled at the champions on a number of occasions last term. It’s perhaps debatable as to whether this will be their default tactic but it clearly offers City a very strong Plan B, going on yesterday’s performance and result.

Toure and Nasri
As David Silva continued to build up his fitness with a brief cameo yesterday, Yaya Toure and Nasri took the opportunity to grab our Fantasy attention with a goal apiece in the 3-2 win. As the average position map (top, left) highlights, Toure (42) was relatively deep, playing just ahead of Nigel De Jong (34) but he was the beating heart of the City side, making an incredible 100 passes – a statistic that will no doubt catch the eye of Fantasy managers playing the Sky Sports game, bearing in mind the new bonus point system. For all his possession, though, Toure rarely ventured into the final third with any real intent – he made just 10 successful passes in the final third and scored with his only effort, firing home from outside the box after a poor John Terry clearance.

Nasri, however, demonstrated the danger he could carry when playing in “the hole” in this new system. The Frenchman made 17 passes inside Chelsea’s defensive third – the most executed by any City player, with only two of his passes going astray in this vital area. The former Arsenal man also managed two shots on target inside the box; once again, this stat was higher than any of his team mates and, with a goal and assist for his endeavours, he scored 15.3 in our ICT Index, the top mark for Mancini’s side in yesterday’s 3-2 triumph.

Having looked at the midfield, our next step is to analyse the respective displays of Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero within the system in a separate “Versus” article exclusively for Members. With a price difference of 9.0 to 11.5 in FPL, the question of who to plump for is a hot topic on the site right now ahead of Saturday’s rapidly approaching deadline, with Tevez’s goal already boosting his ownership considerably over the past 24 hours.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Uncertainty about where Cazorla will play, and if he's a good 9m bet for assist and goals, got me swapping him, Allen and Coloccini for Michu, Pienaar and Lescott.

I think I finally decided on a strategy:

    DDG/Feder
    Lescott/Cuellar/McCarthy/Clyne/Tierney
    Bale/Santi Cazorla/Allen/Robson-Kanu/Marveaux
    Aguero/Rooney/Torres

if Torres backfires, then sell him for Petric and upgrade one Clyne and one of the midfield fillers.

    Yay or Nay?

Kagawa scored 55 goals in 125 games for Cerezo Osaka, 21 in 49 for Dortmund and 11 in 33 for Japan. I reckon he'll play.

I still can't see past guthrie as my 5th midfielder. He is the most nailed on of the 4.5m options, certainly has goals in him, and will probably take some of the set pieces (maybe 2nd choice). I was very sorry to see him leave. He did a great job for us last year, filling in for cabeye and tiote. The DGW is just a bonus. I'm surprised he doesn't get more love on here. Can anyone produce a better case for any of the other 4.5m options?

I like him and I'm keeping, although I was roundly castigated a week ago for having him. Whenever I saw him last year I thought he played well, comfortable on the ball and some decent passing. Of course if Frei or Kacanklic are regular starters I'd prefer them but Guthrie's definitely value at 4.5m.

That's what I mean, I have seen people getting slagged for having guthrie and just don't get it. Kacanklic and Marveaux might be better short term options, but you don't really want to be wasting a transfer on your 5th mid, so guthrie could be a season keeper for me.

I agree with you and don't think there are any and better or more viable options at 4.5m. He's better value than most 5m I'd think too.

If I had any concern it would simply be that he hasn't had much time in the RDG team (as far as I know - could be wrong).

He signed at the start of the summer, so has been involved with them since the start of pre-season. I doubt reading offered him more money than us, so the only reason he would go to them is if he was all but guaranteed first team footy. so he should be nailed on.

Well he is 0.5m cheaper. And will spend 95% on time on the bench, so no point wasting the extra 0.5m. Also, with west hams new signings, there are a few on here who suggest that noble will no longer be nailed on. Guthrie should be nailed on

Having trouble selecting my cheapies - best option of these 2?

