Moneyball – Ricardo Vaz Te

In a new series of articles for members, we explore those unfashionable, unwanted and unexciting players who don’t necessarily come with You Tube clips or Armani ads but deliver that all important quantity which drives the “Moneyball” strategy: comparative value.

The term “Moneyball” found its way across the Atlantic for many with the arrival of John Henry, whose Fenway Sports Group added Liverpool to their holdings list alongside Henry’s great pride: the Boston Red Sox. Henry’s Red Sox failed in a bid to hire Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland A’s and chief proponent of the so-called Moneyball strategy but, using Beane’s approach to player acquisitions, went on to deliver their first championship in 86 years. Henry’s attempts to replicate his success on Mersyeside by applying certain principles to player analysis under Damien Comolli failed to have the desired effect, however.

Despite popular opinion, the lessons of Moneyball do not start and end with saving money or looking for one particular attribute in players, but rather looking for players discarded by the wider market, either because they succeed in an uncommon way or because they do so in a particularly unfashionable manner.

Given that most Fantasy managers spend a large portion of our money on just a handful of players, we, too, are forced to invest for value at the bottom end of our squad and in that arena we have to accept imperfection if we’re going to achieve success. Finding the right assets to fill the budget gaps in our squads can prove vital; the Moneyball series is here to help – to investigate the lower end market and attempt to find diamonds in the rough.

Using the Moneyball concept and the data available to our Members, we’ll attempt to identify and analyse players who perhaps appear “imperfect” solutions but, in fact, offer strong potential for those with limited funds.

    I don't necessarily mind Guthrie and Maloney as I think they are decent players, but I'm not a huge fan of their fixtures and I will need to play one of them for the foreseeable future if I get them. Should I just deal with that, or look for other players? I have .9 to play with...

    I wonder how many of us can truly understand the "moneyball" concept and the sabermetric principles which govern it. It's ridiculously complicated and although Billy Beane is the famous proponent he was schooled on it by some harvard educated mathmetician whose name escapes me (Jonah Hill played him in the movie). On a side note, I don't think the film gave enough credit to Beane's predecessor Sandy Alderson but that's a story for another time.

    Quite a few posters reacted well to this article, and rightfully so, yet the vast majority of managers, including a significant portion of FFS ones, will continue to just look at the player who scores the most points this weekend and say "ERMAHGERD PLAYER X IS ESSENTIAL NOW!" and kneejerk them in. 😳 Just saying.

      Totally agree on all your points mate. I know baseball fans would cringe at me giving all the credit to Beane as he was (a) not the first GM to see the value in stats and (b) not even the 'stats' guy (his real name was Paul DePodesta who went on to be a GM himself but they changed his name in the movie as he didn't sign a release). I think Beane's true strength, and its something that really applies here, is that not only did he embrace stats, he followed them even when popular opinion said otherwise. All too often we will see player X with great shot numbers, locked in minutes etc but talk ourselves out of it because we saw him play 2 years ago and he was crap, or doesn't really look like he should be good. That, for me, is Beane's genius.

      BTW Anyone who enjoyed moneyball, particularly the book, should check out The Extra 2% by Jonah Keri which focuses on the Tampa Bay Rays, another team whose management use advanced techniques and analysis to give them an edge to compete with much richer teams. It's a bit more baseball heavy than moneyball but well worth the effort for anyone who enjoys understanding how front offices think.

        Cheers Chris. You're right of course, you can't argue with Beane's gutsy endorsement of the system even though it may not have been his brainchild in particular.

        Enjoyed the article immensely anyhow, and in relation to FPL I just wish more people on here could genuinely appreciate the intracicies of the decision making process instead of just blindly following where the points go. I fear if Vaz Te doesn't deliver some will write you off as a kook but I appreciated the statistical approach anyhow.

    What would you do here with 1 FT? Save it?

    de Gea (McCarthy)
    Assou Ekotto Clark Cuellar (Saylor, Demel)
    Kagawa McClean Bale Michu (HBA)
    Graham Ba Tevez(c)?

    I'm really in a spot of bother, thinking maybe save transfer or bring in a better captain choice but who for who? Or maybe just Saylor > Baines? Or save for 2 free next week?

    To wildcard or not to wildcard, that is the question..

    GK: De Gea (Federici)
    DEF: Zabaleta Hangeland Cuellar (Saylor) (Clyne)
    MID: Hazard Michu Yaya Toure Pienaar (Kaca)
    FOR: Tevez RVP Graham

    £1.4m in the bank. Also, who should I play for this GW? Graham at away to Villa or Kaca at home to WBA?

    If any of you that saved your wildcard are looking to feel better, I suppose I can help. I switched out 10 of my players, and I'm happy with my team, but I think I should have waited as I already had RVP, Tevez, and Michu (and could have gotten Hazard with my FT.) The biggest thing is that I didn't end up adding much value to my team. I can't say I'm disappointed and I really like my team now, but I would have been fine saving it for later I think. I'll have a better idea of whether it was the right decision in 3-4 weeks...

    Are any of the following transfers worth a 4pt hit?

    Beausejour -> HBA
    Defoe -> Jelavic
    Bale -> Cazorla

      Look at my post just above yours. I think it's risky to invest in Cazorla for now

    To wildcard or not to wildcard, that is the question..

    GK: De Gea (Federici)
    DEF: Zabaleta Hangeland Cuellar (Saylor) (Clyne)
    MID: Hazard Michu Yaya Toure Pienaar (Kaca)
    FOR: Tevez RVP Graham

    £1.4m in the bank. Also, who should I play for this GW? Graham at away to Villa or Kaca at home to WBA

    Thanks in advance 🙂

      What's the point of using WC? You have the "essentials" for now, RVP Hazard Michu Tevex , and a good supporting case in Yaya Piennar Saylor Cuellar.
      I wouldn't

      I would go for Fletcher out of those two, he is a pure goalscorer and on form. We don't know how match if Berbs will be yet, etc.

    Wildcard team, please give opinions, I’ve gone for a balanced team that shouldn’t need many drastic changes over the next 6 weeks.

    Jussi bego

    Baines S.taylor ridgewell cuellar figueroa

    Hazard yaya michu benarfa guthrie

    Tevez rvp lambert

      Richardson, Frei, Dejagah, Senderos out. So, Kaca will probably start.