    (A)
    MIGNOLET, FEDERICI
    Zabaleta, Ivanovic, HUGHES, Demel, CLYNE

    (B)
    SCHWARZER, BEGOVIC
    Zabaleta, Ivanovic, CUELLAR, Demel, GUNTER

Since I also have Guthrie, Lamps & Torres in each of the above, option B means I'll HAVE to trade out 2 DGW players to have 11 outfield players in GW3, whereas in option A I'll only HAVE to trade out 1 of the DGW players to have 11 in GW3, even though I'll still have the same no of DGWers in GW1.

    What do we think?

Would you rotate Mignolet and Fed? Or just play Fed the weeks sunderland go to one of the big boys away? If you want to rotate, I would suggest paying the 0.5m extra and going for Mignolet/Schwarzer.

Also, I wouldn't be afraid to double up on the sunderland defense. They should be great value under O'Neill

I currently have the exact same defenders as (B)

        Hey China,

I think I'd always play Migs except for when SUN have a tough game. If it weren't for GW3 I'd definitely go with B - but being forced to ditch 2 CHE players and then still having no outfield subs in GW3 is a potential deal breaker. I guess that's the advantage of having Fed. I suppose another option is to go B, but get switch Gunter -> McCartney?

I dunno - he gets a lot of bad press for 'sitting deep', but he's pretty much nailed on to start (until Oscar finds his feet), is on pens, and he WILL get in the box and get chances. He's not capable of just sitting back imo. His pre-season form has been decent also.

Please help giving your opinion on this Gk selection issue.

Popular pairs seem to be DDG/Fed (10.5m) and Friedel/Fed (10.0m). Both look good and rotate well, but I'd like to try squeezing budget at the back to improve the outfield players.

    A: 9.0m ... Jaas./Ruddy -> West Ham have good fixtures & Norwich give perfect rotation until Gw7.
B: 9.5m ... Friedel/4.0m -> Good fixture for Spurs. Just two games with Big teams in first 10 weeks.

What do you think? Is B more likely to gain points and safe?

i've based that on my belief that qpr and sunderland will be solid at the back this year. if theres a new swansea (i doubt there will be this year) i'll jump on that. i'd rather have a keeper from a defense that i trust with a 50/50 fixture than a team with a dodgy defence and a good fixture (could be my undoing)

Branislav Ivanovic will not be suspended for the beginning of our Barclays Premier League campaign, despite his red card in the Community Shield on Sunday. The FA disciplinary department does not class the game as a competitive first team fixture, and so the Serbian will be free to play at Wigan next weekend.

Thoughts on a Schwarzer/Mignolet GK rotation? 0.5 cheaper than current GK rotation - DDG/Federici

Would it be too much to double up on Ful/Sun defenders in Hangeland and Cuellar, given theGK Ful/Sun rotation? Too many eggs in...well, two baskets?

Two different strategies. I think that Mignolet/ Schwarzer is the best rotation. With DDG you would pick him for every game, and fed would only fill in on games he is rested. No way to plan for that.

I would have no problem doubling up on sunderland defenders. Not too sure about fulham though

        Appreciate your thoughts, China Mag

Think I will settle on a Schwarzer/Mignolet rotation. The rotating fixture looks quite favourable

In that case, might revisit the selections of Cuellar and Hangeland. Perhaps Hangeland could be moved on for attacking full-back from Swansea or your boys, Newcastle - in the form of Santon or Rangel

Guys, please do comment on my team...

    Federici--(Friedel)
    Cole A--Lescott--Hughes--(Rafael--McCartney)
    Bale--Kagawa--Yaya Toure--Guthrie--(Bannan)
    Aguero--Torres--Petric

Rafael may not play in GW1, but definately will be the RB from GW2, with vidic and ferdi, will get clean sheet for sure. I think Villa has good fixtures, where Bannan can be handy with set pieces. McCartney is just a random picks for 4m. Scoring ability as per the fixtures is very high for this combo... what do you think??

Have had him earmarked for a spot in my FPL side - given his likely advanced midfield role

An ankle knock in pre-season match against Colchester has had missing the last few games. Hammers have cleared him of anything serious, although it was initially reported as a broken ankle? Not sure if there's been any progress, or if he's likely to front for the first GW

Assuming he plays in an advanced midfield role, and given the Hammers' summer signings, I presume central midfield for West Ham (with all players available) will consist of Diame and Diarra as the anchors and Nolan in the advanced central MF role
